News & Notes: Southeast Tornado Outbreak

Last night's tornado in Atlanta:

  • Significant damage occurred in downtown Atlanta, including to Georgia Dome and at CNN Center. See: Tornado Trashes Atlanta from CNN.com
  • Tornado that struck Atlanta last night was 200 yards wide and cut a path six miles long

Today's storms:

  • State of Emergency in Atlanta
  • A major tornado outbreak continues in eastern Georgia and South Carolina where numerous warnings are in effect. This area is under a high risk of severe thunderstorms according to the Storm Prediction Center.

OK, I feel guilty having had a great day of sailing here when severe storms are happening in the SE. A friend from Atlanta was on the boat today - we all spent the day worrying about his girlfriend, who stayed home in ATL. When is the severe weather going to move out of there?

I took a screenshot of the most AMAZING hook echo I've ever seen from the Columbia, SC NWS radar. I wonder how big the tornado in this was?
