Forecast: Fair Weather Returns

By Brian Jackson

We've paid our dues with severe thunderstorms yesterday and will be rewarded with mostly fine weather today and tomorrow. Gradually brighter and drier days will round out our weekend and start the work week. Unsettled weather will return by mid-week as a front stalls out across the area providing a focus for more thunderstorms to develop.

TODAY (SUNDAY)

Partly to mostly sunny. 80-85 Today the front responsible for yesterday's storms sinks to our south and high pressure builds in behind it. Clouds will be on the decrease and we should see a good deal of sunshine in most parts of the area by afternoon. However, enough instability may linger that a stray shower pops up mainly south and east of the metro area. Humidity should gradually decrease but temperatures will remain warm. Highs will reach the low 80s. Winds will be breezy from the west at 10-20 mph.

It will be a fine night to be out and about. Expect clear skies and crisp temperatures dropping to the upper 50s (even low 50s in the cooler suburbs). Winds will slack off, blowing from the northwest at around 10 mph.

Keep reading for the forecast into early next week.

TOMORROW (MONDAY)

Mostly sunny. Low 80s. Beautiful weather should fight off any case of the Mondays you may be feeling. Sunny skies will greet you as you step outside in the morning and remain all day long. Highs again will reach the lower 80s

Overnight, skies remain clear early but expect some high clouds moving in towards morning as a warm front nears the area. Low temperatures remain mild with temperatures hovering around 60.

Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Tuesday and Wednesday bring a return of unsettled weather. On Tuesday, a northward drifting warm front will be the focus for scattered thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon (30% chance) Skies will become mostly cloudy with highs reaching the low 80s. Confidence: Medium-High

Wednesday will be pretty similar to Tuesday. We'll have another mostly cloudy day and the humidity will increase. We'll see an elevated chance for rain (50%) as the front stalls over our area. Temperatures should reach the lower 80s. Confidence: Medium

Does this mean I'm in the clear for my wedding in Frederick? One of the B'more TV station said rain is a chance today.

Ugh - another SCA. Gusts to 25. My craft is small enough to take advice, so I guess no sailing again today...despite the fact that I got out of bed at this uncivilized hour on a weekend. ;-)

BTW, you CWG guys did a terrific job with this storm system, accurately predicting it well in advance and then keeping us updated throughout. I appreciate it! (Hope no typos; haven't put my contacts in yet) ~sg, seems like your boat's done more sitting than sailing this Spring; I hope things work out better for you in the Summer!

Storm with a rumble of thunder just now in LoCo bootheel. You can see it clearly on radar...of course, the sun is out too! Was looking at the tomatoes in the garden when it started to shower - felt soooo nice...Saw that shelf cloud driving north on 28 towards Centreville/Chantilly yesterday. It definitely had an appendage sticking out of it, but looking at radar, any tornado would have been well south toward Manassas. Very nasty storm -- I didnt see hail, but it was reported in my neighborhood as dime sized...

Getting pretty dark here in Lake Ridge. There are some popcorn thunderstorms popping up moving East-West through the area. I just had to turn on the lights. Eek!

Wow, when that sun is blasting combined with that evaporating moisture on the ground it sure feels like a sauna out there today.
