Alert: Snow Flurries and Squalls Moving Through

By Ian Livingston
Latest D.C metro area radar loop, courtesy AccuWeather. Reload to update, or click here to expand.

A line of flurries and briefly intense snow squalls is now progressing into the western suburbs of DC. While short-lived, this line may produce a quick dusting to 1/2" of snow on grassy areas affected by the strongest activity. Temperatures in the metro region are generally above freezing, so roads should remain mostly wet as opposed to white. See the Snow Lover's Crystal Ball for the latest on Thursday's snow potential, and Matt's post for the forecast through the weekend.

beautiful, blowy snow in Bristow

Posted by: missy | January 15, 2008 11:35 AM | Report abuse

snowed like crazy for about 25 minutes out near The Plains. Just seemed to blow up out of nowhere. Just lazy flakes now, sun is peeking out. Temp dropped 5 degrees in about 10 minutes though. At least 1/2 inch of accumulation!

I am on the Herndon/Reston line and we are getting mad snow falling along with lots of wind. Too bad none of it is sticking. :0

Posted by: Jenn in Reston | January 15, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

A few flurries in Dupont Circle right now -- very few.

Enjoy it Ian. While up to the north in SE PA we are mostly cloudy. NOT A FLAKE. But it must be nice to see a 1/2 inch none the less.

Temperature dropped from 35 down to 28 at Dulles with the snow showers moving through.

I received about .25 inch of snow around 10:15 in a brief but intense squall. The highway turned white for a while. Currently 29 degrees and P.C. with nw winds 10-15. Will give my thoughts on the latest model runs for Thursday on the previous post soon.

Nice burst of snow in Chantilly, turning grassy areas white, even a couple of white patches on side streets.

Okay, Cap Wx gang, that is cool. An blog update alerting us snow flurries en route with looped radar right there - very nice, I like!

Posted by: Nader | January 15, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Got flurries in Alexandria - very very small flurries, but a decent number of them.

Posted by: PTO Dave | January 15, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

Just flurries now, but as for me, I'm stocking up on bread, milk, and toilet paper in a little bit. Worried about road conditions too, this one might be a real bruiser! haha

Snow is blowing sideways here in Reston.

If this is a flurry, I'd hate to see real snow. LOL.

It is starting to stick to the mulched areas around the base of the trees here in RTC.

Thanks Nader ... hopefully this kind of post shows the potential the new site has. We know we have some work to do, but eventually we are confident we'll provide everything we did before and much more.

Snowling lightly over here in the capitol hill area. Keep up the great work guys!

And just like magic the sun is out again and all the snow stops. A very tiny dusting here in Herndon. Let's hope we do better than this soon. There is really something magically about watching the snow fall and everything turning white. I love when we get a lot of snow and no one is out, not even a car on the road -- the stillness and the snow is so peaceful.

Snowing sideways w/lots of wind in Fairview Park/Falls Church now... can barely see across the lake. Intense!

and the snow has stopped...

Pretty good snow squall in Calverton right now, it's snowing sideways. It's accumlating on the grass but the roads are still clear.

My inner 12 year old is thrilled.

Heavy squall in Gaithersburg w/ sun shining through clouds!

Posted by: mark | January 15, 2008 12:15 PM | Report abuse

20-minute squall in germantown. Briefly dusted the roadways.

Posted by: rob | January 15, 2008 12:21 PM | Report abuse

Looks like the heaviest moved south of the city as suspected earlier. A bit of a 'DC split' on radar with some heavier stuff just north. We had about 5 minutes of decent light snow in Dupont Circle. Flurries now.

Posted by: Ian, Capital Weather Gang | January 15, 2008 12:21 PM | Report abuse

Seems to be colder than forecasted.

Posted by: TJ | January 15, 2008 12:24 PM | Report abuse

snowin' in Silver Spring now. wait...its stopping and the sun is peeking out.

Posted by: jbird | January 15, 2008 12:30 PM | Report abuse

Almost an inch of snow near the Prince William/Fauquier County line in Western Prince William County in Broad Run. Our grass and driveway are all completely covered with the white stuff. VA 55 actually has portions covered with snow as well.

I kid you not, here in DC, recess was CANCELLED due to the flurries!

Posted by: dcteacherchic | January 15, 2008 12:43 PM | Report abuse

No snow/flurries in North Arlington all day.

Wretched snow falling in Bowie. Seriously, am I going to have to clean off my car to get home?

Posted by: dynagirl | January 15, 2008 12:48 PM | Report abuse

Yep, snowing like crazy in Bowie. Temps have fallen too, 28 degrees right now!

Posted by: jtf | January 15, 2008 12:49 PM | Report abuse

(that's down from a high of 35 a few hours ago, by the by)

What about the chance of snow for next week...maybe Wednesday or Thursday????

Posted by: Anonymous | January 15, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse

To the previous commenter ... you are correct there could be something on the horizon long about Thursday next week. But that is an eternity in the land of weather models. Let's get through the potential storm for *this* Thursday first :)

Posted by: Dan, Capital Weather Gang | January 15, 2008 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Re: Weekend temps

Models continue trending warmer for this weekend. It will still be cold, but maybe not as cold as forecasted earlier.

And, we are now halfway through "meteorlogical" winter! (Dec-Feb)

Posted by: Ivan | January 15, 2008 3:10 PM | Report abuse

OMG! the snow was so pretty! I was in DC around 11:45 am and the snow was coming down. But I heard that areas north and west of us got more snow. I think frostburg, maryland yesterday got about 3 inches. I hope we get a huge snowstorm this year....

Posted by: Charlie | January 15, 2008 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Missed the snow earlier today due to a room with no windows... let's hope that's not the last of the season!!! Apparently a heavy squall came through around 11:20 (Leesburg) but lasted for no more than 10 mins.
