Eaten by Aedes: The buzz on summer mosquitoes
Let's face it. Mosquitoes in the DC area have been voracious this summer. Their prolific populations have left us grabbing for the nearest can of DEET. Is it the heat? Severe thunderstorms? Drought? How have we coped ...or have we?

What do you like about summer heat?
The D.C. area has already experienced its fair share of summer conditions ... and it's only the first week of July. We've heard -- and said -- plenty of complaints about the heat and humidity: sweaty work clothes, lack of energy, moldy basements. Yet, some residents actually seem to like the heat. Kids' solutions to air pollution
When it comes to inspiring solutions to air pollution, we adults could learn a thing or two from kids. Clean Air Partners, a regional nonprofit partnership that advocates and educates for cleaner air in the D.C.-Baltimore area, recently announced the winners of its annual student poster contest. According to Rebecca Davis, education program manager for the partnership, "the purpose of the poster contest was to educate students about the solution to air pollution and climate change by integrating science and art," in addition to celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

The pollen, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The single biggest complaint I've heard about this week's weather is neither the above-normal heat, nor the crowds of tourists ... It's allergies. Tree pollen has been the main culprit.
