Varly's New Mask (Updated)

Looks like Mt. Rushmore on one side and Russian flag on the other. Tarik says he'll try to get a closer look later. (And yes, we probably need to get him a higher-quality camera.)

Update: Here are those closeups:

billd2 - lets see if they can keep up this pace, don't want the wear and tear of the season catching up to them too fast.

@ superpaqman: We talkin' about our reporters or the Caps? =P

Great piece on Eakins and can't wait to get more info on Varly. And don't forget Neuvy. How is he doing?

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | September 10, 2009 10:37 AM | Report abuse

Still no word from Theo on how he's been doing in dealing with his family?

Posted by: Fro_ | September 10, 2009 10:43 AM | Report abuse

I agree. Tarik needs a higher-quality camera. *snicker at insider joke*

Nice mask, how patriotic...

Leftcoast - I'm going to say the writers, its 82 game season plus preseason, that's a lot of time to get carpal tunnel or a variety of other writing related injuries (pens and pencils are dangerous, if you don't believe me watch the Bourne Identity). But seriously though, I have faith our Caps will be professional and do what it takes so they can be ready to face the sesason.

I am curious to see Preseason crowds this year. Last year it was about half full. But i have a feeling it might be closer to 75% capacity.

Since the shortage of tickets, the free tickets that Caps give to their season ticket holders are now for pre-season games and not regular season games like last year. I thought the day would never come when we would have ticket shortage.

Last year's preseason games weren't on TV, but were streamed on the website with the radio feed if I recall correctly.

@Fro_ - My guess is that subject is off limits for the time being given the sensitive nature.

That mask is money!!!

I like it. I hope it foreshadows split time between the Caps and the Russian Olympic Team.

The double-eagle golden crest on red was the symbol for the (Russian) Romanov dynasty. The double-eagle crest is used today (on a background of white-blue-red) as the seal of the President of Russia.

I know that some of them will be on MSG+.

Huge article on Laich and why he is a part of our core.

mask is OK. I think they should give him a plain white one and then let the team have at it with Sharpies

Can we refer to Varly as "Two-Face" yet?

Posted by: ChrisinSS | September 10, 2009 12:54 PM | Report abuse

And it says Varly on the neck protector. Nice.

I really like that helmet has Mt. Rushmore. A patriotic American symbol in a much different way than the usual flag, capital, colors, or eagle.

I wonder what made him or the artist choose it.

They might have picked a local landmark in favor of one that's in the middle of nowhere, but I love the mask anyway.

Posted by: thiazzi | September 10, 2009 1:38 PM | Report abuse

what other symbol is he gonna pick? the jefferson memorial or lincoln?

the capitol building as a symbol looks stupid and the phallic monument aka the big pencil?

Posted by: MNMNT | September 10, 2009 1:48 PM | Report abuse

@superpaqman The Bourne Identity, not to mention The Dark Knight -- that scene was pretty unforgettable.

@ChristinSS Apparently I'm not the only one with Batman on the brain today, but I'd reserve that nickname for someone less consistent. I won't name any names.

It's clever--picking an image of Washington to refer to DC.

Very nice mask I like it a lot. One thing is for sure though, he's certainly less superstitious then me, I'd feel really weird taking the minor league team off my mask before I was on a one-way deal. Also, does he know Mount Rushmore isn't in DC?

Posted by: dcfury | September 10, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

wow. these comments really make me embarrassed.

Posted by: MNMNT | September 10, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

MNMNT - wow, couldn't agree with you more there buddy. Time for a new blog, we're embarassing ourselves here.

Here check out more pictures of him wearing his mask.

His mask honors nationaility respect not DC it's self. He's proud of where he came from but also represents America the country that let's him play his dream and DC the nations capital. I love the new mask

Actually, that isn't a russian flag, its an imperial double eagle, a symbol of the czars and hence a nod to both his heritage AND his nickname.

Posted by: capsfansteve | September 10, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

yes but on the back of his mask he has the american flag and the russian flag

here's the link again sorry I typed it from my iTouch so i got it wrong no cut and paste lol
