Va. chiropractor pleads guilty to steroid charges

A Virginia chiropractor who treated members of the Washington Capitals hockey team has pleaded guilty to steroids charges in a Florida court.

A spokesman for the state attorney in Polk County, Fla., says Douglas Nagel was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty Tuesday to attempted possession of a controlled substance.

Caps players Matt Bradley, Shaone Morrisonn and Eric Fehr admitted receiving chiropractic treatment from Nagel but denied getting steroids from him. Nagel also denied that he ever distributed steroids and said the drugs he ordered from a Florida supplier were for personal use.

The supplier, Andrew Thomas, had told investigators that the steroids were for professional athletes. Police expressed skepticism that the quantity of steroids ordered by Nagel were for personal use.

the kids who need to be juicing up are Flash, Gordo, and Sarge. That's whose names I want to see associated with these types of scandals. Where's the commitment to offseason strength conditioning!!!!!!

import cmd successful

One thing for certain, cstanton, the Caps will NEVER have a checking line center until the coach decides to assemble a checking line. Yes, would be great if Steckel could step up and do it. He, Laich and Bradley or AG could possibly work effectively.

Posted by: tominsocal1

all this talk...talk of trades, possible lineups, FA signings. Its just talk. We'll go into the season with Flash at 2nd line center and the ripple effect will weaken the bottom of the lineup.

lets have a look at everyone's REALISTC lineup come Oct. Anyone using more than 2 Hershey players will be automatically ejected with a 2, a 5, and a gamer for wishful thinking.

hahahahahhahahahaha...what grown men still get autographs! That is funny!

Better yet, how can one who is over 30 wear a game jersey out in public...

hahahahhahahhahahaa..

We won't have a checking line because we are always trying to score, not shut anyone down.

That's why we can't win when it counts.

We play our game...then when MTL puts out Cammellari line...we have no backcheck ovie or semin...and they score.

There has to be a game plan. I'm sure there is, but it isn't very easy for this guy who has seen about 60 games a year over the past 30 years..

We just put ovie out over and over and over. Sometimes for 3 minute shifts...

@soaringCaps,

The kind that got the whole team to sign said jersey and framed it once he got home. It's call an investment a$$ but of course an empty clue bag such as yourself would not get that.

soaring, i'm right with ya brutha. My unfiltered opinion on SOME of the folks who disagree is, they just don't have enough of a hockey-watching history to understand how unbalanced the Caps' philosophies are about what it takes to win. And when they compare it to recent successful teams, they don't make the right comparisons either. That's it in a nutshell. But I agree with you on your major points.

1) too much attention paid to offense (the rebuttal here usually is, "do you want to go back to watching boring defensive hockey that the Caps played for years?" or "did you prefer Hanlon?")

2) not enough grit (rebuttal: you just want a team full of goons) of course, who doesn't!

3) need to upgrade our D corps (rebuttal: "teams with equivalent defenses have won the Cup" or "the D wasn't the problem v the Habs")

you gotta just grit your teeth and move on. They're just misguided though they have their hearts in the right place :)

Congrats on the most ignorant, stupid, pointless comment so far today. And that says a lot being we have sgm3 and cstanton1 on here :P (zinged you both). Next topics to come on the SoaringCaps Lives in a Basement Show: Taking a photo with a celeb, come on guys, grow up and act 31 please. And why would anyone consume alcohol when watching games?

Apparently Poti just signed an extension (2 yrs, pay cut 3mil, then 2.75mil). I'm good with that.

As much grief as he gets Poti was awesome in the playoffs last year. The amount he signed for too isn't much for a veteran top 4 defenseman.

It is interesting though and unexpected.

i'll tell ya one thing, if scott stevens was still around i'd camp out all night for a chance to chew the fat with him. Man there's a million questions I'd like to ask that guy. Starting with, does he really think he could've won any Cups with the Caps had he stuck around.

Posted by: cstanton1 | September 21, 2010 2:25 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

Assuming they trade for a legit 1st pairing blue liner and ergo Poti gets bumped down on the depth chart, which would in turn have erskine/sloan fall off said chart...you're telling me you think Poti isnt a good 4th/5th dman?

His D isnt as bad as you make it out to be.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | September 21, 2010 2:26 PM | Report abuse

@sgm3

I have no problem re-signing Poti, however the money is an issue. A cap hit of $2.8M for a player who in the two years of the extension will be our 5th Dmen is way over the top.

Posted by: ThePat | September 21, 2010 2:27 PM | Report abuse

lets all get on record

BAD MOVE.

by extending Poti, in essence you're either saying you think he's a top 4 player. Or you think he fits the criteria of what a bottom pairing dman should be.

So...can this impending Caps dynasty consist of Green, Sarge, Poti, Carlson, and Alzner as our top 5? Signing Poti just killed whatever room we possibly had on our top 4 for a quality dman. If we somehow did acquire a top dman, I don't see us getting rid of any of the aforementioned top 5. Which means, if we did acquire a top 4 guy, it creates a bottom pairing of Poti and someone else (Sarge or Alzner) as our 3rd pairing. Horrible idea imo.

my objection to Poti is this.

He's too inconsistent to be a top 4 guy. Despite his showing v the Habs with Carlson. I wish to god we'd advanced just so you guys could see Poti have to deal with the Pens or Flyers forwards.

And he's not the type of guy I want on my bottom pairing unless he's paired with a very physical defensive dman. I like my bottom pairing dmen to be like my bottom 6 forwards. Tough, hardnosed, defensive minded. At least 1 of those 2 need to be that way. If Poti gets pushed down into that slot along with Sarge or Alzner, its just a bad move.

That about sums it up. I had hoped, nay, prayed, it would be Green, Schultz, Carlson, Alzner, Orlov and the killer D man we all want going forward. Guess not.

What's next? A ten-year extension for Flash?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | September 21, 2010 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Who in the world would pay Tom Poti $2.88m per year?

Way too much for Poti.

We are going to need to pick and choose our UFA to bring back. Poti should not have even been a choice.

That was a $3.5m contract we got out from, now we bring $2.88m back. When we signed Poti, we needed help on the PP. Now we don't, goodbye. What?

McPhee is out of his f---king mind.

Per twitter

Tom Poti said he left $$$ on the table because he wants to win “not just 1 Cup but hopefully more than 1” in Washington.

So much for picking up a UFA D next off season.

"Tom Poti was our best defenseman this past offseason. He exhibits the type of qualities we look for in a player. He was our top target this offseason, we pursued him, and by god we got him! 5 bad days, that's all."

Posted by: cstanton1 | September 21, 2010 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Tom can tell us the impacts of the signing on salary cap, but I always assumed that the way to bring in a very solid veteran d would be, in significant part, by using the space created when Poti's contract expired. Maybe even using him as part of a trade this year. I think the new contract makes him untradeable. Poti played better as the year went on last year, but we're not exactly talking Langway, are we? The worst part was watching him on the PK, where he seemed to consistently ignore opposing players setting up in/near the crease. Certainly not physical, doesn't appear to be a leader.

i think you win hands-down. That is about as close to the truth as you can get. Can't quibble with any of it. Maybe MP for Aucoin but its a toss-up. And kudos for excluding most of the Hershey boys. I predict we lose the series in just 3 games this upcoming postseason. The ole 3 game sweep.

I have to be honest. To sign Tom Poti to a 2 year extension, before we even drop the puck on the final year of his contract, seems over the edge. Maybe we should see how he performs, oh, I don't know, since the f--king injury. This man has lost his mind.

Today, I couldn't hate GMGM more, even if he would have snuck into my bed and impregnated my wife.

This has got to stop. Two years? How much?

It's ok. At least we got Brian Wilsie back.

Posted by: zmega |

he was definitely the worst player on defense for us the previous post-season. Coughed up the puck under the slightest duress, consistently bad clears, and of course he's not exactly Tinordi in the crease. He's a veteran who plays well sometimes and not so well at other times. To extend a guy like this is idiocy or desperation. I won't let myself get sucked into the sign-and-trade talk. But now at least George has an excuse for not pursuing a top flight dman next offseason. No room!

Jeezez H Cryste, George...after all the time and energy I put into defending you, you go and do something like this! Now there will surely be no peace on these boards!

FTR, I was not in favor of dumping Poti--Is he a bad defenseman? No. Granted, he is not and will never be of Lidstrom/Volchenkov/Pronger/Chara caliber, but we can't get those guys, and Poti does--if nothing else--seem to be fairly responsible in his own zone...

OTOH, I think it may have been unwise to extend him unless there are grave doubts about Green's readiness to lead the d-corps next year.
