FORECAST IN DETAIL

In the wake of the cold front which brought some scattered, gusty showers to the region yesterday, welcome the coolest air of this young fall season. Though we'll have some sunshine over the next several days, it will interact with the cold pool of air aloft, producing occasional cloud cover and even a widely scattered shower or sprinkle (mainly in the afternoon). At night, the cooler pattern should push the outer suburbs well into the 40s, which triggers the big question: do you turn your heat on yet or not!?

Today (Tuesday): Variable sun and clouds today with breezy conditions (winds from the west running about 10-20 mph, with higher gusts at times). Highs should range from the mid-60s to some low 70s. Given some instability in the atmosphere, there is a chance of a light afternoon shower yet (20%). Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly cloudy and cool with lows in the upper 40s (suburbs) to low 50s (downtown). Winds should settle down to the 5 to 10 mph range coming from the west. Confidence: Medium-High

Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend...

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A continued mixture of both clouds and sun should prevail with cool high temperatures mainly in the mid-to-upper 60s, but a few spots south and east could break into the low 70s. We still cannot rule out a slight 20% chance of a light afternoon shower. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow Night: Under partly cloudy skies, it will turn even cooler with lows dropping into the middle 40s in the outer suburbs to around 50 in the city. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday skies will likely turn mostly sunny, though a few clouds will still be around at times, especially in the afternoon. Highs should mainly be in the mid-to-upper 60s. Thursday night temperatures should drop back down into the 40s (suburbs) and low 50s (mainly in the city). Confidence: Medium

Friday should see clouds slowly increasing once again as a weekend-bound cold front approaches the area. There is a 30% chance of showers by afternoon with highs ranging from the upper 60s to the lower 70s. Clouds will bring low temperatures up Friday night, only falling into the mid-to-upper 50s. Confidence: Medium

At least half the weekend is looking like trouble once again. After last weekend's washout, it appears that Saturday could be wet again as another cold front approaches the area. Occasional showers seem likely (60% chance), with highs in the low 70s. Confidence: Low-Medium

There is a decent chance we could get the cold front through fast enough to salvage a good part of Sunday with some sunshine, though we could also be battling lingering showers. Right now, it looks like highs in the 70s, lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Low

The early look at next week suggests a cool Monday, but then warming trends on Tuesday and Wednesday (could we see a brief burst of 80s again?!).

Today's weather is very nice...but it seems the much-needed rain crowd is trying to spoil my weekend once again...I have a very important dance Friday night and a scheduled picnic in Bon Air Park Saturday. Gosh I had thought Friday was supposed to be okay; now they're trying to inject a 30% chance into it for dance time...I'm unhappy enough after that unscheduled drenching on my afternoon hike last Sunday...to add insult to injury, the Redskins were trailing the Lions 13-0 at the half and could NOT win the game! This game was one I figure they HAD to win in order to make the playoffs this season.

If this Saturday proves as nasty as last weekend, I can always stay home from the picnic. Let's have some nice seventies for much of October.

Barometric pressure here has been as low as 29.50, pretty low for a NON-TROPICAL system in September.

We hit 47.1F for the low last night and this morning it was 63.5F downstairs in the house. Some afternoon sun today will hopefully warm the indoors enough to go another night without turning on the heat.
