More House Races Shifting Toward Democrats

Hunting for evidence that a Democratic wave may be building in congressional races? Look no further than the latest edition of the Cook Political Report (sub req'd), the nonpartisan newsletter that tracks House and Senate contests.

In its issue released last week, CPR shifted its competitiveness ratings for 28 House races -- and 27 of them shifted in favor of Democrats.

Twenty-one of those contests were moved from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican," meaning that more and more seemingly "safe" GOP seats aren't quite safe anymore under the current political circumstances.

"While it's not likely that a majority of the races moved from 'Solid' to 'Likely' Republican will become competitive by November, the poor national climate for the GOP and the [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's] unprecedented financial edge makes even very difficult districts for Democrats worth keeping tabs on," the report counsels.

Many of the contests shifting in favor of Democrats are in states that will be competitive in the presidential race as well. The revised ratings include four races in Florida, four in Pennsylvania, two in Virginia and one apiece in Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada and Ohio. (Pennsylvania had the only race that shifted away from Democrats: Rep. Paul Kanjorski's (D) reelection bid in the 11th district).

(Non-subscribers can see Cook's state-by-state race ratings here.)

Before these latest ratings shifts, the Cook Report was predicting a Democratic gain of "10 to 20 seats." With more and more districts now coming into play, Republicans may count themselves lucky if that prediction proves to be accurate.

Good day for good news!

Goodness! Claudine seems to be foaming at the mouth about the possibility of an increase in Democrat house seats! Face reality, Claudine! The GOP led congress for six years and a totally incompetent White House has soured America on GOP leadership. Childish name calling like this only demonstrates the inability of Republicans to rationalize the inept governing we've had for so long.

Anyone who rejects Republican politicai tactics and policies or even dares to disagree with a conservative is incessantly labeled a Marxist, a Socialist, a Communist or worse. Of course, most of the boobus Americanus who throw these labels around have never cracked open a history book or an economic text, or traveled outside North America, or carried on a conversation with a person different from themselves.

Fortunately, the ignoranti will soon pass from center stage and the world will breathe a sigh of relief and wish them good riddance.

This will not vote for anyone that supports that stupid band aide approach to a serious problem. Dependence on fossil fuel is what got us into this mess. More pollutants is not the answer, renewable energy is..and the longer it takes us to take action, the worse the problem will get. As a nation, we need to get away from "quick fixes" with reference to energy...the only way to do that ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES...we can't drill our way out of this problem..it's really as simple as that.

Regrettably the New York State Democratic Party's behavior during the primary was so churlish that none of the incumbents will have an easy road to reelection. If they care about their party they will step aside before the primary.
If not the delegation will go Republican even though or maybe because Obama will carry the state easily.

by my own calculations (can't afford Cook report) I have a 26 seat pick-up for the Dems. I use the percentages of people who only turn out for Presidential elections and vote straight party ticket. The repugs use this as well, so when you see they get a same-sex marriage proposition on the ballot, well that is good for 6%, straight party ticket, no pun intended. Interesting that there is a gay agenda proposition in California, but CA is special, and despite the uptick for repugs still will vote Dem this Fall.

Here's hoping that the American Voter begins to realize that they can make a difference in politics as usual on the Hill.

The GOP IS RESPONSIBLE for not IMPEACHING GOD BUSH not because he was a REPUKLICAN but because he was a despot.

They have supported him at every turn and now the JUNIOR members are paying the price for the BLIND support they gave him and their party. TOO BAD that the AMERICAN voter will not REMOVE the OLD GUARD as they come up for re-election.

NOT SURE that it will be any better with KING OBAMA and his COURT in power. BUT at least we know that if the GOP is not in Control of the HOUSE or the SENATE things MAY be better.

AT ISSUE is the good ole boys network that is still in place. MAYBE if they fear for their re-election chances... they will begin to do what is right for the AMERICAN PEOPLE instead of blind party loyalty.

IMPEACH BUSH NOW.

BEWARE OF THE BLACK WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING.

Will someone bring in a straightjacket for Claudine?

Posted by: Rosco | July 4, 2008 5:18 PM | Report abuse

Poor Claudine. It's understandable though, she's just now reaching the second stage of grief- anger. With the House expected to go another 20 seats to the dems, Nancy Pelosi is seen as very successful among democrats. Thats gotta hurt. And the Senate looks no better- another 4 to 8 seat loss expected there. And obviously, with Barack HUSSEIN Obama leading the electoral vote 304 to 234 against the war hero John McCain, the Republicans must feel like Jesus himself would lose if he had an R after his name. That might not be far off. But poor Claudine really has a ways to go, she has real Nazi fixation issues to work through. We should all pray for her.

what do expect with a huge economic depression just around the corner. It may be 3-4 years before we find bottm in the housing industry. It is only getting worse in the heart of the rebate program. When it is over the auto companies will bleed red ink even worse than they are doing now. Nobody has any money. It's bad, real bad. Only a fool would vote Republican, or a warmonger, or a foolish warmonger.

Wow. It's amazing to see the desparation of right-wing voters. After three decades of ascendancy, the mere specter that conservative Democrats will run the country for the next couple years, has these wack jobs throwing around "marxist" "communist" "socialist". Um, what? communism is a vestige of the 20th century. Step into the real world of teh 21st century. Socialism vs Capitalims is not the contest. It's Big Govt Corporate centered capitlism vs People oriented capitalism that promotes wise resource use and community stability.

What's with the rightwingers' foaming-at-the-mouth postings? They love socialism when Wall Street and the military-industrial-complex are getting the handouts.
They just can't stand government that actually works to help people. So they redistribute middle and lower class incomes to the well off and call it supply side economics. Woe to their children and grandchildren who will pay for their folly.

Frankly I very much doubt that the Democrats will pick up any new seats in Congress since they insisted on running yet
another John Kerry loony toons liberal loser in Barack Hussein Obama and made that
blinking owl ding dong San Francisco Idiot
Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House and
plus the fact the Democrat Controlled
Congress is the Biggest Do Nothing Congress
in US history. NOBAMA! NO PELOSI!

It appears that the GOP has a decent future. All the people posting that rant for the GOP and against the Dems seem to be in the third grade.

Good news for 2016 when they'll be able to vote.

Posted by: steve boyington | July 5, 2008 5:22 PM | Report abuse

Once Democrats take complete control of Congress who are Pelosi and Reid going to hide behind?

They won't have the excuse George Bush will veto it anymore

Also they won't be able to whine and cry and play the blame game, the ball will be ENTIRELY in their court.

Posted by: John C. Page III | July 5, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

I think the ranting and foaming is due to the fact that even GOP strong holds like the 1st and 2nd district in Ohio are leaning Blue and may very likely end up that way.

In my opinion, the reason for this is the job performance of the George and Dick team and their lack of popularity. They have single handidly destroyed the GOP brand and are taking down their loyal house and senate supporters as the go off in to the sunset. From my opinion I don;t theink they care what happens after they leave.

Sorry GOP friends but the worm has turned. Foaming and screaming will not stop this.

"Marxist Socialist Democrat"

Ha-ha! I just love it every time a Republican uses words they can't define. What a hoot.

Hey, what do you call a party that passes the biggest increase in Medicare spending since the program was created . . . but decides that your grandchildren should pay for it?

Socialist? No. Marxist? No. Democrat? No.

Republican? You got it!

Dirty secret: Republicans are Socialist! They're sort of like the congressman who calls everyone else gay and then gets busted in an airport men's room soliciting sex. There's a word for that, let's see . . . oh yeah: hypocrite.

I noticed the same thing. It is as if they don't realize that each person has a different style of writing. Also, look at all the posts that have sentences which are truncated. All of them filled with the same capricious right-wing polemics and no original or thoughtful content.

Republicans have shown their true values. They'll do anything at any cost to help business increase profits. Ronald Reagan's question is more relvant now than ever: Are you better off today than you were 4 (or 8) years ago? The answer is that the American people are much worse off after Bush turned control of the U.S. Government over to business lobbyists. The lesson: Republican politicians depend on deceit to conceal their corporate agenda, but they can't fool all the people all of the time.

And I'm supposed to believe that the democrats will do much better? The ridiculousness of a lot these arguments are mindboggling. It's as if the 40 years of democratic domination of congress never happened, and as if they never kowtowed to special interests. They're all the same, but at least the republicans don't lie about it.

I'm actually much better off now than I was 8 years ago, so are my parents and my family. My dad works for the government and my mom works part time, and I'm a student. Oh right, stories like that are supposed to be hushed up.

My my...I see that the same babblers, bloviators and idiotic belchers still need burping!

Wake up children...so you got a bad batch of pabulum-reality. The election's been over for months! The Republican Party will suffer its biggest losses in both houses of Congress since Barry Goldwater (an honest man) in 1964. McCain can't even remember which constituency he has pimped himself out to each time he appears in front of the same "managed" crowds so beloved of George Bush! Wait until he and Obama appear on the same stage, together, in front of the entire electorate. Without "Tail Ender" Joe whispering in his ear, McCain may forget his own name!

Solid majorities in both Houses become runaway laughers as Obama's coattails grow longer and longer every time McCain opens his mouth and horrified Republicans realize that their candidate is a tired, senile, rather pathetic, pale imitation of even someone as unpopular as our present would-be dictator...and that's quite a feat.

The Party pros have already written off 2008 as hopelessly lost, but even they haven't a clue how to recover from eight years of Bush and 30 years of kidnapping at the hands of the crypto-fascist religionists.

The ONLY constituencies McCain still "commands" are the lunatic fringe of the Claudine ilk, the droolers, the racists and the haters...even the pseudo-religious, rapture seeking right wing, while they certainly won't vote Democratic, will just stay home...Praying instead of preying

As for Wall Street and the big money interests, they too have seen the writing over the urinal walls right next to the admonition from management to "...please don't eat the big pink wafers". As a result, K-Street is loading up with Democrat-leaning lobbyists and panderers in anticipation of the coming GOP debacle...and the necessity to try to insulate themselves against the inevitable criminal indictments against the Ken Lay-type greed mongers, war profiteers and public pick pockets.

Their desperation is understandable but it won't work as filibuster-proof majorities send as many corporate criminals on enforced "vacations" on the federal dime as the "Duke" Cunningham-type political thieves and "opportunists".

The public demands change and they demand accountability...and BLOOD! Will they get change? Maybe. But they will definitely get accountability and blood! And it will be those sleek, self-satisfied fatcats who bleed!

Sorry to see them go? Hell NO! As Mme. Antoinette might have so famously said as they led her off to have her length shortened by about a head..."Let 'em eat the big pink wafers!"

And as Bush might have said if he hadn't slept through history class at Andover after another night of hard partying...

"Apres moi, le deluge!"
