Winter Classic: Capitals beat Penguins, 3-1

By Lindsay Applebaum

(By Toni L. Sandys/The Washington Post)

Eric Fehr scored twice to help the Washington Capitals claim a rain-soaked, 3-1 Winter Classic victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins before 68,111 at Heinz Field.

Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves for the Capitals, who moved to 8-0-2 in their last 10 regular season games against their bitter rival. Check out the final game summary here.

There's much more to come, so stay tuned.

The ice breakers, the goal shakers, The Caps!!!

Just a few thoughts:

- Horrible, horrible officiating in this game. So many missed calls, brutal calls... it was disgraceful. Kind of getting used to it on a nightly basis this season, the officiating in this league is a joke.

- This game itself was a complete snooze fest. Terrible ice conditions which took away all the skill and creativity of the skillful players on both teams. This game was a farce for showcasing everything good about the game.

- Crosby was an embarrassment this game. I guess he's due for a complete sht game this season, and this was it. No excuses, he was flat out brutal and non-existent, floating around and not adapting to the conditions. OVI was much better in this game even though he didn't get on the score sheet (and which he should have) he was much hungrier tonight.

- The Pens were awful this game and fully deserved to lose. This was a brutal game for them, the Caps completely outworked them and won 90% of all the puck battles. The Pens played a really poorly executed game, and the Caps won in every facet it seems. Full credit to the Caps. Embarrassing display by the entire Pens team.

I was really impressed with the Caps overall game tonight, full marks for the win and I think it clearly shows the Caps are out of their slump and are playing a solid team game right now.

Very strong performance by the Caps, pretty much across the boards. The Pens didn't seem to be into it much.

Hey woco, GREAT game for the Caps.

And what a time for a certain player to FINALLY have himself a game.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2011 11:07 PM | Report abuse

Woo Hoo! Much to the disappointment of the NBC announcers, Caps played a great game and won. Great win, boys, outstanding. Loved Varley's jumping at the end of the game.

wtf, I had promised myself a #85 sweater if he's still up at the trade deadline, but I may have to change that to a #16. :)

BigGameSid, thanks for your comments. It can't have been easy for you to say that. What a rivalry this is becoming!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 11:16 PM | Report abuse

carlson 26:28 minutes
alzner 24:25
green 21:15
backs 20:46
everybody else could this be the beginning of carlson/alzner chewing up minutes when the caps have a lead?

kirk, I hope you're right!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 11:21 PM | Report abuse

It's easy to call a spade a spade. The Pens were horrible, could not have played any worse. Every player was mediocre at best.

The game itself was pretty bad too, in my opinion. I think this was probably one of the worse Caps/Pens games I've seen in a long time.

Posted by: BigGameSid | January 1, 2011 11:22 PM | Report abuse

Wasn't a pretty game, but any win against the Pens is a pretty enough for me. I can't stand Milbury and the announcers. I got so tired of listening to that guy's voice. Bring back Joe B and Locker.

POSTGAME WINTER CLASSIC THOUGHTS:
CAPITAL DOMINATION at the winter classic. Plain and simple. They dominated Pittsburgh and didn't allow them ANYTHING. Yea they had a post here or there but for most of the game they shut them down defensively and got physical. Just a solid all-around effort.

ERIC FEHR: Can we arrange for more outdoor games for this guy? Where did that come from?? I've dogged Fehr but tonight all praise. Nice to see Fehrsie get two - NOW MAKE IT CONSISTENT.

FIRST GOAL: Pure true grit by Knuble in front of the net and pushing that puck through. THAT'S HOW YOU GET IT DONE.

As soon as Fehr made it 3-1 - the Caps closed it off defensively. This goes back to that Anaheim game - this team is adapting to the defensively philosophy and buying into it. They are starting to win these tight defensive games and the best part is they are doing it consistently.

Happy New Year to the Caps and a great way to start this year with a big win on the national stage over a much hated rivalry. This was sweet to watch.

Now it's time to get ready for the next four games against our divisional opponents from Florida. It starts Tuesday night and we need to show Tampa just like in the first two meetings whose the better team head to head right now.

IT'S BEEN A WINTER CLASSIC TWO POINT NIGHT.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.

Great win Caps!
It is brutal watching an NBC NHL game. Camera work was awful. Why they think Milbury and that annoying duo of Pang and McGuire are good for their broadcast is beyond me.
Way to go Caps, they played hard and pulled it out. In a weird way it's like the losing streak has bonded these guys together. They look like a team. I'd still would love to see more on the scoresheet from 8, 28, & 19. Throwback uniforms looked great.

i love the fan support at the game and OV mentioning it in his interview. Hearing red and O at the anthem and maybe I am drunk, but I swear I heard horn guy there and a faint chant!

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2011 11:26 PM | Report abuse

Defense ... never thought I'd use that word in a comment about the Caps. But, they played excellent defense tonight. They were careful with the puck, cleared out in front, and kept Pittsburgh's whiney 'lil thang under control. Great win!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that started last Thursday against the Pens when BB had them out against Crosby. Green still ended up having more ice time because of all the PPs.

Tonight they only had two PPs so I think that made a difference as far as their ice time.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 11:48 PM | Report abuse

And what is to be made of the Pens walking off and not shaking hands with the Capitals? Did they leave the Caps standing at center ice?

Great game by the Capitals - perhaps the seeds of playoff success were finally sown in the midst of a meaningless (now meaningful) December losing streak.

TSN said (surprise) that the league needs to look at the Steckel hit on Crosby...we need to see the whole play not just the 2 seconds of contact.

Terrible broadcast team as usual with NBC (also a big surprise)...Doc actually called Fehr "Gustaffson!"

Now to get OV rolling...

.Doc actually called Fehr "Gustaffson!"
-----------------------------------------------------------

well they both wore the same number, Fehr should be flattered.

actually I think he was referring to Johansson, another swede.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 11:54 PM | Report abuse

steckel clearly tried to skate around crosby to be in the play - if anything crosby drifted into his path as the play went the other way

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2011 11:56 PM | Report abuse

Fehr averaged a goal every 4.5 mins of ice time, it is now time to give him some quality ice time with quality line mates. It has to be tough to sit on the bench for such long periods of time and keep your head and body in the game.

Posted by: Freez | January 2, 2011 12:02 AM | Report abuse

Actually Doc may not be popular among hardcore hockey fans for whatever reasons but I've heard Kornheiser say his play-by-play of the Gold Medal game last year was the greatest perfomance he had ever heard in all his years of following sports.

He was so impressed with Doc that he had him on his radio show the following week. And he NEVER has any hockey people on his show.

Posted by: joek443 | January 2, 2011 12:03 AM | Report abuse

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the star of the game yet, Johnny E!! (Hope the guys on the team show some love to him) He set the tone w/his bout, got an assist, and let the Pens know he or the Caps wouldn't tolerate any shananigans at the end of the game. He brought back memories of the greatest defenseman ever, SCOTT STEVENS, jostling for position with Brad Marsh decades ago. That's the attitude we need!

I had a feeling Laich was going to have a big game, and turned out it was to be Fehr....great game #16, and you played the least of any Cap at that.

Carlzner continued their strong play, Varly was outstanding, and Steckel continued his good play of late, too.

A huge win, and seeing Ovi start celebrating w/8seconds left...well, who could blame him? GO CAPS!

what to make of it? I'm not shocked at all. Not the first time crosby walked off the ice without shaking hands. The nhl's golden boy is showing to be nothing more than a poor sport.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I think it is. They are already the Caps go to defensive pair. I think BB is comfortable putting out either of the other two pairs as well, which is good because the Caps no longer have a weak D-pairing.

Alzner and Carlson have been awesome and continue to get better. Barring injury, I expect them to be even better come April. In addition, they showed they can step up and play in big game situations(this game, Carlson last year in the playoffs and Alzner in game 7, Carlson and Alzner in their WJCs)

That's a good point, and remember Bradley is coming back too.

With the way Beagle has been playing, I don't think you can take him off the 4th line. He has been an awesome 4th line player the past week and contributes greatly on the PK too. Beagle has good size, decent speed, okay stick skills, forechecks great, plays well on the walls, and plays very solid defense. IMO, he has been awesome the past week or 10 days or so.

Posted by: sgm3 | January 2, 2011 12:26 AM | Report abuse

@joek

one game in particular comes to mind...playing in Philly, they were lined-up on the faceoff (can't remember if it was offensive or defensive).....Stevens saw a lot of power-play time a couple of years, it could've been on a pp....but if I recall correctly, Stevens switched spots w/whomever was lined-up w/Marsh because Marsh was giving him the business (might've been Gartner)....Stevens gave it right back, and they fought shortly thereafter. That was Caps/Flyers hockey!

Posted by: vermontcaps | January 2, 2011 12:28 AM | Report abuse

I want Beagle, Hendricks and Bradley when he comes back playing on the same line together... that would be an awesome energy line.

Posted by: joek443 | January 2, 2011 12:32 AM | Report abuse

Not sure how to describe it, but the PNC Park side of the stadium seemed to have more Caps fans than the Carnegie Science Center side. Our section, 510, was at leat half Caps fans.

When the Pens fans started streaming out of the stadium, the. Other side of the field seemed more empty.

Fun game to watch even from the rafters with binocs. Can't wait to get home and watch it on TiVo. The weather and ice sucked, but I'm glad it went off without too much of a hitch.

I loved the energy the Caps had ithe second and third.

Schultz just came off IR, so it's not too surprising that Carlzner got the time when it came to defensive shutdown with 2-1 and 3-1 leads. Ya know they can actually play D. Green will be fine...this will allow him to go deep with even more frequency. The fact that they can take over a game defensively late bodes well.

Props to Pittsburgh. We may hate the Pens, but the town is nice and the people are friendly and respectful (and super supportive of their teams). I'm from Cali and if this was a Dodgers/Giants affair there would have been violence pre, during, and post game. In hockey it mostly stays on the ice.

Posted by: SuperG5 | January 2, 2011 12:36 AM | Report abuse

Big win for the CAPS! The NBC coverage is down right awful. Could they have possibly found any worse camera angles?

Crosby is just proving what a cry baby he is by not shaking hands. Way to promote the game Sid...show a little class.

Varly is our no.1 goalie, end of story.

@VermontCaps Stevens was my favorite player and was a true leader. I couldn't have been more disappointed when they traded him and then had to watch him win cups in NJD uni.

@chase4
@wocoliz

Syd did the same thing to the Wings when the Pens won the cUp. No hand shake ? Weird?

@wocoliz
It's not a rivalry until we start beating the Pens when it matters. The Pens fans still consider us a joke. We've been up 3-1 on them TWICE in the playoffs only to lose. We need to play with this type of intensity for 6 or 7 games, and send them packing this spring. That is not going to be easy to do. THEN, we need to win another 12 play off games by arriving at the rink with the same intensity.

We may need to play almost 30 post season games with that type of intensity, and skate around with that ugly cUp before the Pens fans really consider us rivals. Beating these boys in the post season is going to take a Herculean effort night after night. Our team has problems even playing hard for 60 minutes. I'll try to enjoy the moment though.

But, we need to this same effort for an entire month after the season ends. I hope we turned the corner for a number of players (Fehr in particular). Two years ago we had this group down 2-0, they fought like dogs to get back in to the series. They then showed up in our town and ripped our guts out AGAIN. (A major ass kicking in our own building.) We needed to win one game in Pittsburgh and then come back here a lay down a butt kicking. We didn't, and we've struggled ever since. We could have won the cUp that year !!!!!!!!!!!!

We've seen what this Caps team is capable of talent-wise. They can play with heart for A GAME. Play with heart in the playoffs for a month, and then I'll start cheering.

I want to cheer this victory, but I still get this feeling that Syd, Talbot, and the Pens know how to win the cUp. We do not. It's one game. Winning the cUp is a marathon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check it out. Se division the strongest in the eastern conference.

@Vermont.
Erskine was grade a tonight.

Even crosby's handshake b4 the game was insincere. I don't mind Carlzner being the top pair. Takes some pressure off green.

BHB. That is a great energy line. Beagle deserves a hard look. Guy plays with intensity every night.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | January 2, 2011 1:04 AM | Report abuse

I admire the way Crosby plays in the playoffs. But, he really is looking like a jerk. Dissension on the Pens is great for the Caps, as they're a brick wall on the road to Stanley.

No elite goal tender in Philly (yet) is also great news. Although why do I get this sick feeling, that Vokoun will end up between the pipes there just as we FINALLY get serious about a cUp?

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | January 2, 2011 1:12 AM | Report abuse

He was THE MAN, and I'm still suffering from the ptsd that came with his departure. However, the team inexplicably let him walk by refusing to match St. Louis' offersheet, which kind of made it even worse.

I think we could see his star shine again in the coaching ranks, and the Caps organization should make every attampt to restore some goodwill between the two.

Pretty boring game but when the ice is covered in water, not much you can do about that. Both with the Penguins have had really poor conditions for hockey. Last one they played had too much snow on the ice for the puck to sit, this one had too much water. I think washington played a smart game that suited the conditions and didn't make many mistakes.

Posted by: Stu_c | January 2, 2011 9:56 AM | Report abuse

@sabredc

Yea, we can all get giddy for one game. The Caps finally played "their salaries". But can they play that way for the 20 plus games it requires to win the prize ? Woopdy do, we beat Crosby once.

These guys are gonna' be tough to beat in the playoffs. They're seasoned and nasty. The same can be said for the Flyers. The old time fans have been through the playoff wars enough times to know this win means nothin'. If anything it means both the Flyers and Pens will be more "geared up' to take on the "Choketals" in the playoffs.

Back to the same old question. Does BB have the personality, intelligence and will power to force these guys through another 25 performances like this one. I say, " I doubt it !!"

I'm a Caps fan, so I hope and pray that he does. But the hockey fan in me knows that we don't have the GUTS to play like that for a month while injured.

I've turned to the dark side. The Lafontaine rink piece was horribly timed as you could hear the old Isles announcer gushing over the 4th overtime win in the background. Sad Easter for us. SabreDC, I doubt you were around for that, or you wouldn't be so "mouthy".

Wake up !! All we've done is awakened sleeping dragons that know how to play play off hockey.

Capitals-Penguins is inarguably the greatest NHL rivalry today!

Every game is a battle!

NHL have Division Championship, Conference Championship, Stanley Cup Championship and since 2005-2006 season the CAPS-PENS Championship!

The yesterday's game was a further proof!

Watch out for that:

10/16/2008 Capitals 4 @ 3 Penguins
01/14/2009 Capitals 6 @ 3 Penguins
02/22/2009 Penguins 2 @ 5 Capitals
03/08/2009 Penguins 4 SO @ 3 Capitals
01/21/2010 Capitals 6 @ 3 Penguins
02/07/2010 Penguins 4 @ 5 OT Capitals
03/24/2010 Penguins 3 @ 4 SO Capitals
04/06/2010 Capitals 6 @ 3 Penguins
12/23/2010 Penguins 3 SO @ 2 Capitals
01/01/2011 Capitals 3 @ 1 Penguins [NHL Winter Classic]

Final Result in the last 10 regular season games:

Remarkable Record for Washington Capitals 8-0-2 against Pittsburg Penguins!

8 wins and just 2 shootout losses!

Astounding!

Breathtaking!

See You Later!
