Capital Weather Gang Archive: Updates
High wind warning from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday
The wind advisory - which had been issue for tomorrow - between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. remains in effect between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.. However, for the period between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., the wind advisory has been upgraded to a high wind warning. A high wind warning is basically a wind advisory on steroids. Whereas a wind advisory indicates the potential for wind gusts over 45 mph, a high wind warning means wind gusts of over 58 mph are possible.

Sleet & snow to leave icy mess for AM commute
Snow amounts will probably be at the lower end of ranges forecast earlier, mainly from 1-3" in the immediate metro area. Irrespective of total snow amounts, temperatures continue to fall and will bottom out from 20-24 degrees. So everything will still freeze and it will be an icy mess in the morning - especially on untreated roads.

Wind advisory through midnight
The high wind warning has been discontinued, but a wind advisory (a less extreme classification) is in effect through 12:00 a.m. Sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50-55 mph are possible before winds slowly abate later tonight. The red flag (fire weather) warning has been allowed to expire.

Temps spike to 70, warmest day since Oct. 28
Here's a little something to warm your heart on Valentine's Day: Reagan National has reached at least 68 degrees today (eight degrees above our initial forecast, big whoops), making it the warmest day since November 23, when it hit 69. The record for the date is 73 from 1990.

Update on upcoming wintry weather chances
It's been a raw, dreary and sometimes drizzly day out there, but with nothing in the way of frozen precipitation. Might that change? Well, we're tracking three opportunities for wintry weather over the next several days, though none are close to a sure thing as of yet.

Three possible storms: will any pack a punch?
Even if the winter of 2010-2011 hasn't delivered a knockout blow like Snowmageddon of a year ago, we've had plenty of action of track. The next six days present three opportunities for winter weather punches of varying force. In terms of snow, Saturday's potential is anemic, like a feather to your face, if even existent. Then a weather system Monday night could produce a lightweight hit. Thursday's snow punch - which may be followed by the fiercest Arctic blast of the season - could be the heavyweight. On the other hand, it's farthest away and could whiff or get washed out.
