Bruce is now talking about his team being "outworked"

maybe if he mentioned that the 20 or so times it happened last year in games they actually won, it would mean something.

To Bruce, being "outworked" is a concept that only comes into play in a game that we lose. He's really not true longstanding NHL coach material because basic concepts elude him.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 12, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

forward Matt Hendricks said. "We need to get the ball rolling in the right direction and just try to play really good road hockey. We don't have to be exciting. You just have to be gritty and win those battles and get two points out anyway we can."
--------------------

Matt's the only guy who gets it. He should the captain, coach, AND GM.

And Bruce's comments on the previous thread is typical Bruce. Blame the players, give himself a free pass. That's what he's best at.

Washington Post editors trying to change the topic real quick after a lackluster effort - good job

@kirk

I hope you're saying that tongue in cheek.
Were you at the last two games ? We suck!
Owner included !

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | February 12, 2011 6:51 PM

hunter: yes and no. the caps have major issues right now with precious little time for corrections.
they've got 48 hours to figure out the offense - i'll be at monday's game.
i have no comeback for "We suck!" - there isn't any other way to put it right now.
don't worry everyone - no goats blood for me - i'll stick with the kool-aid.

Great story, but odd timing to post it. Normally would surface on a weekday, not a Saturday night.

"We're all accountable in this organization, but sometimes some players get free passes, and we can't afford to have any free passes right now"

BB,
If everyone is accountable in the organization why do you keep giving sweaters to these guys?? Call up everyone from hershey. It can't be any worse, at least those guys would try.

For the kool-aid crowd, all us goat-blooders aren't pissed about losing but the complete lack of effort by this group and the constant bs that spews forth everyday about 'we need to play 60 minutes, blah, blah, blah'. shut-up and put up. If were going to suck, at least put a team on the ice that plays hard and sucks.

It is time to Nylander BB and GMGM.
This 'team' is completely wrecked.

BTW-is it the caps helping the kids or the kids showing the caps how to play hockey. After today, I am just not sure.

Posted by: cadlecreek1 | February 12, 2011 8:55 PM | Report abuse

At least the organization is doing something right. Nice story.

Too bad they're at a loss when it comes to the hockey team.

Maybe they should stick to charity work.

Poti needs to be put on Long Term IR. For what we need to do with this team, we need that cap space now.

Right now, with our team healthy, we are dreadful. Things are very broken but no one wants to fix it. We are depending on McPhee to fix it. How can anybody feel good about this?

Yes, BB and the players are terrible as well. At this point, I don't believe any coach can help some of these guys. We need (have needed) some new blood on the ice asap.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 12, 2011 10:37 PM | Report abuse

I think the problem is that this team does not believe in itself, its coaches or its system. Look at the Devils - Lemaire came in late December, and has turned them around to where the playoffs are not an impossible dream. And if you read the players' quotes - it's because he has them playing like a team and believing in the system and in each other. That is what is missing in this team, and nothing other than a coaching change and some new personnel will fix it.

I've got to figure out how to change my WaPo id - this most definitely is NOT the year. And I'm beginning to question whether it ever will be for the Capitals.

Posted by: Thisistheyear | February 12, 2011 10:38 PM | Report abuse

They're panicking? Maybe they are finally realizing what the other players in the NHL already know. The Caps are the most overrated team in the league. They are devoid of any will to win.

so im in costa rica (and the keyboard on this computer is all fked up...cant figure it out) and i see the caps lost 4-1.....erskine and djk both had solid stats (#4 1 hit, 4 blks, even.....djk 1 fight, 4 hits, even in just over 7 minutes) and the team still lost??? Any doubt now that the team has quit on BB and he must go??

talking to lots of canadien/senator fans here and they all know who djk is and don´t fault him for the caps woes....what gives, The Pat?? Sounds to me like he did his job admirably last night, i{m gonna go to hockeyfights.com right now to check it out...

the time to fire BB is long past, now gonna spend my remaining time on this computer checking up on the Bruins........

@hunterforcoach

unfortunately and sadly, i guess you, cstanton, me, fldave (where ya been??) and a few more have finally been vindicated.

dork55 (can´t find the asterick button) was -3....go figure. Can´t wait for Poti to get back so erskine can take a seat....i suppose last night´s loss was djk´s fault, if The Pat gets his way we´ll never see him again (btw, didn´t you say the team Nylandered djk and we´d never see him again in a caps jersey? i think your sources are bad)

well, gonna go have a few more drinks and score w/some fine women while my wife sleeps....though i{m pulliing hard for the caps, at least i still have the Bruins to pull for come playoff time.....MORE RUM!!

Posted by: vermontcaps | February 12, 2011 11:11 PM | Report abuse

enough time for 1 more post.......can{t watch any videos, so can{t comment on djk´s fight....looks like the isles/pens had quite a game the other night, good for the isles

just a reminder that this team was flying high until the moment BB rendered Erskine a lame-duck....the wheels have fallen off since.

Pierre LaCroix for GM, and anyone other than BB/Cassidy/Murray for coach......i{ll check in after the next game....i{m being propositioned, gotta rum (i mean run)

The big problem with being a Kool-aid drinker is that there's not a lot you can mix with it. Maybe some vodka and cough syrup?

I noticed that on our power play the Kings pressured the perimeters hard. This should've left them exposed underneath but the team never made that adjustment. On the other hand, they had us moving around the ice chasing the puck. I definitely feel the team was outcoached today...

Here's the most likely scenario for the remainder of the season.

1. McPhee trades for a 2C who is really a 3C and does not make any further moves. He states, "There really wasn't anything out there that made sense to us. We not going to make a move just to make a move."
2. Caps finish 7 in the Eastern Conference.
3. Caps face Boston in the 1st round and lose in 5.
4. BB gets canned after the season.
5. The Caps promote Dean Evason to head coach.
5. McPhee doesn't get canned and Ted tells us we're almost there and just have hit a couple of speed bumps along the way to the Cup.
6. Dick Patrick finally breaks his silence and tells everyone McPhee has built a Stanley Cup team. They will win it all in 2012.

Of course, we all know we're getting the wool pulled over over eyes once more.

Smell the coffee George, pull the trigger "now" and bring in a no nonsense veteran coach. Let us know your balls are as big as they were when you were a hockey player.

Advise to Ted - No more spin on your "TedTakes"! We don't want to get buried in knee high buffalo chips.

@cstanton

Hendricks is the only guy who is playing with a sense of urgency and passion. I really watched intently at the phone booth the past 2 nights, because I really feel that another GM will blow this team up in the off season. Who's a keeper ? Hendricks , Carlson, Ovi, Backy, Varly. Not much else that I would miss on this team (Brads and Erskine should go to towns that will appreciate their passion!)Not sure if Green will ever hoist. He's talented, but a head case.

Sad situation ! Amazing that Ted and the fan base can't understand the source of the problems with this team !

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | February 13, 2011 12:44 AM | Report abuse

Stick a fork in the Kool Aiders. They're done ! Both of these western teams really exposed the Caps for what they are: over rated and lazy. Caps lost a lot of races to the puck and battles for the puck in both games. Semin was a "no show" in a critical set of home games.

Still can't believe people on this site think this is the greatest Caps team ever. Based on what ? How many shots you can knock down at Russia house ?

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | February 13, 2011 12:54 AM | Report abuse

@Cstanton

The funny thing is you're right. We got out worked in about 20 of our wins last year. That came home to roost in the playoffs. The hockey fans in this crowd could see that we were getting "outworked", and knew it was a huge problem. But, they just made fun of our insight AGAIN. Told us we were too negative.

Just watched highlights of Pens/Iles. Can we get back into the old Patrick Division ?

What size "laundry bill" would Gabby, Semin, Sarge, and Stecks have after watching that from the bench. Love the way Godard came off the bench. Loved the way the Isle from the AHL went after Jonson. Loved the way Johnson did not back down.

Good stuff !

Here's to the Caps getting toasted out west, so I can toast the firing of that blowhard BigBaby. The Caps are one road trip away from losing a loser coach and picking up a legit playoff coach.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | February 13, 2011 7:34 AM | Report abuse

I am not convinced they'll fire BB during the season. Granted it's time, but considering how slow GMGM is to identify, predict, decide, and execute moves...BB is probably safe until summer. He needs to go now, because the team has to be shaken up to show these players no more "business as usual".

Posted by: kcbrichmond | February 13, 2011 8:09 AM | Report abuse

@kcb, You may very well be right, but to anyone watching, this team has given up on BigBaby and his childish tirades. How did the team react to getting chewed out during the timeout? I think they gave up 2 more goals. Any gm could see that BB has to go, just to save this team from dropping out of the playoffs. They can play any team when they are up for the game (see Pens twice and TB), but when they freelance (ignoring the coach's system) any team can beat them. GMGM may have to go as well, but BB has to go NOW if they want to even make the playoffs. Another long skid (2 now and I bet 5 more on this roadtrip) will not even be their longest. While BB is out west, GMGM should be interviewing replacements. Dean Evanson may be a good alternative, but I think an outsider will be better. An outsider will be able to shake up everything without a history of the current malasie that would follow Evanson.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | February 13, 2011 8:27 AM | Report abuse

@JIM
I agree. At some point GMGM has to realize that he's next on the list, so he better toss someone else (BB) overboard first. I hope its not Evanson or Woods as interim coach.

When BB goes into his tirades the team usually plays flatter. A change has to be made asap to change direction. The direction they're heading now is not up. It's really quite a shame to see a team with so much promise play so poorly. It still comes back to not making any significant changes after the Montreal debacle...

-------------------------------------------------------------

Actually at some point Leonsis has to realize that he has to let McPhee go. Till that happens, nothing's gonna change with this team.

Posted by: joek443 | February 13, 2011 8:59 AM | Report abuse

The issue is not and I repeat not Woods or Evanson's fault. BB sets the direction. Both of these guys would do some things differently in my opinion. The defense looks great and so does penalty killing. PP and O looks depressing right now. BB will stay the rest of the season. Ted is a loyal guy and will give him that much time to figure it out.
