Willie Mitchell update

Willie Mitchell returned to Vancouver Tuesday night after "a very good meeting" with members of the Capitals, but a deal with any of the free agent defenseman's suitors isn't imminent, his agent, Mike Liut, said.

Mitchell was impressed with the facilities at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, where he met with Coach Bruce Boudreau, GM George McPhee and team trainers. Now that Mitchell has a better feel for the management and coaching staffs at each of the four organizations -- the others are believed to be San Jose, Los Angeles and Vancouver -- he has visited with, all that's left is to make a decision.

"Nothing is imminent," Liut said in an email, "but we will continue to work towards that end the rest of this week/weekend."

In other news, Caps defenseman Mike Green will participate in the D.C. Public Schools Beautification Day Saturday at Powell Elementary School in Northwest Washington. The Capitals are adopting Powell, a school for preschoolers through fourth grade, for the 2010-11 season.

Not much of an update at all.

With training camp opening in a little over four weeks, we might not find out anything for awhile.

My sense is that Caps and Sharks would be front-runners, given that they're probably closer to a Cup than the other two suitors.

Then again, GMGM will not overpay--in money or contract length--so the Caps may already have been eliminated.

Thanks Katie. We're all going nuts here, anticipating news. I know it sucks that we just don't know anything yet, but thanks for keeping us posted.

I don't think any of us will be satisfied until we can understand what this potential "Belanger delay" deal was. I still think it was a failed Flash-Kaberle deal.

Posted by: EricinReston | August 18, 2010 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Belanger is not official. Still "delayed"

@MFepelst
And your comment didn't do anything to add any substance of the non-update in your eyes. No offense - but at least something was provided after his visit. It may not have been much but good to see at least now he's visited with the teams interested and something could come near the end of the week or early next week.

A journalist goes out of their way to try and keep you as updated as possible - don't knock their effort. Instead of wasting time posting that comment which amounted to nothing - don't say anything at all. I could've cared less to hear that's how you felt.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | August 18, 2010 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Caps have got to go 'all in' at some point to try and win a Cup. It isn't going to happen SOLELY by bringing up prospects from Hershey each season.

This club is lacking the toughness and experience crucial to breaking through in the postseason.

Washington is only going to get that through FA or a trade.

This Capitals team is the most exciting in hockey. It has the most charismatic players. An incredibly young team with even younger players on the way. Calder Cup champs. These team is going to the =best in hockey this year, and dominate for years to come.

You want some of this Mitchell?

Posted by: coastallp74 | August 18, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Any word on Belanger and "the trade"? Is this just because McPhee went to Ocean City with his family?

I have no life. I need hockey news.

Thanks

It would be interesting to know how well the facilities and coaches of the Caps are looked upon by veterans versus San Jose, Los Angeles and Vancouver. I have to imagine Kettler and Coach BB are high positives but wouldn't ultimately determine which team a veteran would select. Regardless, Mitchell has to love the fact the 4 teams interested in him are all true Cup contenders.

I was being sarcastic - I have no idea what McPhee is doing. You're probably right about T.O.

I almost wish it is not Mitchell IF it forces us to go for a trade with the Flames for Regehr. The more I think of it, I like him way more than the oft-injured Mr. Mitchell. I don't think we lose that much in physical play and gain a more complete D-man. Calgary, like Vancouver, needs to shed $2.6MM and Regehr is a cap hit of $4MM. Thats good math for prospects to the Flames although 3 more years of a Regehr contract maybe an issue with raises due to some of our kids in the next couple of years.

We have to wait through another fricking weekend??!! Come on Liut, I loved you growing up bro, get your boy to sign already!!

Posted by: PhilR | August 19, 2010 7:29 AM | Report abuse

Well, the Caps are looking at the right kind of blueliner and they are not jumping the gun by overpaying/back loaded contract ala Rangers and Synder's Skins, so decent. Hopefully, the Caps land Mitchell or another tough blueliner and don't get stuck with a Nylander contract.

Does Mike Liut wear the all-white 70's slasher mask during negotiations?

Posted by: skinsfan87 | August 19, 2010 8:22 AM | Report abuse

Hope he decides today instead of tomorrow. I travel again tomorrow and will have limited chances to check updates.

I also feel that the Belanger deal is still on the hush hush because a deal is still being brokered. Meaning, I doubt it was involving Kaberle, unless it was one of those 3 team deal things and are now having to make new terms with whoever was involved. I still dont think we want/need Kaberle.

I also heard a rumor Halpern was spotted at KCI the other day. Any confirmation on this?

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | August 19, 2010 10:53 AM | Report abuse

I'm pretty sure Halpern trains at KCI during the offseason so even if he was spotted there it really doesn't mean anything. With Belanger coming back there just is no room for Halpern unfortunately....I liked the guy.

Where did you read that Richmondphil? If that be the case I would much rather attempt to put a package together for Regehr as they will most likely earn in the same neighborhood with the same contract length.

Posted by: PhilR | August 19, 2010 12:32 PM | Report abuse

If Mitchell is signed to an incentive ladened 1-year deal there is basically no risk in that except for the guaranteed money, which is not likely to be much.

Re; sgm3

Someone may have responded to this in the previous thread, but I don't think Mitchell can receive any performance bonuses. Well...unless his injury allows it. "Incentives" can only be applied to entry-level contracts, 35+ year olds, and guys coming back from long-term injury.

Was being tossed around when LA offered him a 2-year deal. Apparently Mitchell would prefer a 3-year.

Posted by: richmondphil2 | August 19, 2010 12:37 PM | Report abuse

I'd prefer a trade for Regehr as well.

We should also trade Flash to Dallas for the rights to James Neal, then sign Neal to the same contract Flash got. Okay..now I'm dreaming...

Posted by: richmondphil2 | August 19, 2010 12:40 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil2

Since he missed over 100 days due to injury, you are allowed to sign the player to an incentive based contract. They (sports professionals) talked about all that when Mitchell was originally cleared to play/passed the physical or whatever it was.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | August 19, 2010 12:40 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

He can receive incentive laden deal for 1 year bc he spent 100 days on the IR last season. But like you said he will get a 2-3 year deal. I'd give him a 3 year deal if its for $7.5M(2.5 cap hit). Poti is gone after this year. We need the veteran top 4 presence and at 2.5M/year for 3 years for a top 4 guy you get that deal done whenever you can.

Posted by: ThePat | August 19, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

@Semin and ThePat

Yeah, I must have missed all of that discussion when he was trying to get cleared to play.

@ThePat

I like Mitchell a lot, but 3-years just seems risky. How effective is he going to be in 3 years? He's already over his prime, and with his style of play, all it takes is a freak hit/accident.

Posted by: richmondphil2 | August 19, 2010 12:50 PM | Report abuse

@ThePat

How about we sign him to a 17 yr $10 mil deal (cap hit 588k). And then pay $2mil for years 1-2, $3mil year 3, $1.5 mil year 4, $750k year 5, $350k yr 6, $36k for years 7-17.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | August 19, 2010 12:54 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil2

Put it this way if he gets another concussion he might retire. If he retires, hes younger than 35 so the cap hit doesnt count. To me the risk is a lot less than thought and the reward is worth it.

LOL have you all seen the "awesome" package deals they are offering for the WC? Bus ride to and fro, 2 night stay, 2 tickets, hat, gloves.....only $1600.

If you arent in the mood to spend your entire New Year's in Pittsburgh (cant say anyone would blame you), you can get a package sans the hotel stay for a mere $900.

Apparently its more expensive to bus to Pittsburgh ($300 per person round trip) than fly ($278 per person round trip non-stop).

Oh wait...I forgot to factor in the hat and gloves costs...nm, this is an exceptional deal. :P

The question on the Mitchell deal offered, how long of a "long term" deal are we talking about? 2 years, 3 years or even more. Would prefer a deal that isn't ridiculously long especially for a veteran who is not used to the Caps system.

Interesting...grated it is Florida. Apparently some professional hockey people think the caps and GMGM are pretty good.

"Washington is the cream," Florida GM Dale Tallon told NHL.com. "I think they are the cream of the crop. When I started in Chicago, Detroit was the model. I think now in the East it's (GM) George (McPhee) and what he's done in Washington. We want to emulate what he's done and where they're going."

This statement is not exactly true. I will be at the WC, wearing my warm Caps jersey made of double knit polyester, my blood will be infused with various warming sensation fluids of the Coors Light, Jamesons, Belvedere, and Glenlivet variety, and you always are warm when you crush the Penguins (see DC Blizzard 2010 for an example), I am going to be extremely happy to be present at the WC.

In comparison to the poor poor penguins fan who is there strutting their Crosby jerseys. Lest we forget, an authentic Crosby jersey is made from lace and a thin velvet lining, comes with an attached thong (as opposed to the customary fight strap), and has an unexplainable (by science) attraction to opposing team’s beers. Couple that with the fact that the typical wearer of said drink is usually drinking a Zima, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, or Smirnoff Ice…which do not possess the warming sensation of other alcohols… I’d say your message of feeling sorry should be directed to them instead.

Just my opinion.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | August 19, 2010 4:20 PM | Report abuse

@nimrodrsp

Absolutely, you do not need anything to have an opinion. But you do need some sort of support to have a credible one.

To give a sports example:
I could come on here and state "Duke is going to win the NCAA football championship this year because they are clearly the best college football team in the country."

You could come on here and state "No, I think ... will win or these 60 teams all have a much better chance."

Alone, without any statistical or expert support those arguments are bare. However, if you then support your argument with links to pre-season rankings, records of the teams the previous years, quality of recruits with rankings by recruiting experts(sort of like hockey prospects), articles by experts speaking to which teams are favored, and vegas odds, you are supporting your statement with multiple sources and multiple types of information.

Then your argument has much more substance and is signifcantly more credible than my "Duke will win the NCAA title because they are the best team" argument standing by itself.

Posted by: sgm3 | August 19, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

geez, sgm3. You totally miss the point of an OPINION. Stats are nice but not always necessary for an opinion. I am not questioning anything you say or debating any opinions you have. But, I do not think you have enough stats to say that Duke is the best college football teaam in the country. lol

Posted by: nimrodrsp | August 19, 2010 5:26 PM | Report abuse

@nimrodrsp

Exactly!

I can have the opinion that Duke is the best football team in the country, but it is NOT a credible opinion because there are no stats or evidence to support that opinion.

Hence, you do not need stats and/or evidence to have an opinion, but you need stats and/or evidence to make it a credible one.
