The Craig Fiasco: Three Up, Three Down

Day 12 of the Senate held hostage. The Larry Craig saga simply won't go away.

Indeed, we're now 12 days into the Idaho Republican's free-fall from grace. Off in the horizon, there appears to be a glimmer of hope that this political drama will draw to a conclusion, mainly because of Craig's self-imposed Sept. 30 deadline for trying to get his guilty plea overturned in the Hennepin County District Court in the Twin Cities area. The scandal has put the GOP once again on the defensive, humiliated Craig's family and left Craig's reputation seemingly beyond repair. A few have actually benefited politically from the scandal fallout, while others have seen their stock plummet as a result of it.

It's time for another edition of Capitol Briefing's three up, three down, a look at which characters have performed the best and worst under pressure. (Oh, for the sake of this week's edition, we're simply setting Craig himself aside into his own category as, hands down, the biggest loser in this saga.)

THREE UP:

• Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska): Although she has been in the Senate less than five years, Murkowski has vaulted all the way up to No. 2 in seniority among Republicans on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. That's the panel that her father, former Gov. Frank Murkowski, chaired while he was senator. But it took her father 14 years before he could grab the gavel of what is the most important committee to Alaska, given its jurisdiction over the oil and natural gas industry. With the death of Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) this summer and Larry Craig's pending resignation, she's waiting in the wings to become the top Republican. Only Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) is ahead of her. Domenici is 75 years old and has been caught up in the controversy over the firing of U.S. attorneys. Even if Domenici decides to seek another term next year, it's easy to envision Murkowski becoming the top Republican on the committee within the next four years or so.
• Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.): Longtime allies, Lott and Craig were part of the up-and-comers in the early 1990s who pushed their way to the top leadership positions. In the last 12 days, the minority whip has walked a fine line between loyalty to his friend Craig and loyalty to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). His public statements were critical of Craig's behavior but also cautionary missives toward anyone rushing to judgment. Lott joined leadership in calling for an Ethics Committee investigation and stripping Craig of his senior committee posts, but, notably, there was never an official unified leadership call for his resignation. Capitol Briefing suspects such a resignation call would have been a bridge too far for Lott, who played a very difficult situation as solidly as possible.
• David Karsnia: Who? He's the undercover officer - a sergeant in the Metropolitan Airports Commission Police Department -- who busted Craig in the gay-sex sting operation. Back in 2006, according to a report on WCCO, a Twin Cities TV station, Karsnia was working the all important assignment of cracking down on travelers for "road rage" with their airport luggage carts. By the summer of 2007, Karsnia was working undercover vice - and saw himself and a recording of his voice played non-stop on cable TV and the internet for days last week, lecturing Craig and the world about why politicians were taking the world "down the tubes."

THREE DOWN

• John Ensign (R-Nev.): The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee just can't catch a break. Craig had a mortal lock on re-election before the revelation that he had been arrested in the airport men's room. Granted, Idaho is a strong Republican state and Craig's replacement should hold the seat, but it introduces another element of uncertainty for the Republicans into an already difficult election cycle and has given the Democrats the upper hand in arguing over which party better reflects family values.
• Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.): Schumer, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Committee, is a partial loser, because of the timing of the scandal. The disclosure of Craig's arrest, coming extremely early in the congressional election cycle, is just one more indication of how things will be different in 2008 than in 2006, when everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Republicans. Had this been 2006 and Craig was running for re-election, the electoral gods probably would have timed his arrest for October, just before the election, likely handing the seat to Democrats. Now, the GOP replacement likely has a year to shore himself or herself up.
• Green Bay Packers fans: OK, I've run out of losers for the Craig fiasco. So here's to the Philadelphia Eagles, who will get off to a great start this Sunday by stomping the Packers on the not-quite frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Prediction: 31-17.

Larry Craig a closeted homosexual..... Good for the Republican party, they need more doves less hawks!
Do you believe he's being punished by the republican party for being a homosexual or for admitting to lewd behavior ------------------> http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=440

How peculiar: three up, three down, but no mention of Mitt Romney, whose Idaho campaign Craig was heading.

I hope this goes on and on and on. To see the repubs twisting and turning in the wind is a delight Just keep it on the front burner so that the voters see what they elected to represent them-oh these men with feet of clay!!

In a simple experiment reported todayin the journal Nature Neuroscience, scientists at New York University and UCLA show that political orientation is related to differences in how the brain processes information.

Previous psychological studies have found that conservatives tend to be more structured and persistent in their judgments whereas liberals are more open to new experiences. The latest study found those traits are not confined to political situations but also influence everyday decisions.

The results show "there are two cognitive styles -- a liberal style and a conservative style," said UCLA neurologist Dr. Marco Iacoboni, who was not connected to the latest research.

Analyzing the data, Sulloway said liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts, and 2.2 times as likely to score in the top half of the distribution for accuracy.

Based on the results, he said, liberals could be expected to more readily accept new social, scientific or religious ideas.

"There is ample data from the history of science showing that social and political liberals indeed do tend to support major revolutions in science," said Sulloway, who has written about the history of science and has studied behavioral differences between conservatives and liberals.

Perhaps it would not be inappropriate to edit your post & replace the pack fans with yourself, given the outcome of that particular competition.

It's the bottom of the ninth ... Craig is at bat ... Today he's an 0-fer ... no runs no hits, 2 errors in the field ... The count is 0 balls and two strikes, and Craig's team is down 17-0 ... Craig has hit into 2 double plays, one while attempting a sacrifice bunt and the other while watching a called third strike on a hit and run.

So maybe Senator (soon to be Ex-Senator) Craig doesn't identify as a gay man. Lots of men who have sex with other men do not identify as gay. And in fact, those of us who DO identify as gay don't want or need those hypocrites as a part of the gay community either. Cruising public toilets for sex with other men, while systematically rejecting every call for recognition of human rights for same sex attracted people is hypocritical. Some of the most virulent anti-gay bigots, Roy Cohen, J Edgar Hoover, Foley, and others had their own affairs while condemning others ... Be gone, bigot ... be gone permanently and completely.

Conservatives Urge Congress To Help Iraqis Who Aid U.S.

A group of prominent conservatives led by David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union and Ed Meese, Ronald Reagan's attorney general, has written all members of the Senate urging them to support legislation aimed at providing resettlement for those Iraqis who help U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq.

It's a shame that this whole scandal has erupted into another issue about homophobia and lgbt rights. When will people grow up and accept the difference in others? Why can't we disregard the sexuality of the problem and just stick to the real facts that are important.

Dear Paul Kane:

P.A.T.C.H.E.S. is concerned about the perceived decline in hypocrisy on Capitol Hill. We use the term "perceived" advisedly, because we don't think that bold American hypocrisy is really falling off. It's our assessment that many Americans are simply too busy to take time to remember and honor the hypocrites -- history-making leaders and ordinary folks -- who have made our country what it is today.

In times of crisis, we tend to harken back to our core values. Well, Paul Kane, this is such a time! In just a few of the Dog Days of August, Sen. Larry Craig was hounded from office, first by the news media, then the presidential candidates, and finally his fellow Senators. For what? For tapping his foot in a public men's room!

We think there is also a palpable element of racism in these charges emanating from a small newspaper in Idaho (where disgraced LAPD Detective Mark Fuhrman fled after his conviction for perjury about his racism in the O.J. Simpson trial). True, foot-tapping may have been popularized by American Blacks. But the practice is widespread, and includes such lilly-white icons as "The Singing Senators."

If Craig's undoing is allowed to stand, the Muzak wherever members of Congress relieve themselves better be softened, or we may soon find it hard to raise a quorum! DC is justifiably proud of its history in providing a forum for great practitioners of America's most significant native art form -- Jazz, and of the contributions made by greats who were DC residents like Duke Ellington and be-bop founder Dizzy Gillespie. The links between jazz -- especially bebop -- and foot-tapping are too obvious.

We also see this as an assault upon old-fashioned 4th of July martial music. Think of the peril in public restrooms on Capitol Hill, where DC native John Phillip Sousa, Leader of the U.S. Marine Corps Band and popularly known as "The March King," wrote musical marches that set thousands of feet to tapping!
Fortunately, a team of top lawyers from P.A.T.C.H.E.S. has prevailed upon Sen. Craig to reconsider his hasty decision to bow to the inevitable and give up his Senate seat. Our crack lawyers (no pun intended) were prepared to argue that there's nothing illegal about propositioning a vice squad cop in a men's room, especially a vice squad cop who seems interested and looks kinda cute! Sen. Craig was reluctant to go with that line of argument, but we came up with one he couldn't resist. We simply reminded him of the Constitutional stricture, in Article I, Section 6, Clause 1, providing that members of Congress ". . . shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."

Well, Sen. Larry Craig was on his way to vote in Congress from his home in Idaho, so his arrest was illegal!

Protect America's Top Congressional Hypocrites, Especially Senators, salutes Sen. Craig for his belated courage.

As this battle goes forward, P.A.T.C.H.E.S. is also fighting on another front, to defend Sen. David Vitter, who is being unfairly villified. But more about that in a future missive.

If you're willing to help, to spread the word and pass the hat, P.A.T.C.H.E.S. would like to hear from you.

Yours in America,

P.S. Thought you might appreciate these lyrics from an old American standard:

Fly's in the buttermilk, two by two
Fly's in the buttermilk, shoo fly shoo
Fly's in the buttermilk, skip to my loo
Skip to my loo my darlin'

Sing me, (si-ing me)
Sing me an old fashioned song (sing me an old fashioned song)
Bri-ing me (bri-ing me), back in my mind
To a time where my memories all come from

A good timin' song, a song that makes you wanna sing along
A good old fashioned, hand-clappin, knee-slappin, foot-tappin' song

When I was young I used to wait upon my master and bring his plate
Pass the bottle when his was dry, Shoo away the blue tail fly

Jimmy crack corn and I don't care, Jimmy crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy crack corn and I don't care, my master's gone away

Sing me, (si-ing me)
Sing me an old fashioned song (sing me an old fashioned song)
Bri-ing me (bri-ing me), back in my mind
To a time where my memories all come from

A good timin' song, a song that makes you wanna sing alo-o-ong
A good old fashioned, hand-clappin, knee-slappin, foot-tappin' song

Fly's in the buttermilk, skip to my loo
Skip to my loo my darlin'.
