Too Much Carter

Well, the Caps still haven't been able to take a lead into an intermission. They fought back after surrendering a goal only 42 seconds in, but Jeff Carter scored his second of the night (and third of the series) with 1:27 left in the first to tie the game 2-2.

The Caps are pushing back tonight. The power play looks good. Defense, um, not so much.

Defense doesn't look terrible, though, which is an improvement.

I want a Backstrom-Briere bout! Atta boy, Backstrom!

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | April 17, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Tarik--you're off on the score. It's Caps 2, Flyers 1, Refs 1. Apparently hand passes and dives are now permitted.

Posted by: Right Winger | April 17, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

@Right winger: You forgot sticks to the face.

Posted by: Raber | April 17, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

The refs missed a big high sticking call at the end of the 1st. The Cap's would have carried a four minute power play into the end of the period, and obviously, Carter's goal wouldn't happen. Huge mistake by the refs!

Posted by: Kevin | April 17, 2008 8:04 PM | Report abuse

it's playoff hockey i know, but it seems like the punches to the face seem to be flying in the crease after plays (fehr). i think if it's ok, we need to step up and join in on the fun...

plus, if what jurcina did was a cross-check, we aren't going to able to fight back at all. he was trying to get that filthy flyer off his back...

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 17, 2008 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Regardless of the extended 5-on-3, the Caps are owed some PPs.

F Jurcina.

Posted by: Hector Camacho | April 17, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@ King Huet (from last thread)

Fair enough (on Huet analysis). Just an observation I made.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

I told you Nicky and Semin coming up big :) Now I hope Ovie and Huet just took a big chunck out of both Jurcina and Poti in the intermission.

Ovie and Laich come up big in the second. Green maybe too.

Posted by: Kim | April 17, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

How do they not call a high-stick... it would even be acceptable to call it late considering bradley's face was covered in blood.

Just terrible.

We gotta keep our heads up though... our power play looked awesome and we killed TWO 5-on-3s... gotta stay positive we can win this one.

Posted by: Zack | April 17, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

How big of a hero would Backy be if he threw down with Danny boy? Please, get the stripes out of the way and let this happen.

Also, B.s. call on Juice. Is Semin the only one to stick up for himself?

Posted by: Harry | April 17, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Looking better, hated the late goal. Poti missed his man

Posted by: Leeguru | April 17, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

At least Emmy's hitting - need more of that down there.

Posted by: keef | April 17, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Leeguru:
Are they playing physical enough for ya?!? ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | April 17, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure why the D is catching so much $h!t tonight - they're 4-4 on the PK. They have their issues but they're young, can't argue with the PKs.

Posted by: keef | April 17, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

No boo, they aren't. On the last goal several caps had a chance to CLEANLY crush carter and they didn't

Posted by: Leeguru | April 17, 2008 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Jurcina has made so many costly mistakes this whole series. WTF.

how come you're not at B Dub's watching the game?

Posted by: MNMNT | April 17, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Leeguru:
As you know, I'm not fighter - I never call for blood. However, I have to agree with your post a couple of threads back - if they are going to win this series, they are going to have to beat the Flyers at their own game. Not dirty, but hard, gritty and physical. The goals won't be pretty, but they will count. LIKE THAT ONE!!! :-D LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: Boo! | April 17, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

I love Eminger and I think he should have been playing the entire season.

Posted by: Mave | April 17, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!

I second that!

I'll probably head up there later... Thursday nights are 50 cent boneless wings so they get busy during dinner. My friend has a HD big screen, I watch games at her place. Besides, I highly doubt they'd put a game on at B-dubbs, especially during baseball season...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

come on guys lets get another one!!!

Posted by: BearsWoooo | April 17, 2008 8:22 PM | Report abuse

WOW OV nive move

Posted by: BearsWoooo | April 17, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

I usually go there when I visit during the winter. They put the game on for us whenever we asked. They should have it on the big screen for sure. I have some friends there watching it now, as well as on Tuesday.

Posted by: MNMNT | April 17, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

finishing up the season, i was saying i still had the same problems w/ the gm as when the caps were at the bottom of the standings.

people like laich (who gm tried to be able to send to the minors/ pay little) & green (who gm signed 2 too short a contract) made a big difference. and d not having a role model for how to play also made a difference that can be covered up some by an offense 1st style but not entirely.

not a big eminger fan but something besides play on the ice has been deciding his playing time this year which, again, is a gm responsibility.

Posted by: jim* | April 17, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Canadian beer's cheaper at the house... I've asked them twice when I've been to put a game on, and they wouldn't. Generally, they're not a bad place to watch games, but for hockey, I prefer to do my swearing and cursing at home.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

I'm an Eric Fehr fan, I've gotta say. He may be my next jersey...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

fehr and emminger need to be in sweater the rest of this series....

Love how the caps are crashing the Off zone this game...now don't let up

(how insane is the stat about 4 straight end of periods with Flyer goals...)

Posted by: chris larry | April 17, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

@jim*

I thought that entry level deals are 3yrs which is what Green has, ending this season.

Posted by: keef | April 17, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah my friends know the bartenders. Problem is, one of the bartenders is a fan and he tivo's the games so he doesn't want anyone to watch it. We watched the game on one of the side TVs. But I'm sure it's on the big screen tonight. Big HD screen at the house isn't bad either!

Posted by: MNMNT | April 17, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps can keep the Flyers back, the fans will surely start to boo ... THAT would be fun!! :-) Gotta believe it would get into the Flyers' heads ... COME ON BOYS!!!

Posted by: Boo! | April 17, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Semin, come back!! We need you!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

3 great stops in a row by Huet!

Posted by: uncatim | April 17, 2008 8:32 PM | Report abuse

I got my Huet jersey today from Coolhockey. unfortunately it was #39 instead of #38. I had to return it today. The jersey looked badass though.

Posted by: MNMNT | April 17, 2008 8:32 PM | Report abuse

WTF did I miss, why is Green in the box?

Posted by: BMT | April 17, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green, calm your a$$ down. Woosahhhhhh, wooosaaaahhh..

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Oh look, the refs called a penalty on the Caps. Imagine that....

Posted by: Leeguru | April 17, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

this is why i think we get the shaft all the time - green for roughing!? what a farce! that goes on every play with the flyers...

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 17, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Refs are playing well for the Flyers. They're playing great D in the defensive zone behind the net and doing pretty good at ignoring the elbows and sticks of the Flyers.

Posted by: Raber | April 17, 2008 8:35 PM | Report abuse

How are Ref's measured/monitored? Or are they? Anyone?

Posted by: BMT | April 17, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov useless

Posted by: fat jack | April 17, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

They had the director of officiating on XM today with Bettman. They say they are constantly reviewing how the refs are doing. And non of the series have had any extra goaltender interferience....

Posted by: Leeguru | April 17, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Hey BMT, I think they're rated on how many Timmy Ho donut holes they bring Bettman during the course of the week prior. They bring him lots, he gives them games. More donut holes, more important games.

Obviously, we're getting the guys with stock in Horton's.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

what would be cool is if the refs had scorecards that were public and they would have ratings of how inattentive they were.. that would be hot

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 17, 2008 8:40 PM | Report abuse

wachovia kinda quite

Posted by: keef | April 17, 2008 8:42 PM | Report abuse

All NHL officials are rated for vision by Mr Magoo and for good judgment by Britney Spears.

I hope Semin is OK.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 17, 2008 8:44 PM | Report abuse

I wish these guys would leave our poor Semin alone. They're trying to kill him...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Hey Leeguru and jmu_capsgirl,

LMAO!

No one likes being audited but for Refs its time to check consistency, especially team to team consistency. Hey Bettman, I'll write the program for you!

Posted by: Leeguru | April 17, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

nice play coburn

Posted by: fat jack | April 17, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Brilliant Coburn! Way to fall...up. That wasn't obvious at all.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

They should have had a goal....two goal lead at intermission!!!

Posted by: straub21 | April 17, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

And they miss another high stick and that should have been a penalty shot.

This is downright ridiculous

Posted by: Raber | April 17, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Much better period. Still need to be a bit more physical, but a period of sound play.

Posted by: nadir | April 17, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

nice escaped period without heartbreaking goal!!! Start 3rd on PP.....attack!

Posted by: chris larry | April 17, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I sincerely wish that Comcast anchors could pronounce people's names right.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 17, 2008 8:50 PM | Report abuse

That was unbelievable ... how could they not have called more?!? At least they boxed the blatant push of the net.

Leeguru:
You don't strike me as the 'golly' type ... ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | April 17, 2008 8:50 PM | Report abuse

5 on 5 we appeared pretty strong at the end. stay outta the bin, and we've got a great shot. starting the 3rd with a PP tally would be crucial....

Posted by: Pivonka | April 17, 2008 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Get off of your knees ref...
you're blowing the game...

Posted by: JSchon | April 17, 2008 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Anyone notice Green took a couple of shifts at forward? Boy did the Flyers look confused....

Posted by: sj9096 | April 17, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Love ya Semin, scars and all.

But seriously if they let someone take a stick to Brooks Laich I am going to hurt someone.

Come on guys we need two more. Do we get wings if they score 6 on a road playoff game? If so, then let's get three.

Ovie, Laich, and Semin (because he is pissed and will have the next Russian passion commercial).

Posted by: Kim | April 17, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Puckguru's Observations

I'm not sure who has the larger yellow streak down his back, S. Morrison, or Eric Fehr. Morrison has played like a frightened little b'otch this entire series. Fehr's trepedation doesn't surprise me. Indelibly etched in my memory is him allowing an apponent to REPEATEDLY SMASH HIS FACE INTO THE ICE during the finals of Hershey's Calder Cup winning season.
Can anyone possibly be more INVISIBLE than Victor Kozlov? I think it's plain to see why he has yet to score his first playoffs goal ----- in an 11 season career. Spineless, to say the least.
And finally, I think it's PAST TIME Sasha Semin ( My favorite Cap ) gets credit for being the most FEARLESS and INVOLVED Cap in this sewries so far. He's shown great courage, and hasn't taken a backwards step yet from The Broad Street Bullies. He's been tenacious, creative AND DISCIPLINED; something many have been quick to criticize about his game in the past. Come on everyone. What more does the guy have to do to get some luv around here? He's been OUTSTANDING!!!!

Posted by: fat jack | April 17, 2008 9:17 PM | Report abuse

The officiating is a complete joke. I cant believe the call on Kozlov, let alone the two missed 4 min PPs. In spite of the Refs the Caps are still in it. They deserve the win.
