Assuming his great start continues, I think Semin should really be an all star.

He's got my vote on this election day.

Seriously, no Theodore?
OK, OK, I can't keep a straight face on that one myself.

Posted by: matucker | November 4, 2008 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Wooo! We gotta get them all into the game.

Posted by: _jordan | November 4, 2008 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Awesomesauce! That will be very cool if we can get all three of them into the game! :-)

No sexy lumberjack on the ballot?

Posted by: _stevo | November 4, 2008 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Excellent. I hope that we can pull together and vote all 3 of them onto the team!

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | November 4, 2008 3:04 PM | Report abuse

omg ew erskine is a sad excuse for caps hockey and just hockey in general. seriously people what do you see!?

anyways this year let's not ovie escape being on the starting line-up. caps fans vote for ovie, semin, and green, let's stomp out those habs and those pens!

Too bad Backstrom had a bad start or else we would have 4 players in the all star game.

Backstrom looks lost, I think it's chemistry and point to Nylander & Clark, when they were out,Backs & the team played better.

Posted by: Cheef | November 4, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

This is for the srarting lineup. The league or coaches picks the rst of the team.

Posted by: lylewimbledon | November 4, 2008 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, was pretty stupid of me to think that I could actually TALK to someone today. I think the whole US has taken off today as some kind of undeclared national holiday or something.

Posted by: Greg S. | November 4, 2008 3:50 PM | Report abuse

can DC have a coordinated effort to get our Caps players the votes they need to make the all-star roster?? i am sick of Dipsburgh and all of the Cindy love.

Kitty,
Where do I send the invoice? You owe me one new keyboard after I spit my tea all over my old one after the "sucked moldy green donkeys" line.

Cheef

I would tend to agree, though there has been some improvement. He's come close a few times. I'm really hoping that he and Ovie break out tonight. If they do, that'll be 3 scoring lines

Posted by: Greg S. | November 4, 2008 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Is there some sort of election going on today or something? I see all these non=hockey people walking around with "I voted" stickers on. How did they get to vote early? I thought the voting started on 11/12?

Posted by: Greg S. | November 4, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Today should be national holiday - come on every four years - seriously.

Posted by: lylewimbledon | November 4, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I was being a little humorous. Emphasis on "little".

Posted by: Greg S. | November 4, 2008 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Broduer is out 3-4 months with surgery.

This is a major blow to the Devils. I absolutely hate watching the Caps play the Devils just because of how good he is.

His loss, is everyone but the Devils gain...thats for sure.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 4, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

BWAHAHAHA @ DaveUKCapsFan. I have learned not to be drinking ANYTHING when reading this blog, LOL!

Posted by: irockthered | November 4, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Why is Mike Green on the ballot? As PJ Stock said on last Saturday's HNIC broadcast "I love Mike Green, just not without the puck" and this could also be said for Alexander Semin.

Posted by: SabresFanInDC | November 4, 2008 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Not that I am happy Marty was injured. Quite the contrary. My husband still blames the Cap's loss to the Devils on the fact that I was "too excited" to finally get to see Marty play in person.

However, maybe this will mean someone else will win the Vezina this season. Guess it also means there will definitely be a goalie posiiton up for grabs for the All Star game.

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 4, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

To be fair, if you spend 4 hours in line to vote, its not much of a holiday. But, I think that's a different blog.

I'll miss the game tonight. Too many election parties to go to. And I don't think I'll be allowed to switch one of the TVs to "check in" on how the Caps are doing. At least not without getting covered in drinks.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | November 4, 2008 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Boredom killer- how about score of tonight's game and goal scorers?

Posted by: lylewimbledon | November 4, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

While I am always hopeful of a Caps W, I feel pretty good about tonights game. If the Caps don't come out tonight and take the game to Ottawa early...well, I don't really want to finish that thought.

Anyhow, I think the Caps are going to continue their dominance of Ottawa and win 4-2 with goals from OV, Kozlov, Green, and Laich. 2 assists for Backstrom.

Now watch Brashear score 3 instead. :-)

Posted by: Jeff_ | November 4, 2008 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom, Laich, Feds- Caps win 3-2...maybe overtime.

Jeff_

Maybe even a Howe Hat trick.

Funny thing about that. Gordie had only two (Tocchet, Shannahan and Iginla have more) and wasn't the first to do it (Harry Cameron did it in 12/26/1917 - yes, that's Boxing Day), yet the fight, assist and a goal "hattrick" is named after him.

Wow - read the article that Katie posted by Pierre LeBrun (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3680571&name=lebrun_pierre). Can't say that I agree, especially with most of the following:

"So, let's recap the personal rivalries between the Caps and Pens and determine who would win if they were to duke it out on the ice:

Ovechkin versus Malkin: I'm taking Ovechkin. I think he could throw 'em pretty good if he wanted to.

Crosby versus Semin: We'll take Sid the Kid. He'd use his tree-trunk legs to wrestle Semin to the ice.

Mario Lemieux versus Ted Leonsis: Not a very fair fight, but who knows? Maybe Ted has a move or two we don't know about.

Ray Shero versus George McPhee: Hey, Shero grew up with his dad's Broad Street Bullies, right?

Michel Therrien versus Bruce Boudreau: The Pens' coach is a street brawler."

There has also been a lot of debate here about whether or not there really is an issue between Ovie and Malkin. Well, according to LeBrun:

"as some of you know, the real hatred is between Ovechkin and fellow Russian Evgeni Malkin because of a reported personal dispute."

So there ya have it! Anyone have the details? Does it go back to the issue with Malkin's agent?

Posted by: Boo- | November 4, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

@ bagasome,

Ok, I gave in to see what you had. Nothing original. Now, LEAVE US ALONE!

Posted by: WCAPS1 | November 4, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

It really sucks for Brodeur... we can't really want him out if we love hockey (although I think he was one of the reasons we lost to the devils).

Anyway... I would like to see Fehr more on the ice.

I'm not so sure about Flash on second line... he showed some nice moves but... I don't know... he still seems too much "lightweight" to me. I missed the last 3-4 games so I'm probably wrong, if he's up on second line there must be a reason... right?

Posted by: mauree | November 4, 2008 5:48 PM | Report abuse

@mauree,

He's looked really good lately, actually. He's been clanking a shot or two off the post every game. He could have big numbers this year if he keeps it up.

This coming from a guy that was anti-Flash last year.

Posted by: _jordan | November 4, 2008 6:10 PM | Report abuse

I'll take your word for it jordan - my worry is that that line might be a push-over, no one can really fore-check. I'd be more comfy with Flash with Bradley, no?

I finally got a chance to watch the last game highlights.... oh...my...god...

Morrison was just standing there the first two goals... and Green the third goal... our D was just terrible, so static... I can see why BB was furious.

I'm goin' out on a limb here, but I am guessing that Johnny is not Heatley's best bud ...

Posted by: Boo- | November 4, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

I just randomly looked for the team with the least goals against this season so far. The Minnesota Wild. Looking at their coaching staff I see that they have three assistant coaches. One of them was a defenseman in the NHL.

Then I look at the Capitals: two assistant coaches. Both were centers.

Why is this exactly what I expected to see?

Posted by: austinsteve | November 4, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

OK I have officially seen enough of JT, after the poke save on the break away and the amazing save on the 5 on 3 Johnny has earned the #1 spot on this team!

Posted by: majiksea | November 4, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

So 3 to 0 or 4 to 0 with Josie in the net?? I say at least 3

Posted by: majiksea | November 4, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

The Canadiens and Lightning have the second lowest GA. They also have 3 assistants.
One each is also a former defenseman....

Oh, wait there's a hockey game on.

Posted by: austinsteve | November 4, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if I've ever publicly declared my love for Brent Johnson. But I do. Honestly. Somewhere in my heart, right next to the place where Brads lives and across the way from Brooks, there's a spot for Johnny.
Let's go boys! Make this a good PP!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 4, 2008 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Why didn't Nyls shoot that rather than take it out of our offensive zone?

Posted by: Boo- | November 4, 2008 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Brash averaging 1:11 minutes for his 3 shifts who does he think he is ao? more lack of discipline

Posted by: wendel2 | November 4, 2008 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Well at least the PK is looking better, and Johnny is playing well.

Posted by: Boo- | November 4, 2008 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Alex's cutting to center ice, and shooting the puck between the D's legs, brought back some good memories.
And I designate Johnson our #1.

Posted by: Max23 | November 4, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Majik, you'd have seen enough even if Johnson had allowed 9 goals.

Johnny had a good period, but maybe Heatley's having flashbacks about killing people or something to whiff and hit a post.

Posted by: Whitermage | November 4, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

20minutes and 2 of our forwards have recorded a hit....still lacking any real urgency to get the puck or punish the opposition

Posted by: wendel2 | November 4, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

my thoughts on this period:

1) Brent - awesome saves. But I knew that of him already, his weakness is being a wall the whole 60 minutes. I'm praying he'll finally deliver.

2) The Caps: the talent is unbelievable, no question about it... BUT... I'm not recognizing the Caps I used to love... the dominance through sacrifice. We can't stay in their zone consistently. Ottawa is winning most man-on-man battles.

3) I'm so happy I finally go to see a game online!

4) LETS GO CAPS! (but wake up please and play like you mean it)

Posted by: mauree | November 4, 2008 8:18 PM | Report abuse

@Boo

Dude,,,I was yelling at the tv saying the same thing...please shoot Nyls!

Posted by: robblahs | November 4, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

The three players I would most like to buy a beer, Brads, Johnny, and Laich.

Just one question. Can we please stop giving the puck to Ottawa? Guys, we are not rocking the red tonight. We are the team in white. Just saying.

Kozlov obviously did not mind getting called out so much. Better increase his play, because right now he is in line to get Ottawa's hardhat award.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 4, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Great play from Semin to Flash.

And Whiter, I have never been a cheerleader for Johnny. He is no more and no less than a quality backup, but he makes JT look like a dogs dinner! JT is in the bottom 5 of NHL goalies, even counting those teams rotating 2 goalies, just look at the stats. I don't need to say JT sucks, he says it every time he gets in net!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 4, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

lol Miked3

I'm not liking what I'm seeing, despite the result. Ottawa is pushing us around. The Caps have big guys, but it's not showing. We're not clearing the crease, we're always late to the puck. The way we can't get out of our zone is ridiculous: we can't just bring it out with passes, we're just trying to clear it, and can't even do that!

Say what you want of Brashear but he and Ovie are the only one showing some grit tonight. Hockey is a contact sport for crying out loud...

Sorry for the negativity...

Having said that, the call on Ovie wasn't right, it was a legit hit.

Majik, I wasn't saying you were a BJ supporter, as much as I was saying you hate Theodore and either a) want him to suck, b) you don't support him, and could care less if he plays well, or c) Don't realize that both goalies are pretty comparable and play different styles, and our defense has been terrible. I'm going with d) Both B and C.

Posted by: Boo- | November 4, 2008 9:09 PM | Report abuse

White guy, look at the shots on goal! I would say it is our defense, but it just is not so. JT is not facing a bunch more shots on goal, he just lets in soft goals and has done so since the first game. Want him to suck?? Why I've been a season ticket holder for more than 10 years. How long have you had your season tickets? The best thing in the world would have been if he was Patrick Roy the 2nd! I want this team in teh playoffs, I want a cup! The fact is that JT is in the bottom 5 of goalies playing in the league with more than 5 games played and he lets in VERY soft goals through a giant 5 hole and every player in the NHL knows about it and shots for it. What the hell kind of STYLE is it where you let in soft 5 hole goals?

both the hooking penalties were pretty stupid as well, neither really had any effect on the play at all, just a Caps player sticking his stick out for no reason, but Semin's assist makes up for his.

Feds is doing great on D, besides that one penalty he is on fire. best player on the ice I would say. Johnny is looking solid. 34 of 35 saves for him. we need a new #1 goalie when the back-up is outshining you, its bad

wendel2 I agree on Clark, not on Brash.

Morrison was terrible. I never saw him playing so bad. Schultz was terrible, but I saw him playing that bad before. I'd sit this two out next game. Bring up Sloan again.

Posted by: mauree | November 4, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

You seem to root AGAINST Theodore, is what I'm saying. I'd love to have season tickets, but I don't have 1000 dollars when I have to work and go to school full time, and for ten years, I'd have had to get them when I was 12. I don't care if you like Theo, I don't care if you don't, but you are throwing him under the bus when the whole team has been playing like trash.

I don't care who is in the net, as long as we win. And I've explained the styles of the goaltenders before, and you must have had your fingers in your ears(or in front of your eyes). Either way, we're both Caps fans, I just get frustrated when it seems people actively say players on our team suck, but let's be honest, Theodore will be fine, and he's been improving. one good game does not make a season, but I agree that Johnny deserves more playing time if he keeps playing like this. My concern with him is the last time he had starters time, he struggled.

Also, Dany Heatley is one dirty stick swinging murdering hockey player.

Not surprising that Morrison and Green where on the ice when the goal was scored. Those two should not be paired together again.

Posted by: kovachs | November 4, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Right now, I do not see the fire, drive, determination, and heart that this team had all last year after Gabby took over, especially down the stretch. It's like two completely different teams. They are regressing quickly and a turn around needs to happen soon...more like now.

They got a point...so what? Big deal. It should've been 2. It should've been 2 against New Jersey, Calgary, and Phoenix. If they continue to play like this, the Hurricanes, Rangers, and Lightning will all walk into Verizon and embarass this team.

Posted by: badkarma723 | November 4, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Telling stat:

PP:

Ott 0-5
Caps 0-1

1 power play. They had a 2 man advantage for almost 2 minutes and a 4 minute PP. A little fair play from the refs could have swung things in our favor. I saw a high stick on Semin and a moving pick both at the end of the game. Not saying we would have won, but it could have turned the momentum.

another goal in the last minute of a period. surprise, surprise. i hope our guys had fun playing 50 minutes in our zone. johnson was awesome, ovie tried too hard again and had nothing to show for it, schultz was abominable, green and mo continue to play like crap, erskine and juice couldnt get the puck out to save their lives, feds was good, the semin flash nyls line was good, i dont think clark controlled the puck for one second, backstrom continued to play okay i guess....the last 124 minutes of caps hockey ive been treated to one goal, reminds me of 05-06

Again I will harken back to OVs comments and say the missing ingredient is QL and yes I know he was not the most skilled player on the ice even in the AHL, but if you ask OV which player in the NHL has really impressed him and he says QL, that has to say something about the guy. I just think the heart and drive he gave the team are missing this year. He always played above his ability and other players emulated him.

Q for All Please: (maybe I have been asleep)

What has happened to MO?
Another bad night (-2) in a bad season.

I thought that his 1.975 mil sal. was worth it but now...he does not look the same or worth the $...any thoughts.

These guys are not playing like a team. Two extremes: Johnson (great) - Schultz (awful). Things do not look good for the next five games. What is so difficult as a fan is to watch a Caps team that does not appear qualified to be playing in the NHL.

marshmallows.A lot of size but no physical presence from the forwards. Semin is on the precipe of super stardom. backstrom is killing my fantasy team. Johnny clearly out played Jose, but also got lucky a few times. Better than buffalo but not good enough.

I think the Caps need 5 our ot 6 points from this homestand or things are going to be looking pretty awful. Beating NY on Saturday would be a huge statement and a great time to turn things around...but like I said before, if they play like they did tonight and Saturday, the Rangers will blow them out of the water.

Start Johnny in net on Thursday against Carolina. He deserves it.

Plus, we're trying to win.

If I were to be driving and I wrecked, and someone in my car died, I'd be in jail for involuntary manslaughter. A spade is a spade. If the Caps acquired him, I would find another team to root for out of principal. Irresponsibility is no excuse when someone dies.

You think it's time to press the Panic Button yet?

I would. Tonight was really bad, we didn't even deserve one point, that was all Brent.

They were all over us. I almost didn't recognize the Caps... many D got their raise, it's time to prove what you're worth.

And... I'm sorry Steve, but I'm going to put Green on "trial" again. He should be leading the team.

The refereeing tonight was a steaming pile of horse hockey.

* Bad calls against us.
* Missing calls against them.

The Power Play looked really good.

And Brent Johnson was BEAST out there tonight. Oh my GOD! He stopped 42 of 44 shots against him? WOW!

Put him in goal on Thursday!!!

Re: Heatley...

Second degree vehicular homicide, 3 years' probation, and 150 speeches in exchange for the life of a teammate because he hit a wall with his car so hard that the impact ejected them both from the car, and split the car in half?

No thanks. He can stay with the Senators.

And he got off easy.

Heatley pays for his mistake every day. Snyder's family forgave him, I think its kind of weak to bring it up as often as people do.

We were darn lucky to escape with a point. Johnson was awesome, Semin is starting to get too cute but still amazes, Ovechkin still does not look like the same player we saw last season.
