Strong to Severe Storms Moving Through
Heavy rain and some damaging winds main threats

A line of strong thunderstorms that moved through the western suburbs, and now stretches mainly from the District toward points north and east, will advance eastward and impact areas along and east of I-95 during the next hour or so. (Another line of storms is affecting far southern and eastern portions of the area.) Hot and humid conditions are adding plenty of fuel to the storms, and the main threats look to be dangerous lightning, locally heavy rainfall, some damaging winds and possibly an isolated tornado. This line should exit the area in time for the commute home, and could be it as far as the threat of severe weather is concerned. Still, more showers and storms could form in its wake.

Really neat features on radar now. 2 outflow boundaries are colliding just east of Centreville, igniting the intensification of that cell. If they keep expanding it could drag a nice cell right trough Alexandria.

In downtown Bethesda, no rain yet but some really ominous looking clouds directly west. These clouds are really interesting to watch as they roll in! Should probably be working and not staring out the window though!

So much for that, line went from convergent to divergent in the last few frames...

@SA-Town
It's possible, but not definite, that more showers/storms could develop this evening (see our full forecast and NatCast). We'll give the NatCast an update after this line of storms moves through and we have a chance to assess the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Looks like Bethesda-Silver Spring might be getting the worst of it. It's actually still partly sunny here in Suitland, looks ugly north and west though.

It went through Bethesda pretty quickly.... Lots of lightning as it went through, but it passed swiftly.

Had a borderline severe storm in Vienna....estimated 50 MPH gusts and 1.5" of rain in 20 minutes. No classic wedge/gust front cloud, though....but some bluish-green behind the lead clouds, indicating hail.

Hoping that's it for the day. Have outdoor plans and won't be happy if they're ruined.

That's all? It was just 5 minutes of moderate-sized raindrops... not torrential or anything like that. No more winds, although the unhappy clouds are still looming around. At least I don't have to worry about walking home in the rain.
