Where It All Started

Tonight, Bruce Boudreau and the Caps return to place where their improbable run started.

Boudreau's first game behind the bench was here at Wachovia Center on Nov. 23. No one knew what to expect as the Caps shuffled into the building that Friday afternoon. Not Boudreau. Not the players.

But after rookie Nicklas Backstrom scored one of the season's prettiest goals to beat the Flyers in overtime, 4-3, the course of the Caps' season had been altered. The team was still in last place. The turnaround, however, had begun -- just no one knew it yet.

With Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over the Blue Jackets, the Caps improved to 19-10-4 under Boudreau. They still haven't lost back-to-back games in regulation since the coaching change.

More important, the bizarre victory in Columbus sent the Caps back to Philly in position to vault into first place in the unimpressive Southeast Division -- an almost unimaginable possibility considering where they were 10 weeks ago.

Note: Both the Caps and Flyers, who beat the Thrashers 3-2 in Atlanta last night, bailed on the morning skate (meaning it was completely unnecessary for me to catch that 6 a.m. flight out of Columbus). If there are any changes to the lineup - other than Olie Kolzig starting in net - I'll post a new lineup before the game.

Update:Just talked to Boudreau, who said he wasn't planning any lineup changes. But also wouldn't commit to that, either.

He also said that he used an eraser board message to remind his players that Wachovia Center is where the turnaround started.

"You only get so many opportunities, and this is our first opportunity," Boudreau said. "It won't be our last. I'd much rather have this chance [on] April 7. But you have to start somewhere. They've fought hard in these two months to get into the position they're in. Hopefully they'll get rewarded."

great work Tarik !!!

Completely unnecessary for you perhaps. Not for those of us craving updates to speed along the work week. Carry on good sir. Carry on.

Is Jurcina hurt? He disappeared late last night.

And who starts in net on Friday, dare I ask? Biggest game of the year and there's zero guarantee it's Olie. Which means something, you know.

Great work Tarik. Since you have some time on your hands, have a cheesesteak for me.

Question for you. Is it possible to follow the model of the Skins blog, which forces people to login in order to post comments. With the Caps success lately, the activity in the comments, and unfortunately abuse, has increased. It has gotten more difficult to wade through the garbage and find insightful comments. It wouldn't get rid of all the abuse, but it could help. If anything people would be more accountable for remarks. Thanks.

I hope they can pull it out tonight. Seeing their name on top of the standings would be truely "unbelievable" (Ovechkin's favorite word). It sucks that I'll be in class tonight, but thank god my class is in a computer lab ;)

Friday night's game will have a great atmosphere!

Wow, Tarik - the perfect setup for tonight's game! I am now even more excited for 7pm to roll around (and I didn't think that was possible).

As long as McCreary isn't officiating I think we are in good shape.

Sorry about the 6am flight...I had an early morning myself. Hope you managed to grab a catnap!

Let's Go Caps!!
We're #1!
(OK, I'm an optimist).

We've discussed having people login. But I would hate do that. We're monitoring the situation, though.

As for the cheesesteak lunch, we're discussing the possibilty.

Posted by: Tarik | February 6, 2008 11:57 AM | Report abuse

Tarik, did you actually think the Caps could pull it off and be where they are today when Boudreau stepped in? This has got to be one of the greatest comeback stories, especially it they do end up in the playoffs and how far they go.

Posted by: Ffx, VA | February 6, 2008 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Looking at the Thrash/Flyers game last night, Atlanta only gave up one 5-5 goal. Between us and the Flyers it looks like Atl has really dropped back to a shutdown style.

That being said, penalty's will kill us tonight vs. the Flyers...Staying out of the box is going to be crucial.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 6, 2008 12:02 PM | Report abuse

Maybe I'm just crazy, but was I the only person in the TV audience to notice the (lack of) comment on the Backstrom goal? If you watched the replay, Leclaire moved his feet forward out of the crease one at a time - instead of picking up one foot and then the other so the refs could see where the puck was hiding. It appeared that the puck was under one foot and the forward motion pulled the puck back over the goal line.

This coupled with the McCreary assist, he (invisible) Poti goal makes you wonder a bit about the quality of the officiating.

Just a few more reasons why the Caps should have been the victors last night.
What a thrill to see OV finish the job in OT. Let's hope the guys make it back from Philly with all their teeth intact.

Doesn't Teddy AOL let you fly with the club?

Posted by: dave GC '90 | February 6, 2008 12:23 PM | Report abuse

Hey Dogdaze

I don't disagree with you. But I think they have to SEE the puck over the line to call it a goal. The appearance that it is probably under his leg behind the line is not enough.

In the end it didn't matter. If we had lost that game I think you'd be hearing alot more about that goal (that never was) and that FANTASTIC hipc check that McCreary through on Mo.

Can we sign him as a free-agent defenseman?

For Ovie it started in Columbus, for BB it started in Philly...

HAHAHAHAHAHA....even better.

After the game last night, the Caps should have gone to the officials dressing room and grabbed McCreary. They should have removed all of his pads and then took him onto the ice and tied him to the goal posts like the movie The Mighty Ducks. From there, Ovie and Semin should have been given a bucket of pucks each and unlimited time to rip shots at McCreary!!

Semin probably would've missed the net on his first shot then decide to just stand there, after a few moments of motionless, he'll earn a hooking penalty.

I did not saying he did in intentional - I'm just saying - had LeClair been in net - we wouldn't have won... in that instance - I was fine being a man down...

Not many comments about Semin taking out their D in OT. One of his best plays of the game - definitely gave OV more net to shoot at.

@828 Not so sure if we'd have won or lost on the Leclaire takedown. Given the Mccreary / Morrisonn pick as a giveaway to Nash, I think it ended up a wash. But the Jackets may have lost some emotional steam when Leclaire left the ice which could have shaken their confidence.

Let's hope Philly gives Brash a warm welcome when he drops the gloves tonight.

Olie Kolzig, apparently distraught at the terrible things being said about him by caps fans on the Capital Insider Blog, attempted suicide by jumping in front of a bus in downtown Philadelphia. Thankfully, the bus went through his five hole and Olie is expected to start tonight.

Prediction: Caps 4 Flyers 3.

Posted by: Caps Spokesperson | February 6, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I think Knuble had 2 against us a few weeks ago.

No worries, should be a good game.

Semin got a goal last night - "taste so good once it hits the lips" he said it in Russain last night.

Alex only has 2 goals in the last 2 games... not very good compared to Knuble

Despite what some people think, I've always HOPED Kolzig would snap out of it.

But the more you watch him the more it APPEARS he can barely move side-to-side at all. Teams know this, and they exploit it.

I'll keep hoping tonight.. but let's just say I'm less than confident.

Jeff Schultz has more assists in the last 3 than OVECHKIN. AO - 1A, Schultz - 2A.

Besides Schultz is 6'6" and AO is 6'2".

Posted by: Zchultz | February 6, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

@ Mike - the caps website usually has pretty good recaps of all good plays for a game. You basically watch the best parts of a game in 5 minutes. http://capitals.nhl.tv/team/launch.htm?hlg=20072008,2,805

Do you know that Caps are the second tallest team in NHL? Jeff Schultz is a the biggest contributor to this stat.

And Olie told him "You are the tallest d-man I've ever played with."

He said he played with Esa too, but that's a different story involving blond.

Posted by: Zchultz | February 6, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

Caps will be OK as long as they don't get a 2-man advantage. (Excuse me, ref. Can we take these man advantages one at a time. Thanks, dude.)

Posted by: Klay Key | February 6, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

It can't be Clark's groin at this point.
It's gotta be chronic concussion problems from that traumatic puck to the head.

Either way, the fact is Ovie can have a loose cannon at times and thus we don't want Fehr there when a stray Ovie shot comes through. Ovie will get his SOG's no matter who we put him with. Put Motzko or another Borderline Bear there to grab loose change.

We want Fehr out there with Semin.
(IMO)

I thought it wasn't so much picking on anyone in particular, they're just saying screw worrying about D or goalie considerations (or problems). Let our strategy be to pray/cross fingers that we score at least 6 goals every game because odds are the other team won't score that many.

I hope we score lots of goals every night too. But if the other team scores first we may find scoring more difficult. Yes?

You hit the nail right on the head. If the Caps score 6, the other issues that we have should not matter.

ALSO, all of this started when we were actually scoring 6 or close to 6 on a daily basis. Now, the offense has sorta slowed down. We still want 6 though

@828

So the 6 goal club doesn't come in to play on away games?

Posted by: Lee | February 6, 2008 3:29 PM | Report abuse

Lee,

haha, no, that's when we need it the most. At home games - Caps score 6, everybody is a winner.

This is a really popular subject right now...

AWAY games is when we need it the most. That is what I meant.

Posted by: 828 | February 6, 2008 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Semin probably would've missed the net on his first shot then decide to just stand there, after a few moments of motionless, he'll earn a hooking penalty.

@828

Just killing time before the games starts. Bored at work.

Personally, I don't think I could get bored with the caps scoring 6 a night. So from now on, all of my game predictions will be:

Caps 6
Other team TBD.

Remove the suspense.

Same here Lee,

I wanna get away - away to my house. Who couldn't get bored seeing Alex score multiple goals a night? Def more exciting than the 1-0 loss to Atlanta the other night.

@Lee,

Better at home games because of wings involved, but happy to take 6 on away games because it sure is fun to hear the other teams fans groan with every Caps goal.

Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of Dion Phaneuf to a six-year contract extension.

All are welcome to join the "Bored at work" club. Perhaps we can merge it with the "6 goal Club" and have a wing party. After work of course.

Muir: Burke has certainly struggled like the rest of his club this year. His major off-season signings, Todd Bertuzzi and Mathieu Schneider, haven't met expectations. Both have experienced bursts of success, but neither has consistently filled the hole they were acquired to address. In-season moves to add size (Brian Sutherby) and scoring (Brandon Bochenski) have had little effect.

If anyone wants to have a good idea what Mike Green might be making next year, check out what Dion Phaneauf just signed: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=229011&hubname=nhl

He will average $6.5 million over the next 6 years and his $7.5 million that he makes next year will place him 3rd in the NHL among defensemen, only behind Timmonen and Chara.

If I were Green, my eyes would be lit up right now.

Posted by: Colbert | February 6, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

I don't think Green will be making as much as Phaneuf. Phaneuf is already considered one of the best D-men in the game. Green is looked at as being a guy who could eventually maybe be one of the better offensive D-men in the game. That being said, I don't think 4 mil a year for Green would be out of the question. Green would be wise to sign a 3 year deal, then sign a new one once his value has shot up significantly.

I hate to tell ya but Center Ice has been diluted since the original '94 launch of Sunday Ticket, Center Court, Home Plate, and uh, Center Ice. What makes me happy is to see how well Kozlov is playing he's starting to become a difference maker on offense, and he may be just the linemate that Semin needs in order to get going.

Also, I love the way Fehr plays. He's big, nasty and he wins a lot of loose pucks. We know he has the grit. But how good is his scoring touch? Can he pass? If he's got those skills, then our top two lines may be set for a while.

We still need that killer instinct especially if we want to stay in first. So now we need to:

Friday will be a huge game for first place in the division. If the Caps can play strong like most of the game tonight, they can beat the Canes.
I hope everyone can make it to the game and support the team.

Here is the teams practice agenda for tomorrow and Friday morning. After obtaining a lead, learn to play solid defense and prevent scoring chances.

I tell you what, I'm glad they won the game and moved to first, but they have got to stop putting so much pressure on themselves when they go up by 2 or 3 goals. That kind of play in the playoffs will result in an early exit.

Posted by: Mitch | February 6, 2008 11:54 PM | Report abuse

It's great to be in first. Now it's time to act like a first-place team, put the hammer down and start blowing some of these weak-a** teams away.

No more mister nice guy. A 5-1 beat down of Carolina would look awfully nice on Friday.

As for tonight, I just wish they would have let Ovie fight that guy. The Flyers would be visiting their buddy in the hospital right now.

And Olie played a solid game. He should have stopped the Flyers second goal, but 1 and 3 were slam dunks. As I said after the Montreal win, it would be nice not to worry when you're up two goals with six minutes left. But that's where we are, and this time Olie managed to get it done without giving up the goal at the end of regulation. Hopefully he's turning the corner.

I thought Fehr was trememdous tonight. He's just what we need I think. Pretty soon he'll start getting results with the way he's played.

Olie was very good tonight.

Posted by: Stephen | February 7, 2008 12:17 AM | Report abuse

I am one of the ones who think Olie is at the end of his career, but tonight, in my opinion, he had an excellent game. I have also said that the goaltending should be split more evenly the remaining of the season; I believe, tonight we saw a rested Kolzig and the way he is still capable of performing when he does not have to carry the load. I hope BB keeps rotating the goalies.

I haven't read any complaints about lazy penalties. No high sticking, or holding? oh, wait, yes they were but it wasn't 28.

Last game the Ref cost the Caps a goal, tonight he gave it back, I guess that makes it even.

Brash is a very soft and quiet person off the ice. You don't hear a lot of babbling from him. I wonder how many of it stems from McSorley.

Read earlier one of the Canes' stalwart penalty killers broke his leg yesterday.

We shouldn't gloat, but this is another case where killer instinct should take over, our PP needs to get going.

Laich's goal was definitely stoppable by proper goalie positioning, but we had dozens of spectacular goals that woulda coulda shoulda earlier this season, we're due plenty more.

It seems to me that the goaltender situation is the team's weak link. I don't see the Caps going far in the playoffs because of that. Is there anybody in the system who may be the hope for next year? Are there any good goalies becoming free agents after the season?

The Caps have a real shot at winning the next 7 games:

CAR
NYR
ATL
FLA
TB
NYI
CAR

We need as many wins as possible in that stretch... would be nice to get at least 10 points... after that, its:

NJ
MIN
NJ
TOR
BOS
BUF
BOS
PIT
CGY

Pretty tough grouping - hope we can get another 10 there as well.

I'm gonna preach on the TV situation a bit. I have Cox cable. I feel like over the past year they have done a very admirable job of getting hockey televised as much as possible on their network. They have added VsHD, NHL-HD and have started showing CSN+ on 74 as a spillover when the caps are playing (I did not check Tues night if Wiz were on 74).

What I did not like, and something I immediately contacted Cox about is the Comcast HD situation. We don't have a choice in cable provider. I can't pick Comcast. If I could, I would JUST for Caps in HD. Last night's game was supposed to be on NHL in HD. Unfortunately it was blacked out (didn't know NHL had blackout rules) on NHL and shown on CSN+. To me, this is not equal treatment. Black it out on NHLNetwork's SD channel, not their HD.

As to the game. The washed-out goal was entirely 100% the correct call. You are not allowed to push the goalie into the net as a means of getting the puck in. Olie had all but his feet in the net when the puck crossed. Erskine's hook was borderline and I think the refs were just trying to give one back. Laing's Interference was BS... That's 2 Int. penalties on laing in the past two games...Thing BB's giving them some sort of bonus for whoever crashes the net more?

Opita,

The refs may have handed us that goal, but they gave Philly two with utter b/s calls. The goalie interference call was mystifying (Laing ran into Biron's stick, which was flat on the ice at the time... NOT interference) and the hooking call was nothing more than a stick-lift that never even touched the players body, let alone hooked him. Philly has one of the best power plays in the league and were able to pull Biron for a 6-4 during the hooking penalty towards the end of regulation.

The Caps didn't win because of the officiating last night, they won in spite of it. I thought the Caps played a very disciplined game last night, Semin included. Any night that he doesn't take a hooking/slashing call is encouraging to me. I hope he keeps it up - his discipline and consistency are the only things holding him back from being an elite player.

Great win last night. Let's all cheer for Vancouver tonight (vs ATL) so that we can go into tomorrow still on top of the division! VC's going to be one loud house on Friday.

AO only has 14 goals to go in order to cross the 60 goal plateau, and 27 games in which to do it. He might have a shot at 70 if he keeps his current rate of production up :)

@ FFS Enough

Its even worse up here in Harrisburg, PA. Comcast is it. Then, you get Philly's CSN (and I hate listening to those guys call hockey games) and that's it. They took away the option to purchase FSN Pittsburgh (which was better than Philly) and on Center Ice they block out Philly, Washington, Pittsburgh, and half of the New York games because we're in the "local vicinity" and should pick up the games on local feed. I was so angry I went with DirecTV. Now our default CSN is WAshington, we have CSN +, and the NHL network in our normal programming. I didn't even need to buy center ice!

At first I was feelin bad for Philly fans for the no-goal call but remembered that you are not allowed to push the goalie into the net in an effort to get the puck across the line. That is what happened and thus, no-goal. Not a gift, but the right call.

As far as I am concerned, The refs called a decent one-sided game last night and we still came out on top. I'm convinced the Erskine penalty was complete make-up to the Philly fans just so they could get out of the arena in one piece.

Just found it. Rule 69.6, 2nd paragraph:

"In the event that a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net
together with the puck by an attacking player after making a stop, the
goal will be disallowed. If applicable, appropriate penalties will be
assessed."

Hmm...no interference penalty? Oh, that's right, the guy doesn't wear #53.

Posted by: FFS Enough | February 7, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

The fact that the goalie was pushed into the net is a point of contention. Hartnell's momentum was going to carry him there anyway.

The league hasnt been clear as to whether or not that is reviewable.

The only thing that can be reviewed is if the puck crossed the line before a whistle or before the net comes off the moorings.

Caps got away with one IMO.

I dont think the game was called one sided. Lets face it, Philly was more disciplined.

Posted by: Tommmy | February 7, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Maybe we got away with one last night (tho I don't really believe that -- it should have been an interference penalty...if Laing got one for what he did, there's no way Hartnell driving the net like that ISN'T a penalty), but we got hosed against Columbus. It is what it is...

I think the thing that excites me most about the last 2 games is that they are pretty good examples of what playoff hockey will be like...less-run-and-gun, more defensive and shut down hockey. And the Caps won them both. This team can play wide open hockey (as is shown by leading the league in 4 on 4 goals) and appears to be able to adjust to games that are more defensive.

The major difference about defensive games is the need to work even harder to win the battles and to score those "dirty goals" that BB wants so badly. Lets hope that Fehr, as he gets more comfortable with his linemates and his increased minutes, can start to pot some of the big rebounds.

Go Caps!

Steve R. you are missing Opita's point. He can speak for himself, but the way I read it is not so much that there were lazy penalties, but rather that those same type of penalties are called "lazy" when #28 commits them. I agree with him.
"Lazy penalty" is an oxymoron, maybe they should use better adjectives - some that come to mind are "bad" and "inopportune". To me, with the exception of an imminent danger of giving up a score, all penalties are bad.

Posted by: Steve R | February 7, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

Lazy penalty usually refers to a guy who chooses to take a penalty (usually a hook/trip/interference) as a result of gliding and not skating (i.e. being out of position and taking a penalty as a result), which can happen at the end of a shift if a guy is tired.

Not to put a wet blanket on everyone, but Washington is still 9th overall in the conference. Yes, they lead their division, but overall in the conference they're 9th.

Posted by: FFS Enough | February 7, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

A lazy penalty is holding the stick, hooking, roughing, high sticking. All of it is mental - if you think to yourself that you have to be in control of your body, your stick, and the current situation, you should not get those penalties.

The only penalty that I think is mostly and accident is tripping. Sometimes the stick just gets stuck in there.

I agree in some sort - a bad penalty is a lazy penalty... but bottom line, 90% of all penalties are lazy - in any sport. The only ones that are not - are the intentional ones... intentionally trying to stop a score or intentionally trying to hurt people.

Posted by: 828 | February 7, 2008 11:50 AM | Report abuse

Momentum means nothing when not caused by Defensive player's actions. Hartnell is clearly using his body to move Olie, not using his stick to move the puck.

Posted by: FFS Enough | February 7, 2008 11:50 AM | Report abuse

@11:45 - By virtue of their being in the division lead, the Caps are 3rd in the conference, not 9th. If the seeding were not done that way, then you would be correct that the Caps are in 9th. But under the current rules they are in 3rd.

I think it's clear to most of us that in all likelihood, only one team from our division will make the playoffs -- so maintaining the division lead is the key.

I think what he is trying to say:

It would be a lot better if we were in 1st place in the SE and held the 5 or 6th best record in the Eastern Conf. Because we are in 9th, if we lose the #1 spot, we would not make the playoffs. I would feel more comfortable if we were ahead of Boston, NY, etc... just in case. We still have time - we can get there...

Sorry to break them up but for some reason I can't post big responses. Refs made up calls against the caps. Refused to do so against the Flyers. Laing's Interference should have been matched on the goal-washout (unlike NFL, refs can call a penalty after review of a goal) and Erskine in no way hooked Cry-baby Danni.

Tie Breaking Procedure

If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

@828
A couple of comments on your post: "I agree in some sort - a bad penalty is a lazy penalty... but bottom line, 90% of all penalties are lazy - in any sport. ..." I think we agree, it is just semantics,

" The only ones that are not - are the intentional ones... intentionally trying to stop a score ..." it is just what I said, so we are in agreement.

" ... or intentionally trying to hurt people." I disagree. This is a horrendous penalty and should get the player banned from the game.

There are too many 'judgement' calls when it comes to reviewing.

If he did, in fact, push Kolzig into the net, a penalty should have been called, correct? Penalty calls are not reviewable.

High sticks, kick ins, etc are. If they start reviewing 'intent' where does it stop?

If you look at the replay, hartnell hits the puck, then kolzigs pads. You can make the arguement, that he intended to put the puck in the net before he pushed kolzig.

My point is that the league needs to be more consistent with what it is calling.

Dave Jackson was in NO position to even not call that a goal.

If he would have put his arms up to stop play then went up and reviewed it, it would have been a goal. Instead he waived it off and then it went to review.
With that, Philly needed indisputable factors on their side for the call on the ice to be overturned.

Even after the game, some websites still had hartnell's name on the scoresheet.

Word was too that press was trying to call the war room in toronto to get an explanation, but conveniently, their phone was off the hook

Posted by: Tommmy | February 7, 2008 12:23 PM | Report abuse

I was under the impression that the reason they did not called it a goal was because the ref had lost sight of the puck and blown the whistle, and once he is done that the play is dead and non-reviewable. The puck clearly went in, but the play had been blown dead. Then the question is why did they review it?
It would be nice if a member of the press (hint, hint, tarik) could get us a clarification.

Maybe Erskine can sit the next game out. He's been taking a lot of penalties lately. Though, one last night was a good hooking penalty to prevent a breakaway. I would like to see Eminger get another shot. He played well when Mo was hurt.

The puck was in the net well before the whistle

Posted by: Tommmy | February 7, 2008 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Does it really matter if it was a goal or not? The whislte blew and stopped the play - that has happened to the Caps multiple times.

It's time for Tarik to open another thread methinks.

The whistle blew long after the puck had crossed. If the tables were turned here we'd all be in an uproar.

I just get angry when the league decides outcomes of games with inconsistent rulings on things. It would have been a totally different story if the ref had called a penalty on the play initially. No call was ever made. He was calling for a faceoff and didnt go upstairs until philly contested his call.

Tommy

That is what I think too, but did the ref lose its sight before that and thus had no idea that the puck had gone in? The replay did not have the sound of the whistle so I couldn't tell. It is one of those calls that one will have to accept as part of the game - sometimes on your favor, other times against you.

Posted by: CAPStan | February 7, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Caps,

I had the opportunity to watch the Philly broadcast last night with a friend in Delaware. They had replay after replay after replay of the sound.

The puck was in then the net goes then the whistle.

If he lost sight of it, he should have blown it dead as soon as that happened. not after players are celebrating a goal.

Posted by: Tommmy | February 7, 2008 12:40 PM | Report abuse

But, how many times have you seen a play blown dead and the goal does not count? I agree that it should have been a goal - from where the puck was when the whistle was blown. However, there was a push on Kolzig and the ref blew the whistle. So, you have two things working AGAINST Philly. The play has to be conslusive. I just think it's one of those times in which the ref mess up - they are human too. I am glad it wasn't a goal - that is why I don't care if they cry about it. It has happened to the Caps for 4+ seasons now... here we are, on the other side, and we are still complaining about it.

They will always be inconsistant - based on who the team is - who the player is. Would the refs call a diving penalty on Ovechkin or Semin - even if the plays are exactly alike? Probably not... who will get the most penalties in a game vs Detroit and Columbus... or Montreal and Altanta???? It's just the way it is. The other night after the ref take down. I thought we could have got 2 or 3 penalties against us... but it seemed like they were not going to call anything because they cost us a goal. Does all that make sense?

Posted by: 828 | February 7, 2008 12:42 PM | Report abuse

You're right, it doesnt make sense, but the position the caps are in, a call like that against could be the difference between postseason and golf season

Posted by: Tommmy | February 7, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

What you described is in fact goaltender interference (moving the goalie so he can not cover a loose puck) and is part of the reason I'm so mad about Laing's penalty and the lack of penalty against Hartnell for interference.

There is a clause in the "video review" allowing the refs to use the services to ensure the goal is a "good hockey goal."

They are also supposed to announce to the crowd the reason. If they announced "lost sight and blew whistle" then that's the reason.

Fan590 radio in Toronto had a reporter/friend of Forsberg's on yesterday. He said Forsberg wants to play in a city that he feels he is comfortable in and sign only for this season. He would basically showcase himself to other teams for next year, showing he is in playing shape.

Hey, Foppa, we got Erskine, you two can make a pair.

I know im beating a dead horse and all but Im not so sure the ref went upstairs to see if harnell pushed the goalie, considering there was no penalty call.

I can accept a degree of human error but when you have a playoff atmosphere, its unacceptable

The bottom line is that Hartnell shoved Olie like snow off the driveway, no way it should be allowed.
