Crashing 'Canes and New Chief

By Jason Samenow

The Discovery Channel program "Smash Lab" will air a new episode all about hurricanes. The Smash Lab teams test whether a special type of carbon fiber used to reinforce tunnels can also be used to hurricane-proof homes. The episode will air tonight at 10pm, Sunday 1/27 at 10am, and Monday 1/28 at 9pm. Here is a preview:

On the Smash Lab Web site, there's a special feature called Control the Crash where you can watch the hurricane-force winds blow down a building in slow-motion, so you can really analyze what happens during that type of situation.

Speaking of hurricanes, the National Hurricane Center officially has a new chief. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its 30-year veteran Bill Read will take the post yesterday. Steve had mentioned the naming of a new director was in the works on Thursday.

Seems as though NHC chiefs arrive at that position late in their careers and often retire within a few years of appointment (exception: Tony Proenza, who got the boot over his QuikSCAT flap).

It's getting somewhat like the turnover at Redskins coaching positions these days. Just heard that Snyder fired both Williams and Saunders. I'm hoping it doesn't hurt the team next year.
