Tonight's Lineup vs. Colorado

Here are the forward combos:

The 'D' pairings

Kolzig will start in net and will oppose Theodore.

Pettinger and Pothier are listed as scratches. So that means Poti, Clark and Johnson are on IR.

As long as they don't shoot stick side on Ollie, we should be fine....

Posted by: Lee | January 9, 2008 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Just asking if anyone has seen him of late and can give an assesment. I have not since he left Montreal due to our great East-West schedule.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 9, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

You would think from the DC news that Joe Gibbs died or something? And that is coming from a Skins fan!

p.s. I would trade all three Lombardi Trophies for a Lord Stanleys Cup ANYDAY!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 9, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

That was a tight-checking period. I don't think we're gonna see another 8-6 game tonite. We'll be lucky if there are 50 shots between both teams.

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

He doesn't have a spectacular record, but yesterday he played very good against Detroit.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Hi pmoravek.
Agreed, looks like an old fashioned Wales/Campbell Conf scrum.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 9, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Mauree, ok thanks. Did he win? Confidence good or shaken?
I can look up the stats but your gut feelings?

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 9, 2008 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Augh Nyls!
To be fair, Theodore made a great save.

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I think Emmy looks better.
How about you guys?

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like Fehr is doing well in his return at the AHL level. I haven't heard better news than that all day.

Posted by: Kurt | January 9, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

I like him too. I didn't want to say it to jinx it, but now it's all your fault :p
Seriously, he's being physical - I liked in the first when someone hit Backstrom he hitted him right back.

I think a small boost in confidence - he really was great yesterday... yet he lost 1-0. Put it another way: if he plays like yesterday we're in trouble.

1 minute till the happy birthday :) I hope its happening

Thanks Mauree,
Like I said, a Wales/Campbell kinda game.
Teddy is playing well.

Green, wow. In a year, that goes in!
Sign him GMGM. geez.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Huge win!

Olie's always shaky but he did come up big late.

I just love thinking about all the clowns in Toronto, Atlanta, Buffalo and even Carolina who were praying for an Avalance win tonight.

Posted by: Oneal | January 9, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

I hope this is a pivotal game for Kolzig. Maybe now he can get his confidence back and turn this season around.

If he plays like that behind us, I feel really good about our chances of making it to the playoffs.

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Tell Betteman these cross conference games have no rivalry value. It'll make him feel better about next season.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 9, 2008 9:33 PM | Report abuse

guys look at the standings, and let's root for the Ducks together - they win and we catch Toronto.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 9:34 PM | Report abuse

2 more wins, and we're looking at 20-20-5, which to me looks like a VERY comforting number. Tarik, any chance we officially bring back the P-word if they hit that mark?

Posted by: Kurt | January 9, 2008 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Ducks win and we PASS Toronto

Posted by: dmg | January 9, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

oh yeah dmg I mixed it with Florida.

By the way, gosh did you see Laing left eye? What was wrong with it? Did it happen tonight? He's a warrior...

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

GREAT win. Solid D by a lot of the young guys. Schultz made a few key plays there when the Avs were buzzing around the net, and Morrison's diving poke check was classic. Great win.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | January 9, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Come one Oneal, you've got to give Olie some credit for tonight. Always with the caveat...granted he didn't see much action, but it just goes to show what he can still do if the defense holds up for 2.5 periods...he'll have some gas left in the tank for making the saves.

he's too old and slow now to face 30+ shots a game, but keep the shots down and he's still got it.

/wow that's a ramble
//no celebratory drinks for me

Posted by: Yosh | January 9, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Hannan high sticked him in the second. Ref was standing right next to it, watching, and Laing went down, was down a second, got up patting his face, and skated off the ice since it happened in the offensive zone. It was a tough move to get off while we had the puck deep, much respect to that. The ref missed the call because he saw the original play probably like I did, that Steck's high sticked him, but the replay clearly showed it was Hannan. 4 minutes that we should have had. No use complaining about the refs after a win, though.
Olie won us this game.

Posted by: Whiter Mage | January 9, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Olie looked good all game - then literally saved us at the end. Boo! will be happy when he returns from his lady skating (jk dude :p ). Nothing much he could do on the goal, everybody relaxed too much after the second goal - can't do that in the NHL, they score after 10 seconds lol. It's cause most Caps are so young.

@Whiter Mage
thanks, I missed that. His eye looked really bad on a camera zoom they had on him.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Yosh I think there's always going to be a caveat with Olie. I doubt that any of us have forgotten how old and slow he looked in that shoot-out against Detroit a few weeks back.

But I've consistantly said I hope I'm wrong and I have to give him credit for coming up big tonight. And actually, he came up pretty big last week against Montreal as well.

Has he turned the corner? I sure hope so.

Posted by: Oneal | January 9, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Lainger's eye....
'Tis but a flesh wound.

That guy is a friggin' beast.
He is making VERY hard to send him back down after Clarkie gets healthy.

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Yosh is on the money re: Olie. Brodeur is older but he's played behind the best defense in the league for most of his career. Ergo plenty left in the tank. If we had a Langway/Stevens type out there Olie would be just fine. Our D are all YOUNG guys give 'em time. Course time is what Olie doesn't have. That and lateral quickness.

Posted by: kevbpgc | January 9, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of young d-men.
Did you guys think Emmy shook the rust off.
I really think he earn himself a sweater on a more regular basis if he takes the body the way he did tonite.
He made some good plays, didn't make any glaring mistakes.
What's the consensus?

Posted by: pmoravek | January 9, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I didn't notice Emminger too much tonight but when I did he was solid. Not great, not bad. He had a couple chances to clear the puck and didn't get it out of the zone but I think you could say that about most guys. Morrison and Schultz impressed me tonight.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | January 9, 2008 10:19 PM | Report abuse

10 minutes for Eminger.. up from 6 against Montreal.

Schultz looked good and had 23 minutes! Mike Green had almost 27!!! If Green doesn't make the All Star game it's criminal.

And BTW there's no way they could send Laing back down now. Someone needs to check the Caps' record with him in the line-up versus without..

Posted by: Oneal | January 9, 2008 10:24 PM | Report abuse

Great overall defensive performance-Adn Laing needs therapy.

Posted by: dave | January 9, 2008 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Eminger did impress me - for he specifically did a few times what I wanted to see all season long from our D-men: he sat people behind our net.

Besides him, all Caps D played really good today - yes even Schultz - except for that 30 seconds when they relaxed.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Great game! Olie looked solid to me. Great toe saves. He looked really good.

I tried to watch Eminger and Erskine. They both looked quite serviceable. No real blunders, kept it all to the outside and cleared the zone. Kept it real simple - which is EXACTLY what rusty buckets need to do in a game situation.

The D did let them off the hook late in the game. I think they only had like 9 or 10 shots on net ALL GAME until the last period. They ended up with 19.

I noticed that the Red Wings started their D coverage at the offensive zone blue line and back pedaled to the red line where they firmed up. We did pretty close to the same thing, except for the final period.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Re Eminger: his 4 hits were the most of any player on either team

Posted by: dmg | January 9, 2008 10:33 PM | Report abuse

That Red Wings reference was to last night's RW/AV game.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 10:33 PM | Report abuse

I kinda liked the post-game coverage. Ok, it was immersed in Skin talks, but I liked:

* they questioned Hanlon as scout. They were like: we're winning with BB, why bring back Hanlon what the heck?
* guy whined a lot when BB got cut off when talking about his birthday :D

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

This is getting interesting. 41 points ties us with Florida for 12th in the conference. Carolina with 48 points is very reachable right now.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

I listened to the game on the radio, and they credited Laich with the first goal. From Tarik's game summary article, Brashear scored the goal on a deflection of Laich's shot. Anyone get a good enough look at the play to describe what happened?

Posted by: Gelf | January 9, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

WOW!!! Now THAT was a game!! Woo hoo!!! GO CAPS!! :-D I wish I had gone, after all ... :-/ BTW, did anyone sing?!?

LOL - thanks for playing! Close, but no cigar (hey, 3 outta 5 ain't bad). Having said that, your version works, too! Any other brave souls care to tackle the challenge (from the previous thread)?

Let me start by saying :-P Secondly, thank you for ONCE AGAIN giving our keeper his props!! I could get used to this! Lastly, yes, I was at my "lady" skate because, ehm, I AM a lady!! (Or at least I try to be - sometimes it is difficult on this board ;-)). I thought I had outed myself yesterday when I told BernieWolfeFan that I just wanted to pinch BB's cheek sometimes (he says the darndest things), but apparently not! :-) However, now that you have officially referred to me as "he" and "dude", I believe that it is my moral obligation to come clean and reveal myself! LOL!! :-D So there ya go ... SURPRISE!!!

They're talking about the Caps in Anaheim at the first intermission. Man that makes me so proud of our boys :)

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 11:00 PM | Report abuse

lol Boo! oh my goodness :D here I was all proud of my manly-peer-pressure ahahah :)

Anyway, Olie was great today, and I liked what BB said about it: that he was really focused during practice yesterday. We're going to need him a lot during the last 40 games.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 11:05 PM | Report abuse

The Laich goal was pretty nice. Laich won the faceoff, Bradley picked up the puck (Erskine was about to throw it on the net) and brought it up the boards and just short of the goal line backhanded it back towards the circle where Laich one-timed it off the post and in. Pretty fancy little play for those 2 guys.

Posted by: Jeff | January 9, 2008 11:06 PM | Report abuse

This Anaheim/Toronto game is pretty entertaining. It's always nice to see a team stick up for their teammates after a questionable hit.

Plus, the Ducks are up 2-0...

aha! no worries about your manly peer pressure - i can handle it! after all, i AM a hockey fan. so don't go getting all gentlemanly on me now!! ;-)

man, all this pro-olie talk ... could it be true?!? next no one will be talking about trading Ovie!! woo hoo!!!

Posted by: Boo! | January 9, 2008 11:14 PM | Report abuse

my thoughts exactly, did you see Bertuzzi lol?

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 11:15 PM | Report abuse

Mauree -- I saw him go into the corner and I immediately thought of his previous bad decision a few years ago. I wouldn't want him on the Caps, simply because I can't hear his name without thinking about that incident.

Posted by: Jeff | January 9, 2008 11:19 PM | Report abuse

I like hot sauce with my crow.

I was pretty hard on Olie myself. Quite honestly, he was playing awful. But something has happened. I don't know what it was, but he seems to be more focused and is making saves that a few weeks ago were beyond him.

I think it's a combination of him coming out of a haze, and the fact that the D is playing better in front of him.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 11:27 PM | Report abuse

ohhh I'm not aware of what happened a few years ago? It's an entertaining game though :)

I hope Olie keeps this up - if he does most fans will recognize his value. We need a good goalie figure to cheer at home.

Posted by: mauree | January 9, 2008 11:28 PM | Report abuse

I thought right after I saw the play that the puck deflected off of Brash's leg. In house they credited it to Laich (even got him the #1 star) but afterwards I see it was credited to Brash. Reminds me of Semin's shot that touched a thread on Clark's sweater last year and Clark got the goal

Tonight I noticed Eminger played aggresively, hit several Avalanche players and was ready to drop the gloves during one exchange. Not bad for a guy shaking off multiple layers of rust.

Nice start to the homestand.

Kolzig looked darn good tonight and the defense did a great job clearing the loose pucks away from the net ... that is, when Q "Block Party" Laing wasn't in the way!

Posted by: Caps fan in TN | January 10, 2008 12:07 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I know. But some schmuck in Canada will think we're starting a movement down here to trade him and AO to Nashville or something idiotic like that.

if you want an autograph, i can get one for you ... i can leave it for you in will call the next time you come to a game (i will leave it under the name "c.o. angels" ;-)). otherwise, the easiest way to get an authentic Caps autograph is to join the fan club ( memberships are $10-$20 and include an autographed puck!

mauree/greg s.:
looks like allstarguru wants to join the choir! (unless he is being sarcastic, but i can't imagine that anyone would say anything negative about our fine keeper! ;-).)

oh i know - there are a lot of us! i guess that's what happens when you grow up in the great white north. ironically, most of the hockey fans that i know (outside of this board) are women. in fact, i often take a fellow female fan with me to games, and she gets into it more than most men that i know! :-D

Posted by: Boo! | January 10, 2008 12:16 AM | Report abuse

@Steve R.

Poor guy! You missed a good game!

Olie looked competent. He made some really good saves that a few weeks ago would have been goals for sure. Schultz actually got a hit in - I saw it and had to check the number 3 times to make sure it was really him. Eminger had 4 hits and 1 blocked shot. He looked good, too. Not great, but good.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 10, 2008 12:20 AM | Report abuse

Steve R:
Greg S didn't mention Laing ... once again, a shot blocking machine!!!

Posted by: Boo! | January 10, 2008 12:23 AM | Report abuse

Yep! That guy's nuts. Blocked 3 shots, 2 in the last few seconds of the game - when it really counted - one right after the other. He had blocked a blue line shot. The rebound went back out to the blue line and the guy took another one. Lainger was bouncing up and down on the ice like a kid on a pogo stick!

Posted by: Greg S. | January 10, 2008 12:31 AM | Report abuse

Just got home from the hershey game. Fehr looked good a bit winded at times registered a point on his first shift 40 seconds into the game. He was originally credited with the goal, but was late credited to bourque. good win overall.

aww man sorry to hear that. I was a good game. Only 2-1 but 3 post hit. Bradley got in a short fight, Eminger and Schultz looked good. Green did a few of his rush to the net and hit the post once (really hard lol).

Hope you can catch next game

You serious abt the autograph? Please not c.o. angels lol.

Nite guys & girls

Posted by: mauree | January 10, 2008 12:38 AM | Report abuse

Sorry I'm late to the party - it was a heck of a game!

RE: Laing
"Atta-boy Quentin!!" just about sums it up. That was me yelling that line after two PK blocked shots in a row if anyone near 421 heard it. The team would be insane to send him down when everyone's healthy again, but at the same time it would be tough to send down anyone else and not expect to lose them to waivers. Who is safe to send down?

RE: Emmy
Eminger made some mistakes today, but none of them were costly. There was one positional mistake he made in the third that led to a scoring chance, but aside from that I thought he did an excellent job. Well, at least as good as Jurcina. We should avoid getting into the mindset of "Eminger is amazing" when he's able to make normal hockey plays that any defenseman should make (something I caught myself doing tonight).

RE: Singing to BB
The scoreboard wished him happy B-day at the first stoppage in the first period. I didn't hear loud guy starting a chorus...

RE: Fehr
Oh man. Fehr in a Capitals jersey come trade deadline would be AWESOME. Think of what we could shop to actually acquire our missing pieces? We'd finally have enough NHL quality forwards to get some more D!

Posted by: Raber | January 10, 2008 2:12 AM | Report abuse

Sure! I would be happy to do it, and would actually have to leave it under your real name (they ask for ID at will call whenever you pick something up). Having said that, I would have to verify that they would let me do that - I have not left anything other than tickets before. If not, I am sure we could figure something else out.

I agree about Laing - I love that kid! I would rather see him play than Schultz ...

Posted by: Boo! | January 10, 2008 6:27 AM | Report abuse

I went to bed last night after watching the Caps -> Project Runway -> UFC. Did people actually start saying Olie might be shaking off rust? Uh oh. Then again, when the Caps D holds opposing teams to fewer shots, Olaf's gonna be fresher in the last 5 minutes of a 2-1 game. Just sayin~

Does anyone need to go down when Clark comes back? Last night we had what, two scratches, and it's set up so you can have three, right? And if you ask me, trade Pettinger or Eminger if you can rather than waste shoving a waiver wire down the drain.

Posted by: Whiter Mage | January 10, 2008 7:27 AM | Report abuse

We only have two scratches because Poti is on IR apparently. I suppose that can delay things for a bit, but they're going to have to do something eventually.

As for the others, I think only Schultz is waiver-exempt and that's only for a few more games. Well, technically Backstrom and Green can probably go down waiver-free too.

Posted by: tallbear | January 10, 2008 8:14 AM | Report abuse

I was at the game last night and I thought Emminger looked pretty good considering his circumstances. I think under BB he could become the defensemen he was also marked to be...if given the oppurtunity. I agree there was nothing about the Erskine/Emminger line that was risky or flashy but I felt they held their own.
Olie looked good last night...maybe the team is beginning to build momentum and everyone is getting caught up in it. It is so awesome to finally go to games and have confidence that our boys can pull through and get a win.
The place looked pretty full last night and if we could get a good winning streak going...well who knows what could happen.
Also as a sidenote..there are a lot more women fans out there then you would think.

Posted by: K | January 10, 2008 8:37 AM | Report abuse

Pettinger has to be the odd man out. I'm sure they'll do everything they can to keep him, but at this point in his career all he provides is depth.

Fleischmann has played better lately, but clearly he's also on the bubble.

Laing has to stay.. the contribution he's made has been enormous.

Posted by: Oneal | January 10, 2008 8:50 AM | Report abuse

I agree...Laing has definately earned a place here permantently...I don't know why he's never been up here before...did Hanlon not realize his potential or something? I'm not really sure how call ups work...I just think it's odd since he's contributing so much...

Posted by: K | January 10, 2008 8:54 AM | Report abuse

When Poti and Pothier are healthy, obviously Erskine and Eminger return to the pine.

As for the forwards, when Clark is healthy, I think he takes a top spot, drops Flash to fourth line and sits Bradley/Laich on the bench. (I like Bradley's tenacity, but...)

And please get rid of Pettinger. He's done very little.

Laing has earned his spot. Now if Fehr is healthy enough to join the Caps, it'd cause more shuffling.

Morning all! Great win last night. From what I heard on the radio, Ollie made some stellar saves. He did only face 18 shots, but stood tall when we needed him. Now, can he follow that up on Sunday? D played well. Hard fought win we would not have had earlier in the season.

Tarik, was Brash playing defense last night? In your article....

K, well Laing is 28 I think. Probably didn't think he had much upside. And I believe last year Steckel was the callup when we needed a checker.

I can't believe that Semin will win 9 millions in the next 2 years. He sucks.
Another bad game for him.

He Tarik tell him to wake up. I wish we trade him

Olie made a save and we garnered two points. If 'Zilla can get more consistent we will have a good run. The D are starting to gel around him closing off passing and shooting lanes and getting more aggressive in front of the net. Eminger played well and the more rugged he gets the more time he'll get.

Leap frog over the Leafs with the Panthers, Thrash and Sabres next. The Sabres play the Sens tonight, and the Devils on Sat. The Thrash and Panthers play tonight (not sure who to root for); The Thrash play the Pens on Sat; and the Panthers play Tampa on Sat. By Sun with a win over Philly the Caps could be looking a double leap frog over the Sabres and Panthers.

"The Thrash and Panthers play tonight (not sure who to root for)"

Doesn't matter who wins, as long as it DOESN'T go into overtime. We don't want BOTH of them getting points.

If there was any lingering doubt that the "injury excuse" for the team's record in the first 2 months of the season was totally bogus, these past few weeks should take care of it. This team CAN win with key injuries, under the right coach. It's a damn shame he wasn't brought in a lot sooner.

Nice win last night for Gabby's birthday. I'm very excited about the rest of the homestand.

Let's Go Caps!!

I like Semin and I think that he'll continue to grow to be a high caliber player. I think having AO, Semin, and Backstrom here is a really good thing and shouldn't be changed. Could Semin work like AO did and become more defensive and more of a two way player? Absolutely, but I don't think he sucks by any stretch of the imagination...he's just not as complete as maybe he should be.

Several things from last night. First, good talking to you Tarik!

Brash did anything and everything he could. I missed the three stars but he should have been one of them. He was all over the ice and just playing the role of getting into the head of the other team. He showed again why he has the "A".

Laing's performance late was worthy of that standing ovation. What an awesome job he did and to see the fans come to their feet, not because they had to but because they wanted to was great.

Olie looked great and got better as the game went on. It was said all last year that the fewer shots he faces, the more wins we get. It's true!

I did hear some people singing Happy Birthday in the lower bowl.

Bradley's fight. He was dumped into the boards awkwardly then took matters into his own hands. Good to see someone other than Brashear go toe-to-toe.

And lastly...GO CAPS!
