"We Are In the Tornado"

Last week, four boy scouts tragically lost their lives when a tornado struck their camp in western Iowa. Storm chasers following the storm accidentally got caught in it and captured this jaw-dropping video:

Remember the video we showed a few weeks ago when cars were flung through the air? These guys were incredibly fortunate to drive away from this storm alive. If you're wondering why the heck they would endanger themselves like that, you ask a great question. In a blog post on their Web site SevereStudios.com, the chasers claim they did not intend to drive into the storm, but lost communication with one of their team members who was tracking it.

The fact that seasoned, professional chasers found themselves in middle of a tornado underscores the risk of this activity. Some day, someone will lose their life chasing a tornado -- it's only a matter of time.

I saw that video on the weather channel and CNN the other day. Scary stuff. I couldn't help but think of the movie "Twister," when the guys in the black SUV got sucked up in the huge tornado and thrown back to ground in a fiery explosion. Yikes.

OK, this was a cooler video than Recycling Dragon. But this one was scary. I can't believe they turned around and followed it!

Despite its size, that was probably an F0 or F1 tornado. Any more, and they probably wouldn't have made it.

Without a doubt the winds couldn't have been THAT strong or their vehicle would have not stayed on the road.

They were (stupidly) close to it. They should have abandoned their vehicle and taken cover in the roadside ditch.

Might not be so lucky next time. And given their "success" in evading death (play on CNN, MSNBC, etc) will only encourage others to get close enough for that awesome video footage.

wxthr: I agree-- I don't think they were in the tornado, but on the very edge of it. It looks like they're immediately adjacent to the funnel at one point.

I believe there was a radar outage at the time they drove into the tornado. That said, I think they pushed the limit for a good video to stream on the web.

I have no idealistic problem with what they did. Those guys know exactly what a tornado can do to them and its a risk they are willing to take. They know perfectly well that if one of their safeguards - in this case a working radar - goes kaput, then they very well could go kaput. By the way, I love watching these things....that said, wxthr is exactly right about that they should have gotten out of that car and lied flat anywhere...if it wasnt an EF0 or 1 then they very well may have not made out unscathed. For twister videos, theres a wild one of the Suffolk tornado on youtube where a homeowner has his camcorder on and goes to the front window and all you see is this wedge heading right at him from about 100-150 yards across a field. Search "Suffolk Tornado (Raw Footage) April 28th 2008" and its easy to find. Now that is terror. And good youtube.
