Alert: Snow Flurries and Squalls Moving Through
A line of flurries and briefly intense snow squalls is now progressing into the western suburbs of DC. While short-lived, this line may produce a quick dusting to 1/2" of snow on grassy areas affected by the strongest activity. Temperatures in the metro region are generally above freezing, so roads should remain mostly wet as opposed to white. See the Snow Lover's Crystal Ball for the latest on Thursday's snow potential, and Matt's post for the forecast through the weekend.

snowed like crazy for about 25 minutes out near The Plains. Just seemed to blow up out of nowhere. Just lazy flakes now, sun is peeking out. Temp dropped 5 degrees in about 10 minutes though. At least 1/2 inch of accumulation!

I am on the Herndon/Reston line and we are getting mad snow falling along with lots of wind. Too bad none of it is sticking. :0

Enjoy it Ian. While up to the north in SE PA we are mostly cloudy. NOT A FLAKE. But it must be nice to see a 1/2 inch none the less.

I received about .25 inch of snow around 10:15 in a brief but intense squall. The highway turned white for a while. Currently 29 degrees and P.C. with nw winds 10-15. Will give my thoughts on the latest model runs for Thursday on the previous post soon.

Nice burst of snow in Chantilly, turning grassy areas white, even a couple of white patches on side streets.

Okay, Cap Wx gang, that is cool. An blog update alerting us snow flurries en route with looped radar right there - very nice, I like!

Got flurries in Alexandria - very very small flurries, but a decent number of them.

Just flurries now, but as for me, I'm stocking up on bread, milk, and toilet paper in a little bit. Worried about road conditions too, this one might be a real bruiser! haha

Snow is blowing sideways here in Reston.
If this is a flurry, I'd hate to see real snow. LOL.
It is starting to stick to the mulched areas around the base of the trees here in RTC.

Thanks Nader ... hopefully this kind of post shows the potential the new site has. We know we have some work to do, but eventually we are confident we'll provide everything we did before and much more.

And just like magic the sun is out again and all the snow stops. A very tiny dusting here in Herndon. Let's hope we do better than this soon. There is really something magically about watching the snow fall and everything turning white. I love when we get a lot of snow and no one is out, not even a car on the road -- the stillness and the snow is so peaceful.

Pretty good snow squall in Calverton right now, it's snowing sideways. It's accumlating on the grass but the roads are still clear.
My inner 12 year old is thrilled.

Looks like the heaviest moved south of the city as suspected earlier. A bit of a 'DC split' on radar with some heavier stuff just north. We had about 5 minutes of decent light snow in Dupont Circle. Flurries now.

Almost an inch of snow near the Prince William/Fauquier County line in Western Prince William County in Broad Run. Our grass and driveway are all completely covered with the white stuff. VA 55 actually has portions covered with snow as well.

What about the chance of snow for next week...maybe Wednesday or Thursday????
Posted by: Anonymous | January 15, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse
To the previous commenter ... you are correct there could be something on the horizon long about Thursday next week. But that is an eternity in the land of weather models. Let's get through the potential storm for *this* Thursday first :)

Re: Weekend temps
Models continue trending warmer for this weekend. It will still be cold, but maybe not as cold as forecasted earlier.
And, we are now halfway through "meteorlogical" winter! (Dec-Feb)

OMG! the snow was so pretty! I was in DC around 11:45 am and the snow was coming down. But I heard that areas north and west of us got more snow. I think frostburg, maryland yesterday got about 3 inches. I hope we get a huge snowstorm this year....

Missed the snow earlier today due to a room with no windows... let's hope that's not the last of the season!!! Apparently a heavy squall came through around 11:20 (Leesburg) but lasted for no more than 10 mins.
