Pelosi Deflects VP Question; Dishes on Superdelegates

If Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) defeats the most viable female candidate in American history and wins the Democratic presidential nomination, might he want to balance the ticket by selecting another woman for Vice President? Perhaps someone who's already the highest-ranking woman ever in the line of presidential succession?

Well, too bad. Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) not interested.

Following up a question during her weekly press conference today about Obama considering potential vice presidential candidates, a reporter queried: "If asked, would you serve?"

"Being Speaker of the House is the best job in the world. Why would I want to be number two?" Pelosi responded, grinning widely.

While she was on the subject of the Democratic nomination fight, Pelosi reiterated her longstanding philosophical opposition to the very existence of superdelegates. Pelosi reminded that she had run for Democratic party chair 25 years ago as a staunch opponent of superdelegates. ("You can imagine what a winning platform that was," she said with a laugh.) But she also suggested that there might be a compromise available short of abolishing them altogether.

"If there's some way to have some sort of, say, ex officio delegates, and some elected leaders of the state parties ... there should be some, but it shouldn't be 700... 800 people," Pelosi said.

As chairwoman of this year's Democratic National Convention, Pelosi will have a big say on such matters. Maybe that's why she doesn't want to be on the presidential ticket.

I hope that whoever gets in she is gone. She is all about her. She got in and has done nothing to help women and we know that she is out there promoting Obama.

Worth noting that yesterday on PBS's Newshour Pelosi said she did not expect a "dream team" ticket of Obama and Clinton--good stuff if you ask me, it wouldn't be a good idea for a variety of reasons (not the least of which being the thought of the Clintons playing second fiddle).

Pelosi is a power grabber just like her good ol boy comrads in the liberal power center of the party (Kennedy, Kerry, etc.) and has done as much as anyone to keep Hillary from getting the nomination. We Clinton supporters here in California will not forget that when she comes up for reelection.

You Clintonians are a pathetic bunch. A month ago Nancy was Billarys staunch supporter. Now that they are losing, you're blaming her, the media and everyone else for her loss. Hillary lost when she stopped being a lady and acted like a dirty Republican. OK so it backfired and when she's done blaming the pots and the kitchen sink, she'll be left with the man in the mirror, herself.
The American people are not stupid and all her transparent antics to divide then conquer in 2012, will not work. Be a good sport Lady and leave the stage. The show is over.

It is demeaning to me as a woman to watch Hillary claw and squirm and slide in the White House on her belly. She absolutely does not know what she will do if she is not in Washington and that terrifies her. I am embarrassed. I have supported and defended her and her husband for years. A person's character is truly defined when their backs are against the wall. She is nasty and will do anything! Our daughters are watching. This is not a pretty picture!

I hope Pelosi gets beaten in the next election. As a woman, she is an embarrassment. When she became speaker, she congratulated herself for breaking the highest glass ceiling in the country. Her implied support for Obama was a testament to her insecurity of becoming the #2 most powerful woman in the country. If Obama was highly qualified and experienced, she could be excused. But let's face it--he's not!!! Most people have recognized her jealousy and insecurity.

What a bunch of whiners!

Hillary has lost and now we have to find someone to blame. Could it be that Hillary just didn't get enough people to vote for her?

Posted by: vagaf31 | May 23, 2008 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Wow....what does it take to satisfy you ladies? A woman gets the highest position in the Senate and rather than support her you complain. Do you really know what it takes to be in her position?
Easy to sit on the sidelines and throw rocks. You should be supporting her, just like you support Hillary, who IMO has a lot more to say for herself for the campaign she's waging. I was all for her getting the nomination until she started dealing in dirty politics because she and Bill want to get back in so bad. Be honest with yourselves, you know this is true. Your problem is that you want it your way, whether she's right or wrong, which by the way, if she got the job, you'd desert her the same way you do Pelosi.
If Obama is so bad for you then vote for 4 more years of Bush with McCain, and you know the fix you're in now because of that vote.

As a woman and a Democrat, I think Nancy Pelosi is a phony and an embarrassment to women and Democrats everywhere.

i hope that the caucus system will be done away with ...esp in iowa where we know it is just a means to get millions of dollars from all the candidates into the state. i will be voting for hillary as a write in if she isn't the one on the ballot. why isn't the media talking about how dirty obama/rezko is? why don't we have any real investigative reporters anymore? obama is so dirty!!!!!!! he has lied about so many things...............i hope the stuff that the republicans are waiting to use on him will be discovered by the delegates before he is nominated as the candidate.

It makes sense now that Bill Clinton is really trying to get Hillary the VP nomination in back room negotiations, given some of the above responses. The Clinton's appear desperate to stay in power, particulary given that Hillary's senate seat may also be in jeopardy.

Posted by: girling | May 23, 2008 11:36 AM | Report abuse

Ok...m rohr...where do you get your information from regarding Obama being dirty? Or is that another one of your 'opinions' with no validity?
It's time you voters looked at the facts on ALL of the candidates, rather than reading and believing what you want to believe.
It doesn't matter what candidate you choose, that's your choice, but be sure you make the choice you can live with in the next four years. This time the vote you make is important, because the administration we have now have put us in DEEP S**t, and it will take us years to get out of it.

Posted by: REG | May 23, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

How can we still be exploring a Hillary possibility? She has lost. It is embarssing when presented with a candidate that has redesigned the way we think of politics and ourselves, and by the way, who had everything against him (except the people)we cannot come together as a party and support him.

This whole Hillary support group is exactly the white female privileged mentality a lot of people in this country want to pretend does not exist.

Despite the crooked deals, dead staff members, etc. You actually think she deserves to be elected and go down in history as the first female president.

As a woman and a now Obama supporter (after I took some time to get the facts), I cannot in good faith believe she is the best our gender has to offer.

Leave Pelosi alone, read a minute or two and recognize a vote for Hillary is not the same thing as a vote for you. She wants this because she believes it is owed to her.

What is the matter with you women? Arent you smart enough to see that Hillary and Bill will do just about anything to get back in the White House.....are you actually stupid enough to believe everything they are saying. If you ask me, the Clintons are the ones that are doing the "manipulating" and "brainwashing"....no person in their right mind would be stupid enough to believe them. You all have major issues and problems....face up to the fact that Obama WILL BE THE NOMINEE and he WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT. There is absolutely nothng you can do to stop it....so quit crying spilled milke and quit the whining and making excuses for Clinton losing. This was a fair race and "no one stole it from anyone".....she lost it fair and square. So get over it....and move on. Vote for McCain if you want...it really wont make any difference.

How can anyone like the Clintons. People said on another article than Nancy Pelosi thinks she is superior. These were bitter Clinton supporters who were mad at Pelosi for changing her support from Clinton to Obama, actually rather late in the game.

The Clinton's have to be the most classless act I have seen in upper-level American politics ever. Their attitude since and even during Bill's term is that everyone, the public, the other Congress members, exist to serve them, and worship them like British Monarchs in the 15th century before the major Magna Carta, which gave people basic few basic rights not controlled by the Royal Family, which Hillary wants.

I've never seen two more arrogant people in higher politics in my lifetime. She lost because she stands for anything popular at the moment, like Iraq, flip-flop, changes views weekly depending on polls. Bill did the same thing and pretty much politically castrated himself with this technique. Stand for anything for the moment but ultimately nothing except your stupid opinion polls at the moment which were taken virtually daily by Dick Morris and his politcal advisors. No vision, no real philosphy of how to govern, no real proposals other than Hillary's healthcare plan which was devised by a commitee more secretive than a top secret Pentagon prgram, with no advice from the healthcare providers, Congress or public, just ram it through, make everyone government employees so YOU have total control over something which you know nothing about, like everything else, and then try to put the broken mess back together with actually nobody but your little subversive club. Just ram it down everyone's throat's without questions. Well, it didn't fly.
Hopefully, the public are understandably sick and tired of lies and political games that are nothing but more sophisticated lies. Manipulators. Some people I guess just need to believe in something, but I wouldn't look inside the Washington Beltway for it. The Clintons are about the lowest form. Power, anyway and you can get it. Rejection is hard to take for most people, but the Clinton's get real vindictive about it. Hillary was well known to keep enemies lists ala Richard Nixon and she is obviously one who always digs in her heels. Sometimes this is necessary but its a good way to accomplish nothing. The US government is based on shared power, although the spineless Congress seems to be afraid to do anything substantial. We'll just do nothing so we can blame everything on Bush. Sorry Hill, you are not owed the presidency and I certainly can't see why Bill thinks the same way. Neither of you are or ever were all that popular depsite your high opinions of yourself. You got lost in the worshipping fans, much like child media stars and some young athletes. She's so tough? Well If she so tough I suggest a tour of duty in Afghanistan, which virtually all of Congress supports unlikr Iraq. So, yea here's a uniform, here's a weapon, you're on patrol. I might then consider you tough, not for putting up with a suddenly nonworshipping new media. They found someone more marketable. Too bad. Have some dignity. Disappear for a good while. Neither you or Bill have the slightest notion of what dignity is apparently.

Isn't Nancy the one who took "impeachment off the table"? Isn't impeachment part of our Constitution? By not even considering impeachment in regards to the current president and vice-president was cowardly and bordering on criminal. If she would ever appear on the ticket with Obama, I would ask for a refund of my donation and demand an apology. Matter of fact, she should resign and head back to California.

Posted by: Dave, Allentown,PA | May 23, 2008 1:52 PM | Report abuse

KRitt from WA: The media NEVER worshipped the Clintons. All they ever said, when Hillary was ahead by a large margin, was just that.

Obama is the one whom they fawn over.

Hillary Clinton is an incredibly strong woman to put up with all the attacks. She is often referred to as a lightning rod. What does a lightning rod do? It is placed on top a house and /or barn to protect those within by taking negative destructive energy and directing it safely into the ground.

I am a 60 year old woman of mixed ethnicity. Every time I read
baseless and vitriolic attacks against Hillary it only strengthens my resolve to support her. ESPECIALLY against the god awful
arrogant child (just like Bush) that is Obama.
I hope she takes the fight to the convention. I hope she remains
in his path, I will gladly stand in his path as well.
We don't need another narcissistic megalomaniac like Obama
in the White House.

They are all just like her....if they dont get "their own way" they act out and pitch their little temper tantrums....and the vulgar language and temperament they have show they are "true Hillary supporters"...all their Hormones" are "out-of-whack"....all just little "Hillaries". Grow up ladies.....why are you all so "hateful and hostile"?? Is it "your time of the month"? ? ? Take a pill..

patronizing. Not gonna work.

I wish the American people will see threw the Sun Screen the Clintons have cast in this primary election. They will stop at nothing to get her elected even if it means burning down the house. I just wonder how long the Black high profile dem will stand on the sidelines while she demeans Barack each and everyday. Stephnie Tubs Jones, Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters.........How can you ladies live with yourselfs? I truly hope the voters in your districts hold you accountable in your next election bid. This race is over except for Tanya Harding tactic.
