On the Hill, a Presidential Campaign Preview

In advance of what is expected to be the legacy-burnishing exercise of President Bush's final State of the Union address next Monday, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.) today offered a preview of the Democrats' counter-message.

The gist of that message, illustrated by a chart full of pretty colors, is that the country is worse off in a variety of ways than it was when Bush took office seven years ago.

The chart is worth checking out, not as a standard Congressional press release or even as an SOTU pre-buttal, but as a preview of the message you can expect the eventual Democratic presidential nominee to repeat until we all have these statistics memorized.

You'll hear Democrats make some variation of this case over and over on the House and Senate floors, at the Democratic National Convention in Denver and probably at some general election debates. Republicans will surely rebut these numbers with some of their own, but the GOP presidential nominee will face a difficult choice --either marshal some facts to show that the country is actually better off now, or run away from Bush and his low approval ratings by promising change.

Most likely, the Republican candidate will try to do both at the same time. Should be interesting to watch.

Yep, the Democrats run the country well for a few years and build up a surplus, then the Repubs steal an election and spend it all on tax cuts for the rich and worthless wars.

I am 75 years old and I have seen presidents come and go since Franklin D Roosevelt. Geprge W. Bush is the worst president in U.S. history. Every thing he has touched has turned to S... ushi. His cabinet appointments, his appointment of the Unitned Nations representative, his supreme court appointments, his director of FEMA etc. He has done more harm to our country in seven years than most could do in fifty years!!!!
