Joe Wilson Raps Pelosi Over Making Bills Available Online

By Philip Rucker
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) marshaled his newfound celebrity Friday by sending a fundraising letter to Republicans that accuses House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of failing to post all bills online at least 72 hours prior to votes.

Wilson, who rose to notoriety for interrupting President Obama's health-care address to Congress by yelling "You Lie!," charged Friday that Democratic congressional leaders "continue to spin and mislead the public" in the contentious debate over health-care reform.

"While this seems like common sense, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have continually rushed major legislation to a vote to ensure little to no public scrutiny," Wilson wrote in his appeal to the National Republican Congressional Committee's supporters. "This means, you as a taxpaying citizen, cannot read the legislation before your representatives vote on it."

But Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly took issue with Wilson's claim. Asked Thursday by the Weekly Standard whether she supports putting the final House bill on health-care reform online for 72 hours before members vote on it, Pelosi replied: "Absolutely. Without question."

"Republicans have had ample chance to read the different versions of the House health insurance reform bill, which have all been online for months," Daly said. "And if they read the newspapers and blogs, including the conservative Weekly Standard, they would know that Speaker Pelosi said yesterday she 'absolutely' will put the health care bill online for 72 hours before the House votes on it. But as usual, they don't let facts get in the way of their misleading rhetoric."

The full text of Wilson's fundraising appeal is after the jump:

Dear Fellow Republican,

There has been a lot of debate on what is true in the debate over government-run healthcare. But Democrats continue to spin and mislead the public in an attempt to stifle honest and open debate about what this bill will do, what it will cost and how it will change your healthcare.

To remedy this, my Republican colleagues have introduced legislation requiring Nancy Pelosi to post all major legislation online for a minimum of 72 hours before it can be brought to a vote. While this seems like common sense, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have continually rushed major legislation to a vote to ensure little to no public scrutiny. This means, you as a taxpaying citizen, cannot read the legislation before your representatives vote on it.

Posting major legislation online for all to read seems like a no-brainer, but with Nancy Pelosi in charge the odds of this bill reaching the House floor for debate and consideration are slim to none. But, my Republican colleagues are fighting back and we need your support. Will you follow this link immediately to support the NRCC as we work to retire Nancy Pelosi and return the people's House to you?

Imagine what would happen if Nancy Pelosi is required to post the Democrats' healthcare bill online for public scrutiny. If we succeed, Americans can finally separate fact from fiction. The level of discourse would most certainly rise due to such transparency - a concept promised by Democrats on the 2008 campaign trail.

It's up to us to hold the Democrats accountable and that's why I'm turning to you for your immediate help. We have an important fundraising deadline approaching at the end of the month where the money raised by the Republicans will be compared to the money raised by the Democrats to determine our strength going into next fall's elections.

If we can raise more money than the Democrats, we'll send a message to Pelosi, Obama, and their friends that the American people are firmly behind the Republicans in opposition to government-run healthcare. Please follow this link to make an immediate contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more to our efforts.

Democrats don't want you reading their healthcare bill - or any other bill for that matter. Their legislative agendas will do nothing more than grow the government, raise you taxes and squash individual freedom. That is why they have cloaked their legislation in mystery and rushed it to vote. Democrats cannot win the battle of ideas and they know this.

Please support the NRCC before our deadline next Wednesday, and together we can bring real transparency to the House.

Thank You,

Joe Wilson

It's a fact that many democrats, up to and including the President, have promised to post bills on the Internet, yet it doesn't seem to happen. So while I'm not a Joe Wilson fan, I can see why he's not taking Nancy Pelosi's word as God's truth.

As if your typical citizen could understand the legislation...

It will grow the govt? OK, so what? Might mean more jobs.

Raise you (sic) taxes? We pay less than a lot of countries so big deal.

Squash individual freedoms? Ah, Ha ha, hearing this from a Republican is laughable...

Wouldn't it be nice if REAL AMERICANS whose votes count got a chance to voice THEIR opinions...I mean look, wilson, boehner, mcconnel and especially the nutso of beck, palin and bachman all get a chance to spin their real lies....WE DON'T GET A CHANCE TO CONFRONT THEM.

Why read anything? with all the Democrats sing to the same tune why put up a bill 72 hours prior to voting? just ramm it down our throats and you will like it because it is good medicine for you.
Hail to Pelosi, Reid, and Obama they will take us to the promissed land.

How is 72 hours enough time? I have a full time job. The least they could do is post it for a week or so. Politicians are so dumb and condescending. Nancy Pelosi is the worst of them all.

Posted by: columbiaheights | September 25, 2009 4:11 PM | Report abuse

The original bill is available on the library of congress website. Summaries of the current bill, written from a highly critical conservative standpoint, are also there. Everyone wants to get angry and throw around accusations, but nobody actually wants to take the time to find the bill and read it before giving their opinion.

When did shouting something make it true?

Hey Wilson, you illiterate POS, shut your pie-hole and go wait in the car...
Working to "retire Nancy Pelosi and return the people's House to you"-in your dreams! Why don't you work to get something DONE on health care instead of standing in the background with the rest of the morons of your ilk doing NOTHING constructive, nothing real, and nothing serious, nothing but NO.
I need the Congress to pass a bill that guarantees me that my pathetic health insurance policy won't be canceled because of my adult-onset diabetes that I work really hard to control...
I need Congress to pass a bill that healthcare insurance is NOT dependent on my job-that if I were to get fired, heaven forbid, that I would lose the pathetic policy I have now...and that it would be policy that doesn't destroy my bank account like it is moving towards now...
There are tons of reasons why me and the rest of the more enlightened folks of this country need Congress to pass a healthcare bill, but POS idiots like JoeDog are doing such a good job of standing in the way!
So once again, shut up you weasel and let the adults work this out...

Those bills are literally unreadable. There are stanzas in them that run on and on and would defy any English teachers best attempt to diagram their true meaning.
Those bills are guaranteed lawsuits waiting to happen, when well meaning persons run into governmental intentioanl ambiguity.
We need healthcare reform. We need those attempts at a healthcare bill scrapped and started over.

All this stuff is chump change. Real health care reform involves extending to all American's the same health care benefits received by members of Congress. It needs to be done on a single-payer basis and funded by a general business tax.

Anything short of this is, well, just baloney.

It would seem that for some reason many on this comment board are under the illusion that the government OWNS them rather than the government is EMPLOYED by them.. YES the bill should be posted on line and YES, good old Pelosi has stated she did not want to do so.. fact is OBAMA himself said ALL bills would be posted 72 hours before their voting.. and while they can manage to SPAM everyone's email they can't figure out how to post a bill.. why don't they just have Obama do it.. he has a list already so it should be a snap..

Mr Wilson: Don't let Pelosi off the hook. She is as crooked as any politician in Washington and don't feel bad about calling the president a liar; he is one and is getting away with it. Anytime someone disagrees with him he plays the race card and that will continue.

Keep the heat on Pelosi.

The polls show that support for a public option is high, well over 60 percent not just with the public, but with the medical profession as well. The customer and the providers both want what the president asserts will work. A public option. Republicans with the emotional and flawed logic attempted to simply disregard the president's using the United States Postal Service as an example. The one thing that they cannot eliminate is the fact that both the Post Office AND private delivery companies exist and have continued to exist together for decades now. The private services have been able to find large niche markets that they tailor their services to, and nothing the government does with regard to the Post Office seems to have threatened the markets of UPS and Fed Ex as far as anyone can tell. In fact over the past few decades, the number of private sector delivery companies has increased rather than decrease.

For years, Republicans have lambasted countries that have socialized medicine, even though they do not actually exist in any of the developed world. Virtually ALL Universal Heath Care systems rely almost completely on the private sector to provide health care as well as health coverage. Private health insurers have not VANISHED in France, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands or even Great Britain.

The reason for the changes in the polls that have pretty much been in the Presidents favor since his inauguration with regard to health care is simply. The Republicans are offering NO alternative except their usual one. Let the free market decide. That was their reasoning when it came to the housing market and securitized mortgage investment over the last eight years. There is no reason that the market bubble in housing cannot occur in the health sector. In fact according to Adam Smith's dictum that "Profits are highest in the nations that are going fastest to ruin" seem to apply to the health insurance industry. In the middle of a recession, where overall prices have dropped 1 percent, in the last half year, health insurers have increased their premiums by five percent. They have had very good first and second quarter profits. Good enough for the insurance CEO's to award themselves huge raises and even larger bonuses. Sound familiar?

This writer would certainly look askance at anyone who would try to further their own political careers by spreading lies and innuendos. If they are doing it deliberately, I would question their ethics. If they honestly believe those lies themselves, I would question their intelligence. In either case I wouldn’t want that person in office to represent me.

I agree they don't have a clue. I fully support posting the final bills at least 72-hours prior to any vote. Nancy Pelosi has been around the block long enough to know that would be a wonderful option for their constituents. However, do I expect to live long enough to ever see it happen?? Absolutly not. This administration is the most secretive, sandpapering the rules administration I have ever seen and it's all done with big smiles on their faces just like they are taking care of everyday business for us. Baloney -- As I've said a number of times and I'll say it again: One of these days the ordinary citizen is going to wake up and say, "Wait a minute what about the US Constitution and my rights?" The response will be Oh, sorry, those were eroded with this law and that law and so forth and so on. Its wake up time in the US and fortunately because of constant talking about some like Joe Wilson and others people are starting to become engaged in the political process -- let's just hope it isn't too late.

Technically, Obama did lie because the Democrats are still pushing to get health care for illegal aliens, and Obama has talked of legalizing them so that they will get coverage. All of which matters little, because they will still be able to utilize Emergency Services for health care…that’s a redundant argument, but what is not redundant is the fact that the Democrats are pushing the bill even though the majority of people do not want what they are proposing. The public option is dead, and so should this bill be…there are many ways to reform health care that only require congressional action and no monetary sums. Most of the problems should be faced with revisions, and caps. This is just more government interference in the private lives of citizens.

We are well aware that Mr. Obama DID lie when he stated, at the time of that "famous" speech; that "illegals" would not be covered under the "new???" health care legislation. At that time and even at present, no one actually knows what is in this pending legislation. How do we know, Ms. Pelosi and Sen. Bacchus, whether you and your colleagues are lying to us still! You can say anything, but without the ability to assess what is actually promoted in this legislation, the public is completely in the dark! Not only should this pending legislation be on the net for at least 2 weeks for the public to peruse; but it should also include the CBO's estimated cost to the American Taxpayer! What's the hurry Ms. Pelosi? Are you afraid of the American people and their ability to see through this ruse!
