Weather image of the day: Last snow pile of 2011?

By Jason Samenow

The demise of a snow pile in Reston, Va. Wednesday. By CWG photographer Kevin Ambrose.

Hopefully, this is among the least aesthetically pleasing images of the day we post. Capital Weather Gang photographer Kevin Ambrose spotted the nasty remains of a snow pile in Reston (shown above) on Wednesday and captured it for the record.

He reminded me that the last year the western suburbs still had solid snow cover from Snowmageddon and Snoverkill at this time. And you may recall massive snow piles near BWI didn't melt until early May. So this year we're at least two months ahead in ridding ourselves of the unsightly heaps of soiled snow.

(That's, of course, assuming we don't get a freak late season snowstorm.)

Just kidding. That is snow WAY past it's expiration date.

Oh there's still some snow piles around, especially in shopping center and other big parking lots.

Still some useful moisture in those fugly snowpiles.

really?! i think they're all gone around here. take pictures. last year kevin "last pile" parker had the longest-lasting pile in his work parking lot.

the funny thing about your picture is that could be from 12" or 12,0000' up. how big was that pile to start with?

Really? Jason "Samesnow" used the word "freak" in the same sentence with snowstorm? That bad karma explains the snow holes of the entire winter.

there's still quite a large pile of snow on the north side of the parking garage at the suitland metro station.

pictures. send pictures. i think that given how little snow fell, well over a month ago, and that we had 3 or 4 days in the 70s since then, it's pretty amazing there are still piles of snow. CWG needs to have a last pile contest.

Yep, just left Mid Pike Plaza on 355 & there was a pretty big, but melting, pile of snow there. At least I think it was snow, it wasn't snow colored anymore, it was sorta greyish with bits of white here & there so it may have been a gravel pile, but then gravel piles don't have streams of water running out of them.

WOW! I'm in Reston, and I can't find the snow! Please give me the coordinates :-D

@walter-in-fallschurch: The snow pile was originally 6' tall.

@TheAnalyst: It's near Sunrise Valley Drive, in a business park shaded by trees. It's still taking up a parking spot. :)

I was shopping at the Target in Seven Corners, VA late this morning and saw a pile of snow in the back of the lot that was still about 5 feet tall taking up several spaces. Who knows how big it was a few weeks ago.

There's a large pile of dirty snow still persisting at the back of the Wegmans parking lot in Leesburg. It's big enough that the section of the lot is blocked off.

In federal plaza in Rockville Maryland there is still a snow pile 4 feet tall in the middle and another one the same height on the side but about 20 feet long.

I think it's safe to say that any remaining snow piles have melted by now with all this rain.
