Update on Morrisonn

Defenseman Shaone Morrisonn did not practice today after suffering what appeared to be a shoulder injury late in the first period of last night's 4-1 victory over Carolina.

He went to the doctor this morning and is still undergoing tests for what the team is calling an "upper body" injury. Morrisonn won't be available for tomorrow's game against Tampa Bay, a team official said. I imagine that probably makes him doubtful for Saturday's game with Florida, too.

It's a pretty big blow for the Caps and Mike Green, who has thrived with Morrisonn as his partner. Morrisonn is averaging 20:16 per game, the third highest total on the team among defensemen behind Tom Poti and Green.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said he doesn't anticipate calling up a replacement from Hershey, and will likely turn to Steve Eminger. The Caps, interestingly, are 12-5-1 with Eminger in the lineup.

Anybody know if game days/times are set for the playoffs yet, or do they wait for the seeds to be determined?

I've got business travel next Thurs night --> Friday all day. Part of me hopes we get the 8th seed so I don't miss any hockey.

Now begins Steve Eminger's shocking charge to win the Conn Smythe trophy.

Posted by: old time hockey | April 2, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Three thoughts:

1. Unbelievably awesome win last night... what a great game. 2 more games. I will be sending negative vibes to Philly, Carolina, and Boston tonight. Huge games.

2. I thought Semin had his best game as a cap last night. I saw a couple of big hits which is so uncharacteristic but must just completely fire up the rest of the team. He also had a great game back-checking. And of course the goal. But I really think the hits and back-checking showed how much he really does care even if he doesn't show it all the time. (In the interest of full disclosure, he did have another dumb hooking penalty... he'll learn eventually I guess).

3. 12-5-1 with Eminger in the lineup... who would have thought... Seems like more fuel for the "what the heck is going on with Eminger" debate this year. Is it really as simple as he's just the odd man out and he's not left/right handed? (I forget which he is). Either way, I hope he stands up to the pressure of these next two games. It would go a long way for his confidence and for the confidence of the team in him.

Go CAPS!! (AND DOWN WITH PHILLY, CAROLINA, BOSTON, AND OTTAWA)!!

BB will be on NHL Live in a bit, for those that have XM or the NHL Ch.

Posted by: H23 | April 2, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse

I don't care what Eminger's record is in the past - we need him to be 2-0 in these next two games. Step up to the plate boy, now is your time to shine... at least sparkle a few times!

Like someone said on the previous blog - keep it up at the VC - I am sure the players feed off your energy... keep it up!!!

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Memo to Eminger-just stay back and let Green go wild.

Posted by: dave | April 2, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are 12-5-1 WITH Eminger in the lineup, not BECAUSE he's in the lineup. It's just a coincidence.

Posted by: E | April 2, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

I gotta think it is a separated shoulder or torn rotator cuff. This may sideline him for the rest of the year if not longer. They should bring up Lepisto from Hershey, scratch Brashear, then have Emminger in there as well.

Posted by: JS | April 2, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

I heard they may start a cardboard cutout of Mo in place of Eminger

Posted by: Bob | April 2, 2008 1:09 PM | Report abuse

On Emminger filling in for Morrisonn:

It is wonderful that the Capitals are a well constructed team with depth. they have been able to withstand injury and man games lost that would have and has sunk other teams. The character of the team as well as GMGM and the coach need to be commended for that. Losing Nylander and Clark has been pretty much an after thought to this team. Semin and others missed significant time also.

No matter how this season ends up. The Caps have heart.

Posted by: Caps423 | April 2, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Why don't they just put Laing on defense... or Feds...

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Erskine picked up Shane's ice time last night and I thought that was the key to the game. If he sucks like usual we probably would have lost.

Posted by: eric | April 2, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

I just found out I have two extra tickets to tomorrow's game (another Red Out!!!). I would prefer to trade them to someone who has extras for Saturday's game, because I don't have those (I split tickets with someone), rather than sell them randomly. Let me know if anyone is interested -- they're lower level at the end the Caps shoot twice.

Posted by: Scott in Shaw | April 2, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

its not that big of a blow considering we played 2 periods without him and won. it is good how he allows green to jump up in the play. the bigger concern is the steve emminger is replacing him.

Hey Papa Schultz, I didn't know you taught your half slap shot to OV. He added a twist to it though, didn't he - quite literally! The Ovechkin spinning half slap shot. Thanks for teaching that to him Papa Panzer Faust Führer Schultz!

Posted by: BearsWoooo | April 2, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

JS

You don't scratch a forward for a defense man. If Brash gets scratched it will be in favor of Laing.

I vote separated shoulder over rotator cuff. It's difficult to tear your rotator cuff with a compression of the shoulder unless a bone at the cuff broke and helped tear the tendons.

If it's a separation, we have to hope for dislocation or separation of type 1, as broken bone or separation of type 2-6 typically require surgery.

Hey Tarik, tell your graphics people that they did a nice job with those graphics at the bottom front of the Sports section today. Very cool, pass it along.

Posted by: Caps Fan in DC | April 2, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

@FFS Enough

The day/times for the playoff series aren't set until all of the matchups are determined (to look at building availability). That said, I imagine the playoffs will open on a Thurs-Sat or Fri-Sun schedule (unless building availability calls for Wed-Fri matchups).

The Verizon center is booked on Saturday the 12th (Wizards) so if the Caps were to make the postseason and were the 3 seed it would likely be a Fri-Sun home package.

If they were to sneak in as an 8 seed it would then obviously be dependent on the club they play. Mellon Arena has no booking conflict over the Wed to Sun timeframe, so who knows. Centre Bell, on the other hand, has conflicts due to concerts on both the 11th and 12th so some interesting scheduling may have to take place there (perhaps a Thurs-Sun opening set).

Posted by: SA_Town | April 2, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow, this is some interesting stuff:

http://www.nhl.com/news/playoffs/updated_scenarios.html

Go to the 3rd page.

Everybody is rooting for Tampa Bay tonight.

Boston, and Philly can clinch with a win and no points from Carolina tonight.
Rangers can clinch if Carolina gets no points tonight.

I did not know this - that would leave 3 teams left fighting for 2 spots... Carolina, Washington, and Ottawa... that is IF Carolina does not get any points tonight.

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

The loss of Mo last night was bad, but what helped ease the pain was CAR spending most of the game in the penalty box.

I will be very curious to see BB's lines for Thurs. I'm anticipating:
Green/Jurcina
Poti/Schultz
4/44

Though, Green with Emmy could be a strong pairing based on their experience together in Hershey.

Why couldn't Emmy use his Erskine voodoo doll instead of his ShMo?

Posted by: FFS Enough | April 2, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

I guess what they are saying is that if the Canes lose tonight in Regulation - the most points they could get is 92... and BOS and PHI would have 93 (with a win). So, that would lock them in because even if the Caps caught up to BOS or PHI, they would have more points than the Canes and win the division...

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Eminger plays hard and isn't afraid dump someone when it is needed. He needs to be paired with a veteran like Poti to cover up for any mistakes he may make. Speaking of Poti, who gets paired with Green now? Erskine seemed to be paired with Green a lot last night. I wonder if that is going to stay the same.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 2, 2008 1:24 PM | Report abuse

How about they all lose - Philly, Boston, and the Canes... that would be nice!!! very nice!!!

TARIK

I watched Coach B's conference today. I was surprised by his answer about Eminger when you asked him why he hasn't played more. He said I don't know. Do you think that's him not wanting to comment on Eminger in a negative way or do you think it's something bigger like having to do with GMGM?

Great question by the way.

With him in the game, caps have won 69% of the possible points.

BB's record overall has been 65% of the possible points.

Going back to the second comment about Semin stepping things up, I agree. He had an amazing game. I beleive it was Cooke's goal, Semin actually took the guy out infront on the net (w/o tripping him and drawing a penalty) which left the guy open for the goal. Really great work.

I suppose the playoffs could start on Tuesday the 8th but that would be kind rough for teams who play on Sunday and for those who play on Saturday but may not know exactly where they will be heading until Sundays games shake out. Perhaps they'll start with Tues-Thurs and Wed-Fri matchups. I can't remember from past years, do they normally start on the Tuesday following or do they start later in the week? Anyone know?

+111,

I just answered as to why he didn't answer the question or why he said "I don't know"... never said anything about why the question was asked... that's Tarik's job, not mine.

BB does not sleep, he watches scores, he has to be prepared... I really think the "past" is not really on his mind. They have a situation, and they have to deal with it - and they are!

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Does this sound right?:

If the Caps win out, they get in if:

Carolina loses once (either in reg or OT)
OR
Ottawa loses once in regulation (they would be tied for points but Caps would own tiebraker in head to head)
OR
Philadelphia loses twice, one of which can be an OT loss (Caps would own tiebraker for wins)
OR
Boston loses twice (same scenario as Phi as they have identical records)
OR
Rangers lose 3 times-one of which can be an OT loss (caps would own wins tiebraker)

Dave, that is about right. Just figure in 94 points. If any team (except Carolina) gets 94 points, the Caps are in the playoffs. Caps own all the tie breakers, except for the Canes. Carolina can only get 3 more points if we win out in order for us to win the division.

WHAT A GAME! I can't ever remember the phone booth looking so excited. The Caps played like a TEAM with heart and desire.

Go Lightining!

Posted by: Leeguru | April 2, 2008 1:59 PM | Report abuse

This will be long-winded...

Assuming we go 2-0 (not easy but necessary for us to make it), we need any of:
Boston to go 1-1-1
Ottawa to go 1-1
Carolina to go 1-0-1
Philly to go 1-1-1

My thoughts on chances of those teams not making it:
Boston: 20% chance of going 1-1-1 or worse
Ottawa: 50% chance
Carolina: 20% chance
Philly: 30% chance

So... if we go 2-0, we'd make the playoffs 78% of the time. But what are the chances we go 2-0... I'd say 70% chance. So that's only 54%. Better than a coin flip.

Unfortunately for us, these teams don't play eachother much. The only game among these teams is Boston and Ottawa. If this is a 2 point game, it means either Ottawa loses and we're in or Boston loses and must go 1-0-1 (against NJ an Buf) for us to make it. If it's a 3 point game, it means either Ottawa loses and must go 0-0-1 (doesn't win outright against Tor) for us to make it or Boston loses and must go 1-1 elsewhere.

Then there's Philly, and we have to hope the Pens drop Philly by winning their 2 games (at least 1 in regulation).

Carolina... our only hope is that they lose tonight (regulation or overtime) because they're hopefully feeling tired and bad about themselves.

Posted by: TripDonkeys | April 2, 2008 2:00 PM | Report abuse

just think about it... Halpern could do more for the caps now as an opponent then he could when he was playing for them ...

Maybe to BB it is not a legitimate question. I'll do my best to reply without getting into the Erskine vs. Emmy debate.

Tarik has every right to ask the question, and we on the blog here can believe that he asked it for us. The truth of the matter is, to BB, that's a question that, even if he had an answer to, he would not tell us. Is BB going to divulge to the world Emmy's weaknesses? Hell no. Especially now that he's going to be playing regularly. Is he going to risk his job by calling out GMGM? Hell no.

So all that question really does is produce undue stress on a coach who does not need any more. Will Caps 6th-d-man-controversy sell the WP or WT more papers? no. Will the caps getting into the playoffs? HELL YES.

For the rest of this week, I want to hear local reporters ask BB the following questions:

"How awesome is ____. Isn't it great to be able to coach _____."

"Don't you think ____ deserves the ____ award?"

"Coach, the labels on these coors light bottles turn blue when the beer gets cold, how does that work?!"

"Coach, do you believe in bigfoot?"

We still have to win a game to get in... I think 3 points will do it for us... but, we shall see.

1. As happy as I am for myself :) and all Caps fans, I think we should all give a shout out to Ted.
2. I love that we don't have to worry about the team leaving DC anymore, and that our problems revolve around playing time.
3. Does anybody know contract status for BB and GMGM?
4. If the Caps keep winning and we keep selling out, would GMGM (with Ted's blessing) go over the cap?
5. Just so I know what happens if the Caps get only two more points? Can they still make it

1. Go Ted!
2. Tough decisions ahead with players
3. BB has zero contract, not sure about GMGM, but I think he is up too.
4. No need to go over the Cap, what did you have in mind?
5. Yes. We would need one of these things to happen. A. Philly loss out, B. Boston loss out or C. Carolina loss out.

Just wanted to say, if Caps win the next two and we won't get any help from hockey gods, we had a great season no matter what.

Caps beat or played on par with every top 5 team from any conference. They beat Montreal, Sabres, Boston, Sens, Pens, played on par with Detroit... The only team that really dominated them, Canes, was beated yesterday cleanly regardless of officiating. There's no way Caps could lose yesterday. Tables turned, now Caps are dominating Canes, and prove to that is a lot of whining WHAA WHAA coming from the Canes Country.

I love that sound! :) WHAA WHAA WHAA WHAA

Posted by: AP | April 2, 2008 2:39 PM | Report abuse

billd from prev post:
Yes, I'm aware my prediction for Philly of 2-1-0 gives them 95 points and a spot above us. My predictions in full are:

Canes: 2-0-0
Total: 94 points (44 wins) (3rd seed)

Sens: 1-1-0
Total: 95 points (43 wins) (6th seed)

Flyers: 2-1-0
Total: 95 points (42 wins) (7th seed)

Caps: 2-0-0
Total: 94 points (43 wins) (8th seed)

Bruins: 1-1-1
Total: 94 points (41 wins) (1st Tee)

We still get there if that happens Bill.

I make no apologies for shamelessly repeating my 1st Tee gag here again as 828 loved it so much this morning. Although I have refrained from repeating the "Tampa will hope to pee on Carolina's chips" line. Doh! Just said it then! :)

OV is the best player I have ever seen, maybe in any sport. If he doesnt win the Hart, the game should really take a look at how they define "valuable". To see him pump up the crowd when everyone was chanting MVP was great.

Backstrom is absolutely out of this world and should get serious consideration for the Calder, if not win it.

It was great to see the crowd and players give Bruce the applaud he deserved last night. You can see that his players genuinely respect him and that is why he has had such success. If we win the division, I believe he will win the Jack Adams. If not, the league can go to hell.

Last but certainly not least, and I know this is a bit farfetched but if the Caps win the Cup, they should make a movie about it. I will of course be playing myself in the movie. Cape guy will be played by harry potter. :) Kidding.

Anyways, hope to see everyone out tomorrow. Thanks to Super, I have a ticket and will be in attendance. Hopefully there will be the same buzz as last night.

@DaveUKCaps

So, if the 9th place team is "1st tee" does that mean LA or Tampa is starting the second nine (or as the Scots would say, the "inward nine").

I am a tad worried that the Caps could let up, especially if CAR loses tonight. Ideally, both teams will win against Tampa and then the Canes lose agaisnt FLA, leaving the Caps to know its win and you're in. They would have to be pumped for that.

Sucks about Mo. Here's hoping Eminger can step up and help with two more wins.

We are deep. We still have Eminger and Lepisto. Fedorov can also play d-man. He finished last season play d for Hitch, and he played d for Bowman.

In front Felishman has picked up his game, I think he looked good yesterday (and who wasn't?), Steckel will be back.

Tarik, what about Clark and Pothier?

I love that site, but it uses the extremely simplistic view that every game is a 50-50 toss up between the two teams. This assumption is clearly not a good one as the playoff bubble teams are playing their guts out while other teams at the very top and especially at the very bottom don't care nearly as much. So, I'll stick with my ~80% chance of us making the playoffs if we go 2-0. 98% is just overly inflated based on each other game being a simple coin flip.

@Dave UK Caps Fan
I like your proposed ending... You're probably about right. Under your ending though, Caps would be a 7th seed I think, because Ottawa would only have 94 points and lose the tie breaker to us. Good news for us.

Posted by: TripDonkeys | April 2, 2008 2:54 PM | Report abuse

@TripDonkeys,

That's a fair point, except that I think the point of the site is to provide the statistical chances of a particular event where certain relevant future events have unkown outcomes. We may intutively think that there's a 65% chance that CAR will win tonight given the quality of the teams, but statistically there is value in saying there are 4 possible outcomes, and how do they effect the chances of a given event occuring.

A few thoughts.

One of my favorite things was the car horn honking after the game. Continued all the way down Interstate 395. It was great to spot a car with Caps flag, magnet, etc. do the honking routine back and forth and watch all of the other cars react.

Hope Mo is going to be okay sooner rather than later. He has stepped up his play so much this year, and deserves to be part of the action.

If we played a drinking game where the rules were you drank everytime the Caps mentioned the word team, exhibited team qualities, etc. everyone would be in a drunken stupor until the summer.

Not only is he going to put all 3 of tonight's important hockey games on for us, he's going to do it in the semi-private room beside the bar and have sound for the game we want as well. It's the non-smoking side of the bar, sorry to smokers but on the smoking side of the bar they're showing the replays of today's champions league games.

So if anyone is up for it, there'll be at least five people at Summers watching hockey tonight, come out and join us!!!

How about that open ice hit that Semin laid on Joe Corvo? (I think it was Corvo) It was then that I knew the Caps were not going to lose.

An Alex Semin hat trick:

1 goal
1 big hit
1 bad turnover attempting an unrealistic, and totally impossible pass.

@Btoek

Although we appreciate you trolling in a very polite way, there is no way we can pull for the Flyers. It's hard enough, as Caps fans, to cheer for the Pens to win. So we must cheer for the Flyers to lose.

On the positive side, if you play golf, there is a 98% chance you can get a tee time with a FLyer on APril 7th!

Posted by: Leeguru | April 2, 2008 3:50 PM | Report abuse

And as of right now there is a 99% chance you can get a tee time with a cap on the 6th.

Posted by: Btoek | April 2, 2008 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the Flyers could "pound that little punk Crosby" and still lose to the Pens, which would be a definite win-win for us; maybe we should offer up some good karma for that!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 2, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse

I see where you are coming from, but on principle alone, I could NEVER cheer for the Pens, no matter what was at stake.

Crosby has single handily turned the league into a 1 man show. He doesnt have 1/3 of the skill that Ovechkin has nor the heart.

And in all honesty, if the Caps were playing the Pens tonight and my team's hope fell with the Flyers losing(1 of many scenarios), Id be ok with the Pens getting the daylights kicked out of them.

Realistically though I'd like to see us play Boston or maybe even NJ.

Posted by: keef | April 2, 2008 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the statistical probability of the Caps having tee times on the 6th are about that high. They'll want a nice game of 18 before they start their historical playoff run to the Cup. Golf is relaxing, don't ya know?

Can you imagine the headlines if the Pens actually clinch the division?

Crosby does this and Crosby does that

Screw him.

My personal favorite is how the AP articles describe his passes.

"A nifty behind the back pass"
"A pass that not many players could make"
"Somehow he saw through traffic and found his open man with a jaw dropping pass."

Uh, get off it

Id rather play the Pens with Crosby in the lineup. Malkin seems to be kept in check with he is in the lineup.

I would love to play Jersey RIGHT NOW..they are struggling and they ride Brodeur so hard these days into the playoffs that he barely has much left come game time.

Personally, I would love to see the Caps play Montreal

couple reasons:

The atmosphere up there is amazing and makes for some great games to watch

Montreal is a threat and never rolls over so it makes for some great battles and exciting games.

Chances of winning that series are 50/50 ut I would like to see it.

Replace 'man' with 'net' and jaw dropping pass with jaw dropping half slap shot.

Sometimes, you gotta pee on everyone's chips... and right now, the Flyers are in the way of the stream.

Sorry, every man for himself - it's playoff push time.

Karma - this is are Karma coming back around... I think you see the point as you were dead last in the league last year. AND, you got swept by the Caps last year which gets me to my conclusion - no team will make the playoffs if they get swept by the Caps. So, that means Ottawa is out and you guys are okay... but that doesn't mean we don't want you to lose.

As for Crosby - sooner or later, the league will figure out that Backstrom is better than Crosby. And yes, this is a 1 man league... it's Ovechkin's.

I think 828 means Canadians, not Canadiens.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 2, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

melanie - it's the nation, Canada - the "all knowing" hockey people... not Montreal Canadiens. Because they are the hockey snobs of the world - they think the SE division is weak.

Posted by: 828 | April 2, 2008 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Well, 828, this is one Canadian who happens to have found a home in the SE division. We learn, it just takes us a while sometimes.

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 2, 2008 5:43 PM | Report abuse

@melanie

Mostly on TSN.CA, but also on CBC and other Canadian hockey sites. Other than Grapes (who doesn't like AO for some reason, or anyone in the SE division including Carolina who's won the cup a few times), no one in the "established media" is overtly hostile, but you can see it there. Also, when the Comment areas open up, you'll see it blatantly there. One of the main reasons people are saying AO shouldn't be given the MVP if the Caps don't make it to the dance, is because all of his numbers are against the weak SE division. It's a bogus argument, but they make it all the time.

I just have to say that I've been a season ticket holder for 6 years (since I graduated from college or is that collage . .whatever) and I go to every home game every year. And this is the first time I have had a drive to post and bond withe fellow fans . . .

Is it gonna be another red out for Thursday?

They're not asking for it but I hope the fans keep it up. I'd be surprised if it wasn't with the way the press and team acknowledged the crowd.

Well, i dont think that the SE divison is week, but your problebly wrigt about the the Canadien people, i just think that the SE divison is going to prouve that they are verry great teem and i think they know and that's just wy they say that;)

@ keef,
They're asking for it!! Caps website is asking for another red out on Thursday! Hey, lets just go ahead and pull one on Saturday too!

You all need to get after it with the red - paint your bodies, dye your hair, wear a red hat, dress up as santa, bring a redskin, whatever... get your red on (think that was from the Nats).

@Greg S.

Grapes doesn't like OV because he's Russian. Same reason he doesn't like Francophones because they are Francophones. Usually he complains that Francophones or Sweedes, Czechs and Russians are too soft, too "European" in their play. Then you get a Russian -OV- who is immensely talented but also physical and he complains that he celebrates too much. Meanwhile Cindy ballet dances around and Cherry gets his pocket square in bunch cooing about how great he is, mostly because he's got Cherry's most important trait in evaulating a hockey player: he's an English speaking Canadian, in other words, perfect.

I wonder if anyone got a great deal on a BMW this morning because Lee was in such a good mood!?!

If the Caps win out and get it, it may be worth looking into getting a 5 series imported from you Lee!

Cptn Cliche, Hatton's problem is he is a Manchester City fan - I doubt Halpern has that trouble in his life.

That's the prize?!? Hmm ... I may have to rethink this ... ;-) Seriously - I have talked to a few folks who may be able to get their hands on spares - I will let you know as soon as I hear from them.

RE: Season tickets, that's not what I was saying - STHs can buy extra tickets for individual playoff games through this Friday, so Steve could hook you up with that now. However, if you want a partial plan for next season, just call guest services - I am sure that they can tell you what's available (and, if you did that now, then you could buy your own playoff tickets before the pre-sale ends on Friday). Does that make sense?

I did not arrive at work until 1 eastern time. And haven't seen a customer yet today. And when I'm in a good mood, I want to make money! so the customers have to pay more.

Boo! Actually, the winner is me and my daughter.

As for the presale, Steve would be my date anyway, so I'm good there. i am buying a package for next season, cuz my normal source has not been too reliable.

Posted by: Leeguru | April 2, 2008 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Boo,
I never wear a United shirt on the game of a game - its even bad luck it I touch it in the drawer. Long story, involving much bad luck. Hockey is different and if I forked out the airfair, hotels, game tickets, I would go the full distance and wear a Caps jersey. Thinking of getting one as we speak. Hopefully will be over in the States before the end of 08 and will look to get to a Caps game.

Lee,
You are harsh! I've just bought a new car, glad I didn't have to negoiate with you!

@Boo,

If season ticket holders can buy extra tickets for individual playoff games on Friday, and the playoff schedule isn't set until probably Sunday, how will I know what dates to buy extra tickets for.....?

Cause while Lee is a bud, my wife is every bit the hockey fan that I am (she doesn't blog thou) and (sorry Lee) she'll be joining me if scheduling works with our girls.

So anyway, how do we score the extra tickets? I didn't get the STH e-mail.

That said, it's terrifying to have him back in the lineup, if that's what happens. It's disturbing to have a guy who's spent most of the season rusting on the bench, now playing in the two biggest games of the year.

Bruins only get one point, so they're at 92.

With two wins the Caps would get to 94, so the Bruins still need to lose one of their last two (or lose both of them in OT)

The Caps have more wins than Boston so they have the tie-breaker

Thanks for somethings. Don't waste any time thinking about how Caps can get in with a loss. Not productive. Caps need to win out or they will get killed by three point games. I expect Boston with their 14 man clog system, to get at least one point in each of their remaining games. I expect the same from Ottawa, but not with the same conviction. They have been in a funk, with no indication they are about to break out.

Posted by: JSchon | April 2, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

That's correct -- we do not control our own destiny because the most points we could get is 94, and all the teams we're chasing can get more than that by winning out.

If Ottawa can find a way to lose to Toronto in regulation tomorrow night, we would control our own destiny.

FYI

Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player to his team)
• Who votes: Professional Hockey Writers Association; Last season's winner: Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh)

Bucci's winner: Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals. This is the season of Ovechkin. No. 8 is a gigantic personality; so profound, it lights up the entire sport. With 60 goals and 106 points (through Monday), he has made his linemates better, especially rookie Nicklas Backstrom. Ovechkin plays a ton, averaging 23 minutes a night, and every minute is played with the aura of a freshly lit Christmas tree. He is clearly the MVP. This one isn't even close, playoffs or not.

Posted by: Super | April 3, 2008 5:10 AM | Report abuse

Am I the only one disappointed after last night? Ok, so we got some help from The High Priestess herself but I'm left with the sour taste of what could have been.

Even Cindy's two goal heroics still doesn't put our life in our hands. Plus, all of this and the past few weeks 9-1-0 will count for nought should the unthinkable happen and we don't win out.

Instead of getting too far ahead, lets concentrate our energy on winning tonight. That then means the weekend is meaningful. Oh and if those lovely, lovely Leafs could lay the mother of all beatings on Ottawa (scoreless in their last two games) that would be much appreciated.

Some good news from last night. Malkin only picked up a couple of points and so is still 4 behind AO. Got to believe that the Ross could be wrapped up and added to the Richard for AO tonight if he picks up a couple of points.

Finally, and so much for not looking too far ahead, we need the Habs to win their remaining two games (tonight at home to Buf and Saturday at home to the Leafs). This would put them two points ahead of Pittsburgh in the race for the Conference title and mean the Pens would have something very real to play for on Sunday against the Flyers.

Gotta love how all the ex-Caps seem to be doing their best to get us into the playoffs.

Zubrus had 2 goals and an assist (ok, 1 goal, but he "scored" on a wraparound and had the goal taken away). In the same game Metropolit completely shanked his shootout opportunity.

Gonchar had the first goal and 2 assists. His assists on both Crosby goals were ridiculous.

Even Halpern tried to help (though the game was lost at the point he scored his goal).

RED OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 3, 2008 7:16 AM | Report abuse

Was just having a look at the standings and noticed something that I wanted to verify with you guys. I hope it'll not get too confusing...
Boston and Ottawa are both at 92 points, and they play each other the 4th. So if Washington win both its remaining games and the Boston-Ottawa game doesn't go to OT (but both teams still win their other game), Washington makes the play-off!? The reason would be the tie-breaker of number of wins (against Boston) or most points in the meetings between the clubs (against Ottawa). Correct???

Posted by: Jerry | April 3, 2008 7:23 AM | Report abuse

If the Caps win both games, this how we can get in.
WAS 94
-if CAR losses to Florida in regulation or OT
-if PHI get 3 points or fewer in their last 2 games, NJ & PIT.
-if BOS losses one of its last 2 games in regulation, @OTT & BUF.
-if OTT losses one of its next 2 games in regulation, @TOR & BOS.
(if all of these things happen, we get the 6th seed)

If the Caps get 3 points in the final 2 games.
WAS 93
-if CAR losses to FLA in regualtion.
-if PHI losses to either PIT or NJ in regulation.
-if BOS only registers 1 point in its final 2 games.
-if OTT only registers 1 point in its final 2 games.

If the Caps only get 2 points in their final 2 games.
WAS 92
-if PHI only registers 1 point in their final 2 games.

Thats the list.

Posted by: JSchon | April 3, 2008 7:47 AM | Report abuse

@ Jerry you are correct

Posted by: mrbill | April 3, 2008 7:47 AM | Report abuse

In the event teams are tied in the standings, the following tiebreakers are applied to determine which team receives the higher seeding.

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4. Goal differential

Posted by: JSchon | April 3, 2008 7:50 AM | Report abuse

Dave:
That 1 point really does not hurt us - we would have needed them to lose one more time, regardless.

Jerry/Greg:
Not quite ...

Ottawa currently has us on the tie breaker, so if they win tonight and lose Friday, they're in. But if they lose in regulation tonight, then whoever (between Ott/Bos) loses on Friday is out and we are in (assuming we win two more).

If Boston loses one of their next two (and we win both), they're out and we're in.

If Philly loses one of their last two (even if they get a point), they are out and we are in.

If the Canes lose one of their last games (even if they get a point), then they are out and we are in.

So we REALLY need Ottawa to lose in regulation tonight to get any immediate breathing room. If that happens, then come tomorrow night our destiny is ours to control (assuming we win tonight). If Ottawa wins tonight (or loses in OT), then we need to hold our breath in the hopes that Boston, Philly or Carolina lose their last games.

Of course, this ALL assumes that we will win our last two ... because we will, right?!? :-D

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

JSchon,

Ha! I spent ages this morning compiling a list of the options for us making the playoffs. I was just about to post it when I saw your much more concise and frankly better summary. Glad I checked.

One last option and most amazing of all, if the Flyers go 0-2-0 (finishing with 91 points/40 wins) the Caps can afford to go 0-1-1 (91 points/41 wins)!!

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | April 3, 2008 7:56 AM | Report abuse

I've been addicted to the Caps since 1982. I think this team has a real shot at the Cup, if the boys can just make the playoffs. We've got a hot goalie, and we've got No. 8. But it's more than that. The overall talent on this roster is the best it's ever been, in my view. This team is better and deeper than the valiant 1998 crew that lost to Detroit in the finals. It's been a tremendous run since Boudreau took over. Even if the Caps miss the playoffs, this season has been a success in the way the team recovered from the awful start. I know the future is bright, but I don't want to wait until next year. Here we go, Caps, here we go.

Posted by: Florida Al | April 3, 2008 8:18 AM | Report abuse

If Ottawa loses either of the last 2 games in regulation and Caps win both remaining games-Caps are in-we do hold the tie breaker over them-we will have equal number of wins and the second tie breaker is head to head-we were 4-0-0 against Ottawa this year. We need to win out and have the Ottawa-Boston game end in regulation and we are in.

Boo -

You're wrong about Ottawa. They do NOT have us on the tiebreaker. They're only ahead of the Caps if they win both games.

If they win tonight and lose Friday (in regulation), they'll have 94 pts, 43 Ws.

If the Caps win tonight and Sat., the Caps will have 94 pts, 43 Ws.

If Ottawa loses both games, the Caps are in with only one win. Both teams would have 92 pts and 42 Ws.

Although we want the Caps to finish with two more wins, they make the playoffs with only one win if:

Ottawa loses both games in regulation, or

Boston loses both games in regulation, or

Philadelphia finishes at best 0-1-1.

Jerry/Greg:

Ottawa currently has us on the tie breaker, so if they win tonight and lose Friday, they're in.

Posted by: Boo! | April 3, 2008 07:53 AM

Boo, with all the possible permutations it can get confusing, but I think that Jerry and Greg are correct. If Ottawa wins tonight and loses IN REGULATION to Boston, and we win both of our games, we both will have 94 points, but we will be in. We both will have played the same number of games (the first tiebreaker), the teams will have the same number of wins (the second tiebreaker), but we will get the third tiebreaker (most points in games between the two teams) because we beat them all four times we played this season.

Posted by: rbpalmer | April 3, 2008 8:58 AM | Report abuse

Ottawa does not have us on the tiebreaker. If we can catch them in pts we should have the same about of wins. We were 4-0 vs. them this year.

Lets put this in an easy term, if the caps win both of there last 2 games, and either Carolina, Boston, Ottawa, or phily, lose one game in regulation, we are in. I kind of like thoses odds.

Considering the team is asking fans to wear red, I'd go with the red shirt.

But you're a grown person and can dress yourself. You just have to ask yourself if you like being ostracized by 18,000 fans wearing red. :)

Posted by: keef | April 3, 2008 9:29 AM | Report abuse

In the playoff scenarios on Nhl.com, and granted, they were not updated, if carolina had gotten no points against Tampa, and Philly, boston, and NYR has all won, those 3 teams would have clinched playoff berths. That doesn't seem right.

Posted by: JSchon | April 3, 2008 9:38 AM | Report abuse

Ok, I looked at the stats. If we win out, we still need one of those four teams to lose in regulation. That's what it all boils down to. We need to take care of business and crush the two teams in our path, and then hope for a little help from the other four.

Thompson himself said "I'm just surprised we have such a huge hockey fan base for our Capitals" and Doc Walker said he'd be there tonight.

Posted by: Daev UK Caps Fan | April 3, 2008 09:55 AM

Actually, guys, I think that first tiebreaker is there because games sometimes do get canceled because of horrible weather (i.e., blizzards, ice storms, etc.) at the game site, and they can be very difficult or impossible to make up because of scheduling and travel issues. So I think it is possible that teams will not have played the same number of games at the end of a season. That won't be the case here, though, so it really isn't an issue.

I don't think the CAPS consider the Bolts or Panthers as cake walks considering the trouble they have given them in the past, and hopefully because Bruce let them know that nothing has been successful yet. Now I'm sure this is very much where Cooke and Fedorov come in. They know it's not done either and hopefully have conveyed that to the youngsters - I believe they are ready to take the next step and that means focus, determination, no mistakes and being on top of their games from here on out. Dig a little deeper and show everyone what your made of!!! We are Ready - Believe, Believe!

It doesn't. Montreal's position doesn't matter to us until we know how the standings are going to shake out, and that's something we won't know until Sunday considering how things are going.

As for the Slugs, with only two games left and them two points behind us, they're irrelevant. If they catch us, we're done for anyway, and we hold the tiebreaker in games won.

It sure is nice watching the Slugs lose, though :)

As the Sens wake up, get out of bed and drag a comb across their head this morning, they stand tied with Boston and a mere point ahead of Philadelphia, who is the caboose in the eight car playoff train. Roaring up behind them is the surging locomotive known as the Washington Caps, engineered by the dynamic goal-scoring-followed-by-board-crashing Alexander Ovechkin, who fans in DC saluted a couple of nights ago with chants of "MVP! Mauree,
Spot on about Montreal.

If the Habs win out (and they finish their schedule on Saturday) it means the Pens would need 2 points against Philly on Sunday to win the Conference. In that scenario they would be tied with Montreal on points but have one more win.

If Montreal lose their next two, the Pens claim the Conference on Saturday without playing, making their last game meaningless to them. They would most probably rest a few players in readiness for the first round making the job easier for Philly.

Remember, we could all be sat here on Sunday praying for a Pens regulation win. We need them as hungry as possible for that and that means the Habs win out.

Simple answer. We win both, 98% chance we are in. Now, let's concentrate on that. Winning both.

On the bright side, Torts may be over it. The bolts have been atrocious on the road, and not that great in back-backs. We should have all the momentum in the world. Just need to make sure the fans in the seats are pushing our boys.

Not one to stick up for a country of 30 million despite serving 6 years in the Canadian Forces, but a few points-

If Washington makes the top 8 and gets in the playoffs, they'll have earned it and with it, a big amount of respect; it's the one team in that division that frankly should scare the living bejesus out of the other 15 playoff teams because they're the one team that should scare the s*** out of the elite teams in the West(and seriously- Grapes LOVES Ovechkin).

Take heart- you're the one team in that division that most Canadians either do or should respect.

As to the SE division, you play 20% of your schedule against the two worst teams in the conference. That's the big bugaboo.

BTW, the 2004 Cup was flat stolen from Calgary due a blown call on a perfectly good goal. Edmonton wins in 2006 if Roloson doesn't blow his knee out.

Hook- as a card-carrying Leafs fan (whose second favourite team is usually playing Ottawa), trust me- it's pure hatred for the Sens. They hate us, we hate them. I'd love nothing further than to see those f***ers lose tonight and go from Conference Finalists to #9 in the conference. Screw national loyalty; being able to shove this choke job up their a**es makes paying my season ticket renewal (about $8,000 CDN) worthwhile. I'll tell Alfie to keep 'em in the short grass.
