Varlamov's New Pads

For all of the goalie geeks out there: Here's Semyon Varlamov in his new red, white and blue pads, the ones he plans to wear this season. (He donned Hershey's colors last season.)

Varlamov told Tarik a new Capitals-only themed mask is en route from Sweden and should be here Thursday.

is his mask being made by the same chick friend of backstrom who makes those awesome knit hats?

also, i hate seeing pictures of our goalies with all those pucks in the net. can you ask cheeseboy to edit those out next time.

Those are okay. Look better than a lot of other goalies pads.

And has anyone seen Marty's new pads? They look ugly.

@richmondphil. I might be interested in your SJ tickets, depending on where they are/how much you want for them. wrp530@yahoo.com

and to answer to your question from the previous thread: false. I would give a goalie a mulligan on 1 of the 4. lol.

large23220:
you made the call for Lindsay - and poof! she appeared

i hope all those pucks in the net behind varly weren't glove side :)

@caps512

Hah. Unfortunately, I was being sarcastic about that. I will be attending that game and will be excited, since it will be my first of the year. Also, I stay up in the 400s, usually 408-412. I am young and poor. Don't know if that's too high for you. I can deal with the nosebleeds.

I don't think it's sold out though. Couldn't turn up a chance to see a West coast team so early.

Funny where the arrows on Varly pads are pointing to....not really sure I would want to direct pucks in that direction.

eh, just a stock Vaughn design. I am sure you will see a number of goalies in the NHL this year with pads that look the same, just different colors

Hey phil, I mainly skim everyones posts so I missed the sarcasm. I got season tixs in 405, so thats not to high. My buddy has got tixs for that game though.

Hmmm...different pads from the ones he was wearing at yesterday's camp (a full set of Bauer gear). And those had his name embroidered on them too. I guess he likes the Vaughn...

Posted by: Keebler1 | September 8, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

He needs to get big red pads, like when MAF used those huge orange things at the WC.

Posted by: richmondphil | September 8, 2009 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Last thing he needs is a solid color pad... why do you think MAF started playing a lot better right after he went back to a white pad. Solid color pads make it easier for the shooter to pick up the holes as the net stands out a little more

Lindsay, could you ask Varlamov what he plans to do with his old mask after he starts using his new one. Any chance that he might put it up for auction to help raise money for Hockey Fights Cancer?

Posted by: madflava | September 8, 2009 4:15 PM | Report abuse

those pads are the same pads they use for NHL 09 for Theodore... infact those look exactly like theodores pads lol.

His pads are Vaughn Velocities (not sure what modifications he does...most of the stuff nowdays is game-ready out of the box). Vaughn, if it matters, specializes in goaltending equipment. If he wanted custom colours it would have taken minimal time.

Presumably, the NHL (as they are required to do) has inspected (and marked) his pads (all goaltending equipment must go through the league office for inspection). If I'm not mistaken Kay Whitmore (former NHL goalie) and Kris King head up the inspections.

I would be more than happy to volunteer to inspect Varly's new pads...

On a more serious note, I saw him standing at the light to cross the street near KCI on Sunday, and he is looking like he bulked up a bit over the summer.

@keebler1 Yeah I thought Varly was sporting the new Vapors....I guess he's staying true to Vaughn
