The Senate: Root of All Evil?

The U.S. Senate has long been known as the "cooling saucer," where legislation can get a nice, slow round of consideration after the hot-tempered House has sped through a bill. That dynamic has long frustrated House members, but perhaps never so much as it did Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) today.

Pelosi was asked at her weekly press conference about Democrats' inability to end the Iraq war and whether that represents a "failure" for her and the party. The Speaker responded that it wasn't a failure at all, since the House had passed numerous bills attempting to shorten or end the war. But they'd all been snagged by the Senate and its "arcane" rule requiring 60 votes to end debate.

"The 60-vote requirement to bring up legislation in the Senate has prolonged this war, has deepened the downturn in the economy of this country, has made matters worse for more families in this country, and it's a tragedy," Pelosi said.

Wow. So does Pelosi advocate a wholesale change in the Senate's rules? No, she just wants more Democrats elected to the chamber. Democrats would need to pick up nine seats in November to reach the magic number of 60, a very tall order even in a year trending so badly for the GOP. Or, of course, the majority could try a little harder to persuade Republicans to vote with them.

Otherwise, Pelosi and her fellow House Democrats will have to rail against those pesky Senate rules for at least another two years. Tragic.

well this is typical Pelosi blame someone else.Who is it that blocks impeachment?
The fact of the matter is Pelosi does not want the war to end anymore than bush does.
Anymore than with the exception of a handfull our elected officals do.Until the people of this country wakeup and realise they own the government the government does not own them they'll vote these corporate shills into power and suffer for it.

Pelosi has no such impediment in the House, yet she has let the Democrats knuckle under to FISA travesty today. Why is no one asking her about this?

Tragic? It IS tragic, but apparently the sentiment is valid only for those of us with a vested PERSONAL interest in ending the war.

Ben - how cold you sound.

I guess we are just going to have to except the fact that our people in congress are not going to do what is right. Money doesn't talk, it shouts. Wave a lot of money in the air and out goes common sense. Protect the rich and to hell with anyone else.

McLean, Virginia -- POOR Nancy Pelosi has been a heartfelt disappointment to all of us who hoped for an early out from Iraq.

Oh come January 20, 2009!

some kind of club that anybody can easily enter as long as they are Muslims. So my question is this, Do you believe the constitution have the rights to define us what ethnic we belong to ? how about the orang asli jakuns aren't they related to us too and also our founding ancestors ? No racist comments plz I am actually a proud muslim, but I don't like the constitution cause if you look how they define the malay ethnicity in Malaysia is like how the Jews define the Jewish ethnicity based on religion, culture and language. Sorry no offence my malay brothers. It's ironic malays criticise Jews very much while the Malaysian constitution define the malay ethnic the same ..

Unfortanetly for all you disgrunteled neasayers, Pelosi is absouletly right. Unless the Democrats get 60 votes in the Senate this repugnent nonsense will continue. The Republicans stall almost all legislation they can and then blame it on the "Democratic Congress" when in fact they are doing most of it just to try to caste blaim on the Democrats so they can get control of the Senate back. Please realize what is REALLY happening. Now the big thing will be the Republicans BLOCKING a Democratic attempt to regulate the commoditiy trading of oil. Watch them block this. While Rome is burning the Republicans plainly don't give a dam about the middle and lower classes. Their big money friends are not hurt by the high gas prices. They are only concerned about gaining control of the White House so their crud and corruption can continue. As to impeachmeht--Bush is bad enough but "Shooter" would only be worse.

Nonsence, we've got the best Senate money can buy. Of goverment of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations.

Why you let religious lunatics hijack the blog? Pages and pages of irrelevant nonsense, wasting space, are allowed that have nothing to do with the subject of Republicans doing what they love: obstruct, filibuster and then blame Democrats with the chanting of "the do nothing Congress" when they are the ones to be blamed for OBSTRUCTIONISM and inaction in times of trouble.
