PM Update: Preparing for a taste of summer
Heat and humidity jump this weekend
Here we go... back to pleasant springtime weather! Of course, it may only last one or two days, depending on your definition of "pleasant" and "spring." Highs rising to around 70 and into the low 70s feel pretty mild compared to yesterday, even with some gusty breezes. Temperatures only go up in the coming few days, and at least one (if not more) of the 'H' words is likely to be uttered a few times before Sunday is over. But not yet. This evening looks like a great one.
Through Tonight: Temperatures fall back through the 60s this evening, probably near the mid-60s around sunset. Clear skies and light winds allow for a pretty solid temperature drop overnight, but we'll be warmer than recently. Lows in the mid-40s for the cold spots to the low 50s downtown.
Tomorrow (Friday): If today was not the pick of the week thus far, tomorrow will be. Morning temperatures should quickly shoot into the 70s before noon while heading for afternoon highs ranging from near 80 into the low 80s. We'll see mostly sunny skies throughout and only a modest wind from the west during the day. Humidity will also be low, before it heads toward moderate-to-uncomfortable levels this weekend.
Gulf oil spill: Oil continues to flow from the site of last week's oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. NASA satellites have caught some fascinating -- and ominous -- imagery of the spill over recent days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). A controlled burn, in which workboats separate some of the oil from the main mass with fire-resistant booms and set it alight, was scheduled for noon EDT today. Some of the oil is expected to begin reaching land tomorrow in Louisiana and during the weekend in portions of Mississippi and Alabama. Conditions that will push the oil toward the northern Gulf shore should continue into early next week (read more about NOAA's response).
