Caps breaking in Winter Classic equipment in practice

By Katie Carrera

At KCI this morning the Capitals will be breaking in their new, retro-look, equipment for the Winter Classic including the red pants, red helmets and new gloves. Both Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth had new masks made for the Winter Classic as well and you can check out a video of the goalies showing off their new looks below.

Reposting on new thread....

I'll be at the Pens game Dec23, the only game I plan going this season. I'm not very familiar with the DC scene... Anyone knows any good pre-post game events around DC?

Man Mike Wise! I didn't think the HBO sries was overly one sided...we are in a skid and they showed it. I mean if over the next however many episodes are left they decide to not show any other side of the team than the dejected winless, no fun, crazy coach side...then yeah I will have a problem. If they don't show the Pens last two losses I will have a problem, but really...nothing was unfair.

I thought it was good TV and it didn't make me think less of the team...disapointed at times sure, but every fan is disapointed with their team at some point every year.

Go Caps! Beat those Bruins!

Posted by: capscoach | December 17, 2010 10:43 AM | Report abuse

I read the Wise article. I'm not buying what he says. He's blaming this rough patch on HBO mostly and Ovechkin some.

Go back and check the record. INcluding the last three games in last year's Playoffs and the first 33 games this year, the caps are 18-18. That's right, the hockey team with perhaps the most raw talent in the world is .500 over its last 36 games. And, you can check this too, the schedule so far this year has been relatively easy. One with Philly and two with Boston. Most of the rest of the games have been vs the so-called average teams. No Wings, Sharks, Canucks, Hawks or Penguins.

18-18 over the last 36. Did HBO clog the slot last April? Did HBO show the rest of the NHL how to beat the Caps? Is it HBO who has failed to adapt, failed to put in the requisite hard work around both creases?

No, the Caps problems have been there since May, 2009 vs the Pens and were masked by last year's regular season run. We've seen other regular season champs in recent years fall back the next year - Sharks and Bruins for example. The reg season is a barometer but not the only one.

Boudreau is still part of the problem whether Wise admits it or not. He either gets blamed for the "system" or he gets the blame because the players aren't listening. Either way, a reasonable argument can be made that a new voice is needed.

Did Katie ever announce that she was ending the video questions before every weekday game...or did I just somehow miss them?

@guer_j

I am going to that game as well...my father's client gave him his season tickets for that one...I am nervous. I am not sure how I might handle being at a game where we lose to that team...I have enougth trouble seeing that from my couch at home.

Anyone see Katie's twitter...Hannan is not out on the ice and DJK is wearing the D's sweater....weird!

Anyone think that is Hannan is scratched tomorrow it is solely due to BBs superstition? do!

@tominsocal

"That's right, the hockey team with perhaps the most raw talent in the world is .500 over its last 36 games."

That comment somes up the team nicely. We have Ovi, Semin, Backstrom, Carlson and Green who are as talented as it gets. The goalies are VERY VERY raw and I think everyone should realize that. And the rest of the F and D, well maybe they just arent as good as we were told they are. The fact is getting younger has not helped this team at all at I think some people in the front office might be starting to realize that and are getting a little panicky. At least that is what I have heard from people that should know things.

Brads gentleman fighting rules:

Bradley went over a few key points of fighting like a gentleman: (1) Let the guy get his gloves off first before throwing a punch; (2) If a guy falls, you just don’t hit him when he’s down; (3) If someone asks you to fight (and vice versa), and you say no, then it’s left at that. Though in the heat of the game, Bradley added, all bets are off.

@ThePat

gotta just mention that while Carlson is VERY talented...he still has a lot of growing to do before he is comparable to any top defensmen in the league. He still acts like a rookie...albeit a rookie with a GREAT future ahead of him.

I didn't compare him to a top Dmen in the league. No argument with the rest of the stuff you said.

Posted by: ThePat | December 17, 2010 11:12 AM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

If you count the three games before you started your count the Caps are 21-14-4 over the past 39 games. Not as bad.

Posted by: sgm3 | December 17, 2010 11:14 AM | Report abuse

I normally think mike wise is a pretty level with his writting but this one is crazy. Has he lost it? While I too would say Ovie has alot to answer for and would be thinking along the line of todays On Frozen Blog, a real good read by the way.

I almost don't want to go on the 23rd but its may caps win or lose

Posted by: bqts | December 17, 2010 11:16 AM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

Going by the way you initially put the records, the Bruins(if you count their last 4 playoff games) are 16-18 in their last 34 games.

Posted by: sgm3 | December 17, 2010 11:16 AM | Report abuse

sgm: Quit being so anal. They are 18-18 since they had a playoff round winning game ahead of them. OT loss is still a loss despite the "gift" point.

And, yes, Boston is struggling too. Their situation being up 3-0 vs Flyers and losing parellels the Caps. You take away what Thomas has done and Boston is really struggling.

BB matching 21-39-10 against the Ducks top line says a lot about the true leaders on this team. 8 is in over his head. in his defense, i think it was a disservice to pick him as captain. take the world off his shoulders and name a new captain. let OV be OV. 21 or 10 or 22 for captain.

Posted by: doughless | December 17, 2010 11:27 AM | Report abuse

"Quit being so anal. They are 18-18 since they had a playoff round winning game ahead of them. OT loss is still a loss despite the "gift" point."

How is being accurate being "anal". You pointed to a stastic how you wanted to display it, I then pointed to a statistic how the NHL displays it.

There is no disputing that their record is 21-14-4 over the past 39 games(counting their last 6 playoff games).

It is what it is. If you are going to count shootout wins as wins then you must consider shootout losses in their right place. If you want to discount all OT regular season games in its entirety then that would be okay also.

There are many ways to display statistics, but don't get upset at me because a statistic accurately displayed does not support your opinion.

OV comments last year about not changing his game has turned out to be prophetic and is the reason why he is having a lackluster season. the players in the league have figured out his schtick, but OV hasn't realized that yet.

@tominsocal1

Did you know that the Pens, before their 12 game winning streak, were 10-13 in their previous 23 games (if you count their last 4 playoff games).

A good place before the game is The Greene Turtle or Bar Louie (this is where I usually go, both are essentially connected to The Verizon Center). Then after, down the street is RFD (crazy amounts of different beer) or Fado, an irish bar. There of course is always your run of the mill chains (Hooters, Ruby Tuesdays, etc.) in walking distance as well. Hope this helps.

My confidence in BB's ability to lead this team was already shaken. I just finished watching the first episode of HBO's 24/7 and all I can say is WOW!

BB looked like a fat, spoiled child getting $1 placed in his piggy bank every time he could work the "F" word into his illogical sentences. What an embarassment! Not just the language, the lack of delivering a comprehensible message. Just ranting...

"F'ing F those F'ing guys F! We can F'ing score F'ing goals! Let's get F'ing out F'ing there and F'ing score F'ing goals for F'ing sake! Stop F'ing mopping the F around and F'ing do F'ing something for F sakes!"

No game plan, no strategy, no real motivation other than screaming and he looked completely lost. Perhaps more fans will see the episode and come to the same conclusion some of us came to a LONG time ago. BB is not capable of coaching at this level.

The episode was well done and did not show favoritism to either team. HBO can't help the fact our coach is a babbling, raving, lunatic and our players are down in the mouth about losing.

@sgm3

You are an idiot. @tominsocal used a record and stats to support his opinion then you add 3 games to support yours. Then you tell him not to get upset after you clearly switched the stats because you weren't happy with the ones he displayed. Seriously, are you crazy buddy? Get over yourself for the 10,000th time.

@doughless

BB already broke up the 21-39-10 line today in practice. Why I don't know. But all this changing lines crap has to stop. BB finally matched lines and we had pretty good success defensively. But nope not happening for 2 games in a row.

capscoach

At least BB didn't scratch King from the practice! I don't think the loses are because Hannan is in, it's because King has been out. Either way it doesn't matter, BB is as clueless as they come.

Posted by: FLDave | December 17, 2010 11:52 AM | Report abuse

@FLDave

lunch break time...
come on...I don't think KING is the key to the caps success! Could he be helpful sure, but to say that had we put King in we would not be in this slump is taking it a bit far. Hendricks, OV, and someone else I can't remember have all fought. And King isn't THAT physical in his play compared to other hard hitters

Posted by: capscoach | December 17, 2010 11:56 AM | Report abuse

@ThePat

I agree that BB changes his lines way too much. I feel he should stick with lines and keep them together even if they have bad games. I'm all for moving Semin up to the 1st line late in the 3rd period if the Caps are down a goal, but keeping consistent lines is important.

I think the LSB line would be much better come playoff time if they played the rest of the season together and were consistently used as a checking line in every game. They would have some bad games, but that is all part of the process. Every line has bad games, even in the playoffs, but a bad game or two is not a good reason to switch lines. If the LSB line was bad for a 10 game stretch or so and showed no signs of being good then you switch

Athough j3rockstar mentioned a couple decent places, he omitted the fact that they tend to be jam packed busy and can be a hassle.

Personally I like to hit up Rocket Bar (granted no food is served here, but you can bring it in) or Jaleo. Jaleo is a bit farther away than the others mentioned (about a block away) but they have some KICK A$$ appetizers and cheap drinks for happy hour.

For post game, all the same places pretty much and yes, they all get kind of crazy busy. If you dont mind spending a few extra bucks and get there soon enough, Rosa Mexicana is amazing and right across the street from the main entrance side/corner.

ThePat: The real question is, why did he break up the lines we had for the tampa game three weeks ago? (The lines where Ovi was on RW.) That was a fantastic game, perfectly executed, and then he changed again.

Win, change the lines. Lose, change the lines.

no clue on that one. Maybe it's all for the cameras and the Caps are tanking on purpose for the story line. They finally bounce back this weekend after a loss to Boston, with an OT win in Ottawa and get a 4-2 win against NJ and then the Pens come to town. Maybe like the NBA, professional hockey is now fixed as well.

Something's coming, I can feel it in my gut and it ain't going to be moralizing (to quote from a SNL skit).

I'm going to the game tomorrow, and I honestly can't get "CapRuins" out of mind..I'm thinking it's a strong omen.

I'm gonna try to find Joe B. and Locker before the game, see if they'll mention "Vermontcaps says hi to everyone on Capitals Insider" on the air.

And saoti, we're following your lead and sitting in the all you can eat section...perhaps I can pick up w/the cheerleader where you left off??

@vermontcaps
That section's concept is just outstanding btw. Granted you have to walk to the particular section portal each time (321 I believe), but its sooooo worth it. You have to show your ticket to the girls there and they give you a bracelet. Then you simply keep coming back until you find it hard to get out of your seat and your blood is pumping like thick gravy through your veins, and THEN you get one more haul to end the night.

Keep a tallying of what you eat, so you can know why to hate yourself in the morning haha.

As for the cheerleader, go for it. Cute brunette, thin, attractive and gets cold standing there (Im sure that narrowed it down). Keep her warm. =)

King is that physical? Do you remember what started his fight against Gillies? He was hitting everything that moved and damn near put one of the Isles players through the boards. Gillies had no choice and challenged King (at the end of his shift) before he put someone through the boards!

Again people basing King's worth on SEVEN games. Are you going to base the Caps season on seven games? Given a chance King will quickly become a fan favorite.
