Alert: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 8 P.M.
If it's Saturday it must mean a chance of storms, right? The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 p.m. for the metro area. Storms that develop may be capable of producing dangerous lightning, large hail and wind gusts to 70 mph.
Chances look to be about 40% that any given location will catch a storm this afternoon or evening. Areas along I-95 and to the east look to stand the best chance of severe conditions. Periods of the afternoon and evening will be rain-free. Any storm activity should dissipate by around 8-9 p.m.

I see a tornado warning issued for NE of Baltimore -- currently 87 degrees in Hayfield/Kingstowne area of SE Fairfax County with clouds thickening and appearing to build "upward" as I write this -- appears that the sun is gone for the day, but when we had it it was QUITE hot out. Looks like the storm line NW of us on a roughly Baltimore-to-Elkins, WV line is filling in and moving steadily toward us -- hitting at about 6-7 p.m.? Just a guess-timate. Let's be careful out there...

Tornado has been reported on the ground near Bel Air, Md. with that storm. Storms today are isolated but big and wanting to rotate.

In Annandale, notwithstanding its bright sunny skies, a roll of thunder was just heard.

Hayfield/Kingstowne Update: Brilliant sun back out, back up to 87 degrees, those castle-like clouds to the NW I mentioned earlier are now sending out deep rumbles of thunder every few minutes -- looks like a storm is forming just to the north of us in Arlington County and moving toward Alexandria and SE Fairfax County. Maybe this will take the severe sting out of any storms to come after it...

Whoooa! Annandale, sunny bright, not even a breeze, but thunder is cracking, harsh and loud.

Well, here we go -- NWS just issued a Severe T'storm Warning for our general corner of Fairfax County and the District. Guess that storm formed a lot quicker than I thought...

Weird -- according to the radar loop, which shows us here in Georgetown to be covered by a red/orange blip right now, it's a gentle rain with broken sunshine. As pleasant as it can be.

Annandale darkening. A big gust of wind sucked, slammed an inner door shut, always an ominous sign it's time to lower my storms...

I had a similar experience in Bethesda, Georgetowner.... Unpleasant red/orange blip passed by but other than a slight darkening of the sky, nothing happened except two rumbles of thunder AFTER the blip already went through.
So-my question for the smart people out there-can we expect more activity tonight, or does it still look reasonably safe for the Nats game? (I was considering venturing down there, but since I don't have a ticket yet, I can still take it or leave it. :P)

Think the "severe" storm has bypassed us here in Hayfield; still some thunder but no big deal. Since the sun has made a full return I'm wondering if it will bake (and thereby destabilize) the atmosphere for that 2nd line of storms that still seems to be forming to our west.

Jed in Bethesda -- check out Weather Underground's radar. It looks (to me) like we have/had one emerging, broken line of storms that just went over us, and that there's another broken line forming just north of a Baltimore-to-WV line. Don't know how much of a wallop that 2nd line will pack, but it may aid in making your decision to trek down to Nats Stadium tonight...

Crystal City here, just got home from Potomac Yard shopping. BB-sized hail started on our way to the car, and we stayed in the lot rather than drive home. Intense wind for 5-10 minutes, would have made visibility less than optimal. Trees in the parking lot were being blown vigorously.

Watch out for that "bolt from the blue" folks. Still crackling and we've had sun for about 15min. These storms are vigorous.

The storm turned out pretty well for us: a good clip of rain, but nothing especially damaging or dangerous. The kind of summer storm you pray for.

I can see the edge of this storm just grazing south and west past me in Merrifield. It's absolutely beautiful, with patches of bright blue sky on my north side, and the trailing end of the storm lit up pink and orange with the coming sunset. We had a few sprinkles here, but it seems mostly over with now.
