BWI Airport issued the following press release yesterday:

Last of Winter Snow Appears Ready to Finally Melt Away at BWI Marshall Airport

Snow pile behind Airport's Hourly Garage almost gone

The final trace of the record 2009-2010 winter season appears ready to finally melt away at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall). A large snow pile located behind the Hourly Garage at BWI Marshall Airport will likely completely melt this week.

Keep reading for the rest of the press release and for updates on a couple other snow piles in the region...

"This snow, still remaining here in early May, reminds all of us of the record storms this winter," said Paul J. Wiedefeld, Executive Director of BWI Marshall Airport. "I want to again acknowledge and thank the snow team employees at BWI Marshall who worked extremely long hours this winter to clear snow for Airport customers. It was a winter that none of us will soon forget."
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service report that 77 inches of snow fell at BWI Marshall Airport this past winter. The snow pile that is finally melting away this week originally appeared following the back-to-back February storms that dumped 44.5 inches of snow at the Airport. Snow was pushed off the top of the six-story Hourly Garage, resulting in a large pile.

The BWI snow pile is one of several in the region to last into at least late April. In a PM Update last week, we noted the demise of a long-standing snow pile in Charlottesville, Va. - Mt. Chipotle (officially put to rest on 4/28). Frank Roylance at blogged about a snow pile still standing in Lancaster, Pa. as of May 1. Congrats to those of you who indicated snow piles would stick around after April 15 in our poll back in mid-February.

wow. glad i caught this article. had to go all the way to bwi, huh? nothing at dulles? i saw bwi got 44" from the two storms. what did dulles get? i imagine being able to plow it off a roof into a really tall pile helped a lot.

The snow pile in Ballston at the Kettler Iceplex melted away early last month...unfortunately it also may have taken the Capitals' Stanley Cup hopes with it!

Jason, nice follow-up and conclusion to the snow pile posts.

hey, don't forget about kevinwparker's pile reported on here: which he says only melted last friday (april 30th).

i think THAT's the WASHINGTON AREA pile we should all be honoring - not baltimore's or charlottesville's or lancasters's.

I got a mention in Sunday's Post, too, though not by name:

Walked through there this afternoon and even kicked over some dirt piles. Couldn't find any snow at all. They finally opened up the back road yesterday - it had been closed since February.

I meant to keep an eye on the pile on the north side of the Strathmore parking garage but kept forgetting - I daresay it's long gone by now.
