Varlamov Injured; Russia Rolls

Goaltending prospect Simeon Varlamov has suffered an ankle injury and might be sidelined for the world championships, according to Sport-Express sports writer Slava Malamud. Details are kind of sketchy as to the severity of the injury and exactly how it occurred, but Malamud said in an email that Varlamov has been removed from Team Russia's active roster.

Update:Varlamov did not sustain any significant ligament damage to his ankle, but he's on crutches and still might not be able to play. Also, Team Russia, led by Alexander Semin's two goals and an assist, crushed Italy 7-1 tonight.

That's too bad. It would be great for him to get some work in before competing for ice time in Hershey.

Makes signing Huet to an extended deal all the more important.

Posted by: Roger #94 | May 2, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

man this stinks. Both for my fantasy team and for the missed experience the kid sorely needs.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | May 2, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Ouch for Sombrero Guy, that hurts!

And sucks for the Caps, the worlds would have been great experience for Varlamov, especially with him ready to come over this year. Hopefully he'll be ready for camp.

WHOA amazing goal by Hansen of Denmark. He SMOKED Kaberle with an Alex Semin-type move and buried it.

Posted by: Jordan | May 2, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov (injury), Fedor Fedorov and Medvedev have been removed from the final roster.

Posted by: King Huet | May 2, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Too bad for Fedorov, he wanted to play with his little big brother

Posted by: Anonymous | May 2, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

was Varlamov supposed to get playing time in this or was he just there as a backup?

Posted by: reekie | May 2, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

They said Varlamov was going to play in the opening rounds, and if he did well, play some more.

Posted by: Jordan | May 2, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Any news on Varlamov?

Posted by: dave | May 2, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

They're on NHL-sized ice, the announcer just said.

Posted by: Jordan | May 2, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

What? Fedorov didnt make the team? That sounds dumb....

Posted by: Roger #94 | May 2, 2008 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Go Denmark go!

Posted by: Jeff | May 2, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Vrbata scored again. He has two goals and an assist so far in this game.

Jordan:
Glad to hear the feed is good on WCSN. I can't watch it here at work but definitely plan to get some of the games this weekend.

Roger#94:
It was Fedor Fedorov (not Sergei) that got cut from the team. Fedor is Sergei's younger brother.

Both the Caps goaltending prospects are now injured!

Hopefully they recover quickly in time for development camp.

Posted by: Stormblue | May 2, 2008 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Anonymous | May 2, 2008 2:26 PM | Report abuse

As of 11 days ago per http://www.intelligencer.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=994228

Borden is playing in place of Michal Neuvirth who injured a leg in Oshawa's second-round series against Niagara. DePiero said he's still listed as "day-to-day" but indicated he wasn't in a hurry to make changes in goal.

Posted by: Dezlboy | May 2, 2008 2:42 PM | Report abuse

"DePiero remained curiously evasive about the Neuvirth injury, even after Wednesday's game, but general manager Brad Selwood confirmed Thursday that Neuvirth sustained torn meniscus in his knee and underwent surgery earlier this week in Washington."

Posted by: Fauxrumors | May 2, 2008 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Last I heard Neuvirth underwent surgery recently for that tear in his knee. Bad time for Caps blue chip goalie prospects.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | May 2, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse

JSchon,

Sorry I dont have any info on those guys you asked about. Watching Niskala as a young kid, he stood out like a diamond in the rough. Followed his career sporadically since. He got deep into training camp with Nashville at the start of this season before being assigned to Milwalkee in the AHL. It's probably just his size that's keeping him out of the NHL.

Really bad news about Varlamov. He was the one Cap I really wanted to see perform well. Also, anyone else think the Neuvirth injury sounds worse than it is being reported. Hope he's ok.

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | May 2, 2008 3:04 PM | Report abuse

"...but general manager Brad Selwood confirmed Thursday that Neuvirth sustained torn meniscus in his knee and underwent surgery earlier this week in Washington."

Noooooo! Not bad knees already! I've thought since last year that Neuvirth was the better prospect, or at least closer to being ready. UGH.

How can the Caps always get so unlucky? Two promising prospects, both injured just in time for their NA pro careers to start.

Posted by: errantelf | May 2, 2008 3:13 PM | Report abuse

If we lost both those prospects to injury we'd be in a lot of trouble... I doubt it will happen but it would be devastating. I could suit up for them, but I want an Olie-like contract! =p

Posted by: CapsCorndog | May 2, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

FWIW - better any injuries happen early in the "off season." and neither were expected to be on the CAPS team this year - so it doesn't really hurt the CAPS. Also, I think - Neuvirths injury is one that it fully recoverable - no lose of movement, ability...

Posted by: Dezlboy | May 2, 2008 3:17 PM | Report abuse

I heard somewhere that Neuvirth caught his leg on the goal post making a save and tore it. Well Sombrero, that puts us both down a man. Your goalie and one of my D. Flash got an assist though!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 2, 2008 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Just to let you know, as of the end of the CZE-DEN game, Sombrero guy is ahead...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 2, 2008 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Didn't Varlamov get spanked in his last spotlight appearance and follow that with a request to not play in Hershey this past year? Maybe I made that up but I don't think so.

This adds fuel to my concern he may not be one that makes it to the big-time.

Posted by: austinsteve | May 2, 2008 4:19 PM | Report abuse

From the Hockey News:

Ask Adam,

I've watched Sergei Fedorov for a long time now. After he left Detroit and after the lockout you could tell he was turning into a seasoned vet, but it was great seeing him in the playoffs for the first time in a long time this year.

Now that his NHL playing days are numbered, where do you think he might sign? If he does, I think it would be great to see him in a Red Wings jersey again.

Stephen Smith, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Stephen,

Judging by the joy Fedorov got from his short stint in Washington, I'd say there's a better-than-average chance he returns to continue mentoring the Capitals' cache of talented youngsters.

I'm sure Detroit fans would welcome him back for one last tour of duty in Motown. But as noted in my answer to Robin, those types of reunions rarely work out as planned.

Posted by: Greg S. | May 2, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

meniscus injury is not as bad as it sounds. it's just the tissue between your knee joints. they can mend that pretty quickly. should definitely be ok by the beginning of camp. i had a tear in my meniscus in college playing soccer. took about 3-4 weeks to recover...

Posted by: natman19 | May 2, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Not sure why the link is titled that way, but apparently, someone's ice is worse than ours...

http://www.tuvanhillbilly.com/se-ovicesucks.shtml

Thanks Sombrero for pointing it out!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 2, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

@Stephen,
I would say fedorov will choose between detroit and washington. I think detroit will be able to offer more money so its up to him if he wants more money or really enjoys playing with semin and ovechkin. I would not be mad if he chose detroit, he is a class act and does have ties to motown. I doubt he considers to go anywhere else and if he did it would be.for the money. Detroit and washington are two best systems for fedorov's creative style of play. Pitt doesn't have the cap space and doesn't really need him anyway with 3 young centers. It is up to FEDS wash or det

-My gf's roommate is from Detroit and she still holds a grudge about him leaving Detroit
-When the Caps got him so cheap, his interview on the Caps website had him wondering aloud why Detroit didn't even try for him.
-Based on Detroit's performance it doesn't really appear they need Sergei and his shadows from the past swirling around their locker room to be successful

Green just hit the post in the game vs Slovenia...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 2, 2008 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Jesus, Mike Green would have had two assists, but both goals were stupidly disallowed! And Nash scored one of them!

Posted by: Jordan | May 2, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

@Icebat

you bring up some good points. Detroit does not really need Fedorov. They still might add him if they feel that they don't have any young guys coming up to help out, but detroit always finds gems so I doubt that. It might just come down to a team offering FEDS 3-4 Mil per or if he takes 2.5 per and stays in DC

Posted by: O-V-P | May 2, 2008 6:12 PM | Report abuse

@O-V-P

I'm just wishing aloud that Detroit won't want some useless over the hill throwaway player who cuold mess up their locker room.

That way maybe we will be able to afford to sign him.

I am proud of the way our boys are showing their skills so far at the world championships! The OV/Fedorov/Semin line was pretty hot tonight! The more time the three of them spend together the more I think Fedorov will be willing to stick around...at least thats what I am hoping.

If I calculated right, I have 14 points so far.

Make sure you guys double check the stats IIHF is putting out. Somehow they had Patrick O'Sullivan listed as EVEN instead of +1 when he had a goal in a 4-0 USA victory...

For those of you keeping track of the Fantasy League--unofficial results as of the end of the night...
1. Semin's stellar performance and Tim Thomas' superb netminding boosted oo7 into the top spot with 34 pts.
2. Honed's team performed well, overall, including a win by Russian goalie Eremenko--29.25 pts
3. Right there in third is Sombrero Guy, who, despite losing both of his goalies to injury or poor performance, posts 29 pts largely in part to a great night by Vrbata.
4. JMU's mostly Russian team didn't do too badly, nor did a certain red-haired Czech, but it was the 45 saves of Latvian goalie Masalskis that gives her the 4 spot with 22.25 pts.
5. Steve R is right behind JMU with 22 points. Dany Heatley really came through for him today--scoring a hat-trick--along with his North American defense, which chipped in with penalty minutes.
6. Jeff's Danish goalie faced 47 shots and stopped all but 5, giving him a leg up in the standings, (or maybe it was the Czech team helping him out) along with a goal from Caps star Alex Ovechkin--18 pts.
7. Jordan's MJOLLNIR MIDGARD got most of its point help from Canadian forward Rick Nash, 2 assists (1 on the PP) and 2 minutes in the box, along with Russian D-man Proshkin, who also chipped in an even strength helper and some time in the box.
8. And in last place, with a rather dismal 10.75 pts in JSchon, who must have been really hoping to get a better showing out of the Danish team, who barely bothered his Czech custodian.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's action.

PS, WCSN has a fairly good feed and for $5 for the month, you might not be able to beat the value. You can also watch all the games you might have missed on demand!

Not sure who Random Commentator #2 is, but their stat keeping needs a little work.

oo7 45.5 points (5 YTP)
Sombrero 33 points (4 YTP)
Honed 32.75 points (4 YTP)
Jeff (DC) 28.5 points (4 YTP)
jmu 26.75 points (5 YTP)
JSchon 26.25 points (4 YTP)
Steve R 24 points (4 YTP)
Jordan 14 points (8 YTP)

Before I place foot in mouth, someone please double check my stats.
