NBC Fires Weather Channel Environmental Unit

By Andrew Freedman

Some on-camera meteorologists also let go

* New (11/24) commentary: Weather Channel Cuts Earn Mixed Reviews *

NBC Universal made the first of potentially several rounds of staffing cuts at The Weather Channel (TWC) on Wednesday, axing the entire staff of the "Forecast Earth" environmental program during the middle of NBC's "Green Week," as well as several on-camera meteorologists. The layoffs totaled about 10 percent of the workforce, and are among the first major changes made since NBC completed its purchase of the venerable weather network in September.

Keep reading for more on The Weather Channel cuts...

The layoffs affected about 80 people, but left the long-term leadership of the network unclear, according to a source who requested anonymity due to the continuing uncertainty at the station.

Among the meteorologists who was let go was Dave Schwartz, a Weather Channel veteran and a viewer staple due to his lively on camera presentations. USA Today reported that meteorologists Cheryl Lemke and Eboni Deon were also let go.

The timing of the Forecast Earth cancellation was ironic, since it came in the middle of NBC's "Green Week," during which the network has been touting its environmental coverage across all of its platforms. Forecast Earth normally aired on weekends, but its presumed last episode was shown on a weekday due to the environmentally-oriented week.

Forecast Earth was hosted by former CNN anchor Natalie Allen, with contributions from climate expert Heidi Cullen. It was the sole program on TWC that focused on global climate change, which raises the question of whether the station will still report on the subject. Cullen's future role at the network is not known.

NBC released the following statement in response to questions about the firings:

The economic realities of recent months have created challenges for everyone in our business. In addition, when NBC Universal purchased the Weather Channel earlier this year, we expected that there would be cost synergies as part of a company reorganization. While it is always difficult to lose valued employees, we are doing our best to minimize the impact, and remain committed to providing the highest quality content that our viewers have come to expect from the Weather Channel.

They let Dave Schwartz go? Oh HECK. NO. I have deleted The Weather Channel from the TV lineup. I went into the Menu and hit "delete" on Channel 27. They shot themselves in the foot with that one. Not that I watched TWC much, but I will never watch it again now.

Ron Riley is retiring as of next Friday (so says and now Dave Schwartz, perhaps the best TV meteorologist EVER, gets the boot? Darnit :(

Well, I am really sorry to see Dave Schwartz go... He is the best! He made weather technology understandable and yet he was funny. Mr. Schwartz is also a great volunteer on the Atlanta charity scene.

Dave Schwartz is the best. what are they thinking? remember Paul Kocin? i am so done with twc.

Never did much care for TWC anyways. NWS > Any Private Sector Meteorology. Always and forever.

Posted by: Havoc737 | November 21, 2008 9:04 PM | Report abuse

NBC would have better served the viewing public if they stopped stupid junkets like Ann Curry's climb to nowhere and kept the TWC environmental team. But oh no. That would have been much too. . . progressive. NBC is trash tv for sure.

No Dave Schwartz...

No Paul Kosin...

Sorry Dave, Cheryl & Eboni. You are all a delightful crew.

The Environmental behind-the-scenes crew, you will be missed.
You can take your talents where they will be appreciated.
Now that NBC is in charge, TWC, unfortunately, will only go downhill. It's already obvious online.

Dave, you were unique and enjoyed. All of you were.

Posted by: HANK2 | November 22, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

You got rid of Dave Schwarz?!?!?!?!!? You're nuts.

Here's an idea: keep Dave and fire Heidi Cullen. Remember when she wanted meteorologists to lose their certifications for even questioning global warming? Well now, let her lose her job so she can work for the Thought Police full time.

I have watched individuals present the current and forecasted weather for fifty years. I would rank Dave Schwartz clearly as the best professional, presenting weather information to the American public. He is always informative, shows a clear understanding of a vast regime of weather phenomena and presents his views with an energy and cheerfulness rarely found in the profession. Some organization is going to be very lucky...let us hope that place is here in San Francisco. A profound loss for The Weather Channel.

Ask me if I care if the Weather Channel goes off the air....

They lost me with the phony and fearmongering "It Could Happen Tomorrow." Never watched the channel again.

It's quite satisfying canceling a channel from ones list of favorites.

Jim Cantori IS the Weather Channel. They'll do fine without the rest of those flakes. I hope they get that rid of that fearmongering airhead Heidi Cullen. She should have gone first. Give people the weather, not a lot of unproven crap. Good riddance.

I'm not sure why, but Dave Schwartz always caught my attention. He was personable, clear, informed, and cool. What a loss for us. Is TWC to become just another entertainment channel for NBC? Who makes these eccentric decisions? Are they really serious about presenting the weather? I fear not.

I'm glad they finally realized this global warming climate change crap is as fake as their news (so called) broadcasts.
It's great to hear 80 people have to find real work now. I wonder how many of them can actually find a job that requires passing a truth test. Oh yeah ! The Cartoon Channel...
Just wait'll Obama and the rest of the democrats get their hands on DC, Then you'll really see job loss.

Please stop calling for Heidi Cullen to be fired. That's not fair.

Instead, if she really cares about the environment (or her vision of it)Heidi should resign out of protest. There's plenty of other jobs, even in Atlanta, probably a pretty good one at CNN feeding Anderson Cooper.

Truth is, I turn off TWC every time Forecast Earth or Cullen shows up. It's just cloying, juvenile, and one-sided. I suspect I am not the only one who does this, and that's what the ratings showed, too.

The level of ignorance on this comment board is astounding. This was a marketing decision, not a scientific declaration. What the hell is wrong with you people???

Every governmental scientific organization in every major develop nation across the world agrees on two things: Global Warming IS HAPPENING NOW and our CLIMATE is CHANGING because of it.

If you can't tell the difference between climate and weather, consult a dictionary. You wonder why the country's in a mess? Break away from your Fox News for five seconds and look in the goddman mirror.

"The timing of the Forecast Earth cancellation was ironic, since it came in the middle of NBC's "Green Week," during which the network has been touting its environmental coverage across all of its platforms."

Actually, the "Green" in "Green Week" refers to all the money NBC hoped to make by hyping the AGW myth to the naive. In that sense it's "ironic". To those naive enough to believe in AGW (the author?), the there is not "ironic", it is a "coincidence".

The level of ignorance of some posters is astounding. 1. Official temp recording stations have been increasingly urbanized as (warmer) population centers creep into what used to be outlying airports. 2. 1998 "hottest year ever" was false and has been proven so by NASA's own figures. 3. Last month's temp readings out of Russia were duplicates of September readings due to equipment failure (falsely warm) and 4. Global ocean temps have leveled off while global atmospheric temps have declined slightly in the last SEVERAL years. These are the same people who blamed America for global cooling and a threatened ice age back in the early 70's. Even after Mt. Pinatubo belched several years of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere over a couple weeks, most effects were undetectable in less than 2 years. Pollution is real. Manmade global climate change is not. If you want to give up your liberties there are many places on earth where you can do so, but why not leave everyone else alone. That goes for Heidi, too. I'm probably the only endangered species she doesn't mind.

nickmatiella - WOW!!! Anyone who knows anything about the geological history of the Earth and it's climate knows that Global Warming is a crock of S*&^. Ask the people in Eastern Europe how that Global Warming thing is going for them. They're hunkering down for the coldest winter in recorded history! lol

Side note - I worked for the company that produced It could happen tomorrow, and it's not phony. They are all situations that could occur. In fact, the reason it got picked up is the pilot episode was what would happen if a Category 3+ hurricane hit New Orleans. They shot it in April, editing was done in May/June... a few months later Katrina hit. They got picked up but lost the episode for the season, later turning it into it's own special.

Either way, I think it's hilarious that the Global Warming protest got snowed out this year/has been snowed out before. If these people were a bit smarter you'd think they'd choose a hotter month to make their case.

None of this is surprising. John Coleman's dream died decades ago, and it appears that by eliminating key talent such as Dr. Kocin and Dave Schwartz, the goal of a complete weather "dumb-down" is complete.

As for the environmental unit... Hey, the election is over. As Bush 43 said on the carrier, "Mission Accomplished" They have their man in place to enact global warming legislation now. Once the environmental regulations are in place, then you'll be watching stories about how global warming is reversing itself. A self fulfilling prophecy!

When NBC purchased TWC, my initial thoughts were positive, based upon the dismal leadership of the Landmark Executives. While the future may indeed be better for the channel without idiots from Norfolk calling the shots, NBC is off to a poor start for axing Dave Schwartz.

NBC should hire John Coleman as a consultant, instead of relying on focus group data implemented by sales and marketing dullards who lack a clear understanding of their own resources, content, and with the axing of Schwartz, talent.

Oh well, at least we have the internet.

NBC should consult the internet for "Petition to the Government" and "Manhattan Resolution" to read the names of 31,000 scientists (9,000 PhD's among them) who signed these documents affirming tha human activities have no influence on global climate. Globaloney warming is a huge socialist hoax just like globaloney cooling some 30-odd years ago (Dr. Hansen, Algore's main guru "predicted" both).

Not surprising! I knew when the announcement was initially made that GE was buying the Weather Channel that GE's intent was to push some stupid social environmental agenda into the Weather Channel and the hell with focusing on weather!

GE wonders why its stock is down to $12 a share!! I am getting sick of that company pushing social agendas down the American Peoples' throats like what we see at NBC, for example. Issues that are not even relevant to their core business or the interest of the American Consumer. Like eliminating incandescent light bulbs. What nut job decided this was to go and bring in poisonous flourescent bulbs that are so uncomfortable to work under.

Way to go GE, you destroy just about everything that is good about America. Your actions at the Weather Channel are just another example. I would expect to now see the Weather Channel turned into some environmental platform to push this stupid Global Warming garbage. Rather than just being experts at weather, they want to use the platform for their socialist agenda.

Man causes a small portion of global climate change by virtue of his existance and sometimes abuse of the planets resources, but far from the hysterical levels forecast by the BS artist and global warming guru Al Gore. Any who bought into his hysteria and propogated it, is responsible for junk science, and should be fired. Carbon credits are the same as junk bonds, with the same level of honesty behind them. Sure, we need to improve the efficiency of our use of non renewable resources, and explore and innovate without bankrupting the worlds' economy with the application of junk science. Anyone who juggled the books should be banished to the artic circle, if not sued, after all, it is going to be really warm up there. Oh well. The Weather Channel hasn't been worth watching in years. They might as well rename it The Outdoors Channel For Those Who Dont Hunt Or Fish. It's just a lifestyles network now. And the environmental programming is ridiculous. How is a ten minute long PSA for recycling related to global warming?

Cheryl Lemke and Dave were probably let go because they still believes in the purpose and profitability of the OLD Weather Channel format.....I never saw much of Eboni Deon- she was hired after I already stopped being a TWC fan- but I'd assume it was the same for her.

TWC has fallen so far.... CNN, Fox, and MSNBC....even my local affiliates....have better coverage during hurricane season, it seems. And they're all terrible. I'd love to see one of the big three news networks hire Dave Schwartz and give him a real outlet for his knowledge, communication, and teaching skills. Well, maybe not MSNBC. What is this uproar? The "Global Warming" hoax is a political money grab. It has been exposed as such and TWC spent all of their time trying to attach "global warming" to every weather anomaly that occurred. It is nice to see some of these "fakers" being sent to pasture. NBC and most other media outlets should do more to expose the fraud than to give it legs. It's political BS, not "global warming" or "climate change".

Typical corporate stupidity. They fired
everyone making a high salary, I imagine.
I've loathed TWC for the last 15 years.
Switch to Accuweather. The only good news is that the robots that fired everyone will get fired themselves next year. Cheers.

The best thing TWC ever did was to cut Cullen!

There was just a huge overabundance of mere OPINION getting expressed as 'factual information' for the gullible public. This was agenda, pushing propaganda!

Some VERY disgusting stuff, and responsible for driving me away from TWC a couple years back.

I may watch TWC once in a while again.

Dave Schwartz has been a staple in my family for many has Cheryl Lemke. They let the two most qualified, professional and personable folks go!? Give me a break. Fine, weather channel. I have a favorites menu on my satellite and you will promptly be gone. I hope that Dave and Cheryl find prominent work on a nationwide telecast somewhere. They are too good to be treated this way. I am appalled and disappointed that two fine meteorologists got the shaft this way. Way to go NBC. First your network channel sucks, then you destroyed MSNBC by becoming the liberal hack channel run by looney Keith Olbermann, and now this? Nice way to destroy whatever credibility you had. I hope you drown and fail!

Pity they ditched Schwartz, but it sounds like they can get by without most of the rest of those guys. People watch TWC to find out if it's gonna rain next weekend, not for their lame half-hour 'weather-related journalism' shows.

NBC should have canned the hold phony "Weather" Channel! Never watch it...but skip over it on my way to one of the rare worthwhile channels on US TV. What a waste. Advice like "wear a jacket" to adults! And when they began their PC mission of promulgating GW ignorance they did a disservice to all least those few who weren't watching Obama strut.

What has Al Gore said about this?

The nerve............

Posted by: allenridge | November 23, 2008 7:13 AM | Report abuse

"Every governmental scientific organization in every major develop nation across the world agrees on two things: Global Warming IS HAPPENING NOW and our CLIMATE is CHANGING because of it.

If you can't tell the difference between climate and weather, consult a dictionary. You wonder why the country's in a mess? Break away from your Fox News for five seconds and look in the goddman mirror."

I do believe somone is drinking the Kool Aid and wearing blinders. If you would simply quit praying to your ALgore god long enough, you would see that there is plenty of dissent amongst highly qualified scientist to the contrary. There would be many more dissenters if the risk of being branded a "heritic" by the GW Inquisition (and therefore blackballed)wasn't such an absolute. GW is not about science. It's not about truth. It's about political power. There is and are billions of dollars to be made off the Global Warming hype. Just look at Britains taxation policies and the burdens it places on it's citizens and business all in the name of Global Warming. If this was truely a scientific endevour, there would be room for different viewpoints. There isn't.
YOU are a prime example of why this cannot be discussed scientifically. Amongst all the people here criticizing the concept of GW, YOU are the first to paint all that do not agree with YOU as "IGNORANT". Not suprising-- not at all. Expected really-- what took you so long? We were beginning to wonder! Congratulations!

Mostly personal, but I particularly hate to see Cheryl go. She started her career in Terre Haute, IN and was a real class act in a small, rural market. She never got enough air time on TWC. If there is any justice, she will get picked up by another network or major station.

Posted by: Tregonsee | November 23, 2008 7:20 AM | Report abuse

TWC had turned into the commercial channel. There were more ads per hour than any other cable station (other than infomercials).

It IS curious that they were too liberal for the "slightly left of center" NBC (with our President-Elect now defining the new center). Still, they kept some of the professionals like Cantori. NBC has a competing weather channel. Do they now think they can control the weather by controlling our information about it? Let's see, they kept the fraudulent liar Heidi Cullen. NOT a PhD in meteorolgy, BTW, but a philosopher! Talk about a take over by the intellectual elite! Do not worry about these lazy liberals, they will be well taken care of by the next administration in Washington DC for their loyalty to the lies thought up by Al Gore. Working people will pay for them to sit on their rear ends and write "books" on it. Good riddance.

And for the foolishness of those who are trying to separate weather, from climate they are partners people. What affects A front comes through and the temperature rises or falls. Climate change is the essence of our world or else we would still be sitting in the ice age. Yes we need to take care of our environment, but no we aren't responsible for the warming since the ice age. Happened without us and without

That is what killed TWC for me.

She is the one who should have her credentials revoked.

Capitalism is a very powerful thing. If you can't pay the bills, the system stops.

Frankly, I think she saw an opportunity to jump on the Al Gore bandwagon and cash in rather than address the facts. Hmm.. 1998 was the hottest year...that same year was the most active for solar storms, which even knocked out satellites and some power grids... these last two years... coldest temps... and not a single sunspot on the disk... could their be a connection?? Ya Think? DUH!

First, it's YOU who are confusing issues - you are confusing leftist politics and the weather.

Just to help you keep up with current events - sun spot activity is down and the Earth is GETTING COLDER!

Second, Fox's ratings are going UP, not down. They're paying their bills. It's TWC that isn't. Deal with it.

I agree with those citing the unwanted, agenda-driven propaganda on TWC.

But the reason I stopped watching TWC years ago is simply this. They barely give the weather forecasts for the nation anymore.

I was traveling last week and wanted to see the weather back home. All I saw was continual jabbering about the northeast and the strip across the bottom for local weather. Useless.

Before they went down the propaganda route, one could get the nation's weather every 15 minutes.

The XM radio in my rental car gave me better weather information.

PS: I predict TWC will really be jabbering about the northeast when we get an ass-ripping cold winter in a few months. That's why "global warming" jabber is replace by "climate change." It ain't warming.

OHMYGAWD! .. a little less than one-degree. Well, we might as well all do a "Jim Jones" and just end our lives now!

Maybe NBS realizes that (manmade) "Global Warming" is a hoax designed to pry more money from YOUR wallet and drop into Algoron's! I mean, the guy who couldn't win an election has found a way to at least fool SOME people into thinking he's relevant, and has made him insanely wealthy to boot.

Hello folks this is the WEATHER CHANNEL we are talking about. Weather forecasters and prognosticators, speculators and repeaters of history that already happen within their knowledge. So WHAT. So much bigger things to worry about at this moment then a few people on TV doing weather and shows about a Global Warming or whatever they are calling it this month. Here is a forecast for you. Man will end up destroying the planet trying to destroy another man before we will kill it by driving a car or using plastic.

THAT is truly offensive.

The "green" unit was probably the unit that SHOULD have been fired; the 'global warming' hoax has taken on a quasi-religious tone that ignores alternative views from reputable sources. When TWC's Heidi Cullen proposed pulling the credentials of her fellow meteorologists who haven't bought into this questionable 'science,' I determined that 'Global Warming' was the latest home of disaffected leftists who want to tell the rest of us how to run our lives.

When will people realize that man-made 'global warming' is just another vehicle for the anti-capitalist crowd to use in their attempt to push us around? The world has cooled and heated many times over the life of the planet...did the Ice Age end because of the cavemen's SUV's??? In 1975, liberals warned us of a new 'Ice Age' we're being told the planet is heating. Yawn.

The thing that makes man-made global warming a HOAX, besides no facts exist to back it up, is that there is NO CONTROL GROUP.

In order to draw the conclusions they're drawing, there would have to be another planet identical to Earth in every way - except without MAN - that wasn't heating up.

The argument that man is heating the planet up is BAD SCIENCE. It's nothing but supposition without a control group. Moreover, it's not backed up by facts. It's driven by hysteria - and money, of course.

I hate to see Mr. Schwartz go; he was very professional and really presented the weather in a clear and interesting way. This may sound so simplistic but I think if we all lived to be as old as Methuseleh, we would see all sorts of natural climate change. There is a reason why the Vikings called Greenland Greenland, because a thousand years ago, it was green. And it is just on its way back to that state. That is global warming I can understand.

It is good to recycle and to preserve water and our forests, but with so many scientists on the other side of man being the cause of global warming, it is too bad that those of us who would like to hear all sides of the argument, are called ignorant. I thought this was a democracy where all views were treated with respect. Apparently, in all areas of life, that respect has gone down the toilet.

With GE going downhill they bought NBC. Then with the NBC management they drove it into the toilet. So when NBC bought the Weather Channel I knew it would go downhill as well.

Yep it has. The only positive thing they did was get rid of the Enviro crap.

Every time I wanted to know what the weather was, I'd tune in and find some stupid hour long program. I'd then have to go to the Internet to get weather.

Dave Swartz, Jim Cantori and the late John Hope were the only three who not only gave the weather, but they would explain how some of the systems worked that caused specific conditions. I could always count on accurate weather whenever Dave or Jim were on. Otherwise I didn't bother tuning in. The others seemed more like teleprompter readers with good arm movements.

Now that Dave is gone, Jim is not enough to hold me to the Weather Channel. I now get more accurate forecasts from the farmers around here.

Yes, Dave Schwarz and Cheryl Lemke are two Weather Channel originals who should be kept if possible.

And Heidi Cullen too has done a good service trying to educate about global warming. With scientific literacy in this country at embarassingly low levels, we need all the information communicated to the public we can get. If you look at all the evidence it's clear to me that the global warming trend is real (see Arctic ice melt and glacier retreats), and people are the main cause (see CO2 level rises). Action on this is easier to take now than it is later on.

It is so tiring listening to the lectures on man-made global warming. Two words: Prove It!
CO2 emissions - please! CO2 is a trace gas in the atmosphere - less than .1%, while nitrogen is 78% and oxygen is 21%. CO2 is plant food and plants soak-up whatever is put into the air. We are told that 370 ppm is a disaster...prove it! Do you know commercial green houses will inject CO2 into the air to get the concentration up to 1000ppm because the plants grow so much faster in a CO2 rich environment?
The fact is climate change is always happening. I have no faith in the so-called established scientific and government organizations because they have been corrupted by politics and grant extortion. Global warming hysteria is a political agenda to limit individual liberties thru government control.

With regards to "proving" global warming, what kind of proof should there be? Think of it as an insurance policy, most people buy health insurance even though there is no "proof" that they will become sick.

It's pretty suggestive evidence though that CO2 levels now are higher than anytime in probably the past several or even 10 million years - before our species existed. What if the skeptics are wrong - once the CO2 genie is out of the bottle it is very difficult to get the high levels back down. Temperature is also spiking up as per the hockey stick graph. Are we supposed to go back to the CO2 levels and climate of the dinosaur days? Is it morally correct for humanity to have that much power over the planet?

Please keep you head in the sand and watching Fox for your news. Are "we" the sole factor in global warming? No... but we sure can help it along. Even evangelist groups are joining the "reduce our impact" movements of late. I'm sure the guy who blames it on Sun Spots got that from Fox and Friends, lol. Too funny. If Rupert Murdoch can tell the writers at the Wall Street Journal what stories to push I shouldn't be so surprised at the levels of mis-information assumed to be truth. I'm not saying that we know everything about Global Warming, but let's make some educated guesses and not deny our involvement, lol. discount - as I mentioned earlier the Earth on average is getting warmer and this is the reason for sea level rising more quickly in recent times. Both expansion of the warmer water and melting glaciers make the sea level rise. So I have to disagree with the premise of your first question.

Yes, "climate change" is a more neutral buzzword, yet "global warming" gets more to the point I think.

In very cold places, warmer air can hold more moisture, so in these cases there can be more snow and ice buildup. It's true things are more complicated in parts of Antarctica, yet the bottom line is average temperatures of the Earth as a whole are rising without a natural explanation.

to scalbers and all you other man-made GW fanatics, let me do some math for you....

Since the industrial revolution, CO2 has risen about 70 ppm or so.

OK, I'll buy that.

Now, let's see what that really means.

I will use the dollar bill analogy.

A dollar bill os 0.0043 inches thick.

A million of them would stack (1,000,000 X 0.0043/12) 358 feet.

If dollar bills were STACKED, they would go a distance of 358 feet. Now a football field is 300 feet and the endzones are 30 feet each. So, if you think of a foot ball field (including BOTH end zones) you will get an idea of how many parts a million is.

Now, the CO2 levels have risen 70 ppm.

So, the equivalent distance (CO2 rise since the industrial revolution) would be (0.0043 X 70) 0.3 inches.

What you CO fanatics are trying to tell us is that 0.3 INCHES of CO2 is enough poison to override 358 FEET of all the other atmospheric gasses and destroy the planet.

And, you are making that leap without a scientific control group.

Get real.

If you choose to buy that bilge, fine. Don't expect me to.

I've heard polar bears are increasing on some land areas since they are fleeing their preferred habitat on the melting sea ice. Regarding CO2 rise, it is about 100ppm so far and projected to be much more in the future based on current societal trends. Yes, trace gases can have large effects, for example methane is 23 times more potent (per unit volume) than even CO2. All you have to do is get out your spectroscope and look in the infrared band.

Posted by: scalbers | November 23, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

CO2 also acts like a trigger to increase water vapor and that about doubles the warming effect. The water vapor would increase by ROUGHLY a couple of percent, or more than 10000 ppm.

Posted by: scalbers | November 23, 2008 4:46 PM | Report abuse

I wish I could edit my previous post, the water vapor increase roughly should be 100ppm as well. It would increase by a couple of percent over its previous concentration. Hope I'm not being too mathematical here.

scalbers, let me help you out here....

Water vapor IS the number one greehouse gas. It's well over 90% of all greenhouse gasses.

Until we can control the process of EVAPORATION, we don't have a prayer of affecting greenhouse gasses to any significant degree.

If you are willing to destroy our economy over 0.3 inches in 358 feet worth of CO2, then you are...

You're probably a teenager who simply hasn't had to pay their own bills yet.

That could explain it.

We can't make the wind blow, we can't make the wind stop blowing, we can't make it rain and we can't make it stop raining.

Yet you want me to think we have the power to destroy the planet because of a 0.3 inch increase in CO2 since the industrial revolution.

That's less than a third of an inch out of a football field scalbers - do you understand that? That's like five blades of grass out of an entire football field.

AND YOU want ME to think that's worth destroying our economy over????

Posted by: alance | November 23, 2008 5:18 PM | Report abuse

discount - thanks for your help and spirited discussion. I'm well aware of what a part per million is. How many parts per million of arsenic or plutonium would it take have a harmful effect on someone? Sometimes trace amounts can have large effects. Would you be willing to get out a spectroscope as I suggested and see how much of an effect these parts per million (i.e. blades of grass) can have?

We do agree though that water vapor is the largest natural greenhouse gas. It is the changes in these values triggered by humanity that are significant though, both for CO2 and water vapor. A doubling of CO2 still triggers about 5 degrees F global warming.

Thanks for the complement, I wish I was still a carefree teenager ;)

CO2 is indeed plant food - the plants clearly haven't been able to gobble up enough of the CO2 to prevent its increase.

Attacking global warming here in the US is good for the economy as it creates jobs and makes us more competitive with the rest of the world that is already "on board". It also improves health by cleaning up soot as a side benefit.

It's people like me that have to write checks to employees like you. It's people like me that you want to hog-tie in an effort to assuage your sense of self-guilt.

Here's the thing you don't understand....

Government IS NOT at the center of the economic universe, CAPITALISM IS.

You are looking at economics like a pre-Copernicus astronomer looked at the lights in the sky.

You think government is what makes the economy work. It's not. You think the world revolves around government. It doesn't. Capitalism is boss, not the government.

You clearly understand the magnitude difference between 0.3 inches and a football field. If that doesn't jar you out of your "humans-suck" funk, then nothing will.

The good news is that it isn't getting warmer. It's getting colder. Did you see the temps in Alaska this summer. It never warmed up! In fact, avalanches took out the power transmission lines near Anchorage. There was so much snow that it took out the power plant transmission lines!

Now THAT is a fact.

Global warming (man-made or otherwise) doesn't exist.

Good call discount - I'm not a businessman. Why (given your expertise) are US auto companies not doing as well as ones like Toyota and European companies who are more on board with fuel efficient cars? If US auto companies can make good decisions by themselves, then so much the better. The government has an opportunity though to hold them accountable with the proposed bailout.

I stand by my estimate of 5 degrees warming of CO2 increase - this is consistent with what we are starting to observe in so many ways around the world.

I think humans are great - we're just too much of a good thing. There are clearly insufficient resources on this planet for everyone to have an "American" lifestyle.

The cool summer in Alaska was more than balanced out by warmer weather elsewhere. The global average this year is still above the historical trend for the 20th century.

That, of course, will NEVER happen as some of these people, primarily Al Gore and his buds, stand to make millions, perhaps billions from it. Talk about brainwashing...

There are many countries, and hundreds of world class scientists, that DO NOT subscribe to this "theory". This is currently the second biggest hoax in American history, with the first now being the proclamation that our Lord of Hosts - his holiness Barack Hussein Obama = will bring any "change" to politics. As can be seen by nearly all of his appointments to date, this is pure Clinton administration redeaux, part III. Since Obama has never actually managed anything, he has none of his own Marxist cronies to drag along with him, so he has to rely on the Clinton clan to build an administration from.

Good luck with all of that.

He was always interesting to watch...maybe NBC10 in Philly could hire him since they seem to be a little short-staffed, but I've read budget is the problem there, too. I bet we'll see the top 2 or 3 WeatherPlus mets show up on the Weather Channel along with Al "he isn't qualified to analyze weather data" Roker. As for the environmental unit, since it wasn't balanced I'd turn it off because I don't like to be preached to when vital information that I've read about is ignored. Expect Ann Curry and Anne Thompson from NBC to host "green" specials on the Weather Channel.

As a political junkie who has followed the persistent right wing CORPORATIST bias of NBC for almost a decade, it is not surprising that the debased ethics undergirding the republican campaign will produce these kinds of mindless betrayals of real talent in corporate America. Both Schwartz and Lempke were two of the most polished and competent on-air personalities. But the evident Spiritual dimensions of their personalities are alien to the values of PREDATORY CAPITALISM.

Soon the public will be forced to realize where the STENCH permeating our society is coming from--CAPITALISM IS DEAD. It has failed miserably. As a television producer- director in a former life, I have observed other evidence of declining quality on the weather channel in recent weeks. So who knows what other talent in the supporting infrastructure is being winnowed out.

Perhaps a majority of the public will finally grow sufficiently in Spiritual Consciousness to recognize the profoundly evil implications of a corporation that, in the name of profit, trashes the livelihoods of those same magnificent and loyal staff who created the billion dollar asset that NBC, in this example, has just purchased.

Yes! Capitalism is as dead as the souls of those predators who run the banks, the auto companies, and the international conglomerates. Right now they cannot imagine, and would mock my assertion re the scale and scope of the evil Karma that now ripens for them. But they will soon become believers. SLEEPERS AWAKE!!

Dave Schwartz seemed like one of the most reliable guys around there too -- seemed like he was often filling in for others and he certainly could hold the fort down all by his lonesome on late nites and just chatter away about the weather in a way that was upbeat and funny, even charming in a goofy sort of way. Some of the others are so wooden and awful. Or seem like they would fall apart if they didn't have a buddy in the studio. Poor Dave. Where's the love.

The thing that bugs me the most about the Weather Channel these days is that its "Weather Channel Lite." They gloss over so much, the maps are more simplistic and shown for less time, etc. The hurricane coverage tends to get a little tech now and again for 2 min here and there, thankfully. We need TWC2 (that's more like the old TWC) for the hardcore weather geeks. There's a larger core audience out there than they realize, I think.

If they want to fire someone - get rid of Heidi Cullen and nix the global warming hoax programming. Now NBC could go a long way just giving us the facts re weather or anything else for that matter instead of Anne Curry failing to climb Mount K but not forgetting to show us skinny natives running out of water because the glaciers are melting. The Weather Channel has devolved in the same manner as MTV. TWC was/is at its best when it’s reporting the WEATHER. Storm Chasing, Hurricane Hunting, etc...are TWC’s specialties along with giving daily, weekly and long-range forecasts.

Once TWC took sides in the Global Warming, uhh….Global Climate Change ...or is it… Global Climate Crisis THIS week, TWC lost all credibility with many of its viewers. Heidi is a self-righteous hack who needs to be sent to El offense El Paso... where she can report the summer time weather:

“Temperature approaching triple digits, with clear skies and light wind out of the southwest”...should fit her skill set...or lack of ...nicely.

This will also save her the embarrassment of looking foolish when she tries to play scientists. She's a political animal with more credentials than brains. She thinks education equals intelligence. Someone needs to explain to her scientific aptitude is not a thermometer and as such CANNOT be measured in College Degrees.

This was ENTIRELY a money/profit decision. "Who can we let go and keep our bonuses?"

I remember when the weather channel was nothing more than a roll of regional weather info backed up by great jazz and
cool music with the occasional winter storm warning. Those
were the "pre-"EXTREME" watch me get blown to bits by this lethal hurricane" days.

Once TWC began using the word "EXTREME" for ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, a neon sign was lit that what the station owners REALLY believe in is NOT accurate information, or global crisis education, or intelligent presentation, but RATINGS. Surprise. Dave never had a chance.

The global weather crisis is IN FACT heavily contributed to, if not entirely caused by human abuses to the planet, so it is entirely in keeping with the thoughtlessness of humans that corporate heads cancelled programing that would suggest human responsibility and "let go" the educated people presenting this info.

To all of you who question global warming, I suggest you let go of your denial before an "extreme" monster, historic, out of proportion, out of season, tornado/tsunami/firestorm/drought hits you instead of you neighbor, and start learning about what you can do to help. Plant a tree. Recycle water. Turn off lights.

Those of us left hanging out here will get "balanced" info elsewhere. I suggest the Weather Underground, National Weather Service or NPR.

Leave TWC to it's histrionic, sexist, irresponsible programers and move on, with best wishes that the axed employees will find fair weather employment elsewhere.

This is a true story. During the last Ice Age, Caveman Gort advised his fellow cavemen to put out the fires at the entrance to their caves because the fires were causing the climate to warm and the ice to melt. Caveman Gort's fellow cavemen put out their fires and were soon devoured by hungry cave bears. However, Caveman Gort did not put out the fire at the entrance to his cave and he survived. Then Caveman Gort lead the dead cavemen's widows and children south to a warmer climate where they lived happily ever after. Most humans living today are genetically related to Caveman Gort.

Report the weather dimwits! Stop with the lectures or 'cute' little programs. When I turn to TWC, I want the weather, not what happened in 1944 or how my VERY LARGE F-150 is causing the earth to die.

OK, if global warming is all our fault, then why are the ice caps on Mars shrinking? (And don't even try to tell us that the Viking landers or the Mars rover is at fault. Please.)

Why has warming also been observed in the Jupiter system?

Because solar output variations have far more to do with all of this than we do. Humans haven't been around long enough, geologically speaking, to fully understand what climate variations should be considered "normal" anyway. There is still much for us to learn.

Now, is that a reason NOT to switch to more renewable forms of energy where we can? Of course it isn't. Doing so still makes sense for many other reasons.

Dave Schwartz was a joy to watch. My niece and I would call each other whenever we spotted him on. Apparently he didn't appeal to the 18-35 crowd they were desperate for. But he certainly appealed to anyone with a sense of irony or who felt like he was a truly interesting person you wanted to listen to.

Cheryl Lemke has one of the best speaking voices on TV. She was so clear and precise in her speaking. I always enjoyed listening to her.

Like I said, please educate yourself.

Your misconceptions are vast, your attitudes are tiresome and your conclusions are boorish.

Not only that, but nothing you say is true.

For starters, the earth is NOT getting warmer... not man-made warmer, not naturally warmer.... NOT WARMER, PERIOD!

Deal with it.

Secondly, CO2 is plant food. Get it? Let me type more slowly and maybe it will sink in... P-L-A-N-T F-O-O-D!

The phytoplankton love it.

Ignorance and self-loathing are two of the most expensive things we own in this society and the Left is infested with both!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to drive my Hummer to the airport and go fly my airplane.

Interesting the the Nothing But Crap network, which is nothing more than a DNC outlet, let the political unit go. Someone screwed up big time.

Come on, really. If you watch WEATHER CHANNEL for the programs, you need to get a life. Tune in on the 8s for your forecast, then tune out. The rest is a waste of time and money.

Maybe Obama can retrain these 80 folks to make solar panels, wind turbines and the like...or crappy cars from the Big 3 that nobody wants.

Thanks NBC (never thought I would hear myself say that) for hopefully returning The Weather Channel back to...well, weather.

Posted by: nickmatiella | November 22, 2008 10:38 PM >>

Sorry, Nick, but you are absolutely and totally wrong! There is no so-called agreement about so-called "Global Warming" because it does not exist. To think that Man can alter the earth's climate is the utmost in vanity. The only thing that can increase--or decrease, for that matter--our planet's temperature on a global scale is the sun, which itself has been in a very quiet period the last few years. Consequently, Earth has experienced global COOLING in many areas. Country after country has experienced colder temps, earlier snows and freezes, etc.

Earth's climate changes on its own. The planet's temperature and the temperatures of the oceans also change on their own, with no help from Man. El Sol, on the other hand, has a say-so in that.

An increasing number of your alleged "scientists" have realized that they have been both ignorant and incorrect lo these many years as the data keeps coming in: we're in a cooling down period.

The number 1 reason for house cleaning is that Dave Schwartz was a joy to watch but probably made the wage department sick to pay him. It's too bad but the people at the top who are usually getting the most money are some of the first to go.

Now maybe we can get more weather and less entertainment.

Now maybe we can get more weather and less entertainment.

Or, maybe we can get SOME weather and LESS propaganda.

There's a reason NBC is the sorriest of the 4 ... so did anyone REALLY expect NBC to get it right with TWC?

Of COURSE they were going to fire the only interesting meteorologist and retain the gormless twit. It's in keeping with their corporate mentality. I suppose Fox will come out with a TWC equivalent now and send NBC's purchase into oblivion.

Yes, the 8s are the big thing, but where WE live, little events like IKE take on added significance. It's bad enough to know you may get blown away without having to endure Cullen's piffle, pap and swill.

So, NBC ... when you go (and you will, because you never learn), take Cullen with you. I'd rather watch paint dry; paint can at least cover SOMETHING correctly-- more than I can say for Heidi-ho.

What is going on with TWC? I grew up with Jeanetta Jones and Jim Cantore. Makes me wonder if Marshall Seese voluntarily retired two weeks ago.....No more Dave Schwartz? Disappointed to see you go, my friend......

Awwww, they canned Forecast Earth before I got my federally issued personal carbon unit rationing card with Heidi Cullen's face on the front and algore's face on the back. she worked so hard for that too...sniffle.
I think we can learn to live responsibly without that carbon card in our wallets.
And speaking of wallets, while they blame the USA for heat in China, why don't they blame the third world countries for the deforestation there that is causing some of the intermittent hot spells overseas? Don't be suckered into supporting caps and trade bills. Legislation may start at the corporate level but will wind up on an individual level as we are "protected by the EPA, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and on and on.

Can't believe they got rid of Dave Schwartz - he was always an energetic, interesting, entertaining host. He explained weather concepts without the condescending nonsense ("think of the jetstream as a river of air") that marks some of the other on-camera people. Cheryl Lemke, I'm sure she's a nice person, but her hackneyed cliches and speaking cadence were unbelieveably annoying. Heidi Cullen is an absolute blathering joke - she would have us all living in huts and commuting on bicycles, probably made of bamboo since the rubber tires and aluminum frames have too much of a carbon footprint.

Its impressive how strongly people feel with their opinions about global warming. Things are bordering on personal attacks at times. I'll comment based on several recent comments since my last post.

I agree that I'm not a businessman and probably don't have the constitution for it - however that is irrelevant to the argument about global warming.

Science does have a herd mentality at times, and some can exaggerate about certain aspects of global warming. On the whole however, if you look at the wide variety of evidence and beyond all the shouting I think there really is something to be concerned about.

Regarding the apparent cooling since 1998, 1998 was a spike due to an El-Nino superimposed on the longer term (decadal) warming trend. We've had mostly La-Ninas in the past few years that have temporarily slowed (masked) the warming. If you correct for this you can see the long term trend is continuing as I recall 2005 and 2007 were nearly at the record globally.

Humans clearly can have an impact on the planet if we are already capable of raising CO2 40% above natural levels.

The end of the ice age was a natural occurence, however we are now raising the temperature beyond what its natural peak would have been. It's all about teasing apart the combined influence of natural and human caused changes. There are both, however the present trends over the past few decades are dominated by the human caused component.

Mars by the way has long term climate change due to the way its axial tilt varies. It also changes in the short term depending on whether we are viewing it when at various distances from the sun in its orbit. I think the variations in atmospheric dust content also are a factor in absorbing sunlight. These are obviously natural changes and aren't related to the human caused recent warming on Earth.

Note again that once CO2 gets in the Earth's atmosphere it is difficult to remove it, so an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We really don't have the luxury of waiting until it's blindingly obvious to everyone how warm it is getting, it will unfortunately be too late then to fully reverse it.

What's up with all the Dave Schwartz talk? He's still on. I'm looking at his mug giving the weather report right now!

I'm hoping they reconsidered their decision or that the report was wrong.

Dave 'da bomb!

I am also confused as I see Dave Scwartz on the Weather Channel right now. What's going on?

Bill Cosby was right when he called TWC "MTV for old people." As far as who they get rid of, I would like to see Dave, Cheryl, and Eboni stay. The green unit has no good purpose. The data involved in the whole Global Warming is too small of a population to support a ironclad conclusion either way.

If NBC wanted to reduce cost and improve TWC, they could:
1. Get rid of Dr. Heidi Cullen. She is a blathering gas bag who has bought into the Al Gore platform while ignoring the holes in it.
2. Fire Jim Cantore. He is the William Shatner of the Weather Channel. Everything is incredibly overstated and verbose. I used to be a huge fan of his but his over the top approach has lost me.
3. Stop the garbage programming such as "When Weather Chagned History" and "It Could Happen". This is not why we watch TWC.
4. Get rid of Danny Lippman. If we want home repair tips, we'll watch "This Old House". Maybe Danny would be better with his own show on another NBC network like CNBC.
5. Get rid of difficult to listen to/watch OMCs like Nick Walker, Mike Siedel, and Alexandra Steele.
6. Reorganize the regional reporters. Send Julie Martin out to the midwest when needed. She's from Rockford, Illinois and knows the area. Any of the other OMCs can go on remote in the Atlanta area like Nicole Mitchell did yesterday.

That's a good start. Go back to what you do well. Some folks call that "Dance with the One that Brung Ya".

I was a viewer of TWC since inception but they lost me when they foolishly stopped doing what they did best- forecast the weather- and started running all those documentary programs. Every time there was bad weather and I would tune in, that's what I would find. Gave them up for another channel that shows real time radar all the time.
Dave Schwartz- seems here to be popular but I always thought his "jokes" were corny and he was sort of an odd bird. And Heidi Cullen, she needs to find a new home for her global warming hysteria-- like another poster here I remember the new ice age scare of the 70's. Climate changes should be measured in 10,000 year increments, not 10 or even 100 years. Maybe the earth is warming, but there is as much science to disprove man is at fault or can control it as there is to conclude man's activities are the cause. With NBC holding the purse strings, I think it is TWC that is the endangered species!

Posted by: mccormackma | November 28, 2008 4:24 PM | Report abuse

NBC is so-o-o-o-o out of it. CNBC, MSNBC, all horrible, now TWC will be also. I don't like TWC's new desk, huge screen and all the "standing" at the screen. It's ruined! I predict they will lose viewers just like all their other fiascos (Rosie!).
