Mardi Gras storm risk & the new tornado alley
While Mardi Gras revelers get their buzz tonight in New Orleans, forecasters are buzzing about the severe thunderstorm risk encompassing Louisiana and surrounding states in the Deep South. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center says these areas, including the Big Easy, stand a slight to moderate risk of dangerous storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.

Active U.S. spring severe weather season likely
The predictions of several independent long-range forecast outlets support a very busy severe weather season across the middle portion of the U.S. from east of the Rockies to near the East Coast.

Tornado watch dropped for metro region
Due to the potential for severe thunderstorms which may produce a few tornadoes in the region, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch through 4 p.m. for regions southeast of the District. The watch which had been in effect for D.C. and western suburbs was canceled.

Strong front, some severe storms racing by
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm watch for all but the western suburbs through 4 p.m. The best chance of severe activity is mainly east of I-95 early to mid afternoon. Damaging wind gusts to 50-60 mph are possible in storms.

Flooding, thunderstorm risk for Wed. a.m. rush
The timing of the big, bad cold front to huff and puff and blow through the region tomorrow could not be worse. At the moment, the frontal passage looks to occur between 5-10 a.m. from west to east across the metro region.

Tornado touched down in Baltimore Tues. night
The National Weather Service in Sterling has confirmed a tornado carved a 0.4 mile path through in northeast Baltimore (Hamilton) and Parkville in Baltimore County Tuesday night (or early Wednesday morning). The twister, linked to three minor injuries, grew to a maximum width of 250 yards wide and packed peak winds of around 100 mph. The storm was classified as category one on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) tornado scale, which ranges from zero to five.
