Video: Gonchar, Lines and More

Tarik got to the Verizon Center press box a little early today -- too excited for Game 7, maybe? -- and recorded a new webcam update. He talks about Sergei Gonchar's status ("I'm expecting him to go"), Bruce Boudreau's lines (the Laich-Steckel-Bradley combo should return) and more on the Mike Green stick saga. Enjoy:

bhound69: I'm not saying that Ted made a mistake purging contracts. I am just stating the fact that Jagr didn't ask to leave, Witt and Gonchar, both requested to leave. Unlike Witt, Gonchar was asked if he'd stay even after he requested to be moved, for the rebuild. We already had the young Semin, and with prospects Ovechkin and Malkin (1 and 2 the same year) both being Russian, his leadership and influence would have helped immensely with young Russians in the line-up. Gonchar still requested to be moved. That's why I can't stand Gonchar. He is in a good situation now, but he went to Boston and then signed with Pittsburgh, who was just as bad as the Caps, after the lockout.

@Mrszilla: I agree, I thought for sure the Caps would bring Bondra back when his value went down. I sure would have liked to see him play his last game here in Washington. I met him on a couple of occasions because his son played for Team MD with a friend of mine and Bondra was a humble and appreciative guy when I told him he was just as big to us Caps fans as Ovechkin is now. He simply smiled and said thanks.

dragging my post from the last thread over here:

Still sad about how we lost Bondra. I'll never really get over losing him or Kolzig...players who actually wanted to retire with us when we were at our worst and they could have done better (at the time at least). Stand up guys.

Ted's own son refused to speak to him for weeks after Bondra was traded.

Peter seems to have put it behind him and accepted it for what it was. I see him at games frequently, and he does fan signings and charity events for the Caps.

also re: last post

fanohock1-

Yea that whole situation was just awful. I will totally admit that I cried when I found out Bondra was being traded. Didn't cry after Kolzig but only because I had already felt betrayed, it wasn't as much of a surprise. That's the one thing I can't stand about prof sports, there is so little loyalty. These guys stated a million times "We don't want to leave" and they were forced out. Gonch on the other hand seemed to buy the first ticket out. That's why we "whoop" him. I don't think anyone would even "whoop" bondra or kolzig, or at least I've never witnessed it. We "whoop" those we no longer respect.

But man, Bondra was the man. He totally was our superstar. I still have his bobblehead, tape on his nose and all.

Bondra still lives in Annapolis. He'll always be a CAP! Love #12

Posted by: bhound69 | May 13, 2009 2:25 PM | Report abuse

And I'll still always hate Jagr. What a waste of space and money. Guy who had ST next to us called him the "antichrist" from week 3 or so, and at first I defended Jagr. When he kept literally taking naps on the ice, I joined in on the chant. And I blame him for sucking up all the money so we couldn't keep the people we wanted to keep. Nor can I forgive him after I read an interview with him (after leaving the Caps) where he explained he was bad in DC because he was depressed after HE broke up with his SUPERMODEL GIRLFRIEND. Worst. excuse. ever.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 13, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

from last:

I'm newer to the area so I wasn't here, nor did I ever imagine living here, so Bondra is just a name and some fantastic numbers to me. I did look it up a few months back and saw that the trade brought Brooks Laich to D.C. and that isn't all bad. Bondra was toward the end of his career - I think he only played 100 or so more games - and Brooks may be our next captain. It sucks to see your heroes leave your team but sometimes it works out alright, or at least not as bad as the initial pain. For what that's worth.

Posted by: saintex | May 13, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

What???? The Model with hairy armpits?? Ohhhh yeaahhhhhh.....I 'd be depressed too.

Posted by: bhound69 | May 13, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

If Gonchar plays he might be a little more prone to turning over the puck, especially if we take away his time and space. Maybe a shortie in the offing?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 13, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Bondra WAS at the end of his career and if memory serves me, we couldn't afford him, he wanted a multi-year contract, and was not willing to go that route for peanuts, which was all we could afford to a retiring superstar.

Posted by: capsfantess | May 13, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Bondra was at the end of his playing career, but for life long Caps fans, it was like if Cal Ripken had been traded from Baltimore at the end. Painful.

I was living in Wisconsin at the time and I remember my boyfriend-now-husband calling me over to the TV "Because some guy is crying about getting traded!" I ran in and my jaw promptly hit the floor. "But...but...but, it's Peter Bondra!!!!! [cue wailing like Sidney Crosby after a light tap]"

Posted by: RedBirdie | May 13, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

A friend and I wore Bondra out on a tennis court once. He liked to play alone at one end while we, at the other end, hit the ball from side to side. He lasted a pretty long time if I recall correctly.

I fully agree. It makes me want to jump out of my skin when I watch them in their own zone in this series... Maybe they should try shorter, higher percentage passes out of the zone. Tired seeing the bounce pass off the boards miss and the pens gather it in the neutral zone.

Reading that TSN article when Bondra found out he was traded is sad to read. He came to practice with his kids and saw McPhee there and knew he was gone.

LONG LIVE BONDRA. WIN THIS GAME FOR HIM.

mrszilla: Yeah, same. I definitely freak out/worry more than I can enjoy the game! And in this series, it's been so tight you can't relax. Every game has been so close and I expect the same tonight. =( I want to blow them out for my own sake. I freak out for 2 1/2 hours straight. And maybe more with OT.

@richmondphil

Amen. Bondra was the whole reason why I fell in love with the caps when I was 5. And the day he left was the worst day ever.. Then we got Ovechkin! Makes up for it i'd say even though I still wish he came back to play his final game with us..

I hope we come out strong and show the Pens why we were the second seed this year!

Lets go CAPS!

I can't go 5 minutes without looking at the clock. I hope we wrap this up in the first period so that I'm not a wreck at work for the next 4 hours! (I'm on the west coast)

GO CAPS!

Go Caps!

I wore my Caps hat to work today but cannot wear it on the job so left it on my desk. One of my staff, who is a Pens fan wrapped it up in Toilet Paper. So I fired him! LOL

Go Caps!

I've got 30 more minutes till I get out!! It's within reach!! Let's go boys, play the way we know you all can! Win the (recently created) Bondra (and Zilla!) tribute game! Do it for all the people who believed in the Caps for all those dark years!!
Get rid of the curse!
LET'S GO CAPS!

I live in Cheyenne and dont have many options of where to watch the Caps. Last time I went to the usual, it turns out that the bartender was a Pens fan and I am positive she is a jinx.

I dont know what to do. I skipped game 6 figuring If I didnt watch it would be an epic game that the Caps would win and I would be furious with myself for not watching, but I knew they would win.

Im conflicted

Tarik -- way out of town rabid fan here. Question kudos and request. I love that your doing video updates. But pregame I usually get pumped by by well... ha listening to The Zambonis pregame lately and I'd LOVE to just read your report pregame. I always come back and watch the videos. But like an intern to transcribe for you to post for us with rituals that involve using our ears for most of pre-puck drop time. I also wasn]t home at 2 so I'm trying to grab all the bandwidth in the house to get the podcasts from the boys too. I'm dying to know if Clark will be dressed, Capitals have held their own more than enough physically or Gill is somehow getting himself in checK? Orpiks has shown a bit of his true colors but he sees a new team who is physical and he can't push around like before... loving it. So while I love Brash ---- I listen to Hershey on streaming radio (ted? can you make tv streaming for us long range fans? next year) I'd LOVE to see Aucoin if he up to it. Would change the dynamic just enough I think for one of the two or three special Caps suprises that will sink this game 7 to what I hope is Carolina... I kinda like Boston though I know Caps dominate them... but I HATE the 'Canes and Ward et all showed their cracks finally last night. Under Maurice when I worked there --- they didn't recover for next gm. Esp gm 7 in Boston. So guess...

Anyhow Tarik I'd LOVE old school transcripts if that can happen. And do you know where Team Russia is having their July camp? I follow as much Russian hockey as I can so being just over the border from quite a few IIHF rinks in Buffalo --- I'm kinda dreaming and hoping. Bykov is my #2 coach after Gabbie.

Thanks and rock that red. Time to sadly only get ready to go downstairs - not to Verizon... I think it's harder to not be there now that I have... and I say it's a super star show down or I'm getting non-stop texts from friends asking me 'who is that dude?' Monday I just bulk replied 'Laichy to Stecks man, get with it!' Not many teams roll 4 lines like Gabbie - this is why we see these guys have all the experience to come through right now - he's a genius. I wish he could gotten nominated for Jack Adams again... he's my vote for playoff coach for sure.

Should be a great game.

Do you guys think a Caps game would be less exciting if they still wore their old jerseys (the black one at home). Those jerseys just made games worse.

Capitals fans unite! Whether at the Verizon or in Pittsburgh or even on the West Coast, let's rock the Red. *sigh* Need to wait until I get home to catch the game on Versus. Here's hoping the Capitals come out swingin'...take out a few Penguins while we're at it. =P

Let's GOOO Caps!
