Tonight's Lineup: Sabres at Caps

Rookie Simeon Varlamov will start in net for the Caps tonight as they attempt to clinch the Southeast Division title for the second straight season, while the Sabres are expected to start Ryan Miller. The Caps only need one point, so even an overtime loss will get it done.

Here's what I expect the rest of Coach Bruce Boudreau's lineup to look like:

Forward
Ovechkin-Fedorov-Kozlov
Laich-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr
Steckel-Aucoin-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Jurcina-Poti
Schultz-Pothier

Check back later for some postgame notes and quotes.

Big deal to let Varly have the shot to clinch the division...although I knew they'd have to plug him in somewhere to get him 2 more starts by the end of the year. Let's hope we feel the urgency and get 2 tonight.

If only NJ could somehow lose again tonight too...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 5:41 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully it will be a play-off type game tonight. Rock the Red!!!!

I like these lines. #1 scorer on the first line, #2, 3, and 4 scoring forward on the 2nd line. Tough to defend.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 3, 2009 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Basically, you got 70 goals on each of the first 2 lines. Sick.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 3, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

Capsfannmiss: It will be a playoff-like atmosphere. Sabres are fighting for their lives, this game is pretty much a must win for them so their energy level will be very high, hopefully we can match that energy. Go VARLY!

I will be shocked if these lines last through an entire period. The third line ... not my favorite. Bruce tried it during the last game - didn't work so well.

Our forwards didn't seem to realize it was back to 5 on 5...no need to collapse everyone to that one side.

Good lord another goal off one of our defensemen.

I was kinda hoping Varly wouldn't have to deal with that issue like Theo does EVERY game.

(wait, what am I thinking??)

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 3, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

They announced it in the arena as too many men...that's obviously what it was and looked like right at the end there. They obviously took Ovie out of the box (he usually serves those) when they saw Buffalo got one for a high stick as well. Don't want to pass up opportunity of Ovie out there with all that space 4 on 4.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

NHL.com reports the following penalties at the 19:59 mark of the 1st period:

Think Jersey is sneaking peaks at the scoreboard?

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 3, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand why everytime a team gets a bunch of PPs it's like the other team MUST have some PPs to even it out. It's stupid. Call penalties if you see them, don't start picking them out cause you've given a team a bunch and you want to even it out to be fair.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 3, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Varly is very good. Very very good.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Look how far out Varly came out to challenge that shot...I love the confidence.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

The Caps' numbers rush is nowhere near the motivation the Sabres have tonight. They've got a mathematical shot at the playoffs and games in hand against the Habs and Rags, plus they despise the Caps. I'd look for a hard-hitting Sabres team to come out there. Fortunately, they'll be going after Ovi, which will only motivate his game and the teams's. I'd look for the Sabres to come out strong and the Caps to wake up and win. Go Caps!

just sayin

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

I don't know how strong they came out. We've put all 5 of the goals in the net. Just bad luck is the only reason we were ever behind in this game.

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Philosophical question here:
We seem to have two pretty good young goalies, but, in two years...

You have to trade the athletic one (Varly) or the techician (Neuverth...excuse the spelling garble there)...

Who stays and who gets traded?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Stamkos has been playing superb of late...I wonder if Melrose had more time if the team would've still been playing this much better. People got spoiled with how sick the numbers Ovechkin and Crosby put up in their rookie season.

Wow another PP. Let's solidify #1 in the league on the PP right here.

The Caps scored three goals, yet are losing 2-1. Terrible!!!

I'm getting tired of watching Green play like a little girl when a puck is heading towards the Caps' corner. Instead of getting the puck and moving it, he slows down and waits for the opponent to get the puck so Green can hit him. Often the opponents keep the puck. Time to start playing like a man, Green. Take a hit to make the play. I learned that as a kid.

Ovie can catch him, but remember he WILL have 3 games less played at the end of the season he missed 2 for his trip to Russia and 1 from the heel injury. If he catches him in points he's the MVP. Right now it's still Malkin though imo.

Hey Phil...

You gave me crap on my choice of words...
how about a response to my actual question...

I'm just wondering....If we have two really good goalies, do we keep them both or do we trade one?
If we do, which one?

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

I think Ovi's got a shot -- he's been on fire lately. then again, he scores far better at home and they finishing on the road. If he passes Malkin I think the MVP pendulum swings back to Ovi

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

I still want Backie to get a point tonight to lock up 4 guys averaging a ppg. That's a pretty sick stat in today's NHL.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

I haven't heard anyone say it openly in a while, but given the extra weight placed on goals, vice assists, you don't think that'll factor? The Pens rush back has been impressive - almost as impressive as their lollygagging most of the season was weak.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 3, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov is the higher rated prospect...and I'd rather have the pure athlete in any case. You can teach positioning and technique. You can't teach raw talent. Honestly though it's never a bad thing to have 2 goalies who can do the job, you see it a lot more now around the league.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

I'm just wondering....If we have two really good goalies, do we keep them both or do we trade one?

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 8:51 PM

I've talked about this before. A few years ago the Sharks had Toskala, Kiprusoff, and Nabokov in their system at one time.

It's nice having two young goalies developing, but Neuvrith is not ready for the NHL. He is going to develop slower. I dont know, I cant answer it because we have to see how fast/if they develop properly.

Ideally, they both develop on the normal bell curve they should develop on and Varlamov becomes our franchise goalie for the next decade and Neuvrith gets traded/released eventually. Preferably for a hefty price; like I said if he develops too.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Phil. Not trying to be a P.I.T.A., just wanted the opinions of others here.

I've followed hockey for a while, but left for a while (life and stuff). I became interested again after watching OV over the past few years and have looked to forums like this to attain some knowledge from folks like you and the denizens here who understand the game more than I...

I can ask questions or just watch the posts go by...

Buffalo is actually trying to get the dirty goal...gotta luv it

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 3, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

We definitely got a break there. Although honestly he embellished a lot of the "push" from Mo there.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

That was a Hasek-like dive across the crease.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Sabres will probably complain about the no-goal but they should be happy they have 3 right now. 2 were deflected off of us.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Off topic (sorry Phil): If I hear that freaking McDonalds singing fish commercial, I'm gonna jump off my roof...

OK, I feel better now...

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Hello All!
Been watching the game but just got to the pc. Yeah, we can't screw Varly like this. We just need to stay disciplined, play some recognizable defense, and two points should be ours.

Pothier with puck caught in his skates > Juice with puck caught in his skates

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

They have every right to complain about the non-goal.

Posted by: cocorules | April 3, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Schultz saves the day, never thought I'd hear that!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

I think it was a weak wash out, but it was far more legit than the wash out of Laich's goal the other night. Mo didn't do much to alter his direction and he did plow into Varly.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

We've had some very nice play, but sloppy around our own crease. We've been fortunate.

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

While I may be the #1 guy here saying that Schultz shouldn't be in the lineup, that is the 2nd really nice play he's made tonight. He's playing out of his mind! Unofortunately is just "normal" for most Dmen.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 3, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

@TimDz
I wouldn't get rid of either of the kid goalies. How about this scenario: next year Johnny is gone and Varly is backing up Theo. Neuvirth stays in Hershey gaining experience (with Holtby backing up). The next year Theo is gone. Neuvirth moves up to DC to share time with Varly. Holtby takes over as #1 in Hershey. Meanwhile GMGM will have drafted a couple more kids who are moving up the development ladder.

Posted by: tess2201 | April 3, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Yeah that uh, singing fish commercial actually has me nauseated at the thought of a filet 'o fish, and I usually love dem tings.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 3, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Varlie has been cat-like quick and focused, even with all these crazy goals!!!

In the words of ESPN's Bill Pidto...

"I think he's got...some...ABILITY!"

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 3, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom with faceoff wins????

WHATS NEXT FOR THE KID!?!?!??

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 3, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Ovi, man

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

That should not be a penalty. He's going hard to the net and get's checked to hold him in line to run into Miller.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

thats retarded. the buffalo guy pushed OV into miller, ov couldn't stop his momentum. Miller should get a penalty as well for doing that to OV.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

That bounce was scary...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 3, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Semyon lookin good

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Let me clarify though, if the puck somehow trickled in after the big collision with Miller I think it should get washed out. But that should not be a penalty.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Our clearing attempts are so weak.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Tampa tied it up with Jersey 3-3

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 3, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Running around like chickens with our heads cut off in our zone on that one. No chance for Varly to keep up with that play.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

We got this though...Feds dramatic hat trick for the game winner.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

@tess: I see Varly as special, but Neuvirth I find intriging. I have no idea who Holtby is (you obviously have more acumin in this area, so I will defer to you on that).

The best thing that I can see is the fact that we have a super pipeline in Hershey.

In looking long term, I think GMGM is the key to our long term success and continual competitiveness for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Dave,
I like...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 3, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

I'm fine with going to OT. Just don't blow it.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Devils 4-3

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

this is getting a little too scary for me.. come on Caps, at least 1 point!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

We need the win Rach. Devils back on top of Tampa need to drop our magic number to 6.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you Dave. two 2nite

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Tess- I couldn't agree more. I think we're set in goal for a long time to come. The only problem is they are so young and still have a lot of growing and improving to do throughout the ranks. The only reason I'm hesitant is there are many example of goales being highly regarded and not making it. Most recently NYR drafted Al Montoya out of Michigan and he never made it to the NHL and never will. You just don't know but I agree, we appear to be set for a while. All 3 can't turn out to be busts can they? Odds are in our favor.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 3, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Dave: you're right. But it's getting a little too open for the Sabres now..

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

@TimDz
As for Holtby, I can't tell you if he's any good. He's backing up Machesney tonight. He just arrived in Hershey today after an outstanding junior hockey career in Saskatoon. By all accounts he's very good. I saw him this summer at Caps development camp and thought he did well. I can't wait to see him in action, hopefully next weekend.

Bears at Bridgeport:
Bears lose 4-3 in OT.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Tampa just tied it. It's 4 all.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 3, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Well about to be division champs...but I'd really like to get this 2nd point and for Tampa to pull off a miracle.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Ok, title locked up. Let's get the win!

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

So proud of Tampa, they're so resilient! Now let's score!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

@pokerface:
Montoya is not exactly the next Brodeur, but he did win his first NHL game recently (ok so it was against Colorado!):

Posted by: Terptwin | April 3, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

We're goin' to OT because Pothier totally missed his assignment on their tying goal Locker...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 3, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

No I'd rather Ovie just buried #56 so I can go out.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

crap...

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Sigh...not very satisfying.

Too sloppy getting out of our zone.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Sonyask | April 3, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Tampa needs to come through for us now in OT

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Dave: guess you can go out now...have a beer for me...

Posted by: TimDz | April 3, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

lots of Buffalo fans in the arena tonight.
awfully passive way to clinch your division.
firewagon hockey at its finest.
i just want to sleep for 10 hours and wake up in the playoffs

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 3, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

No I'm going to watch the end of the Tampa/NJ game on Center Ice. Then I'm going to have a few beers for all our horrid clears/passes coming out of our zone tonight.

Then again we didn't get many good bounces tonight. Oh well. Sigh NJ wins

NJ Wins. Horrid.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Magic number for #2 seed is 7 points with 4 games to play.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 3, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Buffalo deserved the win. I was not impressed with the Caps power play, two guys up and the puck did not move, it was just an OV and Green shooting practice, the goalie was totally prepared for them.
