Heavy rain/sleet rapidly changing to snow

By Jason Samenow and Ian Livingston

4:00 p.m.: The transition to snow continues to spread east and flakes are beginning to fly in the city. Places that have already switched over to the west, southwest and northwest are already seeing quick accumulation. If it's not snowing in your neck of the woods, it's on its way.

3:40 p.m.: Rain has mostly transitioned to snow in places like Leesburg, Reston, Sterling and Centreville, Va. The sleet/snow line is continuing to transition east fairly quickly. There are reports of near white out conditions in heavy snow over western Loudoun County. In D.C. and points east the transition from rain to sleet is still occuring. There may be a little more sleet than anticipated, but the snow changeover appears more or less on schedule for those not seeing it yet.

1:30 p.m.: In light of the high snowfall rates expected, we have increased our snowfall prediction of 3-6" around D.C. (and just to the southeast) to 4-8". North and west of D.C. we're upping the 4-8" forecast to 5-10". Locally heavier amounts cannot be ruled out in a few areas.

The next couple of hours will be very dynamic and may vary significantly around the region before everyone changes to snow. Please comment with reports from where you live.

3:15 p.m.: Things are quickly turning wild. Heavy snow has been reported to the west in Winchester, Va. and to the southwest in Gainesville and Culpeper, Va. Much of the immediate metro area is still seeing the onset of heavy rain (east) and sleet (west) -- all ultimately transitioning to snow. Places near and west of Dulles are likely starting to see that transition now and a report of thundersnow has come in on Twitter from nearby there. As the atmosphere cools further, there may be some flips back and forth before it turns to all snow. Lots of reports of thunder are also coming in both here on CWG and elsewhere.

2:30 p.m.: Brief heavy rain changing to heavy sleet and ultimately heavy snow is now entering the area. It may be accompanied by some thunder. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a discussion covering the heavy snow (1-2"+ per hour) that will impact the area this afternoon and evening. Snow is now being reported in the band northeast of Charlottesville, so it appears the changeover should be rather quick especailly west of town.

1:30 p.m.: Reports from the southwest and radar indicate the main area of precipitation is rapidly approaching. In Charlottesville, the precipitation began as rain and is changing to sleet. Thunder has been reported in the vicinity of both Charlottesville and Fredericksburg.

As the initial band of precipitation comes in between around 2 and 3:15 p.m. (southwest to northeast), some areas (from the beltway region and south and east) may initially see heavy rain. Thunder is possible and even hail (not sleet). Then - in the period of a couple hours - rain will transition to mostly sleet and then snow. North and west of the beltway, precipitation may be mostly sleet and/or snow and will more rapidly transition to all snow.

Well, anyways, where I live, (Arlington, VA) the wind is picking up and the tempature is 2-3-4 degrees above 32. I still think we'll see sleet, then snow. it is also currently raining. :p I hate rain. I personally predict 4 hours of of 2 inches per hour, so im going with a 10-12 inch storm when all is set and done!

I am curious how fast it will come down

Judging by what the CWG says, it will be quick yet drop a LOT while here. I wonder if it may drop LESS than what is predicted

Posted by: Bious | January 26, 2011 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Bious - quickly diminishing chances that this storm will underperform from our CWG predicted amounts of 4-8" in the immediate Metro Area.

I am currently in Arlington and just came back inside. It's lightly raining, misting really. Clouds look heavy and ominous, but that might be just my projection.

Is the target of 4 p.m - 7 p.m as extremely dangerous still on?

Posted by: SA-Town | January 26, 2011 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Something big MUST be coming because the squirrels and birds in our backyard (in Rosemont, Alexandria) are acting very peculiar; frantically scampering about, binging on seed etc. It reminds me of the scene at Trader Joe's before Snowmageddon.

CWG- Wondering, how much snow will melt tomorrow?

IAD getting a very light drizzle

I cannot caution enough how quickly conditions will deteriorate this afternoon from what you see now to 1-2" of snow per hour in the timeframe of 4pm-7pm.

Posted by: Camden-CapitalWeatherGang | January 26, 2011 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Here in Alexandria/Kingstowne, it's 36 degrees and misting lightly. There's still slush in the road but driving isn't impeded. We're very near the mixing bowl, so I think that conditions are the same there.

So we're watching, and we're waiting, clickin refresh buttons anticapatin... It might start as rain but then dump snow and go away, ayyy. We're keeping our ears peeled for the sound of thunder-snow. If it doesn't start soon then to Charlettsvill I go! Is it still raining, should I go get more food? So we're watching, and we're waiting, watching, and waiting, waiting, waiting.

Thats my very sad song.

It's started in Frederick County, VA. The birds and squirrels were going wild at my feeders 30 minutes ago....now it's one lone crazy squirrel. It's coming down hard and fast!!

Can't see much of anything happening from the 12th floor in Rosslyn, but the taller buildings all appear to be wreathed in low clouds/fog. Very ominous looking, combined with this forecast.

Aggressive drizzle in Lake Ridge! Wind kicking up, temps falling - went from 36* - 34* in about 5 minutes (according to car thermometer!) Currently the roads are just wet, this AM's slush has washed away.

@busgirl1 - I'm surprised Strathmore hasn't already canceled this.

Aboveground Metro stations generally can't deal well with 8 inches of snow - but given the rate of snowfall projected, I don't think it'll take a full eight inches to make the Red Line crazy.

You may want to rethink. Lodging up in White Flint is going to be a long walk and expensive if you get stuck. ;-)

Drizzle in Alexandria, some wind. No squirrels, but the cat is clearly concerned. He's attempting to find his way into the Crockpot (and the stew) to bulk up before the storm. He's now smelling boots- perhaps trying to get a read on the ground temperatures and amounts of salting? Also, neighbors keep coming back with gasoline containers, massive amounts of artisan 7-wheat stone ground bread loaves, and what appears to be some sort of white liquid in giant cardboard cartons marked "ORGANIC" and "Free-range". Seem to be confused by the operation of their sports utility vehicles in the potential snow.

Wind is picking up here in Arlington, its gotten chilly out there. A little drizzle has started falling, and traffic is heavy here on Washington Blvd, going towards 395, as people are starting to head out early to beat the weather home. But... alas, I am sitting at my desk at work, awaiting the good word from the higher ups.

@holly6

Someone will probably beat me to it, but here it goes:

Sleet: precipitation in the form of ice pellets created by the freezing of rain as it falls

Hail: showery precipitation in the form of irregular pellets or balls of ice more than 1 / 5 in. (5 mm) in diameter, falling from a cumulonimbus cloud

Not calling it a bust, just don't think snow totals in DC area will be a big as forecasted. Looks like it will rain longer than expected & temps r still above 32 for most of the area. Just don't think there's enough cold air around to allow for a rapid changeover.
Hope I'm wrong, but after living in this area for 57 yrs, I've been thru storms like this b4, & they almost always produce less snow than predicted. I guess tomorrow we'll see who was right, though I would love 2 eat crow.

@MasonPatriot1 , we must live in the same neighborhood- my neighbors are behaving the same way with similar groceries.

No cat for weather related behavior to study, squirrels are absent as well. I did see a goldfish swimming around in his bowl gaping at me with a panicked look in his bulging eyes. Gaping, I tell you- on/off, on/off- maybe to test the barometric pressure? And his eyes! At first, I thought maybe that's just how they are, because he's a goldfish- but now I think he's displaying some sort of snow warning signal, peculiar to his species, mixed with fear.

Heavy sleet/small hail falling rather heavily in Vienna. Don't have an accurate thermometer, so I can't tell how cold it is.

What was falling 10 minutes ago here in Leesburg wasn't even sleet pellets, it was like 5 pellets and a snowflake all rolled into one; just huge chunks of ice along with lightning and thunder. I'm a weather nut, and this is a first for me! It's 50/50 snow now.

Posted by: 4seamed | January 26, 2011 3:08 PM | Report abuse

sounds like changeover to sleet and snow if occurring west of Beltway in Va. and 5+ miles west of 95. Hope it moves east quickly. Still concerned about the tight gradient between 4" or so in first 4 hours here in College Park and anticipation of an inch or less in that time as close as 20 miles from here (i.e. Upper Marlboro).

Near West Ox & Fair Oaks mall - heard the thunder not quite 10 minutes ago while outside walking the dog...
the "sleet" is almost hail like consitancy, and is rendering some spots teflon slick - I saw a dark green minivan slide downhill (70 foot drop over 350~400 feet - mildly steep) while going no more than 25 or so...
Seems like a number of companies are closing up @ 3:00 - so yeah, BE CAREFUL out there folks.

Precip started in Dumfries about 2:45. Started as rain, went to sleet, a couple thunder claps (no lightning), a few snowflakes mixed in, and back to sleet. A nice layer of ice on the ground now.

Spoke to my parents in Bristow as I was coming home. They were safe, and ready to 'hunker down'. Dad didn't believe anything was coming, but I told him to just wait. He'd see that I had good info.

Don't forget to check on older friends/family gang! Even just a phone call would do now.

Y'all be safe, and have fun in the snow!

CWG, thanks once again for putting so much time into your forecasts for our benefit. You all have been working so very hard the past few days on this storm. You were also the first ones to predict this would be a major storm as many other weather outlets were predicting a rainstorm.

You always have the forecast right from the beginning. I don't understand what the problem is with the other outlets in that it takes them so long to catch up and get the forecast RIGHT..

Anyway, let's hope for lot's of SNOW!!!

Next to nothing still here in Lake Ridge - 22192, near Woodbridge HS. It was raining pretty hard, then we got some light sleet/hail....wait...wait...just got up too look out the window...yep, we've got snow!!!!!! Coming down real fast, melting on contact. Silly me thought it had stopped because it got real quiet.

Not squirrels, but yesterday my 1st graders were "off" - they were clearly being driven by forces beyond their control. It's usually a good predictor of major weather changes, esp coastal snowstorms and hurricanes! I knew then that something big was brewing! Yesterday no one believed me when I said it was gonna snow today!

In the last 2 mins it appears that the rain/sleet has stopped and it's all snow, still melting into a slurpee-like mess on the deck though. That ought to be fun to try and shovel tomorrow after it freezes later.

Heavy sleet in Arlington. And Route 29 going south is packed with cars moving veeerrrryyyy slowly.

Not a good sign for tonight's commuters...get home safe, people!

I am now seeing approximately 18 snowflakes outside in Silver Spring. No thunder. Temp still says 35. No wildlife to comment on, or housepets. The boyfriend did just crack open a beer, so I'll take that as a sign that the storm has begun ;)

It's been sleeting for the past hour. Now all big fat snowflakes in Chevy Chase MD. Kruz and Thinkspring notoriously silent.

I'll "Thinkspring" when I'm damn well good and done with winter. Right now this is just awesome!

As mentioned by another poster , it is currently sleeting in Silver Spring. Will the sleet cut on down on the original amount of snow predicted for the District and immediate points, like Montgomery County?

Thank you CWG for the accurate job you did with predicting that this storm would be more rain than snow for the Washington area.

Swirling, thick snow plastering everything here in Manassas! Kids and the dog running around in pure bliss!

What will happen to the inch or two of thick slush underneath the snow overnight? Pure ice by tomorrow?

Posted by: homeschool4joy | January 26, 2011 3:58 PM | Report abuse

DC Convention Center - first band of heavy sleet accumulating near 1/4" - though mixed with rain and clear as ice.

Two observations:
1 hawk in a tree eating a small bird just before the sleet started
and
1 dope biking home after the sleet started.

Conclusion:
The average hawk is smarter than your average DC bike commuter.

Just stepped outside again in Arlington. What was a slushy mix, akin to those soda flavored ice drinks in gas stations, has now changed over to largely snow and slush combined. As of 4:15PM, this is what it looked like in Arlington VA, near the Village at Shirlington: http://goo.gl/XcXAD and http://goo.gl/i6JXa

I live in South NJ (born and raised) but I signed up on here a few days ago after reading articles and comments for about a week about this storm. I love the excitement and very detailed weather posts. We definitely need more of this type of in-depth analysis. But anyway, I can't wait until the snow arrive in NJ...it's raining here now but it's colder here than it is in DC (33-34 degrees all afternoon)...kind of crazy how this whole thing is unfolding.

Its been snowing pretty steadily in mclean for at least half hour or so.
I was just outside, surprised at how heavy the snow feels when it falls on you.

Very curious if CWG is still sticking with their earlier accumulation predictions.

Complete white-out in Philomont, western Loudoun. Visibility less than 100 feet. High winds, snow is going in every direction, driven like a sandstorm.

CWG, Thank you! You called it perfectly. I left work even earlier than I had planned because of your updates. I'm home safe looking out on near whiteout conditions in Oakton.

Camden - we had heavy sleet, with several rounds of thunder, here in Springfield between about 3:15 and 3:45. In that timespan, temps dropped from about 36 to 34, and continue to do so. It's ALL snow now, steady & heavy, laying VERY quickly on all surfaces.

Posted by: ToBeBlunt | January 26, 2011 4:22 PM | Report abuse

While the snow is pretty and all, please remember some people have a very hard time in this kind of weather. If you have a four wheel drive vehicle and the time to help, please consider calling your local hospital or church and see if you can lend a hand with transporting people who need help getting around.

Here in Old Town a little more lightning and thunder and now it switched to VERY HEAVY snow in a flash. Literally it took like 30 seconds to switch! About 1/4" of snow now in the last 15 minutes. Its snowing almost as hard as it did during the blizzards last winter.

Posted by: jdtdc | January 26, 2011 4:35 PM | Report abuse

@djm-01, I've been teleworking all day and flipping back and forth between the work at hand and the always-excellent CWG site.

BTW, it's only been formally snowing about 45 minutes in the Springfield/Franconia area (by my personal observation and where I'm located), but it is laying VERY quickly, and I'm noticing that vehicles are taking it slower and slower. I think it's piling up and getting slippery quickly.

And seriously - I feel for those who hate snow and cold and who have HAD it after last winter. But for those of you who are might be home to observe and enjoy it, is there nothing prettier than falling snow in the waning light of the day? We Washingtonians so rarely get to enjoy this sight, but I'm reveling in it late this afternoon...just gorgeous.

Sue Palka from fox just said this should end @ 12 to 1am. Right now, reports of 1" to 2" of snow is common. With the thundersnow, she said expect upto 2" per hour. She quoted to do the math at 1 to 2" per hour for 6-8 hours and that should be our accum. They have a "special report" on fox right now confirming that Winchester has 3" on the ground as we speak and it is moving from west to east. She seems pretty sure it will last till midnight for Loudoun and western Fairfax counties. Accum amounts are now 8-10 inches with isolated amounts of 10-12 inches. Only 2-4 inches for PG county and areas south and east of that. D.C seems to be the HUGE "line" that divides 1-4" from 8-12". The report just went to commercial. Since I live in the very west part of Fairfax County and am less than 4 miles from Loudoun county, I will start taking measurements in 30 minutes or so. It is whiteout conditions right now here. Fox also said "all the pre treated areas were washed away from the rain earlier and basically there is no sand or salt preventing the snow from sticking".

We lose power in our neighborhood each and every time there is the slightest bit of bad weather. BGE had agreed last year to move our power for the laurel grid to the bowie grid, but that seems to have been an empty promise. What is BGE going to do to increase the reliability of our power. There is no reason on earth that in this day and age we should have to do without power every winter when it snows. We are sick and tired of being left to freeze in the dark every single year.
