Season's first flakes fall in many spots

By Jason Samenow
i-270snow.jpg
Snow accumulates on an overpass above I-270 north of Democracy boulevard.

12:10 p.m.: Snow is now ending in the metro region. Most spots saw no accumulation but a dusting to a coating fell from central Montgomery County to the north and west (including north Rockville, Gaithersburg, Frederick and Front Royal and Winchester in Virginia). Where the snow stuck, many instances of iciness were reported on roadways including along I-270N (from Gaithersburg to Frederick) where traffic jams were reported and I-66 west from Linden to Front Royal, which was temporarily closed due to multi-vehicle crashes.

11 a.m. update: Some snow is now pushing through the metro region. Many places are reporting light snow showers and flurries, with some heavier bursts in northwest Montgomery county around Gaithersburg and into Frederick county where up to a light coating has been reported creating some slick spots on roads. Accumulation is not expected elsewhere. All of this activity will move off to the northeast in the next hour.

Keep reading for earlier updates...

From 10 a.m.: A weak disturbance swinging by to the north is squeezing enough moisture out of the chilled air to produce some light snow showers this morning, especially west and north of the District.

Here's a statement from the National Weather Service:

...VERY LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE THIS MORNING...

A BAND OF VERY LIGHT SNOW WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION BETWEEN 9 AM AND NOON. MOST LOCATIONS WILL SEE ONLY A FEW FLAKES...BUT WITH COLD TEMPERATURES TO START OUT THE MORNING...A FEW AREAS THAT RECEIVE A FRACTION OF AN INCH COULD SEE SLICK SPOTS UNTIL TEMPERATURES RISE ABOVE FREEZING.

One of our Twitter followers (@wvaspartan) in Charles Town, WV reports: "we have a coating and boy is it coming down." We're also getting reports of flurries in Ashburn and Sterling. The snow will likely decrease in coverage and intensity as it swings east but a brief moderate burst is possible in a few spots in the metro region (again, mainly north and west of District).

Snow stopped east of Front Royal. Accumulation 7/16ths of an inch. Video here. Kind of a mild surprise as forecasts generally called for just clouds from the clipper this far south...

Nice dusting here in Leesburg! Totally caught off guard over this massive winter blast!

Posted by: greg2010 | December 10, 2010 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, it's snowing in Reston but very light...we won't see any accumulation. However, my wife is at the Leesburg outlets right now and she said the roads are snowcovered right now and it's really coming down. Stronger band moving NE...weaker band is moving straight east. Still like the flakes!

Snow accumulating in Harpers Ferry. Temps 30 on US 340, 28 on side roads. Very slick. I slid a little at a stoplight, and I have a Subaru and was crawling.

I think this counts as First Snow of the season in the Eastern Panhandle. Now that I'm safely home (I heard sirens on US 340 a few minutes ago), I can admire the decorative icing on the evergreen trees. Pretty!

I was in a meeting during this December surprise. I came back out and things were the way they were when I went in. I live in the District. This was missed. But I'm happy that everyone got a chance to enjoy! Snow never ceases to be AWESOME! :)

Hey "weather" gang.....why don't you come up with an explanation of how in DC (except for those rare occasions) when it's cold enough to snow (as it was for the past week) there is not a storm in sight (snowed in Atlanta, Charlestown, SC, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, PA, NY, ME, MA - we finally got a flake or two). Then, as soon as the temps rise into the 40s, abundant moisture arrives (usually about .50 to 1" - which equates to 5 to 10 inches of snow). Then, immediately after the rain event ends, the cold air rushes back in and as it stays cold enough for snow for days at a time, the storms stay to our North, West, East, and South????
