Can't wait! Has anybody seen any schedule of events? Last year there was a fan day of some sort at training camp where Ted and Chris Clark held a town hall forum with fans, players signed autographs etc.

Unrelated: I hate to be the annoying guy who posts random, spammy garbage under a specific thread title, but I really just don't know what else to do or where to turn:
So I've been trying to get myself registered over on the Caps official message board FOREVER. Finally, finally I appear to be able to login, but the durrrn thing STILL won't allow me to modify my profile, respond to a thread, or start any new threads of my own. It almost seems as if the software over there is corrupt, or broken.
When I e-mail the "administrator," I get no response at all. ARRRRGGHHH! I want to get this figured out before the season starts! Can ANYONE who frequents that site help me?? Pleeeeeeeease? This is extremely frustrating! I just want to be able to use my account...
Sigh.
OK, well, sorry for the rant, and thanks!

This Caps team reminds me of the 82 Redskins (the Gibbs' team that won the first of his Super Bowls and rekindled the love affair between the city and the team). This city wants to love a local team. That team isn't going to be the Redskins anymore (Snyder has seen to that), the Wizards could do it but they don't seem to have the connection with fans like the Caps, the Nationals are... are... yeah, Gary Williams' teams aren't loveable, and then there is Georgetown... yeah, two more tournament wins last year and the city was their's. The Caps just have It.

Matt, I'd love to see that.

@ NoCountry - try e-mailing capsmanager@washcaps.com. Also, per a pinned thread at the top of the Talk About Caps Hockey forum, you won't be allowed to start threads in either of the main forums until you have 100 posts. But the other features should be working...I'm not sure as I'm no longer registered there.

@Tarik
Good stuff on WaPo Live! I still have my concerns about Clark too, whether it be a mental or physical barrier he still has to overcome. Hopefully he'll work it out during camp...Like BB said, "it'll be like signing a pretty good free agent", if he's 100 percent and able to contribute like in the past.
Keep up the good work!

Hey guys, I am doing a term paper on the economic hurdles an NHL franchise has to deal with while being attached to an American market vs a Canadian market...ie, Caps vs Leafs. If anyone knows of any good links to gain some information on this topic it would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.---I figured if I have to do a 20 page term paper that it might as well be on a subject I am passionate about!!!

I am not sure what that is, but I am a little frightened. All I know is that if that kid hopes to date, he better not plan to go clubbin' when he grows up!

has anyone played the NHL 09 demo -- the league idea w/ be a player mode seems awesome
Posted by: capsgary | September 5, 2008 12:01 PM | Report abuse
@BILL HOULDER since he's not with a team currently, are we trading those players to his wife to do yardwork? Must be a central div fan (what, detroit got an expansion team? I'm sure they'll suck).

Phil B,
I did a paper on the economics of free agency vs home grown players. I'll look through the sites I went to and see what I can do.

@capsgary
I haven't played the demo yet, but I just bought an xbox specifically for the game. The "MMO mode" is going to be amazing.

Sundin. What to make of that guy, eh?
M: "No, you can't trade me, i won't waive it..."
GM: "So you're coming back then?"
M: "Um, i don't know... I'm not sure, i can't make up my mind...maybe, other teams are really interested, you know."
GM: "So why didn't you just let us trade you so we could get something in return, if you like us so much?"
M: "Well, I thought it was obvious that I'm a d***."
The Leafs will never win another cup.

Good morning Capitals Insiders.
Hanna is hitting and I'm still stuck at work. Not excited about that, but at least I'm not outside. Thank you Gavlegirl for the info on Backstrom, it will be interesting to see what kind of shape he returns in. Training camp is soon... thank god.
Looking forward to seeing some of you commenters at the rookie game.

Dave:
Thanks for the well wishes. It didn't seem that bad - I actually had to go out in the AM and driving home on 66 was less than fun, but it did not seem that bad when I was at home. Having said that, we ran up to Blockbuster last night and it was a mess! They had more ceiling leaks than I could count, ceiling tiles that were buldging or had collapsed, buckets on the ground, soaked carpet, sections of the store taped off, etc.. So maybe it was worse than I thought?!?

From "Top breakout players in the Eastern conference" on www.nhl.com (9/6/08):
Every team has a player or two that are up and down between the American Hockey League and the NHL during their first season or two.
While these players may not make the biggest impact that way, it provides a way to get acclimated to the League. These players learn from veterans how to conduct themselves on and off the ice.
Even though they aren't the best players at the time, they can develop into future stars, plus a season spent battling for a spot builds character.
The following are 15 Eastern Conference players -- one from each team -- who played between 15 and 60 games in the NHL last season and are ready to make the jump.
...
Quintin Laing, Washington Capitals -- At 29, Laing was too old to qualify for rookie status last season, but he performed well in his first significant NHL action of his eight-year professional career.
Laing had attended Washington's training camp on a tryout contract, but earned a full-time deal and was assigned to the Hershey Bears of the AHL, and he reached the big club in November. Aside from a five-day demotion back to Hershey in early December, he remained with the Capitals for the rest of the season.
In 20 games in Hershey, the left wing had 2 goals and a plus-9 rating; in limited duty in 39 games with Washington he had 6 points and a plus-4 rating, and he was a key penalty killer, playing 2:50 per game shorthanded. While Laing didn't play in Washington's memorable seven-game playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers, he is on coach Bruce Boudreau's radar and figures to see penalty killing duty this season.

So I find this interesting. NHL.com has Laing as a potential breakout player but yet we do not even mention him being on the team. Do they know something we don't know or vice versa?

My guess is that NHL.com looked at his playing time the second half of last season, and the fact that Cooke (a PKer) left, and figured he'd somehow get on the ice.
They likely failed to realize that with Nylander and Clark (in theory) healthy that means that Gordon, who has a much larger contract and is more valuable on the PK, may not even dress regularly.
It's somewhat disappointing that they didn't highlight Fehr, who DID play in the playoffs and played well and has been on the AHL/NHL bubble for a couple seasons now. Even tho he is a young guy, could this be his last shot to make an impact here in DC before someone else jumps ahead of him on the organizational depth chart?

Since everybody is hitting at MY kids, here is something about somebody elses kids:
Nylander has 2 sons that play youth hockey locally, they are usually THE best player or certainly top 3 on any team they play for. THIS season however, they are NOT ROSTERED on any team as of yet. Local youth hockey parents will tell you that teams were picked back in May and have been playing league games already for a couple of weeks.
Suspicious? Insiders say that it is just "because they are still in Sweden". I'm not buying it, though. Missing school AND league games is a big deal and those that know about this stuff will tell you that I (Sarah Palin) am right to be suspicious about a trade involving Nylander.
Posted by: Sarah Palin | September 8, 2008 9:43 AM | Report abuse
Sarah, Rumor is you told McPhee that Nylander's salary needed to be cut. That he was waste!
