GO CAPS!!! Let's do it right tonight, the eyes of the world are upon you...kick some Pens a@@!!!!

Posted by: vermontcaps | January 1, 2011 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you, vermontcaps.

Kudos to the NHL network for all the pregame coverage yesterday and today--it has been terrific to see Olie--but I'm SO ready for this game to start.

C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

I like the cleaner look on the shoulder area instead of having the big weagles there.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 1, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

I'm so glad the game is on WFED too so I can listen to Kolbe and Sabourin instead of the NBC folks.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Why is the guy in the Santa suit singing O Canada? I didn't think a Canadian team is playing.

Posted by: zmega | January 1, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

DROP THE PUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2011 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Go CAPS!

Posted by: nicety251 | January 1, 2011 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Lot of red in Pittsburgh, and the "Ooooo" was nice and loud during the anthem

Posted by: alex35332 | January 1, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

so far the camera work totally sucks - where's the puck?

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Good 'ol Ovi, already breaking things. LOL

Posted by: nicety251 | January 1, 2011 8:16 PM | Report abuse

@ebolean1

Agree....the camera work is like a high school football game!

Posted by: dezlboy1 | January 1, 2011 8:16 PM | Report abuse

OK, guys, we desperately need results from this PP...

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

iwonder if the ref from pit made that call

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

NBC...what a way NOT to gain scores of new NHL fans. Camera long shot view of the players so no one can see the puck.

Posted by: dezlboy1 | January 1, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

What's with the $*#*^$ blimp shots during play?!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Love the blimp shot.

Posted by: zimbar | January 1, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

i mean - i have plastic sunglasses that block out the glare - it is hard to believe they don't make camera lenses that do that - nice job nbc, i can't imagine attracting any new fans to hockey with this sorry production

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

The point of a game outside is to show sweeping shots... Like it or not thats how TV people think.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 1, 2011 8:25 PM | Report abuse

i mean - i have plastic sunglasses that block out the glare - it is hard to believe they don't make camera lenses that do that - nice job nbc, i can't imagine attracting any new fans to hockey with this sorry production

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:25 PM | Report abuse

dezlboy1, they must be using the football camera crew they normally use instead of people who actually know how to shoot hockey games.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 8:26 PM | Report abuse

oops - sorry for the double post. somebody needs to take out the blimp cam!

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:27 PM | Report abuse

did u see that p#ssy penguin - say "I'm done I'm done" while he was still standing up who was that? every cap should fight him for practice

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

ebolean1 - yep, good point. Just think so many viewers have concluded "I can't even see the puck. Who wastes their time watching hockey." Heck, I watch hockey all the time, and I can't see the puck (sort of).

Posted by: dezlboy1 | January 1, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Good showing Johnny E!!! Looked like Rupp asked for it to end maybe?? Keep it up, looking good.....GO CAPS

Posted by: vermontcaps | January 1, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

My two cents:

NBC is doing a terrible job with this game. The commentary has been really bad especially when there are prolonged periods of silence. I could also do without the constant commentary about the condition of the ice.

Give me Joe and Locker.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | January 1, 2011 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Stop with the aerial shots!!!!!!!

Btw, our PP looks even worse from a blimp than it does from the ground

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 1, 2011 8:52 PM | Report abuse

the camera angles are miserable. That stupid areial shot makes my head hurt.

Posted by: vm114 | January 1, 2011 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks will be the next to fight.

Posted by: nicety251 | January 1, 2011 8:53 PM | Report abuse

LOL gee this is a football stadium after all, some of you people are asking a little too much.

But then again you wouldn't be a Caps fan if you didn't whine about something.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Also this game isn't really geared for the hardcore hockey fans, it's for CASUAL sports fans who want something else to watch besides all the bowl games on New Year's Day.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 8:59 PM | Report abuse

is there anyone broadcasting tonight that hasn't coached the Pens?/

Camera work is awful

Posted by: jono57 | January 1, 2011 8:59 PM | Report abuse

If they did aerial shots during live play in a football game they would have their switchboards blown up from angry callers. Why do they subject hockey fans to it?

Posted by: amorris525 | January 1, 2011 9:01 PM | Report abuse

i'll tell ya what joke - if i was the nhl and i was going to showcase the game of hockey and i knew months in advance where it was going to be played, i would make sure that the folks responsible for putting it on tv were prepared for the fact that it's in a football stadium and had camera's in place where they could show the game in a way that would attract new fans as well as provide already fans what they are used to. even if it meant building elevated platforms around the rink that allowed for shots big enough to be able to see the puck. what about some cameras on the other side of the rink? cameras on one side work fine in the usual arena - but as you pointed out this isn't the usual arena. somebody didn't bother to think carefully about the logistics of putting this on tv - and this isn't the first winter classic on tv - sheesh!

and while I'm at it, I can't stand whoever is on the microphones - none of em

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Milbury still sucks. He's such a tool.

Posted by: jjhare | January 1, 2011 9:06 PM | Report abuse

hey noob,

this is BUSINESS. you think the NHL have that kinda leverage to tell NBC what to do??

LMAO what planet are you from????

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

The fight between Erskine and the Penguins dude was totally staged. Did you see them say to each other and the ref that they were done fighting?!!

Posted by: Thundershock | January 1, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: amorris525 | January 1, 2011 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Just advocating the perspective of someone with a video background.

A lot of money goes into the blimp shots and the areal shots. They HAVE to use what they pay for, or someone probably gets fired. There is probably a contract with Goodyear about that, stating how many times they have to use that camera angle.

Football has the benefit of a lot of down time for extra camera work.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 1, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

@vermont- No maybe about it, Rupp called for a cease fire, weak.

Yes NBC's coverage sucks just like it always does, no one should be surprised by this. I'm not worried about this deterring new fans, I could care less about the league gaining any new fans. The league is popular enough now that I get to watch every Caps gm as well as a lot of other teams gms. Unless you are an owner of a team or work for the NHL, why would you care if we get any more fans? I'm not saying new fans aren't welcome to our wonderful sport but if it takes dumbing it down as NBC has perfected, I'd rather our fanbase remain constant.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | January 1, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Right now I don't care if they film it from West Virginia, I just want the Caps to score some damn goals and win this thing!

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 1, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

LOL gee this is a football stadium after all, some of you people are asking a little too much.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Are you serious joke??? You whine about the Caps constantly. Why am I surprised you are oblivious to the fact that you whine?

This crew has a giant woody for canadians. Why anyone should care what Milbury thinks is beyond me. Most claim the Islanders are STILL trying to recover from his stint as their GM.

Posted by: fanohock1 | January 1, 2011 9:08 PM | Report abuse

I do not recall the camera work at the other Winter Classics as being this bad. The players look like ants half the time and I have no clue who is on the ice most of the time as I can't read the numbers and announcers are chatting about something else or only identifying the Penguins. If the league is trying to convert the casual fan, this broadcast is a failure.

Posted by: NovaCath | January 1, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

This is the FINAL year of that dreadful national TV deal they had to sign after the lockout.

Bettman would get down on his knees and do whatever the executives at NBC, ESPN or whoever want him to do to get a lot better deal.

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 9:11 PM | Report abuse

nbc announcers (e.g. doc) don't seem to know all of the caps' names, but announce the names of the pens in similar situations.

yeah, looked like Rupp asked for it to end. i've never seen that happen standing up and in open ice like that before

Posted by: Joe901 | January 1, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Rain. God hates Pittsburgh

Posted by: alex35332 | January 1, 2011 9:13 PM | Report abuse

I whine about stuff that actually matters, NOT something like the TV coverage... LOL

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 9:14 PM | Report abuse

The first forward I would pick to build a team is Datsyuk over Crosby, Ovechkin or any other forward.

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 1, 2011 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Can Ovi ever score on a breakaway against the Pens??

WTF?!?!?

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 9:17 PM | Report abuse

I like how NBC demonstrated how hand warmers worked.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | January 1, 2011 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Hope this isn't a repeat of 2009 Game 7. I know that was in the first period, but an Ovechkin missed breakaway and then they fell apart. Let's hope it doesn't happen again.

Posted by: amorris525 | January 1, 2011 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Hate being a homer but what a surprise ..... Caps screwed on a call

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

so who was slow on the line change that led malkin's goal?

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Need to score on this PP!

Posted by: nomarjax01 | January 1, 2011 9:26 PM | Report abuse

I have more confidence in the PK than the PP. Sad.

Posted by: nicety251 | January 1, 2011 9:26 PM | Report abuse

I am in shock that goal wasn't waived of for some random reason.

Posted by: amorris525 | January 1, 2011 9:28 PM | Report abuse

way to keep going after the puck!!!

Yes Knuble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 1, 2011 9:30 PM | Report abuse

That's the second time Semin has hit Letang this season. Cool.

Nice score on the PP with new bodies (MP85 for one). Still not as confident.

Posted by: nicety251 | January 1, 2011 9:32 PM | Report abuse

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing wrong with that, PK is much more important than PP come playoff time.

Thank goodness for replays

Where's Tom Shales when you need him? :-)

Posted by: dezlboy1 | January 1, 2011 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Who make the pass to Fehr and got it out of Fleury's skates?

Posted by: dezlboy1 | January 1, 2011 9:49 PM | Report abuse

lololol suck it crosby, nice work steckel.

johansson went hard to the board and controled that pass - just before he hit the boards - all made possible by MaJo

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2011 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I think a couple of you owe that ref from pittsburgh an apology...

Posted by: joek443 | January 1, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

The ice must be mush. The announcers doth protest too much. The skating has looked like it's in slow motion from the start and getting worse.

Posted by: zmega | January 1, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

me too - i had to back up the recording and watch it 4 or 5 more times!

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

I would like to see a replay of that slashing they were talking about.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 1, 2011 10:00 PM | Report abuse

The boys are playing inspired and taking it to them. But all it takes is one lil' mistake. Let's keep at it.

Posted by: visionof75 | January 1, 2011 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Caps can't have a letdown. It also seems to happen after a particularly lively period.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | January 1, 2011 10:13 PM | Report abuse

I'm getting more and more nervous as the ice condition gets worse. Come on, Caps--let's get another one and put this thing away!

10 minutes left. Fingers crossed.

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 10:41 PM | Report abuse

B to the frickin' S.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | January 1, 2011 10:45 PM | Report abuse

I wish I could say I'm surprised about that BS washout...but I've seen too many Caps/Pens games for that.

LET'S GO, CAPS!!!!

CAPS WIN!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | January 1, 2011 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Now that's how to play with a lead. Maybe the Caps are learning.

Posted by: zmega | January 1, 2011 10:51 PM | Report abuse

I LOVE if

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 1, 2011 10:52 PM | Report abuse

When did they call up #16?

hehehe

....go caps!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2011 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Gee...who or what are the Pens gonna blame for this? They sure won't give the Caps credit for superior play in less-than-ideal conditions.

That said, I can't wait to see Wednesday's episode of 24/7.

What a way to start the New Year!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 1, 2011 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Nice job Caps.

Posted by: Justafan | January 1, 2011 10:54 PM | Report abuse

What was impressive with tonights game is how the Caps focused on defense once they took the lead. Big difference from last year. That's gonna make a difference in the playoffs.

Posted by: great81 | January 1, 2011 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Anyone see anything wromg with the Caps tonight (except for top line not scoring)? Yeah, solid two points. Let's go Hearshey Capitals!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 1, 2011 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Nice ass whopping Caps. Where are all the big mouth Pissburgh fans????? Nowhere to be found. I see Sidney the Crybaby still wears lipstick. Point streak comes to an end. He did not deserve it anyway.

Posted by: BaysoxFan39 | January 1, 2011 11:00 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, I should have said Ovi not scoring.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 1, 2011 11:03 PM | Report abuse

@ wocoliz -- me too. great drama. HBO has done a good job staying fairly neutral and drawing attention to the both the personalities and the ups-and-downs of the sport. Still ... hard to bury the "come from behind" storyline.

Posted by: reddog278 | January 1, 2011 11:05 PM | Report abuse

EAT IT PITTSBURGH!! GOOD JOB CAPS!! Seemed like the NBC commentators were a little "slanted" towards the Pens. It was good to shut them up too!!

Posted by: DCMixmstr | January 1, 2011 11:06 PM | Report abuse

hahahahahahahahaha, wonder if Milbury's date with Sid is still on?

Posted by: unclebully4 | January 1, 2011 11:07 PM | Report abuse

No question Doc did not study his Capitals roster card (and he decidedly knew the Pens roster without fail)...did you hear him call Fehr "Gustaffson" on the defensive end - just before he scored. At least he got that call right.

Posted by: bill_in_damascus | January 1, 2011 11:43 PM | Report abuse

What a great win. 5-0-1 since the big slide. They really seemed to control the puck more than Pitt. Sid was a non-factor although I think we were lucky he didn't get a penalty shot on his breakaway. Milbury needs to go. Is there some way to start an online petition to get rid of him.

Nice to see Perrault's nose looks so nice after being broken.

Yes, a very convincing win.
