So how is King helping the Caps? First of all, he doesn't seem to be winning these fights against the goons around the league. Besides that, why shouldn't he wait to retaliate against a real player who takes liberties with one of the Caps? That would make some sense. Now, he is punched out and essentially useless for the rest of the night.

Posted by: zmega | November 3, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

BTW, I've been catching posts here and there about my buddy cstanton and why he left.

I thought he said that if about 15 folks asked him to leave, then he would.

Maybe he counted 15 and left dodge?

Gotta admit, I do miss the civil and sensible cstanton...

NOT THE OCCASIONAL PSYCHO!

GET ONE FEHR!

I've seen comments from cstanton on Redskins Insider and Sports Bog. He or she is around.

Just not commenting here I guess. Tom put an APB out for him on RI.

What's up with King? Doesn't look like the same guy whose fights I have watched on youtube.

Posted by: StanleyCap | November 3, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

I just like the Carlson/Alzner pairing. They may not be the best pair (or certainly individual) on any given night, but their teamwork and communication is just there.

Neuvy appeared to overplay it.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | November 3, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy was pulled out of position on that goal. Not all on him but he can't push so far out of the net. This is at least the second goal I remember off the top of my head where he has done that.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 3, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

I'll be glad when these Leaf's get TIRED!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 3, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

@zmega, King fighting Orr hopefully keeps Orr away from any from any of our skilled players, call it prevenative medicine. Guys like Orr, while not always dirty, start looking for trouble at some point. King did his job by fighting, and just by being in the game. By the way, Orr is perhaps the best overall fighter in the league, King hanging in there and not losing shows how tough he is.

Side note, Fehr is terrible. Looks like he doesn't care out there.

Posted by: Fletch22 | November 3, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Same old story this year Caps fans ...Can OV learn to shorten his shifts ...NOT cause its all me me me for OV But I guess you can play 65 sec shifts when you dont back check.... Dont worry OV you will have lots of time to rest in the POST season

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | November 3, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

How is it our guy gets his stick slashed into the 5th row and there is no call but we tap someone in the leg and get called? We just can't buy a call sometimes.

@Fletch22. Even if that is true, which I don't buy, Hendricks can do the same thing and can also contribute during play. King is a waste of a jersey each game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 3, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Steckel and Gordon should go before Fehr.

Brian Fahey is the best we can do? I would rather get a look at Joe Finley.

Posted by: StanleyCap | November 3, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Overall, the Caps played well in their d-zone but on the goal, somebody was way out of position besides just Neuvirth.

I still haven't seen the replay but I think it was Bradley who checked a guy on the boards but not before he could poke the puck out to a wide open man in the slot.

@icehammer, you're saying Hendricks can fight Orr? That's insane. Why is King a waste of Jersey? He just did his job, which is more than can be said for some other guys on this team.

@Fletch he can lose a fight just like King did. How is he a waste of a jersey? Hendricks can play and he is in the press box. King isn't even being physical in the games he plays (4 hits in 4 games going into tonight and Hendricks has 19 in 11 games). Hendricks also has 9 blocked shots, King has none. King also has no take aways and two giveaways where Hendricks has 4 takeaways and no giveaways. Hendricks has fought B.J. Crombeen and while he lost he still went after him and got a good shot in on him before his jersey went over his head on a punch. Hendricks can fight enough to occupy the other teams tought guy when he gets bored (which is what you say King's job is) but also brings something to the game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 3, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Highlight reel save by Gustavsson on Backie's shot. Replay showed it hit his stick.

Posted by: Fletch22 | November 3, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

meh... that happens sometimes... the goalie just threw his stick out and got lucky.

Backstrom could have done better but it's good to see them creating that opportunity.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 3, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

From my untrained eye, MOST of the stick-work stuff Semin does qualifies as "stupid and/or unnecessary." He's just so insanely good at that lifting and poking stuff that 9 times out of 10 it actually works. That 10th time, however, some small positioning change or a player who zigs when 28 expects him to zag puts him in obvious jeopardy.

And to be fair, he's also clearly getting wiser in picking his spots.

Well, this is one way to continue to cement a team's PK improvement . . .

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 3, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Well the Ovie/Semin/Backs line has not exactly lit up the board with goals tonight. BB will separate them again if they don't watch it.

Posted by: caraveli | November 3, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

@icehammer, i'm a big Hendricks fan as well, but King serves a completely different purpose when fighting. By the way, I don't think Hendricks should see the PB, as there are other people who could stand to spend a few games up there.

I fault BB for King's perceived failures, because when he was traded for, all the talk was about how he could play and they would develop and mold him to be a better player. I don't look for takeaways or blocked shots from the 4th line, I look for energy, fights if needed and defensive responsibility (his +/- rating is even). His hit count should be higher, no doubt about it. That falls under BB's job, but he doesn't demand anyone to consistently finish checks.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 3, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

@Fletch. I agree about what to look for from a 4th line guy I was just adding the extra stats to show he wasn't giving them anything even the non-traditional 4th things. BB may not force guys to finish their checks but when (on a per game basis not penalizing King for so few games played) he is getting out hit by guys like Green and Stecks. Also King made a real half hearted effort on that 2nd goal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 3, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

I may be the biggest Shultz supported here but that one was on him. Off the faceoff there was clearly going to be an issue and he did his job and started backing up. The problem is he back up toward the wall away from the middle and left it wide open for the Leafs to blast through.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 3, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

who played last night?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 3, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin made several severely lazy plays down the stretch of regulation and into OT before he drew that penalty.

Part of that is the long shifts wearing on him.

Part is a lack of urgency, particularly in the D-zone.

Sloppy play and defensive breakdowns gave a point to Toronto.

Steckel is a pylon in the neutral zone and Schultz/Green looked bad tonight.

Ovechkin's long shifts and defensive unawareness were issues late.

We should've scored more but we shouldn't have given up as much as we did either.

They need some motivation. They need to put games together more consistently and they need more of a sense of urgency. They got lucky pulling this one out. Talent AND heart is what it will take to go all the way.

Boudreau needs to use the reality of the bench and lack of playing time as a motivator for some of these guys.

Personally I thought Laich looked pretty bad, but at least he was moving his feet...

Posted by: sca187 | November 3, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

These two-plus minute shifts are absolutely ridiculous in my eyes! BB and his assistants need to monitor ice time a little better IMHO. Why aren't we confident enough to roll four lines consistently??? Do we have perceived personnel issues? WTF?

Posted by: sca187 | November 3, 2010 10:05 PM | Report abuse

I think Semin was aiming for the goalie's mask on that slap shot in the shoot out. I guess he was not happy about being pulled off the top line.

Totally agree about Schultz failing to clear the crease.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:

Wow - I guess after playing solid defense throughout most of the first month - they were due for a clunker like that in the third. It happens. Games like these will happen - so have patience folks.

Kudos to Neuvy for standing tall in the shootout and wow Ovi scored in the shootout haha. Nice blast by Semin - that's how you end a shootout. All the fancy crap wasn't working so just stop - wind up and bang.

Solid 40 minutes and the third was a crapper. You live and learn but let's face it - to have something like that happen after a month of pretty decent hockey - great. This team is better defensively - just had an off 20 minutes tonight. Thank goodness it didn't cost them.

Bostom comes calling - time to nut up and make Thomas look human.

It's been a two point night. Ice Breakers Goal Shakers.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | November 3, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

OK, finally had a chance to watch that 1st goal.

I thought there was somebody else out of position.

Kulemin snuck in behind the play and it looks like King should've done something but King's man is out of the view on the other side of the ice.

Bradley was pressuring the guy along the boards and madea good effort to tie Kulemin up.

Notice Green on the entire sequence. First he drifts casually into the corner to double team a guy without the puck and then is caught in no man's land along the boards before we gain possession.

Neuvirth was out of position but the cause of the 2-on-1 in front of the net was Green being out of position in the first place. Kulemin never should've walked in like that. Erskine did what he could knowing his guy was behind him.

Bad showing for out top defensive line in this game, both of them. Schultz has to toughen up, at least a little, in front of his own net.

@habari: 'leafs' is the way it's said. dunno why, but it is.

and there's nothing wrong with the rest of the headline. it's not meant to be complete grammar

Caps is possessive. It should be Caps' win.

I did not follow the thread since I just finished watching DVR replay with FF.

1) DJ King nice fight but terrible d tonight.

2) Neuvy better than stats.

3) The one Tor goal when Ovi whiffed was due to bad ice.

4) Got to watch TSN on NHL Network. What can we say about Pierre Maguire. First Caps PP was Ovechkin's fault for stepping on Shenn's stick (which had been put between Ovi's skates). Xcheck call leading to 4th goal per PM very weak. Just one jab against the Caps after the next. Since I want to keep name calling off the blog here, let's just say McGuire is unprofessional. Could someone perform that job worse than he does? Yes. Theoretically.

OK. I've had it. That's enough. Haven't done this in awhile. Can't help myself.

Pierre McGuire is hereby assigned to the Doofus Brigade (cic Cheef), Troll Battalion (cic Larry David), Media Company (Co. M, cic Mike Milbury), 1st Platoon, with the rank of lieutenant. Assigned to McGuire as squad sergeants are Denis Potvin, as whiny as any announcer this side of Ken Harrelson, and Bobby "The Chief" Taylor. There's also an SI writer in this platoon, can't remember his name.

An honorary member of Company M of course is Don Cherry, Doofus Emeritus.

Grab a rifle, McGuire, drop down, and give us 20, you doofus.

tom and capt:
I'm just spending my first season away from the DC market, and God, do I miss Joe B and Locker. Nobody in the SE division can call a game anywhere nearly as well, and even the folks in the Canadian markets don't really do it for me.

Joe B's better than other PxP guys on Versus, too.
But alas, the atdhe link is rarely CSNW, and Caps game is better than no Caps game.
