thanks! In the 2nd vid, green looks badaass on those drums :)

I was watching the game on NHL center ice and the first vid was shown on the dc/comcast feed. I'm not sure if the 2nd was shown for local viewers.

DrinkingPartner:
Yes, Backs was invisible - I did not even notice until well into the third period that he was playing!

So how disappointing was it that Huet did not play?!? I was certainly bummed. After watching how well Kubi played (in comparision to Huet's first few attempts between the posts for Chicago), I wonder if Huet is at risk of being sent down?!? Stranger things have happened ...

Ovie sure had a heck of a night - didn't they warn them not to wake the giant? GAME ON!!!

Thank goodness Jose shook it off - I was afraid that we were in for a looooong night!

Jurcina looked better. Hopefully he will keep it up. The D overall looked better - I think the team is finally (re-)geling.

I was at the video shoot (did you see me in the crowd?!? :-)) and Green actually seemed to be the least into it. When the stage portion was done Brooks and Jose stayed on stage and jammed while they were setting up for the outdoor shots. I was surprised that Green did not stay with them (I thought he and Brooks played together?); he just seemed put out by the while thing and probably interacted with the fans the least.

@Boo! - Don't forget Green had to go outside and practice driving the car! Not sure when you went oustide but that's what he was doing during the "jam session." I thought the opening vid wasn't bad, and I'm in it briefly too.

Posted by: Jill | October 12, 2008 12:26 AM | Report abuse

Backstrom was noticeably absent, I agree.

I was sooooo glad to see the D step up in the second and third periods. That was a different team that came on the ice.

Thought Laich played with real heart. Finally saw some nice checking by the Caps and the refs seemed to let both teams play, unlike last night.

Was one of OV's goals shot through the d-man's legs?! Goodness.

I also thought Feds had a pretty good game. He was flat in the last one, but I think he sparked some good mid-ice defense and smart play.

Anyhoo, go Caps!!

Did anyone else notice the slick new photos of the players as they were named in the starting line-up? Clearly the org has invested in a stylist, make-up artist, and pro photographer!

Thanks Tarik for the jumbletron vid, as I had to work.

I don't agree Backstrom was noticeably absent. He was quiet but still making smart plays all over the ice. Remember, he's a week behind because of his ankle issue and skills like passing and stick handling always take a while to catch up.

The guy I think is struggling and chasing the game is Captain Clark. He's got a lot of rust and I hope he can shake it.

And I don't know if it's rust or not but Jose's got holes I never new existed...not even on Kolzig. I hope he elevates because these softies are getting old already.

Otherwise a sturdy effort with a big couple of weeks ahead to see if this team is for real.

Posted by: Harry | October 12, 2008 10:34 AM | Report abuse

Softies aside, this team is a lot of fun to watch. In my opinion the Caps is the most talented team in the NHL - so much so that sometimes it's not necessarily a good thing: I saw some naivety on D yesterday, like trying to be cute when it was a clear-the-puck situation.

Anyway, but tests next week.

Verizon center was really cool yesterday :) ROCK THE RED!!

Jill:
Yeah but those guys stopped jammin' way before Greenie started driving that car. Do you remember when a bunch of people were beeping when Green was backing up? He didn't even crack a smile! (Although I did when he was talking to someone about what I assume was his concern about driving that car, because the guy responded by saying, "Do you want me to back it up for you?" :-)) BTW, did you notice that the transformation of the "Red Rockets" has begun? Everything was tight, shirts plunged lower and midriffs started to appear ... and I didn't see the token man anywhere. How many games do you think it will be before they are in the half-shirts and short shorts that were originally advertised?

Posted by: Boo! | October 12, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

I didn't realize that Cooke was now a Pen. That's too bad - and here I thought I liked that guy ... ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | October 12, 2008 11:21 AM | Report abuse

As one wiseguy in the crowd dryly noted, they should spend more time practicing defense instead of making music videos. Allowing 21 shots was a nice start.

Posted by: eric | October 12, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

eric:
Hey, they had a nice showing last night after a shaky start - let's give the guys some credit.

Speaking of defense, Smith played a great game last night despite having no D in front of him - 42 saves on 46 SOG and they still lost. It's no wonder that he broke his stick over the cross-bar. (Either that Olie really has been mentoring him ... ;-))

Posted by: Boo! | October 12, 2008 11:35 AM | Report abuse

Tarik, any chance you can post the video of the Unleash the Fury clip? Last night it was ridiculous I felt like everyone in unison said it.. really energized the team! :)

Posted by: Rock the Red | October 12, 2008 11:57 AM | Report abuse

One more thing about Green. At the Caps start of training camp he was one of the only Caps players to come over and sign autographs and he signed everyones items until there where none. In fact he was walking away when I noticed and came up. I shouted his name and he came back and signed a practice puck for me.

Posted by: Rock the Red | October 12, 2008 12:06 PM | Report abuse

what song was used in the rockstar video?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 12, 2008 12:24 PM | Report abuse

@ Boo! -- hmmm, maybe you are right about the timing. Green did seem a bit cranky, I hear him drop a couple of f-bombs and he kept checking his phone. BTW, that guy was the owner of the car...which likely explains his concern! :)

Yep, I noticed the Red Rockets' new unis, which are about what I'd expected. Those tame outfits during the pre-season weren't fooling anyone. It's funny you mentioned the token guy -- I mentioned his absence on the Caps boards today. I guess he wasn't secure enough in his maculinity to run around in a tight crop top and spandex pants.

@12:24 - It's a watered-down version of "Hell Yeah" by Rev Theory.

They showed the first one as they went to break on the broadcast last night.

Good game last night. Not a good first period, but they came back in the 2nd and 3rd and looked good.

Good stuff.

Posted by: nadir | October 12, 2008 12:51 PM | Report abuse

@Anonymous- The song is a heavily edited version of Hell Yeah by Rev Theory. Maybe not so heavily edited, but Hell is changed to yell.

My notes from the game. Scary first period. Although Flash hasn't scored in the regular season, it is just a matter of time if he keeps undressing the opposition with slick moves like that.

My question- Why do the play Brashear instead of giving Fehr a chance to prove himself. Either sink or swim. He'll never break out if he doesn't get to play. I don't think it is fair to him as a player. Either give Fehr his chance or waive him so he can go to a team that will.

Posted by: Caps 423 | October 12, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

I went to the game. What energy! It felt like a playoff game, not a regular season game for a team that just lost 7-4 to the Thrashers. JT had an awesome diving save in the first (inbetween the two stinkers). Green and OV were awesome. Laich and Flash were very, very good. Flash has really started to pick up his hustle game. Unfortunately, Backs and Semin looked pretty lazy. I was really surprised to see Semin had 4 shots. The defense looked iffy at first, but they really turned their game around. Loved the game!

Posted by: JIM | October 12, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

J. Crew?? No more "Alright, now look up, and glare at the camera"? Not sure how I feel about that. Guess I'd have to see them first. But then again, its pretty lame if they're not in a Caps sweater.
Got home late last night and watched the game (Thank you, DVR!). Only thing that kept me from pulling my hair out in the beginning was I knew the final score ahead of time. Glad the guys settled down after the first, although our PP needs to start clicking. This "0 for" mess needs to stop.

Boo! & Joe B,
I'm trying to make it up Dec. 18th vs St. Louis if we need to have an initiation ceremony. ;-D I tried telling my professor that I had to go home Monday for Canadian Thanksgiving so I could go to the game, but he shot that down.

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | October 12, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of the cheerleaders, the main girl was obnoxious with her hair bobbing.

OV on the PK was incredible -- he plays with so much skill and heart (if only Semin could play that way)

Posted by: JIM | October 12, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

@Caps 432

Easy - because if Brashear isn't out there, any team will be allowed to beat up our talent, unchallenged. It happened last year and there's no Bradley or Erskine that can stop it.

I'd like to give Flash one more month - he needs to prove that he can be effective against proven Ds (like next week against PIT). Yes he had some nice moves but he need to provide depts and goals. Otherwise, it's him that I'd replace with Fehr.

Posted by: mauree | October 12, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Thanks.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 12, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Flash hasn't disappointed me quite so much as last season. He's either more confident in his play or less confident in his future and is compensating. Still, I would also like to see Fehr given a chance. Maybe he plays Monday? I think Gordo might be this year's Emi. I just don't see him dressing most nights. Steck's faceoff % wasn't quite as good as his last year, but Stecks has the reach over him. Who else do you sit to put Gordo in the game?

Okay, the post-goal pics aren't that bad. They at least have a stick in some of them and it goes with the rock theme for the season. They're more Express for Men or D&G than J. Crew.

@capsnut,

as you may know, I do not make coverage decisions. I do not tell assign other reporters to write sidebars or columns.

practice today was cancelled. But I just got off the phone with Dave Steckel, who is off to a solid start (except for the back-to-back tripping penalties last night). I'm writing a little about him for tomorrow's paper.

Tarik:
Did you think Steck's tripping penalties were legit?

Posted by: Boo! | October 12, 2008 2:14 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunately, yes. they were legit. here's what he said:

“As soon as his hand went up, I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I have to go back? Again?” Steckel said with a laugh yesterday, which was an off day for the players. “I was sweating in the penalty box, that’s for sure.”

Jill:
Yeah, when we saw the unis my friend said, "Well what the heck is the guy gonna wear?" That's when we realized that he was not in the house! :-) Funny that the guy Green was talking to owned the car - makes sense now!! Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Green is a bad guy, I just don't think he was into the shoot, for whatever reason (if he was looking at his cell a lot and dropping f-bombs, it could have been any one of a number of personal reasons - we've all been there!).

Caps 423:
That's a tough call - they want Brash because he is the enforcer (Fehr is not). Besides, the 'it's not fair' card could be said about lots of players a lot of time (for example, Laing and Emmi during parts of last season). It's a catch 22.

JMU:
The pics are not that bad, and I don't think they are intended for the female fan base. There is a lot of leather - I think they are trying to make them look tough. It is more JCrew meets Abercrombie Fitch at a biker bar. I actually think they're pretty cool, and they tie in well with the opening video. If you want to see a couple, shoot me an email (Sombrero Guy - keeper of the CI email addresses - has my address).

Posted by: Boo! | October 12, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Tarik. Even though I was there, I did not see Steck's second tripping penalty! I was looking at the other end of the ice and all of the sudden he was headed back to the box. I was totally confused! :-)

flash was awesome last nite...that little quentin laing move, the deke through the d's skates, that last slap shot. i think jose maybe needed a game to start shaky and regain control and make a couple epic saves to boost his confidence, nows hes got the big saves down hopefully he gets the routine ones soon...i agree maybe fehr or gordo couldve gotten a spot on line 4 instead of brash, theres no one on the hawks that brads or erskine couldnt have handled but whatever, our fourth line was awesome last nite, glad i took the trek from NYC

@ JIM

Gee, some issues with Semin? He leads the team in points and has been showing some awesome hustle. He is also playing smart and not taking lazy penalties. And playing on the PK. So, what's not to like?

It's great to not have to worry about being down a goal or two or three. I know we can come back. But that way of playing is SO last year. Let's get a lead and see if we can hold it. Of course, two games does not a season make.

Huge game v. Vancouver tomorrow night. What a string of goalies we are facing to start the season. Well, heaven help the opposing goalie who is having an off night. We could score 15. What is the record for goals scored by one team in a regulation game?

GO CAPS!

I saw some of the pictures on Facebook this morning. I'm certainly not going to complain about them. And I agree with lindskl32 too.
I'm watching the Canucks-Flames game from yesterday. The Canucks had numerous chances with Kipper out of position on the rebound and couldn't convert. I'm talking blatantly missing an open net. Overall, a pretty high-energy game on both sides. Our PP better improve by Monday if the Canucks plan on spending that much time in the box again.

Apparently, there's a new helmet circulating the Caps locker room. And no, this one's not pink. Or a hockey helmet for that matter. http://www.sportsline.com/nhl/gamecenter/recap/NHL_20081011_CHI@WAS

If Wikipedia is to be believed--and why not--the most goals by one team in a game is 16, by the Montreal Canandiens v. the Quebec Bulldogs on March 3, 1920. That would require hat tricks from AO, Semin, Backstrom, Feds, Green, and a throw in from Brashear. I can see that. WTF?

I was at both Bears games over the weekend. Those of you who were at summer development camp, specifically the final scrimmage, will remember Bouchard's spinorama shootout goal.. Wll, he beat Ramo with it last night in the shootout against the Admirals. It completely sucked the life out of the Scope, but me and my family were going nuts! Being an away team fan is weird.

Posted by: Jordan | October 12, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Jordan: We were at the Bears games too. Loved seeing Bouchard doing the 360 spin goal. Was impressed by what I saw from Varlamov, considering it was his first game. Saw a handful of Bears fans in the stands, but you're right, it feels weird to be so out-numbered.

Agreed, Varlamov looked pretty good on his first pro game in north america, aside from maybe rebound control.

Did you find the Admiral fans to be especially negative? Like instead of cheering FOR Norfolk, they were more cheering AGAINST the Bears? The whole "you suck" chant after a goal for had me scratching my head.

Posted by: Jordan | October 12, 2008 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Jordan:
You said it! "You suck" seemed to be the only cheer they knew. We even saw people with Hershey Sucks t-shirts. There was a very nice older gentleman, longtime season ticket holder, sitting behind me, and we chatted quite a bit, and he was even disgusted by the attitudes of most of the Norfolk fans. Whatever, we had a fun weekend, and I would definitely like to go there again except I think the Bears other visits to Norfolk this year are weekdays.

I think Semin can be an incredible player with as much skill as he has. In the playoffs last year he showed a ton of hustle and he elevated his game. Last season he took shifts off. I hoped that he had broken through the off-shifting, but there it was saturday night. I watched Semin on his shifts -- some he hustled, some he didn't. OV always hustles. If Semin showed as much heart, he'd be nearly as good as OV. That my comment. I'm very glad he is a Cap -- got it?

Danny, did you watch their game against Calgary? They didn't quite look on fire to me. Sure, they were undefeated in the preseason, but the team I saw play wasn't converting on a lot yesterday. Kipper left some juicy rebounds with an open net and they couldn't seem to get it in. It was like missing an open airplane hanger door with a bicycle.
Not saying Theo can play like crap. Anybody plays like crap and we're done. But I don't know if they're worth the anxiety meds.

I could not agree more. But be careful saying things like that on this board - you'll be labeled a Semin hater! ;-) He is one of the most skilled players on the team and at times is mind blowing, but he does not always play with heart and maturity. If he did, he would be unstoppable. Fortunately he has gotten A LOT better about that ... our little boy must be growing up! ;-) Now, I have been flamed for daring to question Semin on this board before, which I don't understand. I have never questioned his skill and ability, just (at times) his passion and maturity. When he's hot, he's hot, and that's usually when he is playing with the same fire and discipline that Ovie does. And that's all I have to say about that. :-)
