I'm smelling a big night from OV and Greener. Held mostly silent so far but it's time to unleash the fury!

Looks like Vegas and everybody else likes the caps as well. We are the favorites tonight at -135. Who's the better team? Vegas knows.

i gotta tell you, i don't much like these videos. can't watch em at work. like reading better that watching anyhow. fear change.

maybe transcripts could also be posted?

I love the Capitals Insider and everything Tarik and the team contribute...

Are the video updates a bit much, or is it just me? I much prefer written entries. If they were produced differently, maybe like Mike Vogel's stuff on the Caps website, it would be great...but a reporter in front of his laptop in a hotel room or office isn't very reminds me of people editorializing on youtube. And it's not that Tarik isn't telegenic (Mike Wise is definitely not telegenic), it just takes a little bit away from the authenticity of his reporting. It's probably pretty stressful to put it together too...written script...several takes.

Please don't take offense! I love the blog...just putting out a viewpoint on the content.

i have to agree on the notes vs. video. i just am not a fan of the video feed. impressive that its done and for that matter done pretty well. but i like the notes/bullet points more.

Posted by: hsk8er6 | April 22, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

I agree, no videos, at work I cannot use the speakers. So the only way I can get my Caps info is to read.

Posted by: Kevin9149 | April 22, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

I also agree with the video comments. Can't watch them at work and by the time I am home, CAPS CAPS CAPS!! Tarik, I REALLY appreciate this blog and all the great coverage, but I would say that copy over video is the way to go. It might be poll time.

Maybe you can take the camera and sit on the visitors bench during the rags practices. Either that or you could provide the caps with some clear video footage from MSG.

Regarding the videos, is the Washington Post doing the American economic system a favor? People want written materials so that they can NOT do the work they're paid for, while newspapers go digital with more cutting edge multimedia content because they're having trouble selling the written word. Now that is one hell of a catch-22.

Posted by: oo7 | April 22, 2009 3:36 PM | Report abuse

The games keep getting bigger. I think it's time for scores from Backstrom, Ovi, and Bradley on a rebound or some such. I don't see Green scoring, not sure what the deal with him is. I'm still thinking it's some injury or illness.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

if the video's had more production value then I would consider them 'cutting edge multimedia'... Capitals Insider is valuable because of his access to the team and his timely posts

Posted by: sroessle | April 22, 2009 3:47 PM | Report abuse

I agree with saintex. I have this feeling that Ovie will break out tonight and score 2 goals, kinda like game 6 of last year.

It'd be awesome if Green broke out of his little slump and scored tonight. That would be a huge advantage for us. GO CAPS!!

Posted by: KAS2 | April 22, 2009 4:29 PM | Report abuse

I also have a hunch that Ovie will break out and that we will win, but I am so nervous. So much seems to be riding on Varly, whom I consider on his way to greatness, but what if he has an off-night? Does he have to have a shut-out or just one goal against for us to win? How solidly are we into the playoff mode?

I can't quite remember last year. When we switched to playoff mode, did we sustain it through the last game or did we go back and forth. I seem to remember that once we were "on," we remained "on." Can someone remind me?

Posted by: caraveli | April 22, 2009 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, I love your site and i love everything you do for us Fans!!! But, i have to agree with some other posts. I would much rather read your posts rather than the view the videos. If I am away from my computer i can pull up your site on my phone and still read the insider. I am unable to view the videos on my phone and at work. Once again, i love the site and all the information.

Lets go CAPS!! Bring it!!

Well, folks. I am off to the big bad MSG for the game. Here's to a big Caps win and for me not getting too much thrown at me. I wonder if they are giving out car batteries for the fans to throw out onto the ice?

Let's Go Caps!

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | April 22, 2009 4:37 PM | Report abuse

It seems that last year we were outshot. This is from the 5th game recap?

"In the four games in this series, the Capitals have 111 shots on goal. They have had 85 shots blocked and have missed the net with 62 of their tries. For the series, Washington has gotten just 43% of its intended shots on goal. The Caps got 47% of their shots on net in Thursday’s game."

Can someone tell me how this year compares to last year and if you see any hope in the comparison?

Posted by: caraveli | April 22, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Big key to winning the game.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Haven't you read how he changed the last game and was one of the reasons the Caps won?

Posted by: hock1 | April 22, 2009 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Going into game 5 last year we had lost 2 straight, and felt like we were down and out...The Flyers and their fans felt the upper hand coming and we ended up losing in OT.

It turned out to be the difference....I can see much of the same with tonights game..the glimmer of hope is that we won the last game, and should feel more confident tonight then we did last year...

Lets also not forget how much better we are this year then we've got that going for us.

Posted by: SA-Town | April 22, 2009 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Im sorry...I meant to say going into game 4.

Were you at the game at msg on Monday? Were there a good number of Caps fans there?

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | April 22, 2009 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Not sure how much is riding on Varly...we didn't win 1-0, we won 4-0. Probably should have put a couple more in besides. We just need solid play in net, not spectacular.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 22, 2009 5:01 PM | Report abuse

I have to agree with some of the comments regarding video posts. I much prefer written posts than videos. Thanks Tarik for all your work. Btw: love the chat format during game time.

Posted by: guer_j | April 22, 2009 5:04 PM | Report abuse

those 2.5 minutes brash played made all the difference. he took orr off on coincidental minors and that was huge!

but seriously, i really think his swipe at lundquist early had a effect. mostly on his teammates. everyone was talking about the team neading leadership and grid going into game 3. nobody's got more grit than him and according to BB he's good in the locker room. i'll take him in the lineup.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | April 22, 2009 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Is it just me or does Boyd Gordon look erily similar to Drury?

Posted by: superpaqman | April 22, 2009 5:09 PM | Report abuse

If Brash plays he is going to put the Caps a man down more than once and the rangers only need to score a goal or two to make it very difficult for the Caps to win.

I am also hoping that BB demotes Green from the 1st pp unit and that he re-unites 8-19-28 before the game gets out of hand. If BB listens to me - obviously he should - I still see the Caps winning the next two games and the last game at home.

BB - Listen to me. Get Clark and Nyls back in the game, you will have four complete lines capable of scoring.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 5:11 PM | Report abuse

I've been holding my tongue on this and other blogs, but I'd like to chime in and add to the sentiment of preference for written posts, for the following reasons:

1. Tarik is a good writer. I enjoy reading his work. He's good in interviews and on video, but I'm a print media guy.

2. There are multimedia restrictions at work that prevent me from streaming audio or video.

3. It's not ADA compliant. Not that I need it to be; it's a philosophical thing.

Posted by: JohninMpls | April 22, 2009 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Nyls style doesn't fit in well with most of our players. They like a north-south style, Nyls likes circles. Adding Nyls won't do anything because I want a line that can crash the net. Clark can crash the net.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 5:14 PM | Report abuse

I think somebody started hitting the sauce early today.

Posted by: ludeman95 | April 22, 2009 5:21 PM | Report abuse

sheesh, I wasn't nervous until I checked here. Lets Go Caps!

Posted by: bluejeener1 | April 22, 2009 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Let me disagree with you a bit. I think Nyls adds a lot to the team, I don't think the problem is the players as much as BB never taking advantage of his playing abilities which is play making - by that I mean, BB kept constantly changed his linemates, the worst thing you can do to a playmaker. In any case, I do agree that he does not fit well with the team, for the reasons I just gave, but I still think that having him and Clark, even if they play a few minutes and have a minor role, it will give BB another line that is capable of scoring. Right now our fourth line is barely playing and contributing almos nothing but bench space.
By the way, I really dislike the "circles" label (I know that is my problem) because what people are watching is someone with control of the puck looking for linemates to setup. It is the kind of play that won the third game, moving the puck, rotating, opening lanes; shots from downtown is not going to beat Lundqvist, it creates a solo attitude, and linemates stop looking for each other.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Come on Caps, don't let us down!!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Did you not watch the game?

Our 4th line was buzzing and created a ton of forecheck pressure. 4th lines aren't necessarily supposed to score.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 5:33 PM | Report abuse

And I am just designating the difference between the north-south style of play and the other style. If the label bothers you, call it Smircles then. It's a very traditional difference. Nyls works well with guys like Jagr.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 5:35 PM | Report abuse

opita1, no disrespect, but I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to Nylander. He hasn't done anything all season, and then in two playoff games he refused to take a hit to make a play. He's played with everybody on this team and hasn't gotten the job done. I figured he was injured at one point, and maybe his shoulder is still a problem, but at his pay rate, what he's produced is unacceptable. He was meant to make his linemates better, but he hasn't because he gives up on a lot of shifts. His days in a Caps jersey should be over.

Posted by: oo7 | April 22, 2009 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: richmondphil

kind of like the shmishmorshmin clinic?

Posted by: oo7 | April 22, 2009 5:38 PM | Report abuse

I used to be a Nyls defender but he's made that job way too hard. The Caps definitely like to go into the zone with speed and he seems to kill the momentum. His passes have not been crisp either. I like the guy but he doesn't seem to fit in.

Opita1 is being too nice to Nylander. The game in New Jersey where he scored 2 goals is the only game I remember him even being a factor in. Come on, let's be real, Nylander has done zilch this year.

It might just be me but I think Nylander just doesn't try hard and he doesn't seem to really care.. he doesn't play with any fire and seems to just be skating around.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 5:49 PM | Report abuse

I guess you did not understand one crap of what I said. That is cool. leave it at that.
But, if you think 1 shot on net by Bradlee as well as one by Brahseer in a combined 9 to 10 minutes of play is great performance, then my friend, I think I was giving you too much credit of hockey knowledge.
As I said the "circles" label I do not like and it is my problem, but your reponse well ... enough said.

Hope you're right, _828! ;)

I couldn't agree more and that's exactly what I've been saying. Varly doesn't need to be brilliant (like he has been). He just needs to be solid. I think we have a very strong chance of winning if he gives up 2 or less and still a pretty good chance if he gives up 3. If he gives up more than that then we need a lot of offense to be clicking. Facing this Rangers team (where none of their players even had as much as 60 points in the season), I don't see him giving up more than 1 or 2 so like I've been saying.... Caps in 6!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 22, 2009 5:58 PM | Report abuse

oo7, no disrespect taken, but believe it or not you and I are seeing some things the same way, although, we might interpret them differently.

"He hasn't done anything all season" - yes he could have been better.

"and then in two playoff games he refused to take a hit to make a play." - This is just your supposition, isn't it? I don't argue those, I just don't agree.

"He's played with everybody on this team and hasn't gotten the job done." We are in total agreement there, and that is part of the problem, BB kept on changing his line mates which is the worse thing you can do to a playmaker, I have said that all along.

"I figured he was injured at one point, and maybe his shoulder is still a problem, but at his pay rate, what he's produced is unacceptable." Meaningless. That is for management to decided, that is their problem, I only talk about what happens on the ice.

"He was meant to make his linemates better," I agree.

"but he hasn't because he gives up on a lot of shifts." Disagree. I have given my reasons above, your reasons seems to be a conjecture.

"His days in a Caps jersey should be over."
I agree that he is days as a Cap are probably over.

Posted by: dcsportsfan13 | April 22, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

opita, I don't think it's conjecture. In game 2 for instance, he let the puck go to avoid a hit in the offensive zone and the puck entered the neutral. the rangers took the puck and rushed up ice. nylander made no effort to get back in the play or catch up. this, in one swoop, he didn't take a hit to keep the puck in the offensive zone, and gave up ok the shift by not back checking or making even a half hearted attempt to redeem himself. that has been characteristic all season. he doesn't stay on a line because his passes are soft, his shots weak, and his linemates do better when he's not around. are flash and fehr great? no, but he does nothing to make them better and at his salary he should try to do more than collect a pay check. he has no fight and that's why he's not sticking. maybe he isn't talking about how much he hurts, I dunno, all I know is the coach isn't sitting him because of supposition or conjecture. hrs being sat because he's offered nothing that can't be replaced by someone who wants it more.
as always, jmho.

I wish I knew DC13. I don't know. Did you try in their portal? Or what about versus? I know during the season had a PPV type of thing where you could purchase it for a 1 time purchase, or maybe it was Try those and hopefully you'll get it.
