Can't watch the video. Can someone break it down, please?

Posted by: FancyDan | May 8, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

FancyDan:

Just repeating earlier posts about Semin sitting out 2 straight days but OV saying Semin will play.

Beagle being called up and the effects throughout the lineup with Flash going to 4th line.

Wrap up of OV threat

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | May 8, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

What's with these video posts?!!! Most of us are at work, when watching a video in the middle of a work day is....uh....um....difficult.

Please post a breakdown.

Posted by: cfrazier91 | May 8, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

If you've read the last 3-4 posts then there is no new information in the video:

-Semin doesn't skate (Ovi says he'll play)
-Beagle is called up
-Ovi gets death threat

That's about it.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

I had to pull out the ear buds and risk watching it in the office. He covered nothing new. The thought of them breaking some news that Semin would sit was enough to get me to listen at my desk. Luckily, there is no definitive word that Semin is out. That slash the other night is just one more missed call that the refs should hear about.

Go Caps!

A breakout game is due. ROCK THE READ AND UNLEASH THE FURY in the Igloo!!

Posted by: cfrazier91 | May 8, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

How bout' a break out game for Greenie tonight??!! =)

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 2:53 PM | Report abuse

We need someone to hack into the Igloo scoreboard computers and run the Unless the Fury video.......now that would be funny.

Posted by: RichC3 | May 8, 2009 2:55 PM | Report abuse

RichC3-

Amazing. Someone get on that.

You know what video I really miss seeing at Verizon? The Meatloaf "I'll do anything for love, but I won't do that". I loved that one. And would be perfect for the playoffs.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 8, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

How about Goals from Laich and Green tonight? That would be sweet. ...and another from Backstrom too.

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 8, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

@rachel
Hope you're right about Greenie. I predicted a goal from Semin last game, and even though that didn't work out, I'm still sticking with Sasha to have a good game tonight.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 3:01 PM | Report abuse

I would take goals by anyone from anywhere!! Go Caps.

Posted by: Richmondcapsfan | May 8, 2009 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 3:04 PM | Report abuse

I have also predicted that Semin is due for one of those nights where the media junkies start questioning which Alex is actually number 1 blah blah blah. I am sure number 8 would not mind.

Posted by: Richmondcapsfan | May 8, 2009 3:05 PM | Report abuse

wait a second, of course Semin didn't skate. It was a no meeting, no skate day.

You know Semin is lacing them up tonite!!

Posted by: cfrazier91 | May 8, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

ejohnsto: And goals from Fedorov, Flash, OV, Gordon, Steckel, Brads, Kozlov, Mo, Pothier, Poti would be sweet too. Haha. No seriously, it doesn't matter who scores just as long as the Caps score a lot and we win.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 3:09 PM | Report abuse

meatloaf?! no thanks!!
Remember those terrible hockey warrior NHL commercials last year? Ugh. I don't know why they don't bring back the mullet guys from a few years back. They wee funny. And that crazy goalie who wore hid gear everywhere was a riot. I loved the whole "I hate brindamour" thing.
All I've seen from VS are "Ny won the cup!" and "Pittsburgh! Rah Rah rah!" Both Caps opponents. Conspiracy? hmm...

Posted by: oo7 | May 8, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

I’m gonna have to agree with some of the other posters. Video updates are great… as a novelty. But it’s the middle of the friggin’ workday! Please just break the stuff down or link us to somebody else’s information. The video pieces are best used as supplemental material.

Moose33: Fantastic pic. =)

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

I still find it funny they do a white-out in the stands there and the Caps are wearing the white.

Posted by: rh71 | May 8, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

I was just talking to a co-worker about tonight's game and we settled on a couple of (likely obvious) keys:

- Passing. Dear God, passing needs to improve by leaps and bounds. Our offense requires it to be effective.

-No more Penguin parties in front of our net. Everyone needs to be dilligent in clearing that [stuff] out from in front of Varly

-I think Semin needs a good night, pref. a goal early to get him going.

-A contribution from "someone else" like a Bradley or a Steckel or what have you. Not even like Brooksie or Feds, like a real "someone else" like Flash or something.

Posted by: VTDuffman | May 8, 2009 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Yep, actually an OV hat trick in Pitt would be funny. Just rub some salt in an open wound.

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 8, 2009 3:16 PM | Report abuse

rh71-

They all looked like our fans!! Honestly, how stupid. At least wear yellow, baby blues, or something Pens exclusive. And the fact that they had to give the shirt out for free- how lazy is your fan base if you have to give them the color you want them to wear?

Posted by: mrszilla | May 8, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

@VTDuff

Good observations...

I actually believe that when Kozlov has command of the puck, and room to skate, good things happen for Ovie or whoever is on his line...

Posted by: SA-Town | May 8, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

But a black out would be just hideous.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

The issue with Semin could be his back. The Pens have made a point to work his lower back hard everytime they get him in the corners. They know he had trouble during the season and I would not be surprised that that is one of the things that they have in their game plan. Watch them when he is trying to control the puck against the boards. The cross checks to Semin's lower back are relentless.

Posted by: _Mark | May 8, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Love ya Tarik, and I know you're not a video journalist, but you might wanna work on eliminating or at least reducing the "uh's" and "ah's" when you speak. Just a tip

Posted by: apollak8 | May 8, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

Bears and Caps tonight... at least the Bears have Alzner back.
On Beags, he is AMAZING at blocking shots. He'll go out occasionally as a second line PK. He hadn't played a while back in the beginning of the season because of a concussion, but his performance wasn't hindered by it. He's pretty strong on the forecheck, too.
I really hope my prediction of Caps in 5 is right... They've screwed up for one game, now they can jump right back onto their A-game and win these next two games!

Posted by: 4RBears | May 8, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse

I hope its Caps in 5 because I just picked up tix for tomorrow's game!!

Posted by: CheckingLine | May 8, 2009 3:34 PM | Report abuse

At least these videos are not like Jason Reid's over on the Redskins Insider, where he looks like he's being held hostage somewhere!

Posted by: djordan1 | May 8, 2009 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Ok then, the Caps need to hand out shirt that are white on one side and black on the other. When the Caps are shoting at one end then the other end where Black so the goalie can not see the shots and then turn them around when we switch ends. That should make up for what ever the refs can do.

Posted by: RichC3 | May 8, 2009 3:52 PM | Report abuse

They almost won in Washington WITHOUT Malkin playing at his best. Now that they have all their guys going, they are not going to lose a game.

Posted by: SC87

lol! It's kinda like how we almost beat the Pens with our entire team playing badly.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 4:02 PM | Report abuse

Re the whiteouts:
I was thinking that last year during the playoffs the Pens did the whiteout thing and Sid complained that all the white created too much of a glare in the building. Does anyone else remember that? Or am I hallucinating?

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | May 8, 2009 4:21 PM | Report abuse

For the whiteout subject, I have it from an inside source (the to-be father-in-law) that the whiteouts have to do with the fact that its called the "Igloo" so an igloo is white and they wear white to be a part of that, which I personally think is a load of bs, but to each his/her/its own

Posted by: superpaqman | May 8, 2009 4:28 PM | Report abuse

YAWN......

Well if OV gets another hat trick Syd will probably get his wish of not a lot of hats being thrown on the ice. Poor guy, can you imagine having to ask the refs to have fans stop throwing hats IN YOUR OWN RINK?

Posted by: pokerface1208 | May 8, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

I'm not concerned about tonight. The reason we looked so bad Wed night is because Pitt was pressed and they knew they were done if we won that game. Even with Pitt giving their very best 60+ minute effort it was barely enough to win. 2 points here: 1- Pitt will not be able to play that type of game again for 60 minutes 2- we will have a better game. 1 + 2 = a Caps win in game 4. Tomorrow's game WILL have the series on the line.

I def saw a bunch of Caps fans there last time, and I would bet the Caps fans tonight wear hats. Just in case. Not the monsoon of hats from VC but maybe they can still throw them at a slow pace so it takes longer :)

BTW I got a text from my Rags friend when the hat trick happened saying: "SMART fans would know not to throw hats because it breaks up the momentum" ahahaha oh rags fans... still trying to pretend they are in on the action.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 8, 2009 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, and I'm sure Rags fans wouldn't have thrown out any hats had Drury or Gomez knew where the net was in MSG.

I haven't heard of anything about the mood and mental state of the team today. Maybe I missed it but since I check in every 15 seconds, that's probably unlikely.

I think this would be more informative than rehashing death threats and call-ups. Not ragging on the coverage, just sayin'...

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 5:02 PM | Report abuse

I agree. I'm always wanting to hear something about what's going through their heads on the day of the game. This is a very mental sport and if we know this team like I think we know this team then they'll be upbeat and condident focussing on the task at hand. I just wish all our players had the same passion and determination OV does. OV thinks he failed if we don't win every game.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | May 8, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

I was just talking to a Caps fan about how spoiled we are that we have Ovie... I forget what its even like to have a team without a guy like him (ie a guy who will do literally everything and anything needed to win). He def missed some big shots last game, I'm sure he's pissed and ready to win.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 8, 2009 5:43 PM | Report abuse

@tess2201

Hope you're right about Sasha scoring a goal. Only problem, will he be playing tonight since he didn't skate this morning?

I fear that Beagle was called up -- to replace Semin.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 8, 2009 5:51 PM | Report abuse

"I fear that Beagle was called up -- to replace Semin."

My mind can't even go there. (Would Ovie really lie to us through his tooth?)

Posted by: mrszilla | May 8, 2009 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Beagle would be a callup to be an enforcer-type to protect Varlamov, not a replacement for Semin.

In Hershey, Beagle has shown amazing levels of grit and determination, and he's not afraid to drop the gloves. I consider his callup a message to the referees: "If you won't protect our goalie... we will!"

Posted by: irockthered | May 8, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

I'm curious about the lines. Why is Bruce kind of taking apart the "Energy Line" of Brooksy, Stecks, and Brads? I noticed last game that they didn't seem to play much together. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but that's what it looked like. I really liked that line and think they could still do well for us.

Posted by: SarahM28 | May 8, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Chris Clark has shown a LOT of rust. I would be surprised to see him continue to stay in the lineup for the Caps. Expecting him to come back so quickly was wishful thinking in retrospect. He has had ZERO impact and has not been a presence in front of the goal where you would expect him to be.

Posted by: leopard09 | May 8, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Beagle? Don't we have anyone named Bulldog or Doberman?
I kid cuz I drink...

Posted by: oo7 | May 8, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Beagle is a north south player, physical, fast, good with the puck. He's like a quicker and more skilled version of Matt Bradley. Which for me is EXACTLY what we need more of in our lineup. We need forecheckers and players willing to win puck battles, not the floaters that we have seen so far in this series.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

He was very good in his first game back at the end of the season. Because he wasn't tentative. Now he's overthinking stuff.
Posted by: leopard09 | May 8, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Clarkie has Capsitis. Which is basically, if you're a grinder on this team and you take a couple of penalties, you get tentative about playing your style. He hasn't finished a single check since his elbowing call a few games ago. He's afraid to hit anyone and battle too hard in case he gets another penalty.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

@mrszilla

I hope Semin will play (and that Ovi is right on that subject). I consider Ovi to be a reliable source on Semin.

We certainly need a gritty winger like Beagle.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 8, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Well we need to get more physical.. but that's a catch 22 because of the discrepency in the penalties that's being called against us. But that's how you slow a team like them down. I hope Beagle sets a tone early. We've missed Brash in this series as well.

Posted by: visionof75 | May 8, 2009 6:27 PM | Report abuse

Semin is always inconsistent, with burst of brilliance followed by penalty-ridden bad games, injuries and various illnesses and mysterious mood swings. This is nothing new. If he was consistent, we would have another Ovechkin or something like the Malkin-Crosby duo.

I am so nervous about tonight not knowing which team will show up: the brilliant, moderate or weak Caps?

Do you think that Pens' fans are similarly confused? To me it looks like there is a level of consistency they can expect.

Could someone PLEASE give me their opinion on the consistency factor? Am I the only one who is that mystified and uneasy about it?

Posted by: caraveli | May 8, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

So nervous... Let's go Caps!!!!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Have FAITH. We had won 5 games in a row (Caps Playoff record) and I thought we would probably drop game 3 and if not we would drop game 4. They should bounce back tonight. That said, they might come out a little flat in the first, but as long as they make sure the scoreboard doesn't reflect that (like they have in other recent periods against the Pens), they should be fine once they find their stride. I'm positive they'll win tonight, Semin or no Semin. LETS GO CAPS!!!
