Tonight's lineup: Panthers at Caps

Jose Theodore will be back between the pipes tonight against the Panthers, but the Caps will be without Mike Green and Jeff Schultz. Both defensemen were injured last night in the Caps' 4-1 win at Florida and are listed as day to day.

Scott Clemmensen, meantime, will start for the Panthers.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said he does not believe the injuries to Green (upper body) and Schultz (lower body) are serious.

"Both of them, they are not serious injuries, but it's enough to keep them out of tonight's game," Boudreau said. Asked if he expects either to play Wednesday, Boudreau said, "Who knows. They'll both skate [Monday] and we will reevaluate at that time."

Boudreau added that Alex Ovechkin's status has not changed. Ovechkin will miss his third straight game tonight with a strain near his left shoulder.

"Alex wants to push it but [if] he trips on someone's bad ice and goes into the corner, we're sort of hurting ourselves at that point," Boudreau said. "We'll see how it is Monday and Tuesday and see if it's getting better."

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Fleischmann-Backstrom-Semin
Laich-Morrison-Knuble
Laing-Steckel-Bradley
Fehr-Perreault-Clark

Defense
Morrisonn-Poti
Erskine-Pothier
Sloan-Jurcina

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

I'll have more after the game.

I need to organize these thoughts better, but, screw it...

-is fehr, remotely, ready to play in this game, i feel like we rushed him back from the IR in the first place and he is already hurt again...he can be a player and i feel like we're ruining him for the year by activating him too soon...

-those d-pairings cant be right...morrison and pothier should be together, and keep poti and juice together...play 2 d-pai except when you can sneak erskine/sloan out there against 4th liners or slow skaters...(looks like boudreau might have some "coaching" to do tonight)

-that semin, back, fleischman disappears to much during games, i mean, they are probably still good for a goal per game, but there is just no intensity there

-knuble and laich have really upped their game since OV went out, and the beneficiary is BMO who has been playing very well (last nights goals, beautiful assist from laich and hard work by knuble to clear the puck for the empty-netter)

-i want to win this game...we are better than florida playing with 10 guys...big night for the goalie whoever that might be...

I am the only one who feel Varly should be starting? Despite Jose's performance last night, these are the ideal situations for Varlamov to be playing. Is he not viewed as the likely starter for next season?

Posted by: thomas20 | November 7, 2009 5:50 PM | Report abuse

I like Theo in the game tonight. He has been better than Varly. We are short handed,hurt,and its a four point game.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 7, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

@thomas
no way theo comes back, but this could be a damaging game for a young goalie cause the defense isnt there and he could get lit up...

OR
yknow, he could face down 40 shots and be amazing and cement himself into our future plans...

in any case, we're going to need some hot goalie work tonight

Posted by: cotelloer | November 7, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

@ thomas20

well I do think Varly needs to play more often but it's still early in the season and I'm sure he'll get his share of playing time before the playoffs start.

they do need to find out if Varly can be their number one goalie next season sometime this season.

Posted by: joek443 | November 7, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

also this is Theo's make or break year for his next contract... I'm not surprised that he's been playing well

Posted by: joek443 | November 7, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Just finished watching last night's game because I went out and didn't get a chance to watch it till now.

Excellent performance by everyone. Perreault has impressed me even more. Obviously Boudreau feels the same way as he progressively gave him more and more playing time, on different lines especially after Green went down and Sloan had to move to D.

Not gonna get to see tonight's game live either as I'm going out again (Wolfmother concert), but will watch it either later tonight or tomorrow and once again will be interesting to see how #85 does. He's been excellent regardless of his line-mates. Sometimes players going down with injuries result in discovering someone who can really help. Loving this kid so far.

BTW, on the Panthers side was very impressed with their young D Kulikov. Like I've said before other teams were idiots for letting him drop to #14 in last year's draft just because he's Russian. Kid should've went in top 4 without a doubt.

Posted by: ranndino | November 7, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

@cotelloer - Many people here have assumed that Theo will not be back and that the team will go with two young, small cap hit goalies. I'm not so sure about that. Varly has been inconsistent and Neuvirth has gotten off to a bit of an uneven start in Hershey. It wouldn't shock me if they offered Theo a short extension or brought in another veteran goalie.

@zmega

no way we resign theo, it's not that i dislike him
it's just that going into a season with varly and neuvie makes too much sense, cause our offense will still be there ven if they flounder...and there is never any shortage of available free agent, vet goalies hanging out around the trade deadline (worst-case)...and also, varly'll be fine

We've been outplayed in this period and I am so frustrated. Panthers have been much more aggressive (23 SOG vs. our 15). We look clumsy and uncoordinated. What is going on? And Semin must be in a very down period. Neither he nor Backs have done anything in the post Ovi era.

Posted by: caraveli | November 7, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

the panthers have a lot of injuries as well so can't use that as an excuse

BB is pissed, but that's normal these days, even with our position in the standings.

This team continues to be an enigma. With or without its stars.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 7, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Sloan has been asked to do a lot and has been great recently but did anybody else notice he was in front of the net on all 3 Florida goals tonight?

The first one was a bad rebound by Theodore but Sloan had to take Frolik's body or his stick.

On the second goal, Sloan helped screen Theodore. He should've either driven the Panther out of the crease or given Theo a view of the shot.

I don't think he was responsible in any way for the 3rd goal but he was right there in the crease. I haven't seen the review yet but again, I don't think he had any part in that one. I could be wrong.

I hate to criticize the guy but he's been up and down since going back on defense. Some great plays. Some very poor plays. It's hard to make a quick switch from forward to defense so he deserves some slack for sure but he needs to sharpen up. He's also made a few pretty bad passes, at least a couple of which led to giveaways.

of course, i'm not watching the game, but did boudreau bench semin for his two minors? I have not seen his name on the score sheet for the line he's supposed to be on (with backstrom and fleischmann). Someone above said that he was on the ice for a couple goals against, but that's not on the score sheet either...

I really hope boudreau has finally taken that step. Unfortunately, it's necessary. And he hasn't scored too many points lately. It would really wake him up not to have ice time or the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his 2/3 minors per game habit

Sinking Caps

Both your name, and your continued bashing of Schultz, shows that your loyalties are not towards the Caps. I would be very interested in what, if any, team you really do support. The Schultz of 2009/10 is a far better player than the Schultz of 2008/09. I have seen many instances where Sarge has played very well and made very good plays. Conversely, I have seen very few instances this year of Sarge playing very poorly.

I'm with Joe443--sinkingcaps is a joke. I read this board constantly and I've commented a lot on the doom and gloom of some posters but I never doubted their passion or devotion to all things Caps. But sinking caps lost ot for me when he wished injury on our players. I don't care how long he thinks he's been a fan--he went too far for me. He says it all with the name "sinkingcaps". No faith, no hope, bad fan. I'm whacking you with a newspaper now: no, no, bad fan, very bad fan.

LOL FloridaCapsFan

you hear some crazy stuff on these blogs - it's not unusual to hear a few people hoping and cheering for wrecks on nascar boards. I would never hope for stuff like that but you can somewhat understand it if they hope for those things so their guy can win... it's sad and pathetic nontheless

but till this morning I never heard a "fan" of a team actually hoping for two of the players (Green & Schultz) on the team to have season-ending injuries because he thinks the team can have more success without them. not only does that make him a terrible fan, it also makes him a terrible human being (SinkingCaps).

Just got back from the game and thought I would hear from the masses prior to heading out for some libations.

Overall, we looked good and played a solid O and D game but in reality, the Panthers were flat for the second half and we kept up the intensity.

Glad we are winning the games that we should but needless to say, better teams will be the real test of our level.

Get lost doom and gloomer. You're absolutely a movie of the week. Get off this board. You have nothing constructive to say.

NOW POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A great job by the team to step it up ina big third period and turning it on. THey did it without some top guns and that was encouraging.

I didn't see much of the game from the mid-2nd period on - DAMN I missed some offense haha. Oh well.

@joek443

Unfortunately, a lot of the fans here have only followed hockey for a short time.

Poor Jurcina deserves better than the -4 that Sloan saddled him with. I never want to see that pairing again. Is Alzner's time coming?

Posted by: thomas20 | November 7, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

True BernieWolfeFan, but the Caps needed both wins and needed them to be strong wins. The team is finding its Ovie-less way. Moreover, it was our intensity that kept them flat. We kept up the energy and maintained the momentum. It's what I like so much about hockey, how swiftly the momentum can change. And tonight the Caps didn't let up. Yeah I'm proud of this win. It's a confidence builder.

that 2nd line and flash really pulled their weight tonigh. The panther's may not be the best team but battling from behind and then opening for 5 goals in the 3rd defines this teams offense. with or without ovetchkin the team is skilled and brucie's system produces this kind of hockey

4 goals against though...that could use some work. good win for the boys

@arcassell: I'm a new fan compared to many of you here but I'm not a "pee-on-your-shoes" kind of fan. What do people think of Perreault--thought he was great. I love that first NHL goal moment.

Posted by: newbiecapsfan07 | November 7, 2009 10:51 PM | Report abuse

This was the best that I have seen Pothier play. I still have concerns about his size/strength to handle the physical side of his job, but give the man his due for a job well done the past two nights.
Flash - what can you say? If he keeps this up, it's great for the team and he stands to get a nice raise.
Perreault - he's given the team some energy, hasn't he?
Sloan - a bit shakey tonight, but the moving him from d to wing to d probably contributed to that. Overall, he's shown he can be a valuable utility man.
I'm disappointed that Semin and Backstrom have not stepped up better in Ovi's absence.

Sinking Caps -- your name says it all -- you're not a fan ... you're a negative, pathetic dweeb who apparently knows nothing about the game of hockey.
First of all Sloan was not on for 4 goals against -- it was 3. And he WAS on for the first goal Fleischman scored. In case you haven't noticed, this is a team game & everyone makes mistakes at some point in the game, including the goalie. You have been ridiculously critical of several players, besides Sloan, (i.e. Pothier, Schultz & Clark to name a few) but have nothing to say when they have a great game. Shame on you. This was only Sloan's 3rd full game on 'D' this season. Last night on D for 2 periods he played solid & even saved Theo on a goal that would have gone in. Not one player ever has a perfect game, including Ovi & Green and if they struggle a little ... so what. I suppose you're Mr. Perfect in your life & career, always at 100% effectiveness & efficiency. Get off your high horse & get a life. And quit posting such ridiculous malicious diatribes that make you look like a fool.

Thomas 20 -- If Sloan "saddled" Jurcina with the -4 ... why is Sloan a -2? Could be the other way around.

Someone asked where Davethecapsfan has been---haven't heard his Caps Insider voice for a while. Also kittypawz and mszilla seem to be missing in action. Hmmm......a threesome?

Caps looked like they were having FUN in the third period tonight. I felt bad for Semin, though, he was very frustrated. BB said that maybe he is missing Ovie because he has no one to talk with on the bench with Ovie gone but also said it's hard to get into Semin's head.

So glad the Caps won back to back against Florida, and I hope they can keep their energy up and beat the Islanders on Wednesday. It's going to be a tougher game.

1) I’m surprised they didn’t start Varlamov in goal — Theo looked tired. (There’s a reason they don’t usually use the same goalied in back to backs.) But at least things worked out for the Caps.

2) The person sitting in front of me had the feeling (after Period 1 that we would win. (“Feel it in my bones”). He also has the feeling that Ovi will be back on Wednesday.

3) I do have a bittersweet feeling. If Ovi’s back, Semin will be a healthy scratch on Wednesday. There’s no room on either the 2nd line or the 3rd line for him. He’s the logical person to scratch. (I feel sad since I like Semin.) My husband thinks they’ll still find a place for him.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 7, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Lines for Wednesday when Ovi's back. (The guy in front of me can feel in his bones that Ovi's going to be back.)

1st Line: Ovi/Backstrom/Fleischmann

2nd Line: Laich/Morrison/Knuble

3rd Line: Fehr/Perrault/Clark

4th Line: Laing/Steckel/Bradley

I assume Boyd G will remain on injured reserve and transferred to LTIR, if he hasn't been already. If Nyls is truly gone, the Caps can keep Perrault.

Semin will be a healthy scratch. Sad that he once led our team in goals this year. He did well against the Flyers and hasn't been the same since. (I know that he was cross checked in the last Islander game. He said he was okay but I wonder.......)

The 7-4 win was fun to watch as it was a stat padding game for the "B" guys. Northern Lights shine in win. Last time I got to say that was a loss. Knuble not only had 2 goals and 2 assists but got his two goals on 2 shots. Though I have to admit a bit of disappointment that Semin doesn't step up with Oveckin out. He seems a bit fragile. Fragile physically, fragile psyche. I just don't know if he wants it enough. The coverage mentioned how he relies on Ove as a person to talk to during the games. But as a comparison Malkin stepped it up with Crosby out and is now the better player. Malkin is tough. I'd like to see a little more grit from Semin. He'll take a big hit and come up gimpy though often enough to make you wonder if the damage is to his psyche. But he reminds me of Gretzky, except Gretzky was indelibly happy. Where Semin has an isolated immigrant, Dostoevsky feel. You wonder if his retirement (win or lose) will include a Siberian cabin with plenty of russian vodka. But the Pens are another story. Any time Sid the Kid leaves the ice it's a time out while I'm pondering the merits of spanking in school. Spare the rod spoil the child.

The team as a whole (though it also coincides with the current injuries) won back to back games of 40+ shots allowed. Then followed with 5 games right at 30 shots allowed. The results were 3 losses followed by 2 wins. While in the losses they allowed low 30s, the wins high 20s (with less offensive weapons). It seems a shift and they've adjusted. I hope they remain the top offensive team in the league while maintaining a playoff style defensive intensity. Though even their "B" guys showed their offensive flair. Down 3-2, pop,pop 2 quick goals. Panthers tie it up late and 3 more goals. Making the Nylander waiver seem well timed. As Perreault scored his first goal on a veteran move of passing to himself off the back of the net to spin the defender and get his first NHL goal? Sweet.

Guess Semin's not a healthy scratch on Wednesday after all. According to one of the fans who just posted on Japers', Ovi had an interview with Dimitry Chesnakov and said the doctor says that he shouldn't for another week.

In other words, another week out. That means 3 more games -- at least. If he can't skate for another week, it would take still another week for him to get in game shape.

I'd say, time to put Ovi (and Boyd Gordon, while they're at it) on LTIR. Then they can bring up whoever they like from Hershey. Alzner can come up.

@Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I agree Poor Juice, with -4. I couldn't understand why they paired him and Sloan. Usually, Juice is with Poti.

@thomas20

I think Alzner will be up before the end of the month -- as soon as they put Boyd Gordon and Alex Ovechkin on LTIR. Yes, Ovi will probably be put on LTIR. The latest is that he was told not to skate for a week.

@zmega

Boudreau actually hinted that there are more injuries than the ones currently publicized. Wonder if Backstrom is hurt (or still ill). Also heard that Semin had taken a cross check to the back vs the Islanders last week and was in pain. He said he was okay but ....... Note: he has not been the same player since.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 7, 2009 11:42 PM | Report abuse

I think Semin is trying too hard-he's tight. When he's comfortable and in his zone he has such a fluidity to his stick handling.

@newbiecapsfan07

Agreed. From where I'm sitting, he seems to be trying and my husband thinks he's trying but every blogger and poster in town says he's worthless. Unproductive and taking penalties.

it seems to me that when a player on the caps is listed as day-to-day or week-to-week - the caps won't do LTIR unless they are within 2 games or a week of the player completing an LTIR stint.

doesn't help semin that a lot of so-called fans have turned against him. buttheads in the 400's that usually boo greenie were booing sasha tonight. some people are only happy when they can see someone else in pain. there's a german word for that-- can't remember what it is. but whatever you want to call people who go to home games to boo their own players, you can never call them fans, that's for sure. there are some words i would like to call them, but then i'll get banned again. :)

CapsFan75:
good thing i'm not in town - so you don't mean me
semin not being on the scoresheet is just more noticeable because everyone expects him to pick up ovi scoring - kind of unfair if you ask me. he's never really been a take over kind of guy - but when he gets in a zone he can be as good as ovi. he'll just never have the consistency that ovi has. i think it may end up being a good thing that the other 21 skaters on the team can't stand around waiting for ovi and semin score. tonights effort is a real good start - it's scary to think if everyone keeps giving this effort and then ovi comes back and semin gets in a zone

Got home about an hour ago. It was great to see the team have an offensive explosion in the 3rd. To be honest, even though Jurcina was a -4, the only player I was disappointed with was Theodore. The 2nd goal would have never happened if he would have simply gone behind the net to stop the puck on the dump-in. Instead it went around the boards and Sloan had to awkwardly dive at it to try to keep the Panthers from getting it. The puck went to the point, and the shot hit the back of the net. If Theodore would have stopped it, it would have been an easy out.

The 4th goal was a joke too. At the time it seemed like a momentum killer, the stadium had a little life sucked out of it. Then Backstrom had the strong move to the net, and Flash buried the rebound, 5-4 and they didn't look back.

Theo was horrible with his rebound control and was directly contributed to him seeing 28 shots. Better control of his rebounds and he would have faced around 20 shots. Maybe he's just tired. I guess we were due for a letdown in net because IMO Theo and Varly had strung a few good ones together. Looks like we'll only trail the Pens by 2 points since they are getting their butts handed to them by the Sharks.

spinner-33: I heard them too. They were still yelling crap after we were up 7-4. So many targets so little time for self loathing "fans."

Posted by: fanohock1 | November 8, 2009 12:07 AM | Report abuse

I absolutely don't understand booing our own players. I agree-they aren't fans. And as for Semin bashing bloggers and posters, eh what a waste of pixels. I can see how badly Semin wants to be a game-changer and it seemed to me that he just wasn't comfortable tonight. Like he's boxed in--to play aggressively risks penalties and he can't get a break with refs so he tries to play less aggressively and the is not as effective. Tight and at times tentative. Needs to find his groove. I believe he will. He's too talented.

Posted by: newbiecapsfan07 | November 8, 2009 12:12 AM | Report abuse

Actually we're tied for first in points but the Pens have the tie-breaker because they have more wins. You'd think we were the Carolina Hurricanes when reading some of the posts in here. Instead, we have the 2nd best record in the conference.

@spinner-33 & newbiecapsfan07

Agree on Semin. From what I could see, he missed a couple of pretty good shots. He would miss the net or something.

It seems he's having trouble trying to get set up to shoot.

He seemed to be hitting people right and left.

@dccitizen1

I hope the Caps can do well against the Isles. Avenge that overtime loss. Isles are better team than last year.

The Isles were certainly chippy in their last game against us. They took shots at both Ovi and Semin, who both were in pain. Luckily, not hurt bad. Semin said he was okay afterwards (but I really wonder -- he hasn't been the same player since that game. Totally off. I wonder if he got hurt more than he's letting on. Boudreau did hint there are more injuries on the team than he's let on.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 8, 2009 12:38 AM | Report abuse

@fanohock1

I think Theodore was just tired. There's a reason most teams don't start the same goalie in back to back games. Goalies need a little time to recover. Theo did take quite a lot of shots yesterday.

I personally thought Varly should have started today, just to give Theo a rest. (That was my feeling even before the game started.)
