Welcome winter! Temps tank behind storm
A "meteogram" showing temperature (top black line; dew point bottom black line) at Dulles over the last 24 hours. The temperature dropped from 63 to 41 in two hours this morning.
On the first day of meteorological winter, a stunning cold frontal passage has abruptly ended autumn. In the course of minutes, temperatures have dropped 10-20 degrees behind the gusty showers and storms that doused the morning commute.
The 60-degree temperatures of yesterday evening and this morning are a thing of the past, as an unseasonably cold pattern now settles into the region and may last for some time.
All tornado watches have been dropped for the region but winds of 15-25 mph (with higher gusts) from the northwest will blow hard this afternoon, producing blustery wind chills in the 30s for the remainder of the day.

Got up at around 5:30 and it was 62 in Ashburn, and currently it's 39. Holy moly!

I thought there would be a post on this rapid drop in temps!
It was a balmy 62 in Alexandria around 9-9:30. An hour later, I stepped outside with only a light jacket, surprised by how raw and cold it was. It's 43 now. Tanked would definitely be the right word.

It was stunning. Was walking my dog when the wind suddenly picked up and the temperature dropped like a rock.

When I walked to the metro station in Arlington about 7:15 a. m. this morning, my umbrella was blown inside out seveal times. I finally closed it the last block and just got a little wet. I had to use both hands to kept it from getting blown away.

Let's get that SPI for Sunday up. The OCMs are talking about flurries. A start.
As for this a.m.'s temperature drop, reminded me of the temp freefall during Snoverkill. (Although that was more a 15-degree drop, rather than the 20-degree tumble this a.m.).

The temperature drop was awesome! You could feel the shift of seasons in basically the span of one hour! All meteorological dates should be like this one. It would be like the planet Genesis in Star Trek III!!!

Around 9:15 in DC I watched clouds moving very quickly from south to north collide with clouds moving just as fast from west to east. That heralded the arrival of the intense storms and then the precipitous drop in temps. Quite a dramatic morning!

Meteorological autumn got a B. Too dry at first then too much messy weather on Tuesday night dance nights.
The outlook for met winter: Some snow but not so much as last year with a 6-inch or so storm aoa Presidents' Day + more messy wintry-mix events.
