Update: Snow Sliding North, Ice Still on Track

By Dan Stillman

*Winter Storm Warning in effect until 10 p.m. Friday night*

Throughout the day we've been monitoring the potential for an approaching winter storm to serve up an appetizer of light snow tonight, and a main course of freezing rain tomorrow.

Tonight: The latest data shows the heaviest of tonight's snow sliding just north of DC. The result may be overnight snow accumulations that are on the lower end of those shown in our earlier accumulation map, with about 1 inch in the immediate metro area and 1-3 inches for Montgomery County and points north. A further northward shift in the precipitation could limit snow accumulations even more, especially from DC toward points south.

Because the air is so dry, it's very difficult to pinpoint what time steady snow (more than just flurries) will develop in the metro area tonight. Best guess is around or before midnight, but could be earlier especially north and northwest of town.

Tomorrow: A morning transition (from south to north) from snow to sleet and freezing rain, and then mostly freezing rain through much of the day tomorrow, still looks like a good bet. Significant slipperiness due to ice, along with school closures, are likely. Temperatures tomorrow, mainly in the mid 20s to near 30, could climb to slightly above freezing in DC and points south and east late in the day, turning freezing rain into plain rain. Precipitation should taper off tomorrow night.

Next update by 11 p.m., including updated accumulation map, timeline, Schoolcast and more.

See Josh's post for the weekend forecast and early next week.
