regarding the question of who you scratch on D for tomorrow.....sloan (for obvious reasons) and Poti (one of the reasons being that the ice sheet won't be that great and not good if he still is nursing a groin injury)

Is that game being televised?

Posted by: CDon | December 30, 2010 11:49 AM | Report abuse

It is great that both Dino Ciccarelli and John "the Druce is Loose" Druce are both playing. Where is Mike Gartner? I thought that Rod Langway was going to be one of the coaches?

I'd love to be at this...even though I have NO faith that Caps roster can win! I'd love to see an average age comparison between these two rosters. Seems to me the Pens are going to be substantially younger.

Regardless, it'll be great to see Dino, Bondra, Pivonka, Beaupre, Laughlin, and May out there. Where's Langway? Stevens? Bobby Gould? We need some guys to lay the smack down on 66 & co. 16 can't do it all by himself!

I like our chances in a benchbrawl in this game....GO CAPS :)

@CDon,

The game is not being televised live but I think that it can be viewed live tomorrow morning on NHL.com

Posted by: MReilly9 | December 30, 2010 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Will this be Mulvey's first game since he was blackballed for refusing to leave the bench to fight?

No Langway or Gartner?

And if there's one Caps that can make Mary-oh! quake it is Bobby Gould.

Olie the Goalie?!?

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | December 30, 2010 12:06 PM | Report abuse

For all the people who love fighting or those people who give Crosby so much credit for pumping up his team for fighting. Has anyone looked at how the Caps have played after the game Ovie fought in?

They are 4-1-2 and have probably played their best overall hockey. They have let up more than 2 goals only ONCE in those 7 games, and that was only a 3 spot to Boston(the 1st period against Boston probably being their only terrible period).

So does Ovie get credit for being a great Captain and setting an example and leading his team? I haven't seen any yet.

Posted by: sgm3 | December 30, 2010 12:07 PM | Report abuse

Really happy to see Bonzai back on good terms with the franchise (I know he has been for awhile now, but still nice to see him coming out to games and participating in alumni events)

@sgm : Agreed about Ovie's fight. Everyone has definitely "grabbed their sacks and competed" much better since then.

Now I really wish I had gotten tickets with Dino playing. Oh well, in Pittsburgh now and the weather isn't bad now. Getting ready for the NCAA/AHL double headder in a few hours.

Guerin is playing in an alumni game? When did he retire...like 2 months ago?

This is an important point. Remember, all - the Pens had an 11 game win streak; the Caps an 8-game losing streak. Both of these are considered anomalous in a season. These will affect the stats you see, and the defensive changes and the attitude changes seem to be making a difference. Right now, we're looking at a small sample size of that, and we can point at the Pens / Caps game recently to get a better look at how the teams stack up.

The shootout is a crapshoot - even Behind the Net says so :) That game ended in a tie, yo, for all intents and purposes, and only after Fleury got lucky in overtime. Forget it.

Does anyone remember that last year we went 4-0-0 against the Pens? That last year, statistically we were the best team in hockey? Look where it got us. (And, does anyone recall that MTL did to Pittsburgh the same thing they did to us? Probably not.)

So would all the Caps fans in the room take off the sackcloth and ashes, please, and stop worrying about the freaking Pens? The Pens fans are right about Caps fans being a whiny and martyred bunch, and I'm honest enough to admit it even as I think they're whiny and self-entitled. It's not the best team in hockey that takes home the Cup, every year, and the Caps are improving with every game they play. That is going to mean more down the stretch than any scoring title or individual streak. [profane] the Pens, and [profane] any Caps fan who insists on obsessing about it.

Frankly, if I'm a Pens fan, last night bugs me a whole bucketload. The Isles shut down Crosby and they shut down the Pens' entire scoring attack. When is it a good thing for your offense that so much of it goes through one guy? I like what the Caps have better - rollung four lines that can all score? Sign me up. When Backstrom catches fire, look out NHL.

Pens are a one trick pony...Malkin makes 7.5 million too much.

Posted by: SA-Town | December 30, 2010 12:46 PM | Report abuse

would have loved to see Dale in the alumni game

Posted by: justbrewit | December 30, 2010 12:52 PM | Report abuse

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that Murphy has chosen to play for the Pens in the alumni game... didn't some of you morons show him enough love with all those whoop, whoops when he wore the red, white and blue??

@vermontcaps
What are those stats for just the last 6 games as those would likely be a better judge of what to expect than the games before it?(there was an adjustment period expected with Hannan coming in)

Posted by: sgm3 | December 30, 2010 11:30 AM | Report abuse

Carlson (6gp) 1g 2a 3pts +7 2hits 12blocks 8shots 5gives 9takes

Alzner (6gp) 1g 1a 2pts +7 12hits 3blocks 4shots 3gives 2takes

Green (6gp) 2g 1a 3pts even 16hits 16blocks 23shots 8gives 6takes

Hannan (6gp) 0g 0a 0pts +1 5hits 9blocks 3shots 3gives 0takes

Erskine (6gp) 0g 1a 1pt even 12hits 13blocks 6shots 6gives 0takes

Poti/Shultz/Sloan (6gp) 0g 1a 1pt -1 2hits 8blocks 5shots 4gives 0takes

When you consider that Alzner/Carlson, Green/Hannan have had the luxury of being paired together every game, and the fact #4 has had 3 partners in those six games, it makes his stats even more impressive. Taking it a little furthur, how's this for thought concerning the last 2+weeks:

Erskine (6gp) 0g 1a 1pt even 12hits 13blocks 6shots 6gives 0takes

Hannan/Poti/Shultz/Sloan (12gp) 0g 1a 1pt even 7hits 17blocks 8shots 7gives 0takes

Throw-in Erskine's toughness, he should be a lock in the 6th spot when all dmen are healthy

I've been a fan since the 70s and I recognize and remember every name on this list (Robert Picard! Pat Ribble!) except J. R. Reich. Who is that and when did he play for the Caps?

Posted by: TheFingerman | December 30, 2010 1:07 PM | Report abuse

This game is only on NHL.com? Not rebroadcast at all on the NHLN? OK, NHL Net has Jr games today, incl US at 4 pm PST (I guess that would be 7 for the rest of you). US Jr also on tomorrow evening. Versus has at 8 pm my time tomorrow "NHL Winter Classic Eve Special." I can imagine they would show highlights.

kittypawz: Some people worry too much. Some worry not enough. I believe that I personally worry just the right amount. I'm sure you feel the same! :)

Ross Greenburg, HBO Pres, on now on NHL Net. The 24/7 show has had 2.8M viewers for the first two which he called phenominal (I think was his word) and he looks forward to doing more of this.

Right now they are having the media skate. Can't believe the alumni game won't be on.

Im still trying to figure out whats the really impressive part of this stat line?
Not saying it's bad.....but I wouldnt go out of my way to call it impressive.

Where is Mike Ridley!!!

Posted by: AreYouKiddingMe1 | December 30, 2010 1:26 PM | Report abuse

No Kelly Miller or Mike Ridley? I guess Dale Hunter's coaching duties preclude him from playing? And what about Mike Gartner and Calle Johansson?

Posted by: EGTuna | December 30, 2010 1:27 PM | Report abuse

J. R. Reich, is joey reich a local goalie who has played on the alumni team for a long time. did he ever play with the caps, no. but he's been around and playing with them for years. he's a good guy and was a good goalie back in the day when I played against him in the Fairfax Ice Arena hockey leagues. i think he may have got some minor hockey in at some point, just don't know when and where.

Posted by: natresgroup | December 30, 2010 1:43 PM | Report abuse

Where is Kolzig?
Why is Reekie not playing?
Tinordi?
Calle Jo?
Miller?
Ridley?
Iafrate?
Maruk?
Hunter?
Nikolishin?

I understand many may have scheduling conflicts, but the above mentioned have all been present in past Caps related alumni events.

the caps could have fielded a stronger lineup than this.

Why isn't Bryan "Bugsy" Watson playing? Not sure who he would play for? Pit 68-74
Was 76-79

No Kelly Miller?

Posted by: cao091402 | December 30, 2010 1:56 PM | Report abuse

How could Kolzig not be involved, has he not been out of the league long enough to qualify! The alumni game will be televised on the NHLN in a month or so. They said the were planning some type of HBO type production for the buildup and game itself.

Kypreos needs to throw down against Tocchet :)

Posted by: alpca3877 | December 30, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

I think if Guerin is playing that the Caps should be allowed to bring back "Circles" Nylander.

Posted by: nomarjax01 | December 30, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

JR Reich - Is Joey Reich? The same guy who played goal for our summer league team in the 80's - I havent seen or heard from him in years - If that is him thats awesome!

Posted by: psugolf | December 30, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

I would literally shed a tear if Scott Stevens threw on the Caps gear one last time.

What would happen if he, Geoff Courtnall, and Neil Sheehy all played, then got together with Dino after the game?

What if Pat Peake were playing and "bumped" into Mario?

What if Joe Juneau were playing and was awarded a penalty shot?

What if they pretended the Caps were up 3-1 in the series?

If Langway were playing, would they make him wear a helmet?

Oh, so many missed opportunities for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Posted by: paperboy76 | December 30, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

there you go, for all those 80's-90's Caps fans yearning for gritty hockey.

Yawn.
Else, I've moved on to the 21st century.

J.R. Reich (a.k.a. Joe) did not actually play for the Caps, but was part of the Capitals farm system in the 80’s. He played for Brophy in Hampton Roads and for MacLean in Baltimore. He’s been the Alumni’s goalie for years when the cameras have not been around and I suspect it was the Alumni’s way of saying thanks especially since he went and didn’t play in the game. He backed up Beaupre just in case, but make no mistake that he’s good enough to have been there and i think would have done great given the chance to play.
