Tonight's lineup: Red Wings at Caps

Jose Theodore will make his third consecutive start tonight as the Caps aim to win four in a row and avenge a 3-2 loss in Detroit on October 10. The Red Wings, meantime, will turn to veteran Chris Osgood, who will be making his first start in 13 games.

Also, Karl Alzner will suit up while Brian Pothier and John Erskine will sit out again. The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Sloan-Poti
Morrisonn-Alzner

Goalies
Theodore
Neuvirth

and im in seattle watching the clock waiting for the quitting bell so i can go watch it TiVo-ed on directv center ice...

but usually while im stuck here at work wait for that bell, there is a lot more banter and people making comments on the game so i have to shut it down so i dont spoil the game for myself...

but today its scary quiet...everyone is either at the game or has their game faces on and are concentrating really hard on the game...

Wow this is Jose Theodore vs. the Red Wings. Where is the rest of the team?

Posted by: rachel216 | January 19, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

I feel like this is a great period because it's tied at zero!! Thanks Jose! Hopefully they have a much better second. We should be thankful it's still scoreless.

And right now Theo is making a lot of people eat crow, including me. He's on top of his game.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 19, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

looked like they started to settle in a bit near the end of the period.

Posted by: elicea | January 19, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Question: Do you pronounce Chimera with a hard "Ch" or with an "S" (Shimera)?

I always thought you just pronounced it as it looked (Chi-mer-a), but Kolbe keeps saying (Shi-mer-a).

I'm not in DC and can't verify with Joe B. Is Kolbe right or wrong?

Any ammo to get Kolbe fired is good for me.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | January 19, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

I'm hoping that was the Wings' best shot.

Posted by: zmega | January 19, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

That was a weird period. I am used to seeing the Caps dominate, but I haven't seem them get dominated quite like that in a way.

a) Detroit's PK is very aggressive; it looked awesome in that period (the 2 minutes it was on)

b) Theo looks great. Could be 2 or 3 - 0, but he's helping them stay in. Hopefully they respond in the second.

c) Looked like a couple missed calls in that period. One on Green, one on Semin. But whatever, no excuses, the Caps got completely dominated. Let's hope they get it together in the second.

Posted by: Aldred15 | January 19, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

It had a playoff feel because of the way Detroit put on a puck possession clinic.

They just flexed their SC-experienced muscles.

Watch how Detroit's d-men win pucks in their own end and make good quick decisions with the puck. I don't care about their GAA, those guys know how to play in their own end.

Needless to say, we're extremely lucky we're not down a couple of goals.

6 scoring chances to 1.

As a person who is also a Detroit fan I am rooting for OT but what is going on in the game? I watch almost every Wings game, unless they are playing at the same time as the Caps, and I can't remember the last time Detroit dominated a game like this... maybe thae first game against the Jackets where they put up 9 but even then they didn't seem to be dominating as much. I am not sure if it is the Wings being frusterated from this weekend or if the Caps really are struggling that much.

Looked to me like he was pushed by whoever the Caps D-man was. He may have gone in a little easy on the push but he was pushed. At most I would have called a no goal if it had gone in but Theo stood on his head again instead.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 19, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr Detroit has been very good on D for many years even this year. Their issue this year has been not scoring goals. Even Osgood who has lost the number one job has a GAA of 2.81 going into this game. Howard's GAA is 2.18 so it is not like they give up a lot of goals.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 19, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Through 2 periods the Red Wings are outplaying the Caps. The only reason we are in the game at this point is Theo. Theo is stealing the game for the Caps so far. There is absolutely no way Theo can be blamed for the Wings goal either

Agreed, Detroit (is/has been) good.

But right now they are not the team they used to be (so the stats say)

...and they are facing the most potent offense in the LEAGUE.

They have played two AWESOME periods.

Posted by: hock1 | January 19, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

realoldcapsfan: Absolutely. And that goal by Cleary, Theo was down and he still almost made the save. He's really standing on his head tonight. Now I just wish we could win for him, he deserves to get a win.

14 shots through two periods must be a season low for us, by far.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 19, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

elicea: Well they should be getting his name right after this game.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 19, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

For a while there I thought we were tiring them out but at the end of the period it was the Caps who looked like they were skating in molasses. This third period should be interesting, who wants it the most? Theo is still playing extremely well. Excellent goal from the Caps. I hope the Caps show the Wings that it's a new era.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 19, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

That new geico commercial of Green is just grand.

Posted by: elicea | January 19, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

@wtf_e_fehr they are still giving up 2.48 goals per game which is 7th in the league so yes the Caps score a lot but Detroit is still one of the best defensive teams in the league considering how they have had so many guys hurt and are still 7th.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 19, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

The score shows 1-1.

The degree to which we've been dominated says it should be 10-0.

This game is right there with the SJ game in terms of us getting taken to the cleaners.

It's a miracle this game is tied. It's more than just Theodore keeping us in it. It's some kind of miracle.

Theo=Awesome!!!

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | January 19, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan

There is absolutely nothing the Caps could do in the 3rd period to "show the Wings that it's a new era."

We could score 5 goals and I wouldn't even begin to enterain those kinds of thoughts.

Detroit is absolutely still a juggernaut. I don't care what the records say. I've seen games where we've won by 5 or more goals where we didn't dominate the way the Wings have tonight.

They are so fundamentally sound and they execute both individually and as a team on a different level.

By any chance did they play Unleash the Fury right before the Caps 2 goals this period?

Hmmm!I guess I have to eat my words about Theo, right? Nothing could make me happier. What a game!! I was on the edge of my seat all evening. Who would have thought they could have turned it around after barely any shots in the first period? But that's exactly the kind of goal tending we need.

Posted by: caraveli | January 19, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Well, that was easy, huh?

Posted by: zmega | January 19, 2010 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Theo stole that one. Great teams find ways to win. CAPS!

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 19, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

There could be a perfect storm brewing here...You have a goalie who, before being injured (Varly), was playing lights out; you have a veteran in a contract year (Theo) who is not only playing for a contract, but who is on a team contending for a Stanley Cup; and you have another young goalie who, while inconsistent, has shown flashes of brilliance...

Now, if we can only get rid of that ANNOYING guy and his kid during the post game interviews....

Posted by: TimDz | January 19, 2010 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I'm giving Theo the First Star of the game...and the Second and Third Stars, too.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 19, 2010 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I've never felt more guilty as a fan about a win.

I think the Caps should call the NHL and offer that win to the Red Wings.

No, not seriously but I think some of you get my point.

The good things I would take from this game are Theo's play as well as Backstrom's and a few other individuals.

As a team, and as individuals, we still have a ways to go to play like the Wings do when they're on their game.

I wish we could play the Wings 6 times a year instead of only 1 or 2 or whatever it is now. I think it's good for a growing team like the Caps to play a team that executes like this both on an indvidual and a team level.

I can't wait to hear the postgame interviews. I'm sure it will be sure of phrases like "we didn't deserve that game" and "we saw why the Wings have been the class of the league for over a decade."

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 19, 2010 9:32 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan

This was almost definitely the biggest confidence builder of a game that Theo has had since coming to the Capitals.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 19, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

That has to be one of Backstrom's best goals as a Capital, if not the best.

You've got to respect the Wings. Not a star system, but a real team. Speed and great passing on offense, everyone in position and working hard on defense. None of the nonsense you see from Philthy or the Rangers. They show what NHL hockey should and could be.

Posted by: zmega | January 19, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin with 0 shots on goal and he played a great game.

Detroit just did almost everything right except get the win they rightfully deserved.

46-23 SOG and the scoring chances were probably just as lopsided.

If I'm Detroit, I walk away feeling like we won and sent a message to the Capitals that "you guys are pretty good but we've been doing this for years."

Simply amazing! How often does a team -- and especially the Capitals -- get out shot 2 to 1 at home and still win? (I'm sure it happened a number of times during Kolzig's tenure.)

Theo put up an outstanding performance to steal one for the Caps. How about Green and Morrisonn? Combined they accounted for 11 of our team's 25 blocked shots.

With a division title in sight, the Caps can't get complacent. They still have plenty to play for including conference standing and the President's Trophy.

Keep up the good work guys!

Lisa Hillary just said on Comcast that Varlamov did suffer a setback in his recovery and is probably out for the Olympics.

Posted by: zmega | January 19, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse

I think this game was glaring evidence of our need for more overall speed and grit at both ends. That's not even touching on the need for more skill and better decision-making out of our defensemen or the need to execute and do the "little things" better.

The way the Wings simply outskated us to many loose pucks and were able to win the majority of board/puck battles were areas of concern. They just knocked our guys off pucks like they weren't even there at times.

I read once about how Detroit finds some of their hidden gems late in drafts because other teams overlook certain players due to lack of prototypical size or think those players lack the toughness to play at this level. They see the player's skill and don't overly concern themselves with those shortcomings, knowing they can bring them along in those areas. They have a terrific scouting system and their ability to predict a player's potential despite some surface-level weaknesses is a big part of why they stand out from most other organizations.

RE; "Shimera" vs. "Chimera"

It has been Chimera with a hard ch sound, but it should be "Shimera". Since the trade, Chimera has tried to "fix" the pronunciation of it.

As for the game...welp. Let the over-zealous zeal and let the homers home.

The Wing were certainly better in the first half of the game and the Caps better, barely, in the last half.

With the people on this board I'd expect that if we won a Cup there be complaining about team speed, goaltending, blah blah blah.

We beat bad teams and it means nothing. We lose to bad teams and the it's the end of World. We lose to good teams and we suck, we beat good teams and we suck.

I'll take any kinda win during the playoffs but you have to look at the bigger picture during the regular season... this wasn't a good game and you better hope this was a hiccup

it was like watching last year's playoffs all over again

The Red Wings are awesome when they're healthy.

I pity the Western Conference top seed that's worked so hard to win their division all year, only to face the Wings, who will probably be a 6 or 7 seed.

And this year, some of the Wings' stars will be more rested than usual due to being out for a long period of time.

As far as the Capitals, it's great to see that they can win a game against a really good opponent (and make no mistake, even a somewhat healthy Detroit team, like tonight, is really good). It's also great to see that Theodore can steal a game against a really good opponent. Theodore was excellent tonight.

Posted by: blindskateluke | January 19, 2010 10:25 PM | Report abuse

A lot more than the final score matters unless you're talking about Game 7 of a playoff series.

Execution, fundamentals, good decision-making and quite simply the skill level and abilities of each player are things that need to be considered separately from the final score when you're trying to develop good habits that will transcend any indvidual game and when you're approaching the trade deadline with the anticipation of upgrading your team for a playoff run.

A goalie can steal a game for you. Good luck can steal a game for you. That doesn't mean you sit back content as a coach, player, GM or even a fan.

Detroit did so many things infinitely better than us in this game. I can't remember seeing the Caps play at that level at any point during their ascension to one of the better teams in the league over the last 2 years. Even in games where we've dominated on the scoreboard, we didn't execute and do the little things as well as Detroit did tonight.

Sure, a win is great but there is simultaneously a bigger picture that both coaches, players and even some fans think about.

You don't want to overanalyze one game either because both teams don't always play up to their abilities but there were a lot of things Detroit did tonight that without a doubt resonated with a young hockey team trying to take that next step.

I guarantee you Boudreau is not thinking that the final score is the only thing that mattered tonight. He saw his team get badly outclassed for the majority of a hockey game - a game he and the team considered a measuring stick. He saw Detroit execute in ways we have yet to do during his tenure. Call that an exaggeration if you want but I saw a number of little things that we need to start doing if we want to go from being a very good hockey team to a consistently great hockey team.

If a slump is coming I'd like to ask the Gods of fate to give us one more good game. I guess technically we've been lucky in our wins over Detroit and Florida, but in the end it's better to be lucky then good. Ironically both wins can be credited to the efforts of Theodore.
