Forecast: Hello Again to Heat and Humidity
Thunderstorms possible, especially this weekend
Don't let the past few days of seasonable heat and humidity fool you: Temperatures will shoot up into the 90s today along with a palpable increase in humidity as high pressure moves offshore and allows for a steamy southerly flow. This setup will hold through early next week, with downright muggy -- and possibly quite stormy -- conditions this weekend. Get those A/C units cranking again!
Mostly sunny & hot. More humid. Mid 90s. Mostly sunny skies today along with an increasing flow from the south will allow highs to spike into the mid 90s in most spots, along with breezy winds from the southwest at 10-20 mph. Humidity will also move upward, but not as dramatically as temperatures. A few strong thunderstorms may pop up during the late afternoon or evening.
Partly cloudy and muggy overnight with lows only dropping to 70-75.
Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend into early next week.
Mostly sunny, hot & humid. Low to mid 90s. Mostly sunny skies and rather humid conditions Friday morning will give way to more clouds during the afternoon hours along with a chance of a late-afternoon or early-evening thunderstorm. Highs will reach the low to mid 90s and it'll be humid. Overnight, "lows" will eventually fall to the low 70s across the "cooler" suburbs to the mid 70s downtown -- all the while quite muggy.
Though afternoon high temperatures may drop a couple degrees over the weekend, humidity levels will actually increase to truly oppressive levels and we'll look for the potential for widespread thunderstorms during the second half of both days -- some of which may be heavy and gusty. Saturday's highs should be in the low 90s, while Sunday's highs will probably be in the upper 80s. Both nights will feature muggy conditions with thunderstorms possible and lows in the low to mid 70s. Confidence: Medium
The outlook for Monday is a little less certain, as it depends on how quickly a large area of low pressure moves away. We'll call for partly sunny skies along with the continued chance for thunderstorms. Temperatures look like they may not be as hot -- in the mid 80s for highs. Confidence: Low-Medium

Could do without the high humidity. I am going to the Folklife Festival Sunday afternoon, should I change my plans?

Any good way to predict how the humidity will affect in-flight visability for us private pilots? That think humid haze isn't much fun.

More altocumulus and altostratus this morning than yesterday. Also more haze and humidity. I think there's a Code Orange in effect; some buses will be free.

Re: Code Orange
In VA, free bus rides only on Code RED days this year. Guess it got too expensive for the state last year doing both Code Orange and Red.

I'm headed out to Culpeper with a friend today to see their new house - so hopefully any surprise thunderstorms wait til I get home to show themselves.
SPC says slight risk for severe weather Saturday and Sunday. My weather radio sure is getting a workout this year. Sheesh!
